How to apply simple everyday makeup

How to apply simple everyday makeup

You do not need to apply a cat eye makeup or a contouring highlight for everyday makeup; at the same time, you need to protect your skin and highlight your facial features when you step out every day. Here are some tips that can help you make the most of everyday beauty products that can bring out the best in your facial features, protecting your skin and enhancing it at the same time. Here are some essential steps for applying simple yet effective makeup every day.

Prepping the Skin

  • To get your face ready for the simple makeup, you need to first prep it by using the best cleansing products.
  • After a normal face wash, start by cleansing the face of any oil or dirt that remains.
  • Use a cotton pad that is soaked in vitamin-rich and rinse-free water like the micellar products available in the market.
  • These help wipe away dirt and grime without causing irritation or redness. Swab the soaked cotton across the face gently, especially the T-zone of your face. Repeat twice to remove dirt and previous makeup.

Hydrate and Moisturize the Skin

  • Applying a moisturizer, a water-based and light one for the day will help keep the skin smooth and hydrated.
  • SPF formulation helps provide sun protection as well. This helps to even out the skin and prepare it for makeup such as foundation and blush.
  • Use it before applying makeup. It can also be used two to three times a day even if you are not going for heavy makeup. Use it whenever you want to keep your face hydrated and free from dryness.

Even Out Skin Tone

When you have to wish to even out skin tone but not go too heavy on foundation, reach for a tinted moisturizer, sheer coverage or a concealer product. These help to even out the skin; dab on the face and even out with fingers for a smooth finish.

Use of Face Powder

Once blemishes and dark circles are covered with any formula product as mentioned above, finish off with a layer of translucent powder. This helps prevent oil from surfacing on your skin. Apply it with the pad provided or a brush in a circular motion. You can use translucent face powder after applying concealer or foundation.

Applying Blush

Use a makeup sponge or your fingers to massage on the apples of the cheeks. Ensure that it is a natural tone that highlights your cheekbones without standing out on the skin. The blush is the colorful thing that you will be adding on the face after you have used a lot of neutral things so far. Using a powder blush will help in bringing out a vibrant color on your cheek bones.

Applying Eye Shadow

Use an eyeshadow brush to apply over the eyelids, up to the brow bone as well as touching the inner corners and outer reaches of the eye.The best suited ones for daily makeup is the shimmery eye shadow in light pink or natural tones.

Applying Eyeliner

Use an eyeliner pencil of your choice to outline the upper eyelids. If you wish to darken, use black eyeliner and outline in broad strokes.

Coloring the Lips

How to Do:

  • Ensure that your lips are supple and soft before you apply lipstick. A lip balm would come in handy.
  • Use the lipstick after that to ensure a well-hydrated look. You can pick a tinted balm also to simply add on the lips and not the lipstick.
  • This would be as per the kind of casual or made up look you wish to flaunt. The lip coloring must be the final part of any makeup.
  • If you are looking to give your face a quick makeup in a matter of a couple of minutes, then using powder and a good lipstick is more than enough.
  • To make the lipstick last, you can cover the entire lips with the liner and not just use it on the lip border.

The above steps are the essentials for everyday makeup. Ensure that you use proper cleansing routine by the end of the day.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

A few years ago I clicked on a YouTube makeup tutorial and watched in disbelief. Did people really spend this much time getting ready everyday? I can totally understand spending a little extra time for big events, date nights or weddings, but to go to work or the grocery store? No, thanks.

As much as I love what makeup does to my overall look and complexion, spending more than a few minutes in front of the mirror is simply not going to happen for me. When I put on makeup, I still want to look like myself, just a little nicer!

With a toddler and a newborn, I have very little time for applying makeup, and thankfully I’ve nailed down how to apply simple everyday makeup that makes me feel like the best version of myself.

I’m no makeup artist, but this has been a pretty foolproof 6-step natural makeup look that only takes a few minutes!

6 Step Simple Makeup

Before I start my routine, I go through my morning skincare routine—here’s what I’m currently using—and finish up with SPF! This is now an essential part of my routine and my two favorites are either this mineral one designed for your face, or this clean chemical one that works really well as a primer.

Start with a Good Foundation

This Skin Twin Featherweight Foundation launched back in May and it is heaven! It’s very hydrating and has a ton of hyaluronic acid in it which makes it more like a skincare product. It’s lightweight, but provides nice coverage. You can easily layer it if you want more coverage too.

