How to Become a Forklift Driver, Even If You Lack Real World Experience

You can technically become a forklift driver without any real world experience, but doing so can be challenging. Businesses typically want experienced forklift drivers, as these operators know the ins and outs of using a lift.

There may be times when companies will offer training to those who want to become forklift drivers. For instance, if a business identifies a quality candidate and believes he or she can thrive as a forklift driver, the company may offer training. This can help the company recruit talented professionals and ensures a candidate can quickly learn how to correctly drive a forklift.

Can I really operate a forklift after only completing this online course?

Yes. To apply for a job as a forklift operator, this course fulfills all requirements necessary. Once you have received your certificate, you will give it to your current or future employer and they will then administer the hands on training and sign your certificate as mandated by OSHA.

What are the requirements?

In order to start the process to become a forklift operator, you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen

The requirements to complete certification include:

  • Completing a formal instructional & educational training class that meets OSHA 1910.178 standards
  • Completing a formal evaluation (online or in a classroom)
  • Presenting the written records of certification to a future or current employer for sign-off & approval

This course satisfies all of the requirements mandated through the Occupational Safety Health Administration, and provides the written documentation needed to provide to an employer.

Do all forklift operators need to be certified? Why?

Yes, it is the law. The Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA 1910.178 (i)(6)) requires all forklift operators be certified before operating a lift truck or warehouse product.

The reason this is mandatory is to help reduce the number of injuries due to unsafe operation of equipment in the workplace.

Is the training offered in spanish?

Yes, there is an option to watch the interactive training videos in Spanish.

Have you ever thought about driving for a living? Or working in haulage, or logistics industries?

If you have thought about working as a driver, but don’t have an HGV or PCV licence, don’t despair, there are plenty of excellent driving jobs and opportunities that don’t require expensive training , or pre-existing HGV licenses, and yet offer excellent pay and benefits. One of them is forklift driving.

Forklift Driving as a Career

Forklift operators are required in lots of industries, from logistics companies to manufacturer and industrial enterprises all across the UK. In fact, without that dedicated workforce of forklift drivers, materials handling would be much more difficult.

At the Transport Training Academy, we help hundreds of people become forklift drivers, by providing top quality training and certification programmes. To help you decide if forklift training is for you, check out this short guide to all the requirements.

Do you need a Forklift Driver License?

There is no such thing as a Forklift Driver Licence. Forklift drivers don’t have a formal licensing authority, unlike other types of drivers.

However, employers have a legal responsibility to ensure safety at work and most reputable employers regard forklift training as part of their responsibility to keep staff and equipment safe. As a result, the industry has worked with the government to develop training courses and certification schemes that mean that most companies require some form of certification for forklift drivers.

That means that to work as a forklift driver, you do have to undergo training.

In the UK, there are six accrediting organisations approved by the Health and Safety Executive:

  • CITB
  • Lantra Awards
  • Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT)
  • National Plant Operators Registration Scheme Ltd
  • Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) Ltd
  • Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR)

All training centres, like Transport Training Academy off courses to the standards of at least one of these approved accrediting organisations. Here at TTA , we issue certificates to ITSSAR standards.

Why do you need forklift driver training?

One simple reason is safety. On average, somebody is killed every 6 weeks in the UK by a forklift truck. Forklift trucks are specifically designed to carry heavy or unwieldy loads in confined spaces. As a result, their shape, weight distribution and size make them very different from almost any other vehicle you might drive.

Driving an empty forklift is difficult and different enough; add a load or a height loading requirement, and the operation becomes considerably challenging. Loading and stacking shelves in a confined space, with an unusual vehicle, requires skills that can only be acquired through training and practice.

What does forklift driver training involve?

Training encompasses the following areas:

  • Safety codes of practice
  • Theory of driving
  • Safe operating procedures
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Loading/unloading of vehicles
  • Daily checks
  • Manoeuvring exercises
  • Health and safety at work
  • Weight assessment
  • Corrective driving
  • Driving on/off ramps
  • Load handling

One of the most common issues new forklift drivers have is tipping. There are built-in counterbalances for lift trucks, however, these only go so far in preventing a forklift from tipping over. Additionally an unloaded forklift is automatically unbalanced. Drivers need to know how to deal safely with any issue that comes their way.

