How to add your business to gps

How to add your business to gps

  • When you add a business to Google, you can immediately help your business bring in new customers and new streams of revenue.
  • Once you’ve signed up for a Google “My Business” account, it should be easy to add a Google listing for your business.
  • However, verification can take a couple weeks, since it often requires Google to send you a postcard via snail mail.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

If you have a business with a physical address, adding that business to Google (and thereby making it searchable via Google Maps) is a great way to allow customers to find your workplace, to be able to make a connection with them, and to grow a successful business.

It also gives your business an air of legitimacy — what business isn’t searchable on Google Maps these days, right?

So if you have a new business, whether it’s your first or your fifteenth, it’s important to make sure it’s accessible through Google.

Here’s everything you need to know to get your business added to Google, and how to claim ownership so you can control the business page:

How to add a business to Google

If you already have a Google My Business account, here are the steps you’ll have to take to add your new business:

1. Go to Google’s My Business site and make sure you’re logged in (or follow the prompts to sign up for an account).

2. Enter your business’ name and address into the search bar and select “Add your business” (assuming it isn’t already listed, in which case you’ll need to claim it as yours).

3. Choose whether your want your business’ location to appear on Google Maps. If you’re adding a restaurant, being on Google Maps is incredibly useful! But if you’re just adding a small business run out of your house, keeping that location private might be a good idea.

4. Add the requested information, like business category. If you aren’t sure what category your business falls under, try typing a related keyword into the box and see what comes up. And remember that you’ll be able to add additional categories later on.

5. Verify your business. Here are all the ways that you can verify your identity to Google:

  • By mail. Google will send a physical postcard that includes a verification pin, which you’ll then use to verify online.
  • By phone. Google will call you, and provide a verification code over the phone. This is only available for certain businesses.
  • By email. Google will send you the code over email. Again, this is only available for certain businesses.
  • Bulk verification. If your business has over 10 locations, you’ll have to submit an extra form to have them all verified at once. To do this, when you click “Get verified,” click “Chain” afterwards and enter all your info. Google will then take up to a week to process the request.
  • If you have a Google Search Console account, and your business’ website is verified through Search Console, you can verify your account instantly. Some business categories aren’t allowed to do this.

6. Set up your Google My Business page to complete the process.

If you don’t already have a My Business account, you can add your business and create an account at the same time.

The steps are essentially the same as listed above, except you’ll need to click “Create Account” on the My Business homepage, and each question (like business name, or address) is separated out into individual pages.

But again, filling those out should be quick and easy, while verification may require a bit of patience.

Valerie asks:
I own an RV Park in Dillon, Montana. I have been told by several customers that we are not listed on Garmin GPS. How do I be sure that we are listed on GPS systems. I have checked into Google maps etc. This park has been here for at least 10 years. I have owned it since June 2008. Please help as this is a very important issue to my business.

How to add your business to gps

These days, more and more car owners are relying on their dashboard GPS receivers to guide them to your business. If you aren’t listed in the GPS POI (Point of Interest) database under the appropriate category (Shopping, Restaurants, RV Parks) or if your address is wrong in the GPS listing, you’re going to miss out on business.

Getting a GPS manufacturer to update your business listing can be a real pain – here are some tips to help get you listed correctly.

Start with the Data Providers

NAVTEQ provides POI data to GPS vendors, and you can update your business listing with their Map Reporter.

TeleAtlas lets you send them Map Feedback, including the ability to update or add a business listing.

Update any Specialty Data Providers

Woodall’s RV park database has been used by some GPS and map vendors – make sure your RV park or campground is listed here.

There may be other definitive resources for your particular niche – Fodor’s for restaurants, for example. Make sure you’re listed, so that any GPS manufacturer that licenses their database will get your listing.

Add your business to downloadable POI files

Start searching for sites that list POI files for your business category: “RV Park POIs”, “Antique Shop POIs Garmin”, etc. There are plenty of POI trading sites out there that would be happy to have your listing added to their POI database.