I love how it makes my skin look all day and it does a great job of staying put, which is amazing, especially in the summer. I’ve been using the shade Medium 340, but as I get tanner, I’m thinking I need to go to one or two shades darker for summer. If you need some help finding your shade, click here to make it easier! We added 8 more shades so there’s literally something for everyone.

If you don’t like to wear a ton of makeup and don’t need foundation, then I’d highly recommend this Dew Skin tinted moisturizer. It has SPF in it, so you can skip that step, and a very light tint to it which provides just the slightest amount of coverage for a very “no-makeup” makeup look. For reference, I wear No. 3 in the summer, and a shade lighter, No. 2 in the winter.

Cover-Up & Powder for a Flawless Face

Some days I just skip this because I’m too lazy, but most days, I need it. Especially now with a newborn and some tired mama eyes! This concealer pen is my go-to. It’s easy to use, blends well and provides great coverage for dark circles.

I apply it in a triangle shape under my eyes and use a beauty blender to gently press it in and blend it.

Lastly, I always like to set my face makeup with a quick swipe of loose powder! If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll add a some bronzer around my forehead too, this bronzer in Dune is my favorite.

Apply Eye Liner

For eye makeup, I don’t go too crazy for everyday wear. I don’t always put on eye liner, but I do think it makes me look more pulled together and it’s so quick, so the majority of the time, I do it! It just depends on what I have going on that day. I have a black eye liner as well as a navy eye pencil. I love the navy for casual days because it doesn’t look as fancy and dramatic, but love the black for date nights! I apply it just above my lash line on top and on my inner lash line on the bottom.

Occasionally, I’ll add eye shadow for a little something extra! This gorgeous neutral eye palette is my absolute favorite and has lasted me well over a year. Well worth it in my mind! If I’m going out, I’ll do a fancier eye, but for everyday, I just use one color and my favorites are: Penny, Copper & Sahara.

Don’t Forget Blush

The one makeup step I couldn’t live without—blush! Personally, I feel so washed out when I’m not wearing blush. My go-to blush is this Satin Powder Blush in Nectar. To me, it’s a great color for my olive skin tone. It’s not too pink and has some tan undertones that make it look really natural.

It’s not too bright and looks like a very natural flush. You want to apply the blush on the apples of your cheeks and don’t go too heavy—no one wants to look like a clown. The goal is to have a very natural, but slightly flushed look.

Eyelashes & Brows

Mascara and brow gel instantly elevate the look. Mascara finishes your eyes and make you look more ready, and brow gel helps frame your face by highlighting your brow bones.

I love this volumizing mascara, but have heard amazing things about this clean one too. Make sure to quickly curl your lashes to make them look even better!

As for brows, don’t underestimate what brow gel can do for your look. I naturally have thicker, darker brows and didn’t think I needed it. I was wrong. Adding it makes all the difference! I use the shade Medium and a little goes a long way!

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Final Pop of Lip Color

Last, a pop of color to seal the deal! I love lip glosses and lipsticks and admittedly have way too many these days. But, hey, variety is the spice of life, right?!

I always start with lip balm to keep my lips hydrated and then I apply lip gloss or a lipstick. For everyday wear, lip gloss is easier and keeps my lips a little more hydrated. A few of my favorite Beautycounter gloss colors are: Dahlia (what I’m wearing in these pictures), .

As for lipsticks, my favorites sheer lipsticks are: Currant, Scarlet, Lily & Terra, and for the color intense lipsticks I love: 9 to 5, Garden Party and Girls’ Night.

This shouldn’t come as any surprise, but all of Beauycounter’s makeup is clean which makes me feel so good about using it everyday, especially when kissing sweet, sensitive baby faces!

You can buy any of these individually, but if you’re wanting to overhaul your whole beauty bag, I highly recommend grabbing the Flawless in Five Set that includes foundation, concealer, brow gel, blush, mascara and a lip gloss. Then you can add on any extras you like. Buying it in the kit saves you $40 which means more for other goodies, like a lipstick or that amazing eye palette I love so much!

The Finished Look: Light Brown Smokey Eye

How to apply simple everyday makeup

A simple brown smokey eye for every day wear.

You can complete this look in nine easy steps, and with very reasonably priced products. You can easily change it up to go from daytime to nighttime. Follow along and you’ll have a flawless, matte complexion in no time!

