How to attend ted talks

On May 3, 2014 I drove up to Seattle’s UW Tower to deliver my first TED talk at the third annual TEDxUofW.

TEDx events are independently organized, officially licensed, and designed to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences.

How to be Invited to Share a TED talk

All TED events are managed by a committee, including one that oversees the speaker selection. Often, committee members have some ideas on who they would like to attend and speak at the event. However, all of the events also accept nominations for speakers as well, especially those who fit their specific theme. Obviously, it is much more difficult to get an invitation to the TED global stage, but the nominations are open to the public through their official website.

It’s usually a little easier to get an invitation to the TEDx because there are fewer nominations and committees favor speakers with a local connection and impact. To find upcoming events in your area, visit the TEDx event listing site. If you have “an idea worth sharing” and it fits the theme of a local event, you can reach out to the committee and submit a proposal. The more narrowly you can define the idea (keep it simple, memorable, and leave a profound impact), the better. TED committees care more about your ideas than your resume, so focus on an idea that would be interesting to their audience, that fits their theme.

Creating and Delivering a TED talk

TEDx and TED talks follow the same rules. Some of them include:

1. Every talk must be less than 18 minutes
2. Speakers cannot have a commercial agenda (promoting their own products/books in a commercial fashion)
3. Speakers cannot read their talks
4. Talks need to be factual and realistic
5. No inflammatory political or religious agenda

If you watch several TED talks, you can get a pretty good feel for the general style presented – as well as how speakers can incorporate their own personality into them. In fact, I would recommend finding and watching videos from your specific TED or TEDx conference that you can get a feel for the stage, personality, and history of the event.

When you are accepted to an event, you’ll be given a copy of the TEDx Speaker Guide. You’ll then be asked to submit an outline for your proposal, which the committee may help develop. Often, they’ll ask for a preliminary version of your talk (delivered in person or via video), which might receive further comments or recommendations. The same will be done for your slides, if you plan on using any during your talk.

Once your talk is set, you will need to rehearse it over and over again.

Not only will your committee ask you for the length of your talk, but you will be expected to deliver it within seconds of that promised length. Every speaker is given a countdown clock and they cannot exceed the time (nor fall too short of it). Many events expect speakers to finish with 3-5 seconds on either side of their target time. The only way to deliver this kind of consistency is plenty of practice (I recommend using a countdown clock during your rehearsals).

Also, even if you create your presentation slides in PowerPoint, you will not be able to rely on the “notes” section. Some TED events allow a presenter view, some only offer a mirror image of what is being presented to the audience. If you have the latter, you will need to intimately know the order of your slides and won’t be able to rely on notes or previews to assist with pacing you talk.

When delivering your TED talk, here are some tips:

1. Focus more time and energy on delivering specific points rather than specific words
2. Keep your “idea worth sharing” clear throughout the entire talk, it should come back to one idea that makes the audience reflect, engage, and talk about
3. Spend as much time thinking about your delivery as the content being presented
4. Use emotion to drive your stories: your talk should have a “personality”
5. A little humor goes a long way
6. Have a contingency plan if your plan is moving more quickly or slowly than expected
7. On the morning of the talk, do some vocal warm-ups to keep your voice strong and clear
8. Have fun – don’t worry if you don’t get all of your points in (the audience won’t know if something was left out)

My Experience on the TED stage

The TED event was a lot of fun – not only was I able to work with a group of volunteers who were passionate about making an impact on their community, but I also had the privilege of being able to share the stage with some very inspiring speakers as well. There were many opportunities to connect with the audience, to spend more time elaborating on thoughts in a less formal way, and to hear other perspectives as well.

For me, TED was as much about the preparation as it was the day of the event itself. The process of learning how to condense a speech into a rapid-fire/high impact delivery, crafting a slide presentation that is an aid rather than a crutch, and from hearing about many approaches to the topic provided a wonderful opportunity to grow as a speaker.

I definitely had fun on stage – time moved much more quickly up there than the many rehearsals of my talk. And even though I was speaking about a rather serious and complex topic (racism), I wanted to interject levity into it because that can sometimes dismantle complicated ideas.

