How to become a disney travel agent

Here’s how to become a Disney travel agent, with expert tips and pandemic advice.

If you love Disney, know an impressive amount of theme park trivia, and consider yourself an expert vacation planner, you might have what it takes to become a Disney travel agent. A dream job for some Disney fans, these travel agents spend their days talking about all things Disney and helping guests book unforgettable trips.

Sue Pisaturo, owner of Small World Vacations, a top Disney vacation travel agency, has watched the industry grow over the last 25 years, so we asked for her best tips on how to become a Disney travel agent. Here’s what you should know before embarking on a magical new career.

How to Become a Disney Travel Agent

There isn’t just one way to become a Disney travel agent, and the requirements and expectations vary depending on your goals, the agency’s standards, and your location. Some aspiring agents want to work part-time to plan trips for their friends and family, while others pursue this as a full-time career. Either way, most agents work remotely instead of reporting to a physical office. States have different laws impacting travel agents, and many work as independent contractors, so it’s important to educate yourself on the applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations to ensure that you and your agency are compliant.

There are learning programs, like the College of Disney Knowledge and modules on Disney Travel Agents, the help agents deepen their knowledge of Disney destinations, but Pisaturo says that the best preparation is first-hand experience. Go to the Disney theme parks, stay at the resorts, eat at the restaurants, go on a cruise with Disney Cruise Line or Adventures by Disney, and visit Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the offerings and experiences, so you can effectively advise future travelers.

Disney travel agents spend their days helping guests plan magical experiences, so they need to stay up-to-date on Disney news and trends. Needless to say, most Disney travel agents choose this career path because they love all things Disney, and they want to help other guests have those magical moments you can only find on a Disney vacation.

Finding the Right Agency

To be a successful Disney travel agent, you’ll want to find the right agency fit, and there are a few basic things to know before you get started. Disney travel agents provide a service to travelers by booking their trips, and Disney pays the agency a commission. The agency negotiates the commission split with agents, so you’ll receive a portion of the earnings. Some agencies expect agents to find their own clients (many agents utilize social media to market their services), while others provide leads directly to agents. Travel agencies vary in size and practice, so Pisaturo provided some helpful questions that people should ask their potential agencies.

Fees: Do they charge upfront fees, and if so, what are they? Find out about any other fees the agency charges agents, including any for training and education.

Contracts: Are there any mandatory sales goals or hours? Is there an independent contractor contract, and how long does it last?

Agency Support: How long have your agents been with the agency? (This can be a good indicator of satisfaction with the agency.) What support does the main office provide to agents? Does the agency provide leads, or are agents responsible for generating their own sales? Does the agency provide assistance with social media marketing, including information about Disney’s rules and restrictions? How often are agents paid commission, and what method does the agency use to pay them?

Agency Information: Is the agency an Earmarked Authorized Disney Vacation Planner, and if so, at what level? (The levels are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.) Does the agency belong to Universal’s U-Preferred program? Is the agency accredited by the Better Business Bureau? Does the agency belong to other professional associations? Has the agency been involved in any lawsuits with agents, guests, or vendors?

These are critical questions you’ll want to ask before starting with an agency. Of course, it’s always helpful to search the agencies you’re interested in online and check out their social media pages.

If you have made it this far, you are obviously thinking that becoming a Travel Agent that specializes in Disney Vacations is in your near future. But, how do you become a Travel Agent? We are here to help.

Option #1 – Find an existing Disney focused Travel agency that will hire you.

This is the easiest option by far, especially if you have never worked as a travel agent before, Disney Specialist or not. When searching, beware who you are talking to. Many agencies will interview you, hire you, and set you free with little to no training and no further support or leads. It is very, very rare that agents succeed in agencies like this. They hire everyone that applies, hope a few work out and let the rest go. That is no way to start your Disney career. Here is what you should look for when you are interviewing agencies:

  • Make sure the agency has been around for a while, at least 5 years.
  • Confirm that the agency is an Authorized Disney Travel Agency, which means they are on good standing with Disney and have met minimum qualifications.
  • Make sure your new agency will offer training, both initially and ongoing.
  • Verify that your new agency will provide leads to you.
  • Ask to talk to one or two other agents who work for that agency. Most agencies will have a lineup of current agents on their website, pick 2 and ask if you can call or email them.
  • Ask what percentage of applicants are hired.
  • Please note that you do not have to go to school or get licensed to become a travel agent, that does not exist. Your new agency should provide all the training you need.

