Table of Contents

Facebook ads are the most popular form of online advertising of our time.

Reports by Forrester Research and eMarketer show that 25% of total online spending in 2018 will go toward social media.

And, 90% of social media users are on Facebook –– which is significantly higher than the other platforms.

How to advertise on facebook

But beyond the famed success of Facebook Advertising for online businesses, Facebook is continually expanding its offering.

In total, you have:

  • Facebook Shop: Where your Facebook fans can shop on your fan page and from which your dynamic product ads pull, as well as your Instagram Shopping catalog.
  • Facebook Marketplace: Where you can engage in Etsy-like peer-to-peer selling without the fees. In addition, Facebook’s recent Marketplace update bring in Instagram-like recommendation features to expand your store’s reach.
  • Facebook Dynamic Retargeting Ads: Where you can retarget users who landed on your site with similar products to what they viewed, and in which Facebook uses an algorithm to pull the products from your feed that have the highest engagement (must be using Facebook Shop for this to work).
  • Shopping on Instagram: Where followers can shop tagged items in your Instagram post (must be using Facebook Shop for this to work)
  • Shopping on Stories: Where followers can shop tagged items in your Instagram stories (same thing, must be using Facebook Shop for this to work).

Indeed, the Facebook ecosystem has built an ad network with substantial reach power for brands of all sizes.

There’s only one question that remains:

How do I set my own brand up for success within Facebook’s ad ecosystem?

The answer to that question depends on your budget, goals and experience. You’ll need to be able to answer additional questions, including:

  1. What kind of budget should you allocate to Facebook?
  2. How do you accurately measure your ad performance?
  3. What ad types should you use?
  4. What’s an effective way to create an audience?

And that’s what this guide is for. We are here to help you navigate the Facebook Advertising waters to ROAS (return on ad spend) success.

How to Advertise on Facebook:
  1. Set up your Facebook business account.
  2. Determine the campaign type you want to run, either cold traffic campaigns or re-marketing campaigns.
  3. Determine the customer awareness stage you are targeting, either awareness, consideration or conversion as outlined by Facebook’s ad manager.
  4. Determine your ad format, either single image, video ad, carousel, or collection.
  5. Choose your targeting based on Facebook’s options, including interest and brands, life event, age and gender, specific location, specific language or lookalike audiences.
  6. If running a lookalike campaign, download a list of your best customers from BigCommerce and upload it into Custom Audiences for a highly targeted lookalike campaign.
  7. Build out your Facebook ad creative.
  8. Determine overall budget and your return on ad spend KPI.
  9. Track and measure results using the Facebook pixel and a custom conversion.
  10. Monitor the campaign and optimize to hit your desired ROAS. You may need to update ad creative or targeting criteria.

How to advertise on facebook

I was only 12 years old when Facebook became available for anyone with a valid email address.

By the time I was 14, one of the top trends was to create a fan page that anyone could follow. I remember that feature being used by friends as a way to tell jokes and post funny content.

But things are a bit more sophisticated in the world of social media nowadays.

Now, Facebook is a great place to advertise your business and interact with prospective and current customers.

Below, let’s discuss how you can use Facebook to promote your business.

How to Promote Your Business on Facebook

  1. Sign up for a business page.
  2. Optimize your profile.
  3. Be active in Facebook groups.
  4. Create your own Facebook group.
  5. Promote events.
  6. Interact with your followers.
  7. Use live streaming.
  8. Run Facebook ads.
  9. Talk about your company culture.
  10. Manage contests and giveaways.
  11. Have a customer service representative field comments and requests from customers.
  12. Post valuable content.

1. Sign up for a business page.

The first thing you need to do is create a business page. This is a simple process. All you have to do is log on to Facebook, click “Pages” in the left sidebar, and then “Create New Page.”

To get started, you’ll upload a profile picture, a cover photo, and basic information about your business. This will include what type of business you run whether you run a B2B business, a local business, or an ecommerce site.

Once you sign up, it’s smart to start optimizing your page.

2. Optimize your profile.

Now that your profile is up and running, you’ll want to optimize your page. This means writing your About section, adding business information like your website and business hours, and including a call to action button such as “Book Now,” “Shop Now,” or “Sign Up.”

Additionally, you’ll want to draft several posts that will engage your audience. Think about what type of posts they might like on social media. How are they interacting with your competitors? What posts perform well for your competition? This is the type of content you’ll want to model yours after.

Now that you’ve built and optimized your business page, it’s time to engage with your community.