It was my first TED event as a speaker, and I certainly hope it won’t be my last.

One of the best ways to learn from the experts is to attend TED conferences/talks. For many TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) talks will be a good learning experience and for some, it could be a life-changing event. But the way how you would like to get this learning experience depends on your budget. If you afford to travel and spend quite some money, then you can attend the TED conference. But if you are bound by your budget then you can opt to attend a TEDx event in your local area.

Option 1: Attending a TED Talk Conference

Get a TED.com account

Firstly, you need to get a TED.com account, to apply for a TED conference. You can do so by visiting https://auth.ted.com/users/new. Account opening process is very simple and requires only your basic info.

Choose the TED conference you wish to attend.

Once you log in your account, you can see a list of upcoming TED conference on its website: https://www.ted.com/attend/conferences/ted-conference. You can check each conferences topic and description and choose the one that interests you.

Note: TED conferences’ attendance list gets filled up very early, mostly several months in advance. So, plan your attendance.

Select your membership plan.

Vanguard, Standard, Donar and Patron – These are the four different types of membership that TED offers. If it is your first time applying for a TED conference, we recommend you to choose the Vanguard option, and of course, it is the most affordable plan, priced at USD 5,000.

The other three plans add up in price, and perks, ranging from $10,000 to USD 250,000.

Option 2: Buying Tickets for a Local TEDx Talk

Lookup for a TEDx Event in your locality.

Many local organizations partner with TED to launch TEDx Events. You can search for upcoming such events by checking https://www.ted.com/tedx/events. And choose and attend an event that suits your interests.

Buy tickets on TED.com.

You can buy the ticket through TED.com for the TEDx events as you don’t have to apply for the ticket as in for TED conferences. The ticket prices range from $75-$100 USD, which comparatively cheaper than the tickets for the TED conferences.

Alternatively buy tickets online through TEDx partners.

If the tickets for your local TEDx event got sold out. Don’t get despaired, you can alternatively try to buy a ticket from the local partner of the event. You can find who is the partner for a particular TEDx event with a simple online search. Many TEDx partners sell tickets on their social media handles too. So watch out!

    How to attend ted talks

    “How can I get a chance to talk at TED?”

    It’s no wonder that everyone wants to speak on TED’s stage–doing so automatically establishes you as a thought leader in your industry. Because TED wants ideas worth sharing, the chance of your talk going viral makes it the modern equivalent of the printing press.

    Social psychologist Amy Cuddy even says in her book Presence that her ability to write a book was a direct result of the popularity of her TED Talk. That’s the influence of TED in action.

    How to reach the TED talk stage is the number one question I’m asked daily as a TEDx speaker coach. And while talking at TED is a great goal–it’s the gold standard for public speaking–the road there isn’t one that will happen overnight.

    But it is doable.

    First and foremost, it’s important to realize TED is looking for “ideas worth spreading.” They aren’t looking for motivational speeches or an elevator pitch about your business. Do you have an astounding and innovative organization or a new way of tackling an old problem? You’ve taken the first step.

    Speaking at TED automatically ups your authority and cements you as an expert in your industry. Start taking the journey to TED by reading these three helpful road signs:

    1. Be nominated or nominate yourself

    The most direct way to approach TED is through a nomination, either by someone else or yourself. When nominating yourself, TED requires a description of your “idea worth spreading” that your talk will focus on and links to videos of your previous speeches or presentations.

    But be cautious about nominating yourself: Diane Michlig, executive producer and curator of TEDxSanJoseCA, says, “I generally do not find myself drawn to people who suggest themselves as speakers.”

    If being nominated seems like a task within itself, try the TED Fellows Program.

    2. Apply to the TED Fellows Program

    So, what is the TED Fellows Program exactly?

    Well, according to TED, it’s a program that “provides transformational support to a global network of 400 visionaries . to create positive change around the world.”

    In short, the program takes deep thinkers and teaches them to talk like TED. Fellows are chosen through an open application program every year. A distinguished candidate is one of the following:

    • someone who made a remarkable achievement.
    • someone with strength of character.
    • someone with an innovative approach to solving world problems.

