How to be a beautiful black teenage girl

For black girls and young women of color, it can seem like the deck is perennially stacked against them. A recent study by Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality quantified what many of us have intimately experienced: that adults view black girls under 14 as less innocent and more adult than white children of the same age. The implications of this innocence erasure are seen in other data: In school, black girls are punished more harshly while youth of color are more likely to be shuttled into the harsh juvenile detention system .

This makes today, the International Day of the Girl , that much more important. An annual call-to-action, Day of the Girl is a time to reflect on how we view girls and their potential and take the right actions to create a more equitable world for them.

As someone who has spent the past 10 years thinking about ways to better empower young black girls, I’ve curated seven nonprofits that I believe are prioritizing the needs and challenges of black girls in health, education, empowerment, and the arts. With a mix of new and established, grassroots and national, these charities are a fit for a variety of giving preferences.

Giving to these nonprofits doesn’t have to be difficult, in fact, in 2018 I joined ALMA , a modern donation platform created to empower everyday donors like us to help to amplify the great work nonprofits do for the community, and never looked back. Knowing that little-by-little can become a lot, you can have a big impact on any of these organizations with a donation as small as $10.

  1. Black Girls Smile : This New York and Atlanta-based charity focuses on increasing mental health literacy, coping skills and self-care methods for young black girls. Through programs for youth and their teachers/caretakers, Black Girls Smile uses evidence-based strategies to ensure young girls have the ability to cope with life’s stressors. Give .
  2. Brown Girls Do Ballet/Gymnastics : This philanthropic organization grew from a photography project by the mother of a three-year-old. While scouting classes for her daughter, she was stunned by the lack of diversity in ballet studios and decided to highlight ballerinas of color—Hispanic, Asian, East Indian, Native American and African—to draw attention to the issue. Now Brown Girls Do, which is the umbrella organization for Brown Girls Do Ballet and Brown Girls Do Gymnastics, aims to increase participation in those activities for brown girls with scholarships, mentor programs and other resources. 3. Girls for Gender Equity : Working locally in New York City and nationally, Girls for Gender Equity brings attention to the unique challenges faced by girls and gender-nonconforming youth of color. Through community-led research, organizing and physical fitness, GGE fulfills its mission to “remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives.” Support.
  4. Girls on the Run : This Charlotte, N.C.-based nonprofit uses a running-based curriculum to encourage girls in grades 3-8 to be joyful, healthy and confident. Though not exclusively for black girls, Girls on the Run prioritizes access and inclusion by eliminating barriers to participation and training coaches to create inclusive environments. Gift .
  5. Girls Embracing Mothers : Based in Dallas, this unique nonprofit works with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to help incarcerated mothers nurture a relationship with their daughters and break the cycle of imprisonment for girls. Mothers are a fast-growing prison population who might rarely or never be able to interact with their children as jurisdictions eliminate face-to-face visitation, jack up prices on phone calls or both. Girls with mothers in prison are the most at-risk for incarceration themselves and GEM’s programming helps them create a positive vision and purpose for their lives. Contribute .
  6. Uniquely You Summit : This annual empowerment conference in Philadelphia offers a much-needed forum for discussion and problem-solving on the unique challenges of black girls 11-18 years old. With an aim to eliminate feelings of isolation, Uniquely You Summit gives voice and hope to the distractions that can hijack a girl’s formative years: preoccupation with their skin complexion, hair texture, body type and sexuality; navigating depression, emotional stress and trauma. Ante Up .
  7. Black Girls Code : The roots of this nonprofit were formed when founder Kimberly Bryant experienced cultural isolation as a black girl studying computer science. Now Black Girls Code is a national organization that provides opportunities for girls of color to learn valuable technology and computer programming skills in the hopes that they’ll pursue a career in STEM. Confession: I am a white man who thinks that black women are extremely attractive. Guilty as charged.

Some of my best female friends are black (I hope you read this Jackie!) and the sad truth is that many of them find flaws in their true beauty.

For guys like me, this is completely insane! For them on the other hand, this is their everyday struggle.

I’m often stunned by this. I have met insanely beautiful black women who easily turn every man’s head but who thought of themselves as unattractive and sometimes even as ugly.

I really don’t understand it.