What You’ll Need for a Simple Look

Eyeshadow Palette (Covergirl)

Basic Blending Brush

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Vaseline helps your foundation look natural like no primer ever could.

1. Start With Foundation

Start off with some foundation. If you know foundation will look too heavy on you, then try using a BB Cream or tinted moisturizer.

One trick I like to use is to apply some Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to my face first especially where I have big pores, and then apply a small amount of foundation over that. Vaseline smooths down any tiny peach fuzz I have and just makes everything look more natural.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Eye primers help eyeshadow colors stand out and help your makeup to not crease.

2. Don’t Go Without Eye Primer

Since you will probably be wearing your everyday makeup, all day we need to start off with a good base. Since it’s probably for a more casual day, chances are you will want it to last all day and not smudge. We will need just some simple products. Start with an eye primer and apply it all over the lid and below the eye close to the bottom lash line since you will be putting eyeshadow in both places.

Primer helps the colors appear more vibrant on the skin and helps your makeup to not crease, this is a must if you know you have oily eyelids because what eyeshadow may look good now, won’t look so pretty five hours into your day.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Covergirl’s Country Woods palette is only around $4.00 and is perfect for an every day look.

3. Apply Some Eyeshadow

Next, you need some eyeshadow. Apply a slightly shimmery or matte brown all over the lid, making sure not to apply it into the crease of your eye. Whether the color is matte or shimmery, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s light. Then blend the eye shadow gently upward. Covergirl’s Country Woods Palette has a nice light brown and is a palette you can get your money’s worth from if you plan on using it often. Use the second color from the left as the base color all over your lid. Smudge some underneath your bottom lash line as well to give some illusion of a smokey eye later on.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

A blending brush will ensure you have no awkward harsh edges which wouldn’t look natural for a simple everyday look.

4. Darken and Blend out Harsh Edges

Using the 4th color from the left in the same palette, a darker brown than what is on your lid, apply this eyeshadow in the crease of the eye (the hollow part that sinks into your socket) and blend out the makeup working in circular motions toward the outer side of your eye.

This should give you a simple smoky look, but without being too heavy for a natural look. Apply this eye shadow lightly to the middle of the crease of your eye and connect it with the color you just blended out. Make sure to blend where the two colors meet. Lightly line the bottom of your eyes with this color also, applying it on top of the lighter brown, but not blending downward so much.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

An eyeliner can always bring a look together like no other product can.

5. Lightly Line Your Eyes

The next step is to line your eyes with eyeliner. You can opt for a dark brown eyeliner if black is too harsh for you.

For an everyday look, it’s best to keep the eyeliner just on the top lash line. Here I apply black eyeliner, Scandal Eyes by Rimmel, only to the top outer third of the lash line. After you apply a small amount, take a sponge tip applicator and lightly dab and drag in small motions to smudge out the eyeliner.

You can also tightline your lashes to make them appear fuller. Just lightly apply eyeliner to your top waterline by lifting up the eyelashes.

6. Apply a Hint of Mascara

In this step, apply your favorite mascara. Only apply it to the outer third of your top eyelashes to give a nice winged out effect. Dip your brush in again and wipe off excess mascara on a tissue, then go in an apply a hint of mascara to your bottom eye lashes as well.

You should not apply more than one coat for a natural look, but if you have particularly sparse lashes go ahead and apply a second coat as needed. I recommend using a spoolie then to separate out any clumps that may have formed in your eyelashes if your mascara did clump.

One mascara that doesn’t clump on me is Smashbox’s Full Exposure mascara. But you do need to wipe excess off the brush if you decide to use this mascara because the wand is large.

Let’s face it, we all love makeup, it’s just sometimes makeup doesn’t love us. We’ve all put on the wrong colour foundation, or blended the wrong combination of eyeshadows from our palette. This can lead to a makeup disaster real quick, but with the right knowledge of the colours and shades that work best for your skin tone, you could be well on your way to mastering these easy everyday makeup looks.

1. Pretty Eye Makeup for Blue Eyes

Blue-eyed girls look great with a vast range of shades on their eyes, but shades that work particular well include peach, gold, orange, and brown, and especially this beautiful dusky pink that you can see here.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Here’s another great tip you can learn from this great makeup look also – that light shimmer on the inner corner of the eye can really help to make you light bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when all you really want to do is crawl back underneath the duvet and spend another few years in bed.