Read the article, and use the links provided. I cannot help you get your business listed.

Here’s another “Add a Business” link you may find useful, so your customers can find you on Google Maps and in Google Earth:

I asked Garmin’s Cartography department about the best way to update their POI business listings for Garmin GPS receivers. Garmin City Navigator uses NavTeq data, so when you report a missing or outdated business listing to Garmin, they typically check your report and then submit it to NavTeq using the form mentioned above.

Garmin customers can submit errors or omissions in Garmin’s MapSource cartography or POI business listings at http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/errorForm.jsp

I had a different experience with Garmin. I asked them why my business was not listed since we have been here for 56 years and yet a local business that has been in existence for only 2 years is listed. They told me they get their information from Dunn and Bradstreet. That was about 1 year ago… and my business still isn’t listed. I will try all of the suggestions in this article as well as yours, I hope they work.

How to add your business to gps

Millions of users access Google Maps on a daily basis looking for different things. It therefore goes without saying that a business stands to gain a lot by being visible on the search engine.

Once you list your business on Google, customers can find you easily and know when you open including days and timings. By using GPS, people accessing taxi apps such as Uber and Bolt can also come to you directly without having to call for directions. As long as you are on Google maps, you are bound to be found as you will be listed under the category of business you do.

So, how exactly do you add your business on Google Maps?

  • The first thing you will need to do is to create a business profile. To do so, search for “Google My Business” or go to https://www.google.com/business/ It is absolutely free of charge
  • Enter your business details: Description, phone number, location (address), website and any other information that you think is useful for your potential customers.
  • Upload photos: For maximum exposure, ensure that you upload images of your premises (entrance, ambiance, etc) and your products. You can use your phone to get great images. Just make sure that the photos you upload are an authentic representation of your business.
  • Rename your photos to a more relatable name. By default, photos are saved using something like “11604979img.jpg.” If you use actual descriptions such as “Makeba Braids”, the photo will easily appear on Google search.
  • Embed your Google Maps profile: Use your Website’s traffic to draw more traffic to your Google business traffic. The more traffic your profile gets, the easier it will be to find it. To do this, search for your business on Google Maps, click on “share” and select “embed map.” Copy the code and paste it on your site just the same way you would embed a YouTube video.
  • Ask your customers to leave reviews on the page. If you have many positive reviews, your business will definitely stand out. Google also asks for reviews from customers through a tool on Maps that identifies any location that the y have visited. If it identifies that a customer visited your business, the search engine will ask for a review. Note that your business could also get negative reviews. So, always make sure you impress your customers.
  • Make sure that you place accurate information on your Google business profile. Nothing is more annoying than a customer getting a prompt to call, but find a dead line, or worse, they start a trip to your premises only to find that you moved. If your business contains a lot of inaccurate information, it will not show up in the search.

If you cannot find your business on Maps, chances are: You have not verified your business. All listings need to be verified by a business owner. If you see a prompt under your business on Google saying “Own this business?”, then you need to verify your business by following the instructions

Want to know how to get your business listed on Apple Maps? Too bad. You can’t. Not directly, anyhow.

UPDATE 10/22/14: Apple launched Apple Maps Connect to allow businesses to add and update their listings on Apple Maps! Check out my Apple Maps Connect FAQ.

But there are some rudimentary tools available for you to optimize your business presence on the maps as much as possible and add a location if it’s missing. Here’s how:

Search for Your Business
Get your hands on an iPhone or iPad that has been updated to iOS6. Open the Maps app and enter your business name and location in the search box. Make sure you use the location. In its current state, Apple Maps can get easily confused if the query is not precise. In fact, because the app suffers from quirky data consistency issues, I recommend you do the following searches, just to make sure your business shows up for all of them:

– business name + city
– business name + city + state
– business name + street address
– business name + street address + city
– business name + street address + city + state
– business phone number

If your business listing does not appear for any of these queries, it’s possible that you may have one of the following issues:

– Apple Maps does not have your business in its database
– Apple Maps is confusing your location with a different location (e.g. Miami, FL v. Miami, OH)
– Apple Maps does not have your location in its database

Here are some ways you can try to correct the situation:

Adding Your Business Listing To Apple Maps Database

There are three main ways to currently add a US-based business to Apple Maps:
How to add your business to gps

    1. Report Your Location to Apple Maps
      i. Search for your location
ii. In the location detail click the “Report a Problem” link
      iii. Choose the appropriate problem
iv. Choose “Other” on the Report a Problem screen
      v. Add your business data via the various fields and submitIt’s unclear how often Apple is updating the maps based on user-submitted data, but my guess is they are furiously figuring out how to do it asap.

    2. Add Your Business to Yelp
Yelp syndicates reviews and other content to Apple Maps. If your business has been verified on Yelp, there’s a good chance that it will show up on the maps. If you do not already have a business listing on Yelp, check out How To Add Your Business Listing To Yelp.Again, it’s unclear how often Apple updates the Yelp data, but my guess is this is some of the more frequently updated data on the maps.
    3. Submit Your Business to Localeze
Localeze is the core U.S. business listing data provider for Apple Maps. If your business is not listed on Apple Maps, go to this URL to check if your business is in Localeze’s database. If not, you can submit your information to Localeze for free. That said, the free submissions can take a while to make it into the database. Depending on how complex it is to verify your submission, the premium submission ($297/year) can take 1-2 weeks. Localeze provides updates to Apple on a regular basis, although we don’t know how often Apple is updating the Localeze data. Note: Localeze Premium listings retail for $397. I can get it for you a lot cheaper, so get in touch if you need a submission.
    4. Submit Your Business to Factual
Factual.com is another key global business listing data provider. You can submit your listing here.
    5. Submit Your Business to Acxiom
Acxiom is yet another global data provider to Apple Maps. You can submit U.S. listings via My Business Listing Manager.
    6. Add Your Business to OpenStreetMap
OpenStreetMap is kind of like the Wikipedia of maps. Anyone can contribute to it. It’s a bit complicated but once you figure it out, it’s pretty easy. Apparently Apple was using an old version of OSM, but it may have been updated by now.

In the future, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple creates a formal business claiming process, but I wouldn’t expect that for at least another year. I doubt Apple is going to create its own data verification process. Working through a system to allow business claiming while running verification through its various data partners is likely less of a priority than making sure the mapping functionality works.

Did you know that Google My Business is the most popular local listing directory on the Internet right now? Millions of businesses are taking advantage of their Google My Business (GMB) page in order to tell online users more about their company – and it’s time you did too.

Why is your Google My Business page so important?

If you are a local business, then having a GMB page will help ensure that your company appears in search results whenever users search for your business name. This local listing provides a variety of essential information to your customers, such as:

  • Business name
  • Address
  • Store hours
  • Phone number
  • Website
  • Directions
  • Reviews
  • Questions & answers
  • Popular times
  • Average price
  • Social media profiles
  • Photos

Perhaps you’ve seen other business’s pages appear in local searches. Below is a great example of a GMB page for a local coffee shop in Boston.

You may be wondering why you would need a GMB page if you already have a company website. The answer is simple: users these days are looking for information quickly and with as little effort as possible. Typing in your domain name or even clicking on your website might be too much of a task for a user that’s simply looking for store hours. Having this information displayed front and center right on the search results page is much more useful. Users may often have a difficult time navigating your website to find essential business information, so Google has nicely and neatly displayed it all in one area.

Not only this, GMB also helps you bring new customers to your business. With a majority of searches coming from smartphones today, Google makes use of your device’s GPS location to personalize your search results. Since your GMB page lists your store’s location accurately on a map, this allows Google to recommend your store to customers looking for recommendations. With just a few minutes of work described below, your coffee shop could be recommended to a customer asking Google to recommend coffee shops near her. This can bring down your customer acquisition costs quite dramatically.