Maybe it’s a mixture of social conditioning from the old days (which is my biggest suspicion) or maybe it’s the often negative portrayal of black beauty in the media, (another of my suspicions.)

And while it is definitely important to find the source of why so many attractive black women find themselves unattractive, I want to do something else with this article.

I want to help any of the beautiful black women that read this site to overcome the negative feelings they may have towards themselves. I want to help them to look in the mirror, to smile and to say “I am a attractive woman.”

But before I get my first hate comment because I am a white guy who is talking about the beauty of black women I want to make one thing very clear. None of the following aspects are meant in a racist way. They are meant in an appreciative way, and I hope you are open-minded enough to understand them in the way they are meant.

What Makes Black Women Physically Attractive.

Even though a lot of black women don’t believe in their own attractiveness, they are blessed with some physical features that can drive men crazy.

Ladies, you are definitely not inferior to any other race when it comes to your ability to cast a spell over men. There are a couple of things about you that are irresistible.

Your natural curly hair.

I am originally from Germany, and where I come from, there are not many black women. That was the main reason why I was so shocked when I saw a black girl at my university in London with two different hairstyles on two separate days.

Monday she had long and straight hair and Tuesday her hair was short and curly. I was confused. When she then told me that many black girls wear weaves, I was even more confused. Call me naïve, but I really didn’t know what that was lol.

And to be honest, I didn’t understand it. I then told her that she doesn’t need a wig because her natural curly hair looks really beautiful.

Well, after she explained to me that a weave and a wig are two totally different things, she said that I was the first person who ever told her that her natural hair was beautiful.

I’m still a bit shocked by that.

Your sensual lips.

Even though I am a white guy, I have very big lips. If you don’t, believe me, you can ask my ex-girlfriend. She told me that she was scared of them when I tried to kiss her for the very first time.

As a man with big lips, I don’t want to kiss a girl who has no lips at all. Sorry, but it’s true. When I kissed a black woman for the very first time I was in heaven. Oh man, that kiss was passionate, and her lips were so soft. It was an incredible experience.

That was the day when I fell in love with the lips of black women.

Your feminine curves.

Most black women have amazing bodies, and they shouldn’t be ashamed of them. I actually met one black woman who constantly thought about ways that she could hide her curves to appear thinner. She only shopped for pants that didn’t emphasize her hips, even though emphasizing her hips would have been the smarter choice in my opinion.

It is not a secret that men are attracted to women with female curves. Being attracted to female curves is in our DNA and there is nothing we can do about it.

So why on earth would you want to hide the curves that make you even more attractive? Sorry, but it doesn’t make any sense.

Your dark skin.

As the naïve German guy who has been raised in a country without the racial issues that you can find in the United States or in other parts of the world, I always thought that black women were proud of their dark skin.

I really thought that until I met one African American girl who told me about her own psychological issues. She then showed me the following movie:

I was shocked. I was really, really shocked.

I couldn’t believe that so many dark-skinned girls had such deep-rooted issues because of the color of their skin. I hope that it helps when I tell you that your dark skin is beautiful and that there are a lot of men who feel the same way.

What Makes Black Women Emotionally Attractive.

Now I talked about the physical qualities that make black women so irresistible, but as we all know, a woman consists of more than her body. There is a soul, and a heart underneath that beautiful body and this soul and heart should also be appreciated.

When I think about the black girls who I am proud to call my friends and the black girls I dated, I can spontaneously think of three characteristics that fascinated me about them.

I know that some of the characteristics that I am going to mention now are seen as weaknesses or as negatively-biased stereotypes, but that’s just how society thinks. I think that they are very attractive.

Their hearty laugh.

There are a lot of YouTube videos that make fun of how black women laugh because it apparently is loud and uncontrolled to some people. I even heard some people saying that laughing this way is uncivilized and rude.

Are you serious?

Yes, the way many black women laugh is different than the way white girls laugh, but I don’t see this in a negative way. They laugh wholeheartedly and are not ashamed to show their emotions, even if some people might consider this as weird.

I remember one date with a black girl where I made a joke, and she laughed for almost five minutes straight. The table next to us was staring as if we were two aliens from Mars, but she had the time of her life and didn’t care what anyone thought.