3. Be active in Facebook groups.

A great way to promote your business on Facebook is to participate in Facebook groups. You can engage with public groups or join private Facebook groups.

To get started with this, you’ll want to consider what type of groups your audience would be a part of. Once you’ve finished brainstorming, you can join the same communities that your audience is active in.

4. Create your own Facebook group.

While it’s important to engage with your audience where they’re at, it’s also important to attract your audience to your own pages. You can do this with your own Facebook group.

Krystal Wu, a social media community manager at HubSpot, says, “Facebook Groups allow our audience to connect with each other and have valuable discussions. Businesses who center a Group around their brand or industry can build a community around it — making our brand and products even more valuable to potential customers.”

5. Promote events.

Another way to promote your business on Facebook is to use the social media platform to promote your events. If you’re a local business, this is especially important.

Attracting people to an event can feel like an undertaking, and you need to use all the tools at your disposal to promote it. That’s why you should post your event on Facebook and also plan an ad campaign.

6. Interact with your followers.

This might seem like social media 101, but it’s important to interact with your followers. The best way to get engagement on social media is to make sure your posts show up for your followers. To do that, you need to create interaction. Make sure you answer questions, respond to comments, and participate in your online community.

7. Use live streaming.

Facebook live is an excellent tool to promote your business and provide valuable content to your audience. You can use this feature to showcase your company culture, host a panel discussion on industry topics, or even display your industry expertise.

Additionally, you can host events virtually on Facebook live as a way to interact with your audience that can’t be at an event in person. This is a great way to promote your business because going live will notify your followers and prompt them to engage with your page.

8. Run Facebook ads.

One of the best ways to promote your business with Facebook is to use Facebook ads. The social media giant has created one of the most popular ways to reach your audience with its advanced targeting options.

To get started with ads, you can review this lesson from Facebook directly. Make sure that you review the types of Facebook ads and various bidding strategies to help you succeed.

9. Talk about your company culture.

When you post on social media, your content should promote your overall brand messaging. A great way to do this is to talk about your company culture. Showcase your employees and their day-to-day tasks.

You can also use Facebook as a recruitment tool, hosting panels on what it’s like to work at your company, or posting jobs right on your business page.

10. Manage contests and giveaways.

Encouraging engagement is one of the main objectives of Facebook promotion. To do this, you can host contests and giveaways that your audience will want to participate in. This will help increase brand awareness and encourage interaction from your followers.

11. Have a customer service representative field comments and requests from customers.

Social media is a great way for your customers to get in touch with you. However, if they choose to reach out to you on Facebook, you need to be prepared to answer their questions and address their requests. To do this, consider having a few people from your customer service team answer messages or comments from your customers.

12. Post valuable content.

Ultimately, the best way to promote your business on Facebook is to provide valuable content for your audience. Content is what attracts people to your social media profile and is the way you’ll build an audience online. You’ll want to include different types of content including images, videos, text, Stories, or even polls.

Facebook is an essential part of your social media marketing. No matter what type of business you’re running, it’s important to develop both organic and paid social media strategies to promote your business on Facebook.

How to advertise on facebook

How to advertise on facebookSince the social media juggernaut has shown no signs of leaving the marketing pantheon, learning how to successfully advertise on Facebook is one of the best things you can do to increase brand awareness and drive conversions. If you are new to advertising on social media and are unsure about where to begin, use the following five tips to make your upcoming campaign a success:

1. Pick High-Quality Images

This may sound trite, however, choosing super-high-quality images is always key, whether advertising on Facebook or anywhere else. Visuals account for about 80 percent of the impact your ads will have on your target audience, so ensure you images are close-up, vibrant, positive, and grab the consumer’s attention. The social media site displays images featuring 100 pixels wide x 72 pixels tall resolution, but you will do better to use images with higher resolution to create a clean, crisp look.

2. Take Advantage of Facebook Insights

Learning about specific sections of your target audience via Facebook Audience Insights is invaluable. This free tool provides helpful data so you know exactly who your audience is based on consumers who already like your Facebook page. It saves a whole lot of time, money, and stress, as you will no longer be creating ads blindly and hoping for the best.

3. Consider Facebook Offers

Facebook Offers is another outstanding tool similar to Google Offers Extensions. It is a great tool for promoting special offers, such as giving away an eBook or product sample collection, in exchange for consumer email addresses. You can also use the tool to encourage consumers to visit your store location for a free gift with purchase or something similar. These deals are for Facebook users only, and it is recommended that you start with your fans before branching out to general users.