    Have a great idea but don’t know if you have the chops to deliver a speech? TED Fellows was designed for you.

    3. Start at a local TEDx

    The TED Fellowship Program is difficult to get into, much like securing a nomination.

    Your chances of getting into a local TEDx event are much higher. TEDx events are independently organized but TED endorsed showcases run in the same manner as the annual TED conference.

    Do your research before choosing a TEDx event. Not all TEDx conferences are created equal. One may have a theme your talk would fit into perfectly. With a little research, you can find the TEDx event fit for you.

    Some TEDx events also carry more weight than others. These are called level two events and require a higher level of public speaking experience.

    TEDx is like the minor league for TED. To graduate to a fully-fledged TED Talk, you need to play a little ball first–the better your TEDx Talk, the better your chance with TED.

    Whichever Path You Choose.

    You’re going to need a talk to show the organizers that you can talk like TED. But what goes into a TED Talk besides adhering to the time limit? Writing your talk is everything.

    Start with your message. TED is all about ideas. Once you hone in on yours, create an outline to help you explain why the world should care. Then, excite your audience with memorable imagery–a story–to entice them and show your idea in action. Finally, edit, edit, edit. Cut the fat and streamline your speech.

    To begin on the path to your very own TED Talk, first craft a TED-worthy talk. Then, start with one of these three stepping stones. With perseverance and presence, you’ll be on your way to earning your invitation to present at TED.

    It may seem like an impossible dream to join the likes of Al Gore or Anthony Robbins as speakers at TED, the legendary ideas conference. But with the creation of TEDx, independently-organized TED-like conferences throughout the world, it’s now possible for far more people to become speakers. And there’s the potential for breakout success: some of the most popular TED talks of all time, including Simon Sinek’s “Start with Why” discussion of leadership, which has garnered more than 16 million views, began as TEDx talks that were uploaded to the main TED site. So how can you become a TEDx speaker and share your “idea worth spreading”? Here are five strategies to follow.

    Start By Researching Future TEDx Events. By the time you’re reading about an upcoming TEDx event in the newspaper, it’s far too late to become a speaker. “A week before our event, we got an email from a woman saying, ‘Hey, I really want to speak at your event next week!’” recalls C. Todd Lombardo, the curator of TEDx Somerville, just outside Boston. That didn’t fly, as many TEDx events pride themselves on solidifying their lineup and prepping their speakers well in advance – at least a month, says Lombardo, and sometimes six months to a year. To find upcoming events, visit the TEDx event page to find out who’s running a program at least several months in the future.

    Investigate the Application Process. For some TEDx events, like Lombardo’s, there’s an open call for speakers that’s available on their website. And even for others that don’t issue an open call, many will consider proposals. “Everybody can write to us on our web page and send a proposal,” says Antonella Broglia, curator of TEDx Madrid. “In fact, many people do and we respond to them all. We always follow up and speak directly with those who look interesting.” The secret is making sure your application stands out . Broglia says a prospective speaker should “send me half a page max of text explaining his idea, why is it new, why him [is he an expert on this?] and some video to check how he presents.” Lombardo agrees. “I think some people cut and paste [their speaking proposals].” While some proposals he received were thoughtful, for others, he got the sense that “you don’t know me or my community, and yet you want to speak here…it seems like they’re trying to get themselves on stage.” In his case, he prefers proposals that cite a connection to Somerville or a rationale for why the topic would be of interest to locals.

    Respect the Theme. Not all TEDx events have a stated theme, but some do – and if you’re proposing a talk, it behooves you to respect that. TEDx Somerville’s theme was “Movement,” a topic specific enough to ground the discussion (a talk about the new waffle iron you invented wouldn’t fit) but one that can be interpreted broadly, with performers and speakers including aerial dancers, an urban planner, a nutrition expert, and a nonprofit advocate whose group teaches basketball to children in India. Similarly, when Lombardo organized a previous TEDx in Spain, the theme was “10 years from now,” in which they recruited experts to make predictions about the future.

