If you find yourself without Wi-Fi access, you may be able to tether your iPad or iPad Mini to your laptop to get on the Internet. To do this, you need an iPad with a cellular service plan and the Personal Hotspot must be a feature available from your carrier. Once you turn on the iPad’s Personal Hotspot, the iPad acts like any other Wi-Fi access point. Any data you send or receive on the laptop through the iPad is secured using WPA2 encryption.

Tap the “Settings” icon on the iPad’s home screen. Select “General” and then tap “Cellular.”

Slide the “Cellular” switch to “On,” if it’s not on already. Select “Personal Hotspot” when it appears on the screen.

Tap the “Personal Hotspot” button to turn this option on. The iPad’s Wi-Fi password appears on the screen. Tap the password to change it if desired.

Click the “Wireless Network” icon on the laptop’s screen. The icon is in the bottom right corner and looks like a series of vertical bars.

Click the iPad’s name in the list of available networks and then click “Connect.” Enter the iPad’s Wi-Fi password when prompted. Launch your Web browser to connect to the Internet using the iPad’s cellular service network.

  • If you don’t see Personal Hotspot appear on the screen after turning on the iPad’s Cellular Data option, contact your cellular carrier to see if this feature is available.
  • Once the iPad’s Personal Hotspot is turned on, you can access it directly from the Settings main screen.
  • You can also connect the iPad to a laptop using Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi. To do this, turn on Bluetooth on the iPad’s Settings screen, activate Bluetooth on the laptop and then follow the onscreen instructions to pair the iPad to the laptop. The iPad Mini and iPad 3rd generation or later can also share a cellular Internet connection with a laptop using a USB cable.
  • Using your iPad’s Cellular Data option may result in additional charges on your cellular service plan. You can monitor data usage by tapping “General” in Settings, selecting “Usage” and then “Cellular Usage.”

In order to connect your Apple iPad to an Apple server, you need a third-party application that establishes connections to remote servers via Telnet, FTP or SSH. Additionally, you also need an Internet connection. All iPad models allow you to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, while more expensive models allow you to access the Internet via a cellular data network as well.

Press the “Home” button on your iPad.

Tap “App Store,” then tap “Search.”

Type a search term such as “FTP,” “Telnet” or “SSH” in order to find an application that you can use to connect to the remote server. Tap “Search” after entering the search word.

Tap “Free” or the price listed next to the name of the application. Tap “Install.”

Type your Apple ID at the prompt. You may also be asked to type in your Apple ID password at this time. The app should now download onto your iPad.

Tap the remote server app’s icon in order to launch it.

Tap the button for the command, which should now be showing on your iPad interface. This will open a new remote connection. Type in the IP address of the remote server.

Type your Apple ID as well as your password. Tap “Connect.” You should now be able to access the Apple server remotely.

Using a USB cable or adapter, you can directly connect iPad and a Mac or Windows PC.

Make sure you have one of the following:

Mac with a USB port and OS X 10.9 or later

PC with a USB port and Windows 7 or later

Connect iPad to the USB port on your computer using the charging cable for your iPad.

If the cable isn’t compatible with the port on your computer, do one of the following:

If your iPad came with a Lightning to USB cable and your computer has a USB-C port, connect the USB end of the cable to a USB-C to USB Adapter (sold separately), or use a USB-C to Lightning Cable (sold separately).

If your iPad came with a USB-C to Lightning cable and your computer has a USB port, use a Lightning to USB Cable (sold separately).

If your iPad came with a USB-C Charge Cable and your computer has a USB port, use a USB-C to USB Adapter and a USB-A cable (each sold separately).

If your iPad came with a Thunderbolt 4 / USB-4 charging cable and your computer has a USB port, use a USB-C to USB Adapter and a USB-A cable (each sold separately). (You can use Thunderbolt or USB cables with Thunderbolt devices like iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) and iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation).)

Do any of the following:

Set up your iPad for the first time.

Transfer files between your iPad and computer.

Sync content between your iPad and computer.

Share your iPad internet connection (Wi-Fi + Cellular models) with your computer.

The iPad battery charges when iPad is connected to your computer and your computer is connected to power.

I have an iTunes Library on a Windows 10 PC that only has USB 2 and USB 3 connections but no USB C connections. I have the same problem as you. I got 2 Windows computer running Windows 10. One Desktop and One Laptop. I tried all the cables out there. from USB to USB-C Cable, I also bought there USB to USB-C Apple Adapter. None work. The iPad don’t even have power when it connect. PC don’t even know my iPad Pro is there! I finally need to go out and buy an USB-C PCI-Express Card from Amazon and plug it into my Desktop Computer.

Once the PCI-Express Card installed, Windows 10 detected the card. But under Device Manager I got an Error code 10 on USB 3.1 HUB. So I reboot the PC, and everything is working. I plug my new iPad Pro in, at first it won’t detect, but at less it charge. Then I go into Device Manager again Right Click my mouse and Scan for new hardware changes. And right there, Windows detected my iPad Pro! After that everything works!

So Windows 10 users! Go get yourself a PCI-Express USB-C Card! For Laptop, you are out of luck! Because I tried all USB to USB-C cable out there. none work!