How long does forklift training take?

If you are looking to work as a forklift driver, most employers will expect you to have formal training and certification. Employers expect the forklift drivers they hire to be ready to get to work immediately, with no need for in-house training.

If you are hoping for a career as a forklift operator, it is advisable to undergo training and certification before you start looking for work.

Training for lift truck certification with TTA is quick and straightforward. With our courses, it is possible to go from an inexperienced operator to a fully trained and certified lift truck driver in a matter of days. Our list of courses includes:-

Novice Training – 5 Days

This course for for new operators with no previous forklift experience, is a full, five-day course. This course culminates with a certification exam. Once passed the student is awarded with a forklift certificate from the Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR).

Experienced Operator – 3 Days

If you have more experience of operating a lift truck, but have never received any formal training or certification, TTA can support you with a more concentrated three-day course. This course will take advantage of your experience and combine it with the extra knowledge you need to pass the certification exam.

Refresher Course – 1 Day

The one-day refresher courses are designed for experienced drivers who have already been certified. At TTA we know that even the best drivers in the industry sometimes need to brush up on skills and knowledge. A refresher course allows you to keep your certification current, and prospective employers happy.

Maintaining your forklift certification

We recommend that our forklift drivers obtain documentation proving training and certification have been completed. We provide all the relevant documents and certificates as part of our package. It’s easy to get the required training, and the construction industry needs you.

Thinking of becoming a forklift driver? There’s good news and bad news. On average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these jobs were expected to grow by only 3 percent per year between 2014 and 2024. (The average growth rate for all occupations was projected to be 7 percent.) But there’s one industry that’s practically begging for these workers: construction.

According to Brian Turmail, senior executive director of public affairs for The Associated General Contractors of America, “Forty seven percent of firms that hire equipment operators tell us they are having a hard time finding enough qualified candidates to hire for that category of worker.”

Getting certified

You need to be certified to operate a forklift (and you must be at least 18 years old). The certification training requirements are similar from state to state, since the Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets the standards. However, Massachusetts and California have a few additional requirements beyond the federal rules.

There are two ways to get forklift certification training: directly from an employer or from an outside source such as a training center or vocational school. In either case, OSHA requires the instruction to be conducted by qualified trainers who have a recognized degree, certificate or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training, and experience have demonstrated the ability to train and evaluate forklift operators. The instruction must include both formal (lecture, video, online, etc.) training and hands-on training. And yes, there will be a test.

United Rentals’ United Academy offers a variety of training courses you can sign up for. Some employers also take advantage of United Academy to train new forklift operators. When operators receive outside training, OSHA requires the employer to confirm the person’s competency.

Note that there are different types of forklifts. You should be trained on the type you plan to operate. If you want to operate a rough terrain forklift, the training may be slightly more extensive.

If you are applying for a forklift position, you’ll have a leg up if you’re already certified.

What does the job pay?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the 2016 median pay for forklift drivers (classified as material moving operators) was $38,890 per year, or $16.29 per hour. While there are some regional variances, this will give you an idea of the type of income you’ll receive.

To make more money — and perhaps make yourself more marketable — you may want to consider becoming a heavy construction equipment operator. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median 2016 pay for these jobs was $45,040 per year, or $21.65 per hour. Of course, more training is required to become a heavy equipment operator. Typically, workers learn heavy equipment operation on the job, through an apprenticeship or by attending a vocational school.

We offer same day OSHA Forklift Certification Training at your location or at one of our training centers. Forklifts are used in many different types of businesses, from manufacturing plants and lumber yards, to distribution centers for big box retailers and online merchandising sites. Operators who complete our OSHA certified forklift course will be able to operate Class C Forklifts. OSHA certification protects against heavy fines and potential liability. When properly trained, operators will no longer guess about the best approach, balance and moving up load. To become even more employable many of our students schedule their forklift training immediately after passing their CDL road test.

Benefits of certified training include: less company liability, lower maintenance costs, reduced material damage, increased efficiency and fewer near-miss accidents (or more serious accidents).
