Owls are not common backyard birds, but they can be highly desirable guests and are incredible to hear and observe when they do visit. With the right preparation, any birder can learn how to attract owls to the yard on a regular basis.

Why We Love Owls

Owls are some of the most beloved raptors, and their silent flight, large eyes, mournful calls, and nocturnal behavior makes them both magical and mysterious. Because owls are not highly active during the day, a backyard owl can coexist with other backyard birds, and as excellent hunters, they can help control squirrel and rodent populations. Smaller owls may also help control large insects, and owls will occasionally catch reptiles such as snakes and lizards as well. Because they do not eat birdseed, these birds are also inexpensive to attract compared to birds with hearty appetites for costly seed or other foods.

There are more than 200 species of owls in the world, but only a few are comfortable enough to become backyard species. The most common backyard owls include:

  • Barn owl
  • Barred owl
  • Eastern screech-owl
  • Great horned owl
  • Western screech-owl

Depending on the local habitat, regional owl ranges, and how attractive the yard is for these birds of prey, other owls may also become backyard visitors.

As with attracting any birds, the key to attracting owls is to provide their four basic needs: food, water, shelter, and nesting sites.

  • Food: Owls will not visit bird feeders, but it is possible to provide a steady food source for these hunters. Because owls eat mice, voles, gophers, and similar small rodents, birders who have mice nearby are more likely to attract owls. Leaving grass uncut, adding a brush pile, and leaving seed on the ground will make the yard more mouse-friendly, which in turn makes the habitat more owl-friendly. Avoid using poisons or traps to eliminate mice or other prey, and let owls take care of the problem instead.
  • Water: Owls get the vast majority of the fluid they need in their diets from the prey they consume, and they are not frequent visitors to bird baths. In hotter climates and during the summer, however, owls may visit slightly larger, deeper birdbaths to drink or bathe. Providing this type of water source in a quiet, secluded area is more likely to encourage owls to visit.
  • Shelter: Owls need somewhat dense, mature trees with good trunks to roost during the day, preferably in a shaded, secluded area. Both coniferous and deciduous trees are suitable if they are a good size. Empty owl nest boxes are also good alternatives to natural shelter, but providing natural spaces where the owls can feel safe during the day is the best way to encourage them to roost nearby.
  • Nesting Sites: Hollow trees are most owls’ preferred nesting sites. Smaller owl species that are more likely to be common in yards and gardens may also use large nest boxes that are positioned 10-20 feet above the ground on a large tree. Barn owls may also use abandoned buildings for nesting, and leaving a barn or shed open for the birds to access can give them a great place to raise a brood of owlets. Nest boxes for owls should be put up by January or February since these birds nest much earlier than other backyard species. The boxes should be monitored to be kept free from wasps, squirrels, rodents, raccoons, or other birds or guests that may discourage nesting owls.

Creating an Owl-Friendly Environment

If your yard is owl-friendly but you still have trouble attracting these nighttime raptors, there are additional steps that can help make the yard even more appealing.

  • Leave large, bare branches and dead trees intact as much as possible to provide perches and roosting spots for hunting owls.
  • Create a rustic, natural section of backyard habitat with little pruning or maintenance where owls can feel more comfortable, especially for nesting or roosting.
  • Avoid extensive exterior lighting such as illuminated water features, floodlights, or spotlights, even with motion sensors. Owls hunt more effectively in darkness and will not visit well-lit yards.
  • Keep pets indoors after twilight and during nighttime hours. This will keep pets safe from hunting owls and keep pets from scaring away the mice and other rodents that owls will hunt.
  • Take steps to prevent bird window collisions on large windows that might be a danger to hunting owls.

While these tips can help you attract owls, it is just as important to avoid some behaviors that can harm these birds.