2. Matte Brown

Dark eyes really are stunning, and once again, there are a range of shades that you can play around with in your makeup palette. Deeper shades often work better against these deeper eye colours, and blacks, browns, dark greens, navy blues, and even dark greys are all great shades to play around with.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Here you can see a very muted brown / neutral cut crease, with is a lot easier to do once you get your hands on a fluffy blending brush. Incorrect blending doesn’t look great, especially on the one part of your face that everyone will notice – your eyes.

3. Makeup Idea for Green Eyes

Green eyes look really great with purple and lilac shades, but pinks, plums, and variations of all of these often work really well.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

A light shimmer on the eyelid is all it takes to brighten up these pretty green eyes, and one thing that women often forget is that quick slick of colour underneath the lower lash line too. This can hide a multitude of sins, including one too many heavy nights out!

4. Smoked Out Winged Liner

For the days when you don’t have time to do a full eyeliner kitten flick, fake it by just using your eyeshadow. In fact, your eyeshadow could come in handy much more often than you think it might.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Take a peek at your palette – the lighter shades are easily flick over the eyelid, and also in place of highlighter when you have none, and the dark shades can work in the place of eyeliner with the right angled brush, and even to work your eyebrows. With a touch of Vaseline, any of the shades in your palette can be made into a lipgloss, and if you have a broken shade, you could even mix it in with clear gloss to make your very own last-minute nail polish too.

5. White Eyeliner

White eyeliner is a really amazing thing to have in your makeup bag, and for a whole host of reasons. You can use it along your lower waterline, just like you can see here, to instantly brighten up the eyes and make you less tired when you need much more sleep than you actually get.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

You can also use white eyeliner to go over the entire eyelid as a primer for bright eyeshadows too. Every colour looks instantly brighter when it’s been placed against that white backdrop, and it really helps to bring a bold and bright look to life.

6. Bronzey & Glowy

This is a great look for summer, and also for when you really can’t be bothered to do anything else. You can achieve this entire look just using your highlighter and contour palette, you just need to learn how to use it.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

The darker shades, again, can be used on the eyebrows as well as for contouring, and if you don’t have any darker eyeshadows to blend into the cut crease of your eye, you could just use the darker shades in your blusher or contour set.

The lips, just like we suggested before, are the nude / rose gold shades of the palette just mixed in with lip gloss of petroleum jelly, and a touch of highlighter all over always helps to make you look (and feel) more awake. Plus, the whole look will only take five to ten minutes.

7. Natural Makeup Look

Isn’t it funny how the most natural of makeup looks always seem to take the longest? If you want an easy way to get this simple and neutral look, a nude palette is definitely the way forward. As we’ve already stated, you can use everything in your palette on your face, making it the most versatile bit of kit you’ll ever invest in, and learning to use your highlighter properly is always a very good trick. Highlighter can make you look awake even when you haven’t slept for a week! (Thankfully!)

How to apply simple everyday makeup

That slick of white eyeliner in the lower lash / waterline once again helps to make you appear more alert, and it also helps to make your eyes look bigger too. And don’t be afraid to leave the eyeliner alone from time to time. Sometimes it’s good to let your skin breathe, and in order to achieve this, basic, barely-there makeup is perfect.

8. No Makeup Makeup

This no-makeup, makeup look shows how important a decent brow is. Your brow can instantly transform the way your face looks, and a quick tidy-up is never to be underestimated.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

If you only have time to do two things in the morning before you rush out the door, we’d suggest a few minutes getting your eyebrows “on fleek”, and add some mascara. We’ll even admit to using last night’s makeup a couple of times to get this barely-there look … Multitasking!

9. Everyday Winged Liner

For when you don’t have time to do total eyeliner, but the thought of using no eyeliner in your makeup regime fills you with dread, how about this? It’s an everyday winged liner look that actually doesn’t take too long to achieve.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Because the eyeliner isn’t completely over the eyelid, getting it spot on will only take you half the time, and it’s much easier to get those outer flicks right than the inner bits, don’t you think? There are so many tutorials, particularly on Instagram, on how to achieve the perfect eyeliner flick, and we’d suggest watching a few. Picking up a few makeup hacks here and there is never a bad thing.

