How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

For graphic designers and visual artists, color accuracy on your Windows 10 computer is absolutely critical. Perfecting the look of what you see on the screen is of little use if it looks completely different once it’s printed out as a physical product. Unfortunately, this is an extremely common problem when it comes to representing true-to-life colors on-screen.

Color calibration tools and settings have been featured prominently in built-in monitor controls and operating systems in order to address this problem. Windows has long included a color calibration utility, but oddly, it’s buried in Windows 10. While decreased findability of a feature is usually a sign of impending deprecation, the Windows 10 color calibration utility remains extremely useful for those looking for the most accurate colors possible. In this article, we’ll show you where to find the color calibration utility in Windows 10 and how to use it.

How to Find and Use the Color Calibration Wizard in Windows 10

To get started with Windows 10’s built-in color calibration utility, go to Start > PC Settings > System > Display. Scroll down to the Multiple displays section and click Advanced display settings.

The number of colors your monitor is able to display depends on several factors, which include the graphics adapter, the type of display monitor you are using, and the interface. For modular monitors, it is recommended you use DVI (digital video interface) for guaranteed accuracy. Windows 10’s calibration tools focus on a few areas:

  • Gamma – how the colors red, green and blue are projected on the screen to make up the color of an image.
  • Brightness and contrast – how well elements appear in a picture without looking washed out or too dark.
  • Color Balance – how accurately your monitor displays a particular shade of gray.

Accuracy will ultimately be dependent on your own perception. Click Next to begin adjustment.

Follow the instructions to reset your monitor’s display color settings before making changes. This can normally be found on the side of your monitor. Click Next.

Gamma – Reds, Greens, and Blues

The first modification you will make is to your gamma, which as we mentioned earlier, determines how colors based on red, green and blue are displayed on the screen. The example in the screenshot shows what you should try to aim for. Click Next.

Brightness and Contrast

The next two display controls focus on brightness and contrast. For this section of the color calibration wizard, it is recommended you perform the calibration in an environment with natural light in order to achieve the best results. If you don’t have an option to adjust brightness, which might be the case if you are using a laptop, you can click Skip brightness and contrast adjustment. Otherwise, click Next.

Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.

Click the drop-down list next to Resolution. Check for the resolution marked ( recommended). This is your LCD monitor’s native resolution—usually the highest resolution your monitor can support.

Resolution based on LCD monitor size

Recommended resolution (in pixels)

19-inch standard ratio LCD monitor

20-inch standard ratio LCD monitor

20- and 22-inch widescreen LCD monitors

To get the best color displayed on your LCD monitor, make sure to set it to 32-bit color. This measurement refers to color depth, which is the number of color values that can be assigned to a single pixel in an image. Color depth can range from 1 bit (black-and-white) to 32 bits (over 16.7 million colors).

Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.

Click Advanced settings, and then click the Monitor tab.

Under Colors, select True Color (32 bit), and then click OK.

Windows also contains advanced color management controls. Color management systems ensure that color content is rendered everywhere as accurately as possible—especially for devices such as your monitor and your printer.

Display calibration software helps to make sure that colors are displayed accurately on your screen. If you already have display calibration software from another software provider installed on your computer, you can use that software to calibrate your display. Display calibration devices are often packaged with calibration software. Using a calibration device with the calibration software it came with can help you get the best color on your screen.

Windows also includes a feature for calibrating your display.

For external displays, brightness and contrast are set on the monitor controls, not from within Windows. Most CRT and LCD monitors have buttons or other controls on the front where you can control brightness and contrast. Some open an on-screen menu where you can make these adjustments. If you’re unsure of how to adjust these controls, check the manual for your monitor or the manufacturer’s website.

The brightness of most laptop screens can be adjusted within Windows. If you’re using a laptop, you can adjust brightness in Power Options.

Windows includes a technology called ClearType that is turned on by default. ClearType allows your monitor to display computer fonts as clear and smooth as possible. This can help make text easier to read over long periods of time without causing eyestrain. It works especially well with LCD devices, including flat-panel displays, laptops, and smaller handheld devices.

It’s a good idea to make sure ClearType was not turned off for some reason, especially if the text on your monitor looks fuzzy. You can also set up ClearType to work best with your particular monitor.

Adjusting the color quality setting in Windows may be necessary to resolve issues with the color display on monitors and other output devices like projectors.

The place you need to go to change this setting was moved starting in Windows 7, so be sure to follow the steps below that are appropriate for your specific version of Windows.

