Bar Soap and Liquid Cleansers

Most bar soaps are too harsh to use on your face because they contain ingredients that may irritate and dry the skin. Liquid facial cleansers or foaming products are less harsh. Some even moisturize your face as they clean.

Aesthetic dermatologist Amy Derick, MD, advises women to use a liquid facial cleanser containing ceramides, lipids that help skin retain moisture.

If you insist on bar soap, avoid soaps with sodium lauryl sulfate which can dry skin. Instead, look for moisturizing soaps with ingredients such as glycerin and plant-based oils.

If you have oily skin or acne, use a cleanser containing salicylic acid, which removes dead cells from skin, or benzoyl peroxide, which helps unclog pores. This may prevent further breakouts too.

Anti-Aging Creams

How do retinoids and over-the-counter moisturizers and serums that contain retinoids help diminish signs of aging? Yale dermatologist Jeffrey Dover, MD, says they increase cell turnover and may build collagen. Another compound, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter, seems to work at the nerve level to relax wrinkles temporarily.

  • Try creams containing retinyl propionate or retinol, which are found in the skin as vitamin A derivatives.
  • Read your labels. Ingredients such as peptides and sirtuin, a protein, help smooth uneven texture and improve skin’s elasticity.
  • Look for the terms PAL KTTS, copper peptides, and palmitoyl oligopeptide on the ingredient list of anti-aging creams.

Moisturizers

The skin on your face is constantly exposed to air and pollutants that rob skin of moisture. Old-fashioned petroleum jelly has been used for decades as an inexpensive moisturizer. It works by sealing in moisture, but it’s greasy and heavy.

Moisturizers with emollients and humectants hydrate the skin without the greasy effect. Humectants help retain moisture while emollients help soften and soothe skin. Together, they can temporarily minimize fine lines around the eye or on the neck.

Many skincare products both moisturize and provide anti-aging benefits, dermatologist Doris Day, MD, says.

  • Look for creams that contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which plumps the skin temporarily, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Exfoliating Scrubs and Lotions

Ingredients in moisturizers and serums must get through the the skin’s outermost layer to work effectively. Using an exfoliator twice a week will help slough off dead skin cells, allowing creams to penetrate. It also helps make skin appear smoother and less blotchy. Some all-in-one skin cleansers and exfoliators are gentle enough to be used every day.

For an effective but gentle exfoliator, look for products containing glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or malic acid.

Antioxidant Creams

Many creams contain antioxidants, which help prevent free radicals from damaging cells. Some of the creams claim to diminish wrinkles, sallowness, and other signs of sun damage. But there are very few scientific studies that prove they really work as claimed.

If you want to try antioxidant face creams, look for products containing niacinamide, which is both an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, or the antioxidants coenzyme Q10, coffee berry extract, and soy extract. Dermatologist Robin Ashinoff, MD, says these ingredients may help reduce the signs of sun damage.

Skin Lightening

Ashinoff says over-the-counter creams containing licorice extract or kojic acid, a fungal ingredient, may lighten those unsightly “age spots” that crop up on the face and neck. But they won’t get rid of the spots completely. She recommends that women who want to lighten spots on their face look for a cream that contains hydroquinone which has been proven effective in lightening skin.

The FDA allows over-the-counter skin lightening products to contain up to 2% hydroquinone. In 2006, the FDA proposed banning hydroquinone, but that ban has not gone into effect.

The FDA also advises consumers not to use any skin lighteners that might contain mercury, a toxic metal. Those products are made abroad and have been sold illegally in the U.S. If you see “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” “mercurio,” or “mercury” on the label, stop using it immediately, wash your hands and any other parts of your body it’s touched, and call a health care professional for advice.

Sun Protection

About 80% of visible skin changes attributed to aging are caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. Preventing sun damage is the single most important thing you can do for your face.

Many facial moisturizers and creams contain broad-spectrum sunscreens that filter out UVA and UVB rays. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using broad-spectrum protection of at least SPF 30 every day. Limiting your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and wearing protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat, can also help protect your skin from sun damage.

Simple is key here. You need to find a good cleanser that your skin responds well to and stick with it.

You can find a good cleanser at the drugstore. There’s no need to spend $40 on a fancy wash. Avoid bar soaps as they tend to dry out the skin. For you organic types, you can cleanse skin with milk or yogurt (who knew?).

Here are some tried-and-true cleansing tips:

  • Be careful not to cleanse too often or you risk over-cleansing and drying out skin. Most experts agree you really only need to wash your face at night to remove makeup and sunscreen, which can clog pores.
  • In the morning, a splash of lukewarm water is all you need. If you have super oily skin, you can cleanse your skin again in the morning. Never wash your face with hot or cold water (both can cause broken capillaries).
  • Make sure to remove eye makeup with a proper makeup remover. The area around the eye is delicate so don’t pull or rub too hard. You can also use olive oil as a natural eye makeup remover.
  • If you have dry skin, consider cold cream like Pond’s, or make your own organic cold cream using a simple cold cream recipe. Simply apply the cream, then wipe off, no water needed (if you have hard water, it can be especially harsh on skin).
  • To cleanse skin, most women prefer the water method: Use warm water to loosen dirt and clogged pores. Use a dime-sized bit of cleanser, then rinse with cool or lukewarm water.
  • Skin purists believe tap water is bad for your skin because it contains harsh minerals and additives like fluoride and chlorine.