    Make Yourself Findable. One way to land a TEDx talk is to be a friend or colleague of the organizer (or of a past speaker, who may be able to recommend you). Another is to submit a proposal. But a third important route is being discovered, which happens quite frequently. Says Broglia, “Many, many of [the speakers] we did not know before. We found out about them by researching the fields we wanted represented in the mix of ideas of the day. Some speakers we knew, but many we discovered and revealed them to our audience; that is our job.” She’s not looking for professional speakers; instead, she wants regular people doing fascinating things. So make sure you can be found: share your ideas through blogging, tweeting, and speaking to other groups, so that you start to build a buzz.

    Understand the Nature of TEDx. Like the TED conference, the goal of TEDx is to share “ideas worth spreading.” That generally doesn’t mean your company’s new widget. “A lot of people want to sell something, promote their business or product, or are just trying to promote their career or their business,” says Lombardo. That’s not the kind of speaker he’s seeking. Instead, focus on how your story can add value to others and why you’re the right person to tell it. And recognize that TEDx talks, while great publicity, will not be a direct moneymaker: they’re not allowed to pay speakers. “Do some homework on the event and what they’re about before sending in proposals,” says Lombardo. “We received inquiries from somebody from Atlanta, people from different countries, and I’m thinking, ‘Are you flying yourself here? Because we’re not going to be flying anybody in.’ I wonder if people just don’t realize that. Because TED is so well produced and they have such a big budget and do such a great job, I think people may have those expectations about TEDx.” That’s one reason he suggests starting your inquiries with TEDx events in your area.

    Even if your proposal is fantastic, you may not be selected because your topic doesn’t fit with that event’s particular mix of speakers. When evaluating potential speakers, “I ask, ‘How does this fit with the theme?’” says Lombardo. “How does it fit in the puzzle? You have to build a mosaic. Does this relate to the theme and have a good story?” If you do get turned down, keep trying; some communities run TEDx events multiple times a year, and there are thousands around the world. If you make the effort to target your proposals and are persistent, your great idea will soon start spreading.

    1. Be nominated or nominate yourself

    The most direct way to approach TED is through a nomination, either by someone else or yourself. When nominating yourself, TED requires a description of your “idea worth spreading” that your talk will focus on and links to videos of your previous speeches or presentations.

    But be cautious about nominating yourself: Diane Michlig, executive producer and curator of TEDxSanJoseCA, says, “I generally do not find myself drawn to people who suggest themselves as speakers.”

    2. Apply to the TED Fellows Program

    So, what is the TED Fellows Program exactly?

    Well, according to TED, it’s a program that “provides transformational support to a global network of 400 visionaries . to create positive change around the world.”

    In short, the program takes deep thinkers and teaches them to talk like TED. Fellows are chosen through an open application program every year. A distinguished candidate is one of the following:

    • someone who made a remarkable achievement.
    • someone with strength of character.
    • someone with an innovative approach to solving world problems.

    3. Start at a local TEDx

    The TED Fellowship Program is difficult to get into, much like securing a nomination.

    Your chances of getting into a local TEDx event are much higher. TEDx events are independently organized but TED endorsed showcases run in the same manner as the annual TED conference.

    Do your research before choosing a TEDx event. Not all TEDx conferences are created equal. One may have a theme your talk would fit into perfectly. With a little research, you can find the TEDx event fit for you.

    Some TEDx events also carry more weight than others. These are called level two events and require a higher level of public speaking experience.

    TEDx is like the minor league for TED. To graduate to a fully-fledged TED Talk, you need to play a little ball first–the better your TEDx Talk, the better your chance with TED.

    You’re going to need a talk to show the organizers that you can talk like TED. But what goes into a TED Talk besides adhering to the time limit? Writing your talk is everything.

    Start with your message. TED is all about ideas. Once you hone in on yours, create an outline to help you explain why the world should care. Then, excite your audience with memorable imagery–a story–to entice them and show your idea in action. Finally, edit, edit, edit. Cut the fat and streamline your speech.

    To begin on the path to your very own TED Talk, first craft a TED-worthy talk. Then, start with one of these three stepping stones. With perseverance and presence, you’ll be on your way to earning your invitation to present at TED.