Working for an existing travel agency has both positives and negatives. This is a great place for most people to start, especially if you are a novice when it comes to being a travel agent. Many agents with good travel agencies are very successful and never leave, they make great money and have fantastic support. If you think this might be your path, we strongly recommend our friends over at Mouseketrips, they really are the best around.

Option #2 – Start your own travel agency

This is literally jumping into the deep end. Starting your own agency is an option, but not really one recommended for anyone who is a brand new agent. While definitely possible, and it is what I did many many years ago, it is really a difficult process. Not only do you have to know Disney, you need to know marketing, technology, web development and so much more. Here are just some of the steps you will need to take:

  • Create a business entity such as an LLC
  • Register with your state
  • Register your domain name
  • Contact the IRS for an EIN
  • Open a bank account
  • Find an office
  • Find hosting for your website
  • Build your website
  • Figure out your email and other communications needs
  • Figure out phone numbers
  • Set up social media accounts
  • Register with a CLIA or IATA or both
  • Contact all Disney destinations and register with them to book travel
  • Figure out accounting software
  • Figure out CRM software
  • So much more!

If you have done some of this before, then it might be such a big deal to do it all again. Once all this work is done, which could take months and many thousands of dollars, you still don’t have any clients.

There are some pluses to owning your own agency of course, as you control your own destiny. You are not relying upon an agency to support you, to stay in business, to pay you what you have earned. Definitely an option if you have experience.

Option #3 – MagicalHosts

MagicalHosts is a fantastic option if you want to become a Travel Agent that specializes in Disney and Univers on your own but not have to deal with that huge list above. MagicalHosts is a bit of a hybrid between the two options above and is perfect for experienced travel agents and even new agents who have experience selling travel. So, how can MagicalHosts help you?

  • You will own your own agency, partnered with MagicalHosts.
  • We have the experience in setting up travel agencies, and will help you with most of the items listed above that may seem super difficult.

Do your homework and be careful!

There are many companies out there that promise seemingly great opportunities and compensation to potential Independent Contractors. But if it sounds too good to
be true, it probably is. Here are a few tips on what to look for in an agency:

  • Is the agency CLIA and IATAN Certified? IATAN is the top standard for the industry. Make sure first and foremost that the agency you are considering is in good standing with these two companies.
  • Does the agency offer coverage to you under their “Errors and Omissions” Insurance?
  • How long has the company been an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner? Look for a company that is in good standing with Disney.
  • Does the company have a website/websites? If so, are they registered in the 5 states that require a Seller of Travel? If the agency does not carry these registrations, it is a red flag that they may not be experienced enough to know they need to register and offer certain consumer protections required by law for you and your clients.
  • Is the agency a Trademarked company? This is very important because you will be selling travel under the company name.
  • How long has the agency been in business?
  • Are they Incorporated or LLC and registered in their home state? Pick an agency that has invested the time and resources in building the foundation of their company correctly.
  • Get to know the agency owner. Ask current and past agents what their experience was like working with the agency and owner.
  • Does the agency have a direct phone number and physical address where they can be reached? Avoid agencies that have generic phone numbers and PO Boxes.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Our ideal Disney Travel Consultant is:

  • Passionate about Disney! You don’t have to be Disney obsessed, but you do need to believe that a Disney vacation is absolutely magical, and love the experience it offers.

  • Motivated to build a business, with time to dedicate. Whether part time or full time, we are not seeking hobbyists, and we are looking for someone planning to devote at least 20 hours per week.
  • Well traveled within the Disney destinations. We’re looking for someone who has traveled to a Disney destination at least 4 times in the last 8 years, with at least 2 of those to Walt Disney World in the last 4 years. It’s an extra bonus if you’ve traveled recently to more than one Disney destination.
  • Able to demonstrate an expert level of knowledge on at least one Disney destination.
  • Able to continue traveling to a Disney destination regularly, at least once per year.

If this sounds like you, we’d be interested in learning more about you. Please fill out the form below. We will review it, and if we feel that you may be a good match for our agency, we’ll contact you for the second step in our application process.