  • Do not release cage mice or other small animals with the intention of providing supplemental food for owls, and do not buy dead mice or offer other meat to tempt owls. These types of pets will not survive outdoors, and owls must hunt live prey to meet their nutritional and behavioral needs.
  • Avoid frequent use of recorded owl calls that can agitate the birds and distract them from the hunting or nesting activities they need to survive. Too many calls may also simulate excess predators in the area, which can deter other birds from visiting.
  • Remove all types of netting from your yard at night, including soccer or hockey nets and the netting from basketball hoops. Flying owls can get tangled in these nets, causing distress, injuries, and even death. Seasonal decorations, such as outdoor decorative cobwebs, are another threat that should be removed to protect owls.

With patience and careful planning, it is possible to attract owls to enjoy up close in your backyard.

Bird feeders come in a wide range of sizes, styles, and designs, but the new feeder you choose isn’t always one that will be most attractive to birds in your yard. Knowing how to attract birds to a feeder will help them transition from one feeder to another so you can add to your backyard buffet in whatever style you choose.

Getting New Feeders

As any backyard birder knows, a single bird feeder is rarely adequate once you get hooked on feeding the birds. Whether you are choosing a larger feeder to accommodate more birds, getting different types of feeders for different types of seed, or just adding more feeders for a growing flock, it is important to choose a style that will be attractive to birds. Characteristics to consider include:

  • Visibility so birds will notice the new feeder and see the available seed
  • Appropriate feeding ports for seed type and desired bird species
  • Multiple perches or platforms to accommodate many birds comfortably
  • Feeder capacity and refill frequency expectations
  • Pest-resistant features, such as built-in baffles or no-chew construction
  • Suitability to the climate to keep seed dry or free of snow and ice if needed
  • Durability and ease of maintenance and cleaning to keep the feeder in top shape

Feeders also come in a wide range of decorative styles, from natural designs to miniature buildings to abstract artistic shapes. Regardless of the type of feeder you choose, it can take time for birds to become accustomed to it and feed willingly.

How to Get Birds to Feed From a New Feeder

In some yards and gardens, it may take birds only a few minutes to begin using a new bird feeder, while in others it may take days or weeks before they are comfortable with a new design. To get birds to use a new bird feeder:

  • Place the new feeder in the same general area as old feeders. If the feeder needs to be located elsewhere, move it away from the old feeding station gradually, so birds know to follow it.
  • Position the feeder in an attractive, safe location, preferably near a brush pile, hedge, or another type of shelter so birds can feel secure when visiting.
  • Add a nearby bird bath to help birds notice and visit a new feeder, but do not position the bath so close that it will become dirty and clogged with seed debris. A bath with moving water, such as a bird bath fountain, wiggler, or dripper, will be most effective at catching birds’ attention.
  • Fill a new feeder with the most popular type of birdseed you offer, even if it will eventually be used for another type of seed or food. Black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, and Nyjer seed are the most popular and will attract birds more quickly than mixed seeds. Gradually mix in the desired seed to switch the feeder’s composition as the birds get used to it.
  • Spread some seed on the top of the feeder, on a nearby platform, or on the ground near the feeder to draw more attention to the location as a new and valuable feeding spot.
  • Temporarily remove other feeders offering similar seed to limit the choices birds have of where to feed. As they become accustomed to the new feeder, other feeders can be returned to duty and birds will use them all.
  • Accessorize the new feeder appropriately with a feeding platform to attract more birds or a squirrel baffle to deter pests and make the feeder more attractive to birds.

If Birds Still Aren’t Using the Feeder

If you don’t see birds at the new feeder after several days, take careful note of the seed levels to determine if they’re visiting the feeder and you’re simply missing their snacks. If the seed is not being eaten, observe your other feeders; it is possible the birds have migrated or are generally visiting the yard less, and therefore it will take them longer to get used to a new feeder.

Also, check the seed quality you are offering in a new feeder. If the seed has not been eaten after several days, it may have become moldy or attracted insects and is thus less suitable for the birds. Keep the feeder filled with fresh seed for the best results in attracting birds. At the same time, double check the type of seed offered against the size of the feeding ports to be sure the birds can get to the seed without difficulty.