These steps are relevant for users of Windows XP or newer.

Windows 10, 8, and 7

The fastest way to do this is with the control command in the Run dialog box. You can open that box with the WIN+R keyboard shortcut.

Navigate to Appearance and Personalization.

Don’t see it? If you’re viewing the icons in Control Panel instead of the categories, you won’t see that option, but you can select Display instead and skip down to Step 4.

Choose Display.

Select Change display settings from the left side of the window.

Use the Advanced settings link to open the display adapter’s settings.

If you have more than one monitor plugged in, be sure to select the monitor first before opening the settings.

In the Adapter tab, open List All Modes.

Pick an option from the list. In most cases, you’ll want to choose the one that’s the same as the display resolution and has the highest number in parenthesis.

As an example, you might see three 1280 by 1024 options: True Color, High Color, and 256 Colors, but only one will have the highest “bit” number, such as the (32-bit) one.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Choose OK to close that box, and then again to close the adapter’s settings.

Windows Vista

Go to Start and then Control Panel.

In a hurry? Type personalization in the search box after clicking Start. Choose Personalization from the list of results and then skip to Step 4.

Select Appearance and Personalization.

If you’re viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won’t see this link. Simply double-click Personalization and proceed to Step 4.

Select Personalization.

Choose the Display Settings link.

Locate the Colors drop-down box on the right-hand side of the window. Under most circumstances, the best choice is the highest “bit” available. Generally, this will be the Highest (32 bit) option.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

If there are multiple monitors in use, select the one you want to change the color quality for before picking an option from the drop-down box.

Some types of software require the colors display setting to be set at a lower rate than suggested above. If you receive errors when opening certain software titles, be sure to make any changes here as necessary.

Select OK to confirm the changes. If prompted, follow any additional on-screen directions.

Windows XP

Open Control Panel by going to Start and choosing Control Panel.

Select Appearance and Themes.

If you don’t see that option then it means you’re viewing Control Panel in Classic View. Open Display instead, and then skip down to Step 4.

From the bottom of that screen, choose Display.

Open the Settings tab in the Display Properties window.

Locate the Color quality drop-down box on the right-hand side of the window. Under most circumstances, the best choice is the highest “bit” available. Generally, this will be the Highest (32 bit) option.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

For multiple monitor setups, be sure to choose the right monitor from the monitor box above the settings. You’ll want to do that before changing the color quality settings.

Some types of software require the color quality settings to be set at a lower rate than suggested above. If you notice errors when opening certain programs, be sure to make any necessary changes here.

Select OK or Apply to confirm the changes. If prompted, follow any additional on-screen directions.

One way to skip through the first couple steps above, regardless of the version of Windows you’re using, is to open the Display or Display Properties window via a command line command. The command control desktop can be run from Command Prompt or the Run dialog box to immediately open those settings.

Whether you’re watching a movie or editing pictures, you might have noticed that the colors on your screen aren’t quite right. Some monitors are naturally too bright, while others have more saturated colors. Calibrating your screen helps set the colors to match a standard, which makes everything look better. Here’s how to calibrate your Windows 10 monitor to ensure correct light and color settings.

How to Calibrate Your Monitor in Windows 10

To calibrate your monitor on a Windows 10 computer, go to Settings > Display > Calibrate display color. Then go follow the steps to set your gamma, brightness, contrast, and colors. You can also use online tools to calibrate your monitor as well.

Note: Before adjusting your monitor, make sure that it has been turned on for at least 30 minutes. This ensures that the monitor has already warmed up and is displaying its normal brightness and colors.

  1. Click the magnifying glass icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen. This will cause a search bar to pop up.
  2. Then type “Calibrate display color” into the Windows search bar.How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor
  3. Next, click Open. A new window will then pop up that says, “Welcome to Display Color Calibration.”

Note: If you have multiple monitors, make sure to drag the window to the display you want to calibrate.

Then click Next to start the calibration process. You will also have to click Next between each of the following steps. How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Note: Make sure to set your monitor to factory settings at this point. Otherwise, you won’t get the best results. To reset your monitor to factory conditions, use the buttons located on the front, side, or back. However, if your monitor lets you set the gamma, you should set it to 2.2 or as close as possible.

Next, use the slider to adjust the gamma. To do this, move the slider until the dots in the middle of the image appear less visible. This will change both the brightness and color of your screen.

