How to ask a tarot question

When people sit down at the tarot table, they may not know what to ask. Frankly, you can ask whatever you want. Most readers will tell you that they have answered all sorts of questions from the usual (“will I find love?”) to the bizarre (“did my haircut bring me bad luck?). Nothing is off-limits.

BUT (yes, there is a but), there is a n art to crafting a good question. An earnest and well-thought out query will lead to a clear answer whereas an ambiguous question won’t. Also, coming to a reading and expecting the tarot reader to pull answers out of thin air without a question is like going to the dentist and refusing to open your mouth. That’s frustrating for the reader — and probably not going to give you much to chew on (pun intended).

A good question forms the proper foundation for a helpful tarot reading.

Begin by getting clear on what you want from your session. What do you need to know? Which issues are the most pressing at the time you sit down? Know what your priorities are — and that can help your reader craft a session that is tailored to your needs.

Next, avoid “will I” and “should I” type questions. These are disempowering and create a feeling as if the future some sort of thing that “just happens to you” and is out of your hands (it isn’t). Also, “should I” questions put the responsibility for your future in the tarot reader’s lap. Your decisions need to come from you — and tarot is merely the guide that shows the possibilities.

Frame the questions with “what do I need to know______,” or “how can I _______.” These fill-in-the-blanks formats lead to helpful answers that keep the reins in your fingers.

For example “what do I need to know about finding a partner” is far better than “will I find a man” because it can give you useful information that leads to inspired action. As I often say, tarot is not a passive act — and neither is life!

Here are 10 great questions to ask followed by a few that you should scratch off your list immediately:

10 Great Questions to Ask

  • What do I need to know about this situation?
  • What’s the best path I can take at this time?
  • How can I improve my relationship with ___________?
  • What can I do to make __________happen?
  • What am I not seeing at this time?
  • In what way am I holding myself back?
  • What can I expect if I choose _____________?
  • How can I understand _________?
  • Where should I direct my energy at this time?
  • Why does this pattern keep showing up in my life — and what can I do to change it?

3 Questions You Shouldn’t Ask Your Tarot Reader

When will I die? This is a morbid question and most ethical tarot readers won’t touch it with a ten-foot pole.

How does X feel about me? Tarot is not for mind reading. If you want to know how someone feels, ask them directly.

What’s going on with my ex and her current partner? Spying on your ex is a big tarot no-no. It’s none of your business. Instead of obsessing over their life, move on with yours.

These tips should help you get a clear, helpful reading. Ask away!

Although the Tarot can’t tell us exactly what will happen in the future, it can certainly give us a glimpse into what lies ahead while inspiring us to propel ourselves forward through life with love, happiness and gratitude.

Whether you’re a Tarot reading newbie with your own pack of cards or you’re about to see a professional reader, it’s important to ask the right questions if you want good answers.

As a general rule, try to avoid questions that start with ‘will’ or ‘when’ and avoid asking any questions that are likely to evoke a yes or no answer. Instead, ask questions that start with ‘who’ ‘what’ ‘where’ and ‘why. These are much more likely to bring out accurate cards that can help you make the most of your future.

These examples of good questions to ask the Tarot cards and how to ask your own questions can really help you get the most out of the Tarot. Like any tool, Tarot cards are only as good as the way they’re used and improving your questions will help you get the most out of your readings.

As a general rule of thumb focus the questions on yourself, take ownership of the situation, focus on your future and ask open questions. Don’t rush your questions and take your time to understand the answers.

How to Ask The Tarot a Question

I’m constantly telling people there are no hard set rules with the Tarot so you can ask whatever you want but if you want to get the most out of each reading these are my general suggestions on how to form your question.

Focus the Question on Yourself

Don’t misunderstand me here. You can still do a Tarot spread for how someone feels about you but, in general, the focus of your question should focus on you and the things you can control.

Avoid asking: “Does my crush have feelings for someone else?”

Instead, ask: “How can I strengthen the bond between me and my crush?”

Take Ownership of the Situation

Don’t fall into the trap of shrugging off responsibility. You want the cards to be able to give you guidance on what you should be doing to improve things. Not just sitting back and waiting for good things to come to you.

Avoid asking: “Will I win the lottery?”

Instead, ask:“ What can I do to better my financial situation? What blocks me from financial success and how can I overcome it?”

Focus on Your Future (Optional)

This one is completely optional but call it personal preference. Don’t dwell on the past when it’s not something you can change. Focus on the future and the things you can work toward.

Avoid asking: “Did I do the right thing?”

Instead, ask: “What do I need to do right now to make the most of this situation?”

Good Example Tarot Questions

For a better reading, you need to learn how to ask what you really want to know. You also need to ask your question straight forward. For example, if you want to know what you need to do to make a change in yourself then ask that. Don’t put the blame on someone else by asking what you can do to make them change. You are responsible for your own self.

Maybe you aren’t asking the best questions for yourself. So, we’re going to look at some of the best questions to ask the tarot cards.