How to claim your Google My Business page

Not sure if you have a Google My Business page for your business? The easiest way to check is to Google your business name and see if your company’s information is displayed on the right hand side of the search results list.

If you have not yet claimed your GMB page, you will see a “Manage this listing” link next to the “Suggest an edit” link. Click this, and you will be taken to a page where Google asks you to verify your connection to the business. This verification process prevents random Internet users from claiming your business page. You can either tell Google to call or text your business phone number or tell them to send you a code via email (just make sure you have a business email account, otherwise this method won’t work).

Once you’re done, you will now have access to your GMB page. You should be able to immediately start adding your business information and photos as well as begin responding to reviews.

How to edit your Google My Business page

  1. First, sign in to Google My Business by going to business.google.com. You do not necessarily need a Gmail account, but you will need your business email address or any email that you plan on using to manage your new local listing.
  2. Click “Info” from the menu bar and from there you will see multiple sections in which you can edit. Take your time here and make sure you go through each section to ensure that all of your information is up to date.
    • Always make sure to put accurate store hours. If you operate on a 24/7 basis, you have the ability to set that.
    • If you have special holiday hours (Christmas, New Years, July 4th, etc), then you can also add those in a separate section.
    • Keep in mind that you cannot remove information that’s from other sources, such as “Reviews from the web” or editorial summaries.
  3. Click “Apply” once you are done with your changes. These changes may take a few days to appear on your GMB page, so be patient. However, most changes will be effective immediately since you are the owner of the page.

How to add a logo and cover photo to Google My Business

Now that you’ve taken care of updating and adding your essential company information, it’s time to add aspects that make your business truly unique: your logo design and cover photo. Photos help customers identify your business and learn more about your products, services, employees, and the atmosphere of your storefront.

  1. First, make sure your logo and cover photo are either JPG or PNG file formats. Image file sizes must be between 10 KB and 5 MB with a minimum resolution of 720 x 720 pixels.
  2. Sign into your Google My Business account if you haven’t already, and click Photos from the main menu.
  3. Choose the type of photo you want to upload. You can either change your Logo, Cover photo, or Additional photos.
    • Your logo will help customers recognize your brand.
    • A cover photo will showcase your brand’s personality.
    • Additional photos are used to spotlight various features about your business.
  4. Next, upload the photo/s from your computer. If you have a photo in your GMB page that you want to use as your logo or cover photo, simply select one you’ve already uploaded.

New features added to Google My Business

As of June 2019, Google My Business has released a number of updates and changes to their product. These changes help business owners further customize their GMB profiles by allowing coupon codes, discounts for new followers, vanity URLs, and designating businesses as a “Local Favorite” by providing digital badges of honor.

Perhaps the best part of their updates so far is their changes to how local business’ logos are displayed.

Google My Business is also adding new ways to customize profiles to make them more engaging. New options for cover photos were added, and certain companies will have their logo displayed more prominently. If you want to have your logo displayed on the top right-hand side of your profile, you need to have completed adding your core information to your profile. This update will encourage business owners to complete their Google My Business profile, so they have the best-looking profile. – Inc Magazine

Do you have a business? Whether you have a Mattress Store or other goods and services to sell, you can list yourself on Google Maps. What does this do for you?

Basically, everytime someone searches for a Business on GoogleMaps, you are likely to pop up first if you are near by that location. This could be very good for free advertising since a lot of people have been using Google Maps on their phones to navigate through today’s traffic and find places fast.

Personally, I use a Blackberry 8830 that comes with GPS so I can use Google Maps and press 0, which takes me to my current location. A lot of times, I search for banks or restaurants nearby while I am driving. I’ve saved so much time with this nifty phone and GoogleMaps. But you CAN get your business listed. It’s very simple.

Think about how many people use Google Maps everyday on their GPS enabled phones to find businesses or restaurants. If you are not listed, you are probably missing out on at least 1,000 impressions a day for free advertising through GoogleMaps.
