Video Editor

Video editing is the most crucial part in video blogging, all footages that you have recorded needs to be edited with video editing software like Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas.

Camera

This is one of the important pieces of equipment that you need to be carrying when you make a vlog. If you don’t have a camera with you then you won’t have footages to be edited, to begin with.

Lighting

Not entirely necessary, but strongly recommended especially if you’re filming anything inside your house. A simple overhead lamp will usually suffice.

Micophone

It is important to make your videos understandable, so getting yourself a nice microphone attached to your camera will surely make everything better. A YouTuber once said that “it doesn’t really matter if you’re video quality is bad, as long as you have good audio quality.”

1. Define your brand.
As a food vlogger, you’ll face steep and frequent competition, but one way to stand out from that online cooking crowd is to define your brand before you even post your first video. “Make sure that you know what makes you unique to stand out amongst the other food vloggers,” Will advises. “What I mean is, truly know who you are, what you think is funny, and your favorite meals that you like to cook or to bake. Once you know those things, you’ll be able to brand your channel and go after a targeted audience.”

2. Get the right equipment.
What you use when you start will be largely dependent on your goals and your budget. Vlogger Whitney Bond, whose YouTube channel attracts a large daily audience, still shoots her videos on her iPhone, which is stabilized on a tripod she got secondhand. “Don’t think that you need thousands of dollars of equipment to get started,” Bond says. “This is a common excuse I hear for why people haven’t started their vlog and it’s just not necessary.” Vlogger Katie Quinn, of The Q Katie YouTube Channel, agrees that you can start by making videos on your smartphone—but, she adds, “once you have your videos in a nice groove, [better equipment] will help in to create high-quality, visually appealing content.” Quinn shoots using a Sony A7Sii, and edits her videos using Adobe Premiere Pro, while Will recommends a Sony A6500 or Cannon 5D camera to start.

3. Befriend fellow food vloggers.
It may seem counterintuitive to make nice with the competition, but these vloggers insist building relationships with other vloggers can mean the difference between success and failure in this field. “Not only are other creators the only people who can really relate to the challenges you experience in this wacky YouTube world—and therefore keep you sane—but doing collaboration videos with them can expose you to a new audience and therefore can be a little viewership boost,” Quinn says.

4. Learn as many recipes as possible.
While you may have developed your brand with a certain audience in mind, remember, “you will still have all types of fans—from vegans to steak lovers—so knowing many different type of recipes will expand your repertoire and your credibility as a food vlogger,” points out Will. “That said, you should also know your specialties: I can cook a mean Pad Thai but my specialty is Southern and Caribbean food.”

5. Be consistent.
When you begin uploading your videos and sharing content, don’t do so willy-nilly, Quinn encourages. “Make a commitment to creating content, and set a schedule for yourself,” she says. “Make sure it’s a sustainable goal. Then pick a day and time [to post] and stick to it, because consistency is really important to building that base audience.”

6. Connect with sponsors.
Before approaching sponsors, asking for money—in the form of ads, partnerships, or sponsorships—consider “becoming a fan of brands’ products, doing your research, and showing them a little love,” Bond suggests. “Maybe it’s a shout-out in one of your videos to your favorite hot sauce, or tagging your favorite tortilla brand on Twitter when you share a taco recipe. Either way, building that relationship before you reach out directly will go a long way with brands. And you never know—after showing them some love on social media, they might just be the ones to reach out to you first.”

To be a good and successful one, it would take someone who is good at spontaneity in front of the lens and has the ability to keep the audience engaged with how they talk or narrate something. It is also not necessary to always put your face in front of the camera, considering there are vloggers out there who only have their voice running in the background.

Apart from a good camera and voice presence, what you also need is to be good with making videos and doing research. With so much competition cropping up everyday, you would really need to differentiate yourself in terms of what you put out there.

Your topics may range from talking about comic books and tv shows to everyday things such as cooking and making delectable delicacies.

What It Takes

The first thing you would need for vlogging is a camera that captures high-resolution videos. You would also be needing other camera equipment such as a tripod and a good lapel mic.

Secondly, you would need to have a computer system and the requisite software to help you edit these videos. Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Audition are a good place to go to if you want high quality output. There are also free video makers out there, and if you are budget constrained, they can help you build your base before you move on to these paid applications.

Investing and Earning

A basic handycam will cost you upwards of INR 30,000 while adding the additional equipment may cost an addition INR 10,000-INR 20,000. A decent computer system which will be your workstation may cost about INR 70,000.

Buying the video software from Adobe will cost you INR 1,400 per month for each of the three apps but if you take the entire suite of products that includes several other apps, it would come to about INR 3,500 a month.

Do you need to spend on marketing? Perhaps. Since your earnings will depend on the number of people who see your videos, spending about INR 3000-INR 5000 on ads initially is not such a bad idea.

In terms of earnings, your primary source of earning would be from in-video advertisements. YouTube is still your best bet for this as they start paying you on a per thousand views basis after you have reached a certain threshold. On average, a channel can earn $3-$5 per thousand video views. This is based on the fact that not everyone viewing the video will see the advertisement for more than 30 seconds – the metric to consider one ad view.

If and after you are large enough in terms of subscriber base, you can also do sponsored videos by approaching brands as well as open an account on a service like Patreon, where your loyal viewers can contribute to keep you going full-time.

But if you want to have a realistic flow, a video concept and some good clips to use, there should probably be some research and planning done first.

Don’t be alarmed, the process is actually really easy and will make your life easier in the long run.

Creating a checklist of things that need to be done is great for you to use in the beginning. As time goes on you will become more familiar with the process, all of these things will become second nature.

Pre Production

You’ve decided you want to know how to make a vlog, the excitement levels are through the roof and so is the motivation. How to make a vlog 101, where do you even start? Step 1: Do not panic. No seriously, it can get quite overwhelming at the start. Take note, things will get easier from here.

Film your vlog in clips, bit by bit. Vloggers rarely record a 20 minute video straight through without taking a break. If you’re unsure of what to do or if you make a mistake, do not fret, you can film that part again and just edit it in .

Once you have everything ready to go, it’s time to publish. As soon as that’s done, you can begin to promote your vlog (more on that later!). There are a lot of vlogs out there, in order to stand out in a crowded place you need to first get yourself on the same level of everyone else and then do that little bit more.

If you’re positive, enthusiastic and engaging, people will naturally be drawn to your vlogs. Like most things, practice makes perfect. You have time to improve and so does your channel.