  1. What can I do to have more peace in my life? – All of us can probably use more peace in our lives. Let’s face it, life, in general, is extremely stressful. Being able to know what to do to have more peace in your hectic life will only enhance your mood and your happiness. Maybe you need to have less dramatic friends. Maybe your job is just too stressful and you need a career change. Whatever it might be, be willing to make the necessary changes that is called for.
  2. How can I be more helpful to others? – This is a wonderful question as long as it is an honest one. Make sure that you seriously want to help others before asking this. Asking dishonest questions will only hurt yourself and cause an inaccurate reading.
  3. What is my best talent? – Each of us has plenty of talents whether we realize it or not. Focusing on the wrong talent can be a waste of time. Find out what you are best at, one that comes naturally and focus on that. You may love to sing but you might not really be any good at it while gardening may come so naturally to you that you don’t see it as a talent. Find out what you’re great at and put it to use.
  4. How can I learn to trust people? – This is an excellent question. What made you not trust people? Did someone hurt you? Take what the tarot cards say and really consider their answer. Remember, you shouldn’t make one person pay for someone else betraying you. Trust until that person gives you a reason not to.
  5. Is there anything I need more of in my life? – Maybe you need more spiritual belief in your life. Maybe more time spent with family is what you need. It could be that you need more self-confidence. Ask, find out and apply it accordingly.
  6. Who is the bad influence in my life? – Usually, though it might be heartbreaking, the bad influence in our lives is someone we are really close to and like a lot. We choose to give them the power to influence us. Then we don’t know how to get that power back. Be willing to rid your life of the bad influence if you really want a change for the better.
  7. What in my past do I need to let go of? Letting go isn’t always easy to do. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things to do. What is it that you need to let go of? Your ex? Is it something bad that you did? Did you make a big mistake that haunts you? A good question to ask the tarot cards. Just remember, if it’s important enough to ask about, it’s important enough to do something about.
  8. Is my current partner the right one for me? This has to be the number one question that everyone asks. Of course, you want to know if you are with the right person for you. The question is, are you going to do something about it if you aren’t with the right one? If not, then don’t waste your time asking.
  9. Why do I feel so unworthy? This is a deep question and a wonderful one. The thing is if you look deep enough, you can probably answer this one yourself. Did you get kicked to the curb in a relationship? Are you in a verbally or physically abusive relationship? Maybe you just have never known your own self-worth. Any single one or a combination of these things can cause you to feel unworthy. You need to remember that everyone is worthy, yes, even you. Whatever answer the cards give to you on this question, work on knowing your own self-worth.
  10. How do I live my best life? – Straight forward and to the point. What makes you happy? What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning? What do you look forward to the most in life? Figure these things out before you ask the tarot cards your question. Be honest with yourself about these things. Once you have your answer, go out and live the best life for YOU, not anyone else. Don’t try to live someone else’s life. Don’t try to be someone or something that you’re not.

As you can see there are many worthwhile questions that you can ask the tarot cards. Don’t waste your time on things that you really don’t want to know. Ask the important questions. Ask the life-changing questions.

If you aren’t sure yet what questions to ask for yourself, make a list of questions that you think you may want to ask. Now read over that list and ask yourself, “Do I really want to know this?” and “Will the answer to this make any difference in my life?”. You might also want to ask yourself, “Will I be willing to change whatever needs to be changed?” If the honest answer is “no”, then don’t bother asking.

Tarot can help you unveil your future with regards to love, health, work, and, of course, money. How many of us deal with financial problems, with dissatisfaction, or just want to know what the future holds when it comes to money? Will we ever be rich? Will we ever get the raise we are hoping for? Tarot has all the answer you need but, to truly get them, you need to ask the right question the right way! Let’s see then how to ask tarot questions about money.

The importance of asking the right questions about money

How to ask a tarot question

Sometimes in this life it is not the what but the how. Something similar happens in tarot; it is much better to ask a specific and simple question than a complex or diffuse one. You should avoid asking questions like “when?” Or “who?” It is better to ask questions that you can reflect on.

When we consult the tarot, it is better to keep things in perspective; this way we will get valuable information. If we ask the cards about our entire life, they may not be able to give us a concrete answer, since we are the masters of our destiny. The best thing is to ask questions about the present or near future, so the cards will be able to tell you how things would be if you follow the current path or help you decide to change your path if you did not like the answer.

Money, business, and fortune are widely consulted subjects in tarot. The need to confirm and clarify one’s financial or economic outlook is constantly latent. Nobody wants to be wrong, nobody wants to lose. We all seek prosperity, abundance, and well-being, so we try to win opportunities and avoid threats.

The questions in this topic are generally focused on taking challenges and risks, clarifying doubts, and making decisions. They help you predict your fortune and business or career opportunities. Focus your thinking towards wealth and progress, as well as improving your status and economic development.

Believe it or not, tarot reinforces your growth strategies with wisdom and by showing you those values and skills that are best developed in you.

Getting ready to ask questions about money

Being a very specific topic, right before asking tarot questions about money, you should take some time to truly focus on what you want. You can do this in many different ways. You can:

  • Meditate on the topic. You can choose any guided meditation with a visualization about wealth and money to center yourself, focus on the topic and finally have a clear vision of what you want.
  • Journaling about it is a great way to truly know what you desire. So many times, we are called to kind of follow a path that is pre-written by others, by those around us, by our parents, or even pre-written by ourselves during a certain time of our life. But what do you want now? Why do you want it so badly? How do you want to feel while bringing money into your life?

Don’t forget to really surrender to your intuition and don’t be scared of what you dream of! Unveil your true desire and ask tarot questions about it to know if it will happen and how you can let it manifest!

Best questions about money

  • What do I need to know about my finances?
  • What can I do to improve my current situation?
  • Is my current job the right one to make more money?
  • What do I need to know about a raise?