4. Get Specific When You Advertise on Facebook

Creating unique advertisements for each segment of your audience is another great way to advertise on Facebook. This is perhaps the coolest feature on the social media site’s ad platform, as you can create multiple advertisements and put them before different groups. You can also use the same ad on two or more different audiences. This allows for much better targeting that also lets you see how your ads perform for different segments of your target demographic.

5. Always Connect to a Landing Page

Ensuring your ads connect to correlating landing pages is imperative- otherwise, even the best ads are all for naught. Having your audience click on a landing page, whether to learn more about a product or service, enjoy a great deal, or anything else, allows you to show your consumers why they need your brand before encouraging them to buy. Landing pages provide consumers with the option to learn more, and subsequently helps them feel in control of their buying decisions instead of being pressured.

How to advertise on facebook

Social media should be part of any business’s digital marketing strategy. It is a key way to share content, build links, and drive engagement. However, you are missing out on the full potential of social media if you are only using it for organic traffic.

Social ads allow you to reach even more of your audience, often at a low cost. You can then turn these users into followers and continue marketing to them.

However, if you want to do social media right, there is one social platform in particular where you need to be using ads: Facebook.

Facebook is by far the most popular place for social media marketing. Facebook is especially popular for local advertisers and is now used by 62% of them—and for good reason.

Let’s take a look at 10 reasons why so many brands are advertising on Facebook and why you should be, too.

1. Facebook Ads Are Affordable

Advertising on Facebook can cost however much you want. You set your budget from the start, and Facebook stops showing your ad when you hit this amount. The higher your budget, the more users you will reach.

2. Facebook Ads Work

An eMarketer survey found that 96% of social media marketers consider Facebook the best social media platform for ROI. This is across the board for both B2C and B2B companies.

3. Your Audience is on Facebook

Not only do the people you want to target have accounts on Facebook, they spend an average of 40 minutes per day on the platform. More than 2 billion users have an account and 1.55 billion access the platform every month.

4. You Can Target Specific Users

Facebook has a wealth of information about its users. You can benefit from this by targeting just the people who are most likely to become your customers.

The platform allows you to specify criteria like age, gender, location, job title, industry, marital status, and interests. You also have the option to filter by connections (for instance, friends of users who already like your page) and behavior, which includes recent purchases and life events.

Another targeting option is to use lookalike audiences. These are made up of users similar to your current audience, meaning there is no need to guess demographics if you lack this information.

5. Facebook Offers Retargeting

Yet another way to reach the right users is through retargeting. This enables you to target users who previously visited your website, used your mobile app, or gave you their email address. As they are already familiar with your business, they are more likely to download premium content, start a free trial, or make a purchase.

6. Ads Are Easy to Set Up

Facebook makes it easy to create an ad, taking you through steps where you select the type of ad, define your audience, and set your budget and timeframe.

However, despite the process being simple, it is highly-customizable. You can choose from a variety of ad formats, delivery, and bidding options.

For instance, Facebook ads use a pay-per-click model, just like the majority of online ads, but pay per impression, pay per like, or pay per action are also options.

7. Facebook Provides Useful Analytics

Advertising on Facebook allows you to reach users when they may not be in a buying frame of mind. Rather than a limitation, this can be an opportunity. Whereas your ads may be ineffective for pushing for a sale, they can be useful for improving brand awareness and capturing leads for nurturing.

Now, this can make measuring the success of your ads more complicated. However, Facebook simplifies the process by providing you with insights related to your goals. Many of these are about social ROI — or how users reacted to your ads.

For example, in addition to data about impressions, reach, and frequency, you receive information about likes, shares, comments, page likes, and click-through rates. All these metrics are in real time, allowing you to make changes to your ads as necessary.

8. You Can Add Custom Button

Most types of digital ads have a CTA button that leads to a landing page on the business’s website. This can be effective when users needs more information before they are willing to make a decision. However, it tends to result in only a percentage of users actually providing you with their contact information.

With Facebook ads, you can send users to your website, but you also have other options. CTA buttons include Apply Now, Book Now, Contact Us, Download, Sign Up, and Learn More.

9. Facebook Offers Video Ads

You have probably noticed that the majority of posts on your Facebook newsfeed are videos. This is because most users prefer watching videos to reading content. Facebook allows you to create video ads to grab more attention.