The confidence and the joy that her laugh expressed made her even more attractive to me.

Their straightforward attitude.

As a man who has traveled around the world I know how different people behave and talk depending on the culture they have been raised in. While a lot of Asian girls are quite shy and reserved, I can’t deny that a lot of black women act the opposite way.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but most black girls I know are very straightforward, don’t beat around the bush and tell you exactly what they think. While this can be a bit intimidating when you are not used to it, it can also be quite liberating to date a woman who is so honest and direct.

Their natural expression of who they are.

While all the different aspects that I shared with you in this article contribute to the attractiveness of black women, there is one characteristic that defines whether or not a black woman I talk to is attractive to me.

The one characteristic that a black woman absolutely has to have to be called an attractive woman in my book is the ability to be at peace with the natural expression of who she is.

No matter if it is your laugh, your direct attitude or your feminine curves…don’t hide who you are.

There are already too many black women who allow their insecurities and the racist thoughts of others to suppress their natural expression of who they are.

Don’t be one of them. Be proud of who you are. You are beautiful.

Belong to something

African women love men who belong to something, or men who are concerned with the needs of other people in the society. You should try and be actively involved in church work, community service or any organizational activities, and you’ll be surprised to see how African girls are easily attracted to men who at least belong to something. In addition, this will also make them view you as a man who actually cares about others; this also makes you a perfect candidate for a husband.

Make her girl friends jealous

While this might not be acceptable in the African culture, it’s definitely more effective for anyone who intends to attract an African woman. Generally, women are known for being ‘their own worst enemies’, if I may quote. And that makes them even more vulnerable to men who would not hesitate to take advantage of such situations. All you have to do is simple: just be nice to your girl and her friends, and let her think that her girlfriends are jealous of her, and that they are willing to have you if ever given the opportunity.

How to be a beautiful black teenage girl

When a boy sends beautiful words to a young girl, they should be original and shouldn’t sound like a worn-out compliment that she has heard a hundred times.

Compliments shouldn’t only refer to the appearance but also to all of what makes her such as it is – character, personality, and sense of humour. Who wouldn’t love to get praise for their fashion style, talent or athletic success?

You can tell her that she is the best, the most beautiful, the prettiest woman you have ever met… But there is one sentence worth like all the compliments of the world together. All compliments that you send to the woman can help you to win it, but, according to a British study, the sentence “You don’t look like you have those years” is what every woman wants to hear.

Girls like it when their boyfriend says that they are fun because it means that they are having a good time with her. As soon as you tell her that she has a sense of humour, that will be bound to another compliment, and that is `You are smart because funny people are really intelligent.

You can always positively comment on her style and say that you like how she dresses or what music she listens to. Of course, if you want to conquer a girl totally then you will notice on her some details, such as sweet earrings on the ear or cool nail polish.

Everyone is interested in something, but when you find out which is her principal avocation, in this area, you have to commend her. If it is a sport, then commend her achievements in sport, and if she is good at work, then say that this what she does and the way it does fascinates you.

If she’s good at drawing, singing, dancing or acting do not hesitate to tell her that you, is in some way, admire her and appreciate what she does … Although maybe it works confidently and you think that’s an excessive compliment, it is not so, because trust me – everyone likes to hear the compliment which he deserved. Maybe her dance/voice/acting talent/drawings are praised by many people; she will prefer to hear that from you, especially if she really likes you.

This may not be a special talent or something on which she had to do, but why not to mention that colour of her voice drives you crazy? Of course, you will not tell her with these words, but feel free to let her know that her voice is one of your favorite sounds. Besides that, a lot can be found about personality on the basis of the voice, but also about the mood.

As this is something which boys rarely notice, this is a great compliment because girls really care about their hair, and boys usually only notice a drastic change, for example, if someone with long hair significantly cut her hair or if completely change her hair color. Compliment regarding the girl hairstyle will mean a lot to her because it will show how much attention you pay to her.

She saw a group of hooligans in the street who mistreat the powerless and decided to get involved and chase away them. Wow, she’s brave and righteous – let her know that you do not miss a thing. Maybe she is just affordable, maybe kind, she perhaps gives the best pieces of advice; in any case, do not be afraid to point out the qualities that you like the most about her.