10. Pink Lips

Who doesn’t love a baby-pink pop? We certainly do, and that’s why we fell a little bit in love with this pink lipped look, one of the easy everyday makeup looks you should definitely jump on.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

In order to get beautiful, luscious lips like this, you’re going to need to start with a good base, and that means taking care of your pucker-ups! Make sure you always carry a lip balm with you, especially when the weather gets particularly hot, or particularly cold. Try to look for lip products that contain some sort of SPF too – this will help to protect them from the powerful ray of the sun, which can burn you even when it’s not that hot or sunny outside.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

We all have piles and piles of makeup, more than we actually need, but how do you know what’s worth keeping, what products you should be using, and what you may be using incorrectly? Well I had quite the Sunday yesterday. I had an amazing Skype session with makeup artist Troy Edwards through Maestro Market, a new online platform that directly connects you with affordable experts of all kinds. He walked me through an easy, everyday makeup routine using products I already own, and taught me step-by-step how to apply them correctly. He started off by getting to know my style, both in fashion and beauty, and then came the fun part. We literally went through every single makeup product I own (not kidding, every single product), and sorted them into piles:

How to apply simple everyday makeup

For each item, he had me explain what I like and don’t like about the product. Then he told me which pile to put it in. It felt so good to get rid of so much crap that had just been sitting in my makeup box. Once we finished sorting the makeup, he gave me a one-on-one lesson on how to use the products we chose to keep. Let me tell you, I thought I had been doing my makeup all right, but I was so wrong. Just the slightest tweaks made such a huge difference. Take a look:

Step 1: Foundation

Since my skin is dry, we decided my NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer was the best way to go. I had always applied it with my hands, but he showed me how to use my liquid foundation brush. First, you use your fingers to dab the product in 4 spots on your face. Then use the brush to blend it. On your forehead, brush back and forth. On your cheeks, brush down and away from the center of your face. And on your chin, also brush back and forth.

How to apply simple everyday makeup

Step 2: Concealer

While I’d been using this Benefit Boi-ing Concealer for some time, it often felt thick and cakey under my eyes. He showed me an awesome trick that really blends the product smoothly. Add a drop of moisturizer to your brush before adding the product. Then dab the product about 4 times under your eyes. Smooth with the brush, then use your middle finger to lightly dab underneath your eyes. The heat of your finger helps blend the concealer even more for a really natural finish. I also have been a huge fan of this Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat brightener. I love the luminous effect it has on the skin.

Step 3: Powder

I had no idea but I’d been using the wrong brush to apply my powder for way too long. I had this small kabuki brush from bareMinerals that he recommended I use instead. He said to apply it in circular motions to buffer it into the skin for a natural look.

Step 4: Bronzer

Now this is where he really blew my mind. With all of the contouring talk out there, I had gotten so confused on how to really use my bronzer to the best of its abilities. He recommended to avoid contouring during the day as it’s meant more for poor lighting like on stage or for a night out. I had also been using the wrong brush for this as well. Bronzer should be applied with a large fluffy brush, which I already owned but never used. Swirl the brush in the product, tap the brush so some product comes off (important!), then start with your cheeks. Sweep the brush up and down starting at the outer part of your cheek, working your way in. Repeat on the other side. Then finish with your forehead, chin, and neck.

Step 5: Blush

Yup, you guessed it. I was using the wrong brush for this as well. Blush requires a fluffy yet dense brush like the one I use below. He also got me to try a new color I’d never tried before. I’d always opted for more peachy tones, but this petal pink is really pretty too and works with my skin tone. Smile and apply to the apples of your cheeks.

Step 6: Eyes

It was great to learn a simple eye makeup routine for everyday. First, I start with a “bone” colored shadow and cover my entire lid. If you have a fluffy shadow brush, use that, but I didn’t so I just used my finger. Then pick a taupe color and use a denser shadow brush to dab, not sweep, the product at the bottom of your lid and work your way up to the crease. This is a great way to not only avoid getting product on your cheeks, but to also layer shadow to control how intense you want the color. He approved of the way I applied my eyeliner (woohoo!) with an angled brush, a bit of water, and powder liner. He recommended navy for my blue eyes. As for mascara, he recommended dabbing the wand on a tissue first, then wiggling it at the route of your lashes and sweeping up.

Step 7: Lips

Last but not least, lips! For everyday, he recommended a really pretty combination of light pink lipstick (bareMinerals Moxie Lipstick in Speak Your Mind) and coral gloss (bareMinerals Moxie Lipgloss in Party Starter). I also admitted my fear of bright colored lipstick and he showed me a great way to apply them that isn’t overwhelming. Just dab the lipstick on your bottom lip and rub your lips together for just a hunt of color. Then add gloss to bring out the color a bit more.