10. Ads Support Your Organic Strategy

Paying for reach can complement your organic strategy, especially when you pay to boost posts. This is most effective when you think carefully about which posts you will turn into ads.

For instance, ads give you the ideal opportunity to target specific users who will find a particular post hyper-relevant. It is likely that a percentage of these users will share the post, meaning your content will become visible to more users without you needing to pay for reach.

Another way to use ads is to access people who would benefit from following your page. For this, you should promote your top-performing posts. Of course, the goal of an ad strategy should never be to simply gain more likes for your page.

However, if you target relevant demographics, you will receive likes from users who will continue to engage with your posts. Once these users have liked your page, they’ll find all this content organically.

A final option is to promote an event. By increasing the visibility of an event using a Facebook ad, it shows up in users’ newsfeeds. If they choose to attend, your event will appear to their friends organically.

Conclusion

Advertising on Facebook is an essential way to expand your reach on the social platform. In addition, Facebook ads play a role in your overall digital marketing by increasing awareness for your brand, attracting leads, and sometimes even converting users into customers.

Have you tried advertising on Facebook? What were your results? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Using Facebook to engage with your audience can be very effective. However sometimes a post or page may need a little added push to reach new customers. Advertising on Facebook can be a simple cost effective way of doing this.

Follow this step by step guide to get started with advertising on Facebook, and you should have your ad up on Facebook shortly.

Step 1: Marketing objective

Once logged in, you will be asked by Facebook, what it is you are trying to achieve with advertising. Choices are conveniently split between awareness, consideration, and conversion.

Choose whichever is relevant to you. For the sake of this guide we will choose ‘Send people to your website’. Once chosen, pick a name for your campaign and continue.

Step 2: Audience targeting

Next, you will be given the options to narrow down your audience to target your ads more effectively. You can choose a custom name for this targeting if you wish to re-use your audience selection in another campaign. Choose the location, age group, gender, and language of the users you wish to target. If this is your first ad, you may leave all of these options untouched, run your ad, and see what type of users respond best to it.

How to advertise on facebook

Step 3: Placements

Once you have the audience targeted, you can choose where your ad is displayed. Depending on the type of campaign you have chosen, Facebook may recommend that it automatically chooses where to place the ads. If you know where your ad may perform better choose ‘Edit Placements’, and pick the areas you would like your ad to appear.

  • Desktop News Feed
  • Mobile News Feed
  • Right Column on Desktop

Step 4: Budget & Schedule

Now you should be at the Budget & Schedule options. Here you can choose how much you would like to spend on your ad per day, or you can specify a total budget if you choose a start and end date for your ad. Depending on your ad objective, you can choose when you get charged by Facebook. In this guide, the ad we are running is for clicks to a website, therefore Facebook will suggest getting charged by ‘Link Clicks’ is the best option. You can also set a bid amount for each click or allow Facebook to automatically bid for you to guarantee a better price for you. Depending on your objective you may also choose the time of day your ad will display, e.g if your ad is for a lunchtime deal for a restaurant, advertising just before lunch would be better than possibly advertising all day.

How to advertise on facebook

Step 5: Review reach

After you have chosen your audience, placement, budget and schedule, Facebook will give you an estimate of how many people your ad could potentially reach with your chosen options. Review this to make sure you’re happy with your selection.

How to advertise on facebook

Step 6: Ad Format

Multiple options are now available when creating an ad on Facebook. A basic single image ad will be available by default, but if you have more images you can choose to have a carousel, or a slideshow. If you have a video, you may use this as your ad as well. Use the form to choose your ad type, and proceed to upload any images or video you need for the ad. If you are using images, make sure they are high quality.

How to advertise on facebook

Step 7: Connecting a page

Any ad you run on Facebook will be displayed under the name of your Facebook page. Your pages should be available in a dropdown selection box, choose the page to which the ad is related. As Instagram is also a part of Facebook now, your ad will be displayed there a swell, the Instagram account associated with your Facebook page will used to promote your ads there. If you do not have an Instagram account connected to your Facebook page, you can add an account, or optionally you can remove your ad from appearing on Instagram. Also if your campaign objective is website clicks, you will be asked for the url of your website, or a specific pge you wish to point users to. Along with this, enter a headline for your ad for e.g ‘Visit my awesome site for great deals’.

How to advertise on facebook

Step 8: Confirmation

Finally, Facebook will present you with how your ad will look along with all the options you have chosen. If you are happy with all of this click ‘Place order’ and you’re ad will be sent for review.