Attracting Birds to Birdhouses

Just because a bird species has been recorded as using birdhouses does not mean they will move in as soon as a house is available. Birders who make their property more attractive to the birds will be more likely to attract nesting birds, and that means meeting the birds’ survival necessities.

  • Food: A variety of food sources, including bird feeders as well as natural foods, will ensure that nesting birds have plenty to feed their chicks. Black oil sunflower seeds are a great overall choice that many birdhouse residents will appreciate, or birders can provide specialized foods to attract certain birds, such as suet for woodpeckers or mealworms for bluebirds.
  • Water: All birds need fresh water for drinking and bathing, and a clean water source can make a yard even more attractive for nesting birds. Basic bird baths are fine, or birders can use bird bath fountains not only for water, but also for the splashing sounds and light-catching sparkles that will attract even more birds.
  • Shelter: Thicket-like shelter that includes evergreen trees and a variety of native plants will be most attractive to nesting birds. They will use twigs, plant down, mosses, and bits of leaves for nesting material, and will hide in brush piles and bird-friendly shrubs to stay safe from predators and poor weather.
  • Bird-Friendly Landscaping: The best yards will incorporate bird-friendly landscaping that includes not only native plants, but also naturalized areas for birds to feel comfortable. Avoiding too much pesticide or other chemical use is essential to protect birds and allow them to feast on nutritious insects, as well as ensure there is spider silk available for nest-building.

While it is essential to attract more birds so potential residents will notice the birdhouse, it is important to remember that nesting birds require privacy to feel secure while raising their families. Once a yard is attractive to birds, the birdhouse or nest box should be placed in a private area of the yard away from the busiest concentrations of feathered visitors.

Choose the Best Birdhouse

Even a bird-friendly yard with a birdhouse won’t attract nesting birds if it isn’t the right type of house. Different birds prefer different house sizes and styles, and there are certain considerations birders should make when getting started with birdhouses to be sure they have selected the right house for their birds.

  • Choose a house with the right entrance hole size for the desired birdhouse residents. A too-large hole will invite more aggressive birds to take over, while a too-small hole will keep desired birds from using the house.
  • Be sure the house is the right overall size, including interior floor space and height. A larger house won’t provide enough insulation to keep baby birds warm, but they can smother in a house that is too small.
  • Adjust the house as needed to be safe, including proper ventilation and drainage holes. Do not use a birdhouse that does not have the necessary safety features, even if it is the proper size for nesting birds.
  • Take steps to protect birdhouses from predators, including raccoons, mice, and snakes. Baffles can keep predators from getting to the house, and removing house entrance perches can ensure predators don’t get a foothold to get into the house.

Would you like to build a brand that reaches millions of people?

Whether your brand is about you, your company, or both, you can draw the attention of millions of people. Depending on how you’ve positioned your brand, you can have a deep impact on society, help a ton of people and earn a fortune.

However, I’m often surprised by the vast majority of companies that focus on establishing their brands before finding their strategy. These people set up their social media channels, websites, books, photos and everything else, but they fail to pull in a dollar, while losing thousands in the process.

This behavior is synonymous to asking for taste without supplying the salt. If you want customers, you need to concoct a flavor that builds trust in the marketplace, while simultaneously giving your prospects something to satiate their appetites. Your marketing message is the salt that adds flavor to your branding efforts.

The better your marketing message is, the hungrier people will be for your products and services. Even as you add flavor to your brand, you’ll still need to attract those who are salivating for your services. You also need to pay attention to those who don’t know that they’ll be hungry in the future. Therefore, your brand is always supplying a feast, regardless of who’s ready to eat.

Whether people know you exist or not, you need to have the right approach when creating a branding strategy. If your goal is to reach the masses with your products and services, here are the seven ways to attract millions of people to your brand:

Substance is basically content that appeals to your audience. Your website must inform, inspire, and engage. If people don’t find what they want in a website, they leave immediately. There are many books on the subject of copywriting: Joe Sugarman, Robert Bly, David Oglivy, and Victor Schwab have all written fascinating books that could change the entire course of your brand. By cultivating the skill of writing copy, you’ll have the ability to reach millions of people. Either way, writing excellent copy allows you to strategically fashion your words to optimize your reach.

Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.

4. Implant visual aids.

Have you ever seen websites without photos or videos? Webpages with videos and photos stand out far more than those that don’t. It also allows your reader to focus their attention on your brand by capturing their eyes. Since most people have photographic memories, the right visual aids dramatically enhance your brand.

Your websites and social media should be tattooed with visual aids of yourself, events, products, and other goods. Photos and videos add proof of what you’re doing in your business. In many industries, many people aren’t able to secure opportunities simply because they don’t have visual aids to build trust. Who’s going to believe you without any visual evidence?

5. Be memorable.

What do you want to be remembered for? If you want to have a favorable reputation in the marketplace, you have to create your own reputation. You also want to make sure your name is easy to spell and pronounce. It’s perfectly fine to cherish your name, but if it’s difficult to spell or pronounce to your client, you won’t be remembered.

The biggest names and easiest names have two syllables: Gates, Branson, Buffet, Trump, Clinton, Oprah, etc. Then there are easy business names: Apple, Twitter, Facebook, Wal-Mart. Also, if your name is very common, like John Smith, you might want to have a nickname or add a middle initial. Your name is a big part of business and you want to be searchable for your audience.

Your reputation is your best advertisement.

6. Write a book.

When people like you, they’ll always buy your book. In my business, my book allows me to get me through amazing doors of opportunity. My chances also increase dramatically when people read my book. Once they discover the great ideas that I share, I automatically have a new life-long fan. Plus, you never know who could be reading your book!

After selling thousands of books, I can tell you that publishing a book is a potent credential. In some cases, it can be comparable to an MBA or Ph.D. Either way, your book will expose you to other opportunities, which can lead you to bigger audiences to serve. 7. Create your back story.

Since the beginning of human civilization, we’ve learned our greatest lessons through the art of story-telling. A back story is a narrative that gives your audience enough information about you to make an informed decision. Back stories give your audience the transparency to know who you are and what you represent. It also gives your brand an emotional tone and deeper meaning to your marketing message.

Your back story should be congruent and favorable to everything you’ve marketed about. This includes biographies, testimonials, and credentials. Oftentimes, you’ll see people with back stories that are either confusing, contradicting, or boring. The brands with the best back story will always set you up for your front-story, which is the moment you deliver your product or service.

Establishing your brand is about planting as many seeds as you can with your marketing. Before you take any of these suggestions, make sure you have a plan for execution. If you invest in a first-class brand without a strategy, it’s the same as having a restaurant without chefs. However, once you find a branding strategy and add taste to your menu, everyone will be able to have a feast!

Why are hummingbird feeders red?

Perhaps you’ve noticed that hummingbird feeders are covered in red plastic. Some people put red food coloring in the nectar they feed hummingbirds. You may wonder, though, is it necessary? Are hummingbirds really attracted to the color red more so than other colors? Just why are hummingbird feeders red?

After looking at all the research and experiments one conclusion is apparent:

Hummingbird feeders are red because the people who buy hummingbird feeders think that they need to be red!

Experiments show that hummingbird feeders can be any color–the hummingbirds don’t show preference for one color feeder over another. Read on for more information on hummingbird color perception, flower color and sugar content, and some interesting experiments using different-colored hummingbird feeders.

Hummingbird eyesight–does red attract hummingbirds?

Hummingbird vision is more sensitive to the warmer red, orange, yellow colors than the cooler blue colors. However, even though red and orange flowers appear more vibrant to hummingbirds, they will also feed from any color flower that has enough sugar content in the nectar.

Hummingbirds see the same colors as we do, plus some more in the near ultra-violet range. But they are more sensitive to the warm reddish colors. Such colors stand out to them, making colorful flowers easier to see against the green leaves.

But just because they can see and detect flowers better than leaves, does not mean that any particular color attracts them more than another.