Note: Don’t worry if you can’t make the circles in the center completely disappear. If you want a better way of testing, you can also use this gamma correction test image. Try to make as many numbers appear on the top and bottom bars as possible. With better monitors, you will be able to see 6 numbers in each bar, while lower-grade monitors will only be able to show 4 numbers.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Note: If you are not able to adjust the slider, you might have to change the gamma settings by using your monitor’s controls. You should still keep the display settings window and gamma correction image test open while you do this.

Next, adjust the brightness. To do this, use the control buttons on your monitor until you can see the shirt and suit in the image, but not so much that the X stands out from the background. You should still be able to see the “X,” but the wall behind it should not be washed out. How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Note: Your screen will look different depending on what angle you are looking at it. For the best results, you should step back and look at your monitor from far away.

  • Next, adjust the contrast. To do this, use the buttons on your monitor. You want to set your contrast so you can just see the wrinkles and buttons on the shirt of the man in the picture. The background of the image should not be bright white. How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor
  • Then adjust your colors. To do this, use the sliders at the bottom of the window until all the bars are a neutral gray. If you find this difficult, you can also download an image of color bars and use that image to see when your colors are off. How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor
  • Next, click Previous calibration and Current calibration to see if you like the changes you made. Doing this will not change your calibration. You can go back and change any settings by clicking the arrow in the top-left corner of the window. How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor
  • If you’re satisfied with the new calibration, click Finish. If not, click Cancel, and you can start all over. To get the best results, you can do the steps over again. For best results, you might want to go through the steps again, but backward this time. This is because each step affects the next one, so changing the order will help you fine tune your calibration even more.
  • Note: You can check the “Start ClearType Tuner…” box to adjust the clarity of text on your screen. You will then be asked to do a quick test to calibrate the text on your screen.

How to Calibrate Your Monitor Using Online Tools

After you are done calibrating, there are tests you can take online to make sure your monitor is showing you the best color quality.

The Lagom LCD Monitor Test Pages. The single-page version shows you a bunch of tests for monitor calibration on one webpage. Just simply go to the website and do the tests yourself. If you want more extensive instructions, you can head to the full version of the test.

W4zt Screen Color Test. This website shows a few color gradients for comparisons, some grayscale boxes, and a test for your screen gamma too. This is quicker to do than Lagom, and it is great if you want to get the job done fast.

Photo Friday. Photo Friday is a free photo-sharing website, but they also offer a free calibration tool. This test is shorter and simpler than Lagom and W4zt, but you can use it to see if you have the right brightness and contrast for your screen.

Although Windows 10 can automatically detect and configure the appropriate display settings, it’s not just about making elements bigger or changing the screen resolution. You also want to make sure your photos, videos, and games look at their best by manually calibrating your monitor, which is something the operating system can’t accurately do automatically.

Fortunately, Windows 10, similar to previous versions, includes a color calibration utility to make sure your monitor is set to display the most accurate colors and black levels.

In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to calibrate the display on your PC, laptop, or tablet using the built-in Display Color Calibration utility.

How to calibrate a monitor for accurate colors

    1. Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app.
    2. Click Display.

Click the Advanced display settings link.

Quick Tip: Before moving to the next step, the utility recommends restoring the default display color settings whenever possible. If you’re using a custom configuration, it’s a good idea to note those settings in case you want to revert the changes.

Adjust the gamma settings by moving the slider up or down until the small dots are barely visible, and click Next.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Find the brightness controls on your monitor and adjust the brightness higher or lower as described in the image below, and click Next to continue.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Find the contrast controls on your monitor and set it high enough as described in the image below, and click Next to continue.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Adjust the color balance by moving the slider for the red, green, and blue colors until removing any color cast from the gray bars, and click Next.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Click the Previous calibration or Current calibration button to compare the new changes. If the new color configuration is reasonable, click Finish to apply the settings or Cancel to discard the new configuration.

How to adjust colors on an lcd monitor

Note: You’ll also notice that in this last step, you can start the ClearType Tuner to make sure text are displayed correctly.

Remember that changes made through the display menu will be kept even if you click Cancel. However, if you’re not happy with the new settings, you can revert the changes manually, or reset your display to the default settings.

It’s worth pointing out that there are many other paid and free tools available to calibrate your computer’s monitor, but the utility that comes bundled with Windows should be more than enough for most users to ensure images look at their best colors and with accurate black levels.

What color calibration tool do you use? Tell us in the comments below.