The Everyday Mask

In March 2020, the CDC began recommending that “everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public” to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Seven states (and counting) have made wearing face coverings mandatory when outside, and today many stores and businesses require customers to wear a mask to enter.

It’s a strange new world that requires the incorporation of a strange new accessory and its proper care into our daily routines for the foreseeable future.

So we spent the last four weeks developing a face mask that we’d actually want to wear. Something beautiful, comfortable, and most of all, functional. And throughout development and testing w e learned how to properly care for cloth face masks in a way that is safe and easy.

How often should I wash a face mask?

Best practice is to wash your face mask at the end of every day.

While viruses cannot live on fabric forever, early research suggest s COVID-19 can live on fabric for anywhere from several hours up to a full day. Additionally, if you were to leave the mask on a surface after you’ve worn it , there is a chance it could transfer the virus to that surface. So rather than take any risks, you’ll want to wash the mask as soon as you’ v e finished wearing it for the day.

Also, when you go to wash your mask, try not to touch your face.

What’s the best way to wash my mask?

Hand Washing

Some masks are hand – wash only , while other masks are machine washable. You’ll want to check with the supplier of your mask for their recommendations.

Washing a cloth face mask by hand is really easy. You can wash it in a sink using warm, but not scalding hot, water. Just add a bit of either soap or detergent—enough that there is definite bubbling and frothing happening throughout the mask as you lather it . If your mask has a removable filter, like ours does, you should remove this and wash it along with your mask.

A minute or two is a good safe amount of time to spend washing the mask. That’s it.

Machine Washing

Some masks, including ours, are machine washable, but we still prefer to wash th em in the sink. It’s a big waste of water to run a mask though a washable machine if it’s not going through with a full load. If you do plan to wash your mask in a washing machine, wash on cold or medium heat.

Drying

Air dry ing is the way to go. Set the damp mask on a towel overnight and it’ll be ready to wear again in the morning. D on’t dry your mask in the dry er, as t his can irreparably damage it.

Quick Fixes

If you’re in a jam and don’t have access to a sin k or some way to wash your mask, what’s the best thing to do? W e suggest taking a disinfectant wipe to all surfaces of your mask. Less thorough than washing with soap, but certainly better than doing nothing.

A few extra tips:

  • Never share your face mask. Each mask is intended for one user and it comes in such close contact with your mouth and nose that it is very risky to use another person’s face mask, even if they seem symptom – free.
  • Stop using a mask i f you notice any odd smells or unknown stains on it .
  • If your mask has a filter, check how many times the supplier says it can be washed. For instance, ours can be washed at least 20 times before the filter begins to lose its effectiveness.

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, can improve the most visible signs of aging caused by the effects of gravity, stress, and sun exposure. The procedure consists of removing excess skin and fat, tightening underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your face and neck. You should discuss your expectations with your facial plastic surgeon, but keep in mind that plastic surgeons are doctors, not magicians.

Here’s what to expect after a facelift.

Expect to look worse before you look better. Do not panic; this is normal. There will be swelling and bruising. As swelling and bruising fades, you will begin to see the results.

Keep your head elevated for two to three days to minimize swelling and to speed recovery. Do not underestimate the importance of head elevation. It will reduce your recovery time. Failure to do so may prolong recovery and may create disturbing facial asymmetry.

Following surgery, your entire head will be bandaged. The bandage may feel tight at first because it is meant to apply even pressure to your face, neck, and head to minimize bruising and swelling. The bandages are usually removed one day after surgery. You may shower and shampoo after the dressings are removed.

You will have received written instructions for your post-operative care and activity. You should limit all physical exertion for one week and only resume normal activity gradually thereafter. Do not exercise for two weeks—not even housework.

For two weeks before and after surgery, you’ll want to take the following precautions. First, refrain from taking any over-the-counter products that can cause increased bruising or bleeding. These include aspirin and aspirin-containing products, Advil, Ibuprofen, Naproxin sodium, and other NSAID medications.   In addition, eliminate garlic and dark green leafy vegetables from your diet, and stop vitamin E supplements if you take them.

Monitor your incisions for signs of infection: spreading redness, swelling, tightness, pus or drainage, excessive pain, increasing warmth. A fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or greater may also indicate an infection.

You may feel some tightness and numbness on your face and neck. This tightness generally resolves within two months. The feeling of tightness is usually due to swelling.   As the swelling goes down, your skin will loosen and then stabilize. Do not become alarmed that the facelift didn’t work. It is normal for the face to look less wrinkled initially after surgery due to swelling. Numbness may persist for several months and will gradually improve.