Hummingbirds feeding on red flowers

The flowers that hummingbirds love the most have a 19-21% sugar level. These tend to be flowers colored red, orange, and yellow. Thus, the 20% sugar level recommended for homemade hummingbird nectar (1 part white table sugar to 4 parts water).

Flowers colored white, blue, violet tend to have a lesser sugar concentration of 5-18% and are less desirable to the hummingbirds.

Nevertheless, hummingbirds do not seem to visit red flowers first compared to other bright colored flowers. Why?

Even different flowers on the same plant can have different amounts of sugar. So hummingbirds rely more on location than on color for finding and returning to the sweetest flowers.

What is the best color for a hummingbird feeder?

In the 1990’s the Wild Bird Store, in cooperation with Aspects, Inc., a bird feeder manufacturer, experimented with many different colored feeders (source). The result? Hummingbirds showed no preference to any color of hummingbird feeder–they visited all feeders equally.

This was the same conclusion reached by other researchers. An article in the journal Animal Behavior (source) showed that flower color (on artificial feeders) was not important for hummingbirds for finding the sweetest nectar. Rather, once they found a sweet feeder, they came back to that location to drink, regardless of color.

Why are hummingbird feeders red?

It turns out, though, that the buying public thinks that hummingbird feeders need to be red. Aspects (as reported above) came out with a limited number of hummingbird feeders in several various colors. But buyers wanted red colored feeders and didn’t readily buy the alternate colors.

Hummingbirds will investigate any bright red, orange, or yellow colored objects to see if it might be a flower or a hummingbird feeder. But most hummingbird feeders are red, because that is how they are made by the manufacturers.

So it’s human bias that dictates that hummingbird feeders have to be red. We “know” that hummingbirds prefer red, even though experiments prove that statement is not true.

Do hummingbirds need red feeders?

Nope. Hummingbirds do not need feeders that are red. Hummingbirds taste flowers and taste feeder nectar. They find the nectar (flower or artificial feeder) with a sugar ratio near 20%. Then they keep coming back.

Go ahead and buy or make a hummingbird feeder that’s a different color, if you want. Any bright color will do. The hummingbirds will still come to drink and feed if the sugar concentration is from 15-25%.

However, you can attract the attention of hummingbirds to your feeder by hanging up red ribbons (or other bright colored) objects. You can plant flowers or hang bright blooming flowers in hanging baskets, up higher where hummingbirds can see them at a distance. These bright objects and flowers will attract hummingbirds to come over and investigate. Then they’ll drink from your hummingbird feeder–no matter the color.

As the space is becoming extremely crowded, it is evident that it is now much harder to attract players to your games, especially for indie developers. Unless you are a AAA title with a loyal player base, you are going to struggle to gain initial traction and exposure of your game.

However, there are t h ings you can do in order to attract the player base you desire. Although, this shouldn’t be taken lightly, attracting players is a job within itself.

Below are some suggestions to help you build a strong framework for your player acquisition strategy.

First things first, you need to create exposure. Let gamers know that your game exists.

In order to do this, you NEED to do the following:

Identify Target Audience — First, you need to identify your ideal gamer. Although this may seem obvious, it is something that is more often than not missed. It is crucial that you understand who your target audience is. Start by generating an ideal buyer persona, to help you understand your target audiences ideal demographic. By understanding your target audience, you can best structure your marketing and advertising efforts to target those individuals.

Marketing Creativity — Just as important in understanding who your target audience is, it is crucial to have some creativity to your marketing campaigns. In such a crowded space, it is imperative that your marketing efforts stand out from the crowd.   • Distribution — Publishers specialise in getting your game on multiple game stores or marketplaces around the globe.
  • Resources — Most publishers will offer resources to help with the development, launch or marketing of the game, depending on the games needs.
  • Player Attraction — Publishers specialise in player attraction, using multiple techniques. Publishers will take the tedious trial and error away from the developers. This can include things like getting the game listed on Humble Bundle or using third-party attraction software.

Third Party Solutions
There are many third party software and solutions on the market that help and solely focus on player attraction. However, be wary, not every solution will provide the results you expect.
