A flyer is one of the most effective marketing materials out there. In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to create a flyer in Photoshop from scratch, even if you have limited knowledge of Photoshop. Grab the audience’s attention with an appealing and smart flyer design.
1. Create a New Document
Launch Photoshop. Click on “Create new”. To use the standard flyer size select “Letter” from the document presets. Enter the preset details according to your needs, or simply use the values you see in the screenshot below. Once you have done that, click on the “Create” button at the bottom of the screen.
2. Create a New Layer
To start creating a flyer, type Shift+Ctrl+N/Shift+Cmd+N to automatically create a new Layer. This is going to be our background. Select the color of your background in the Color Picker window and click “OK.” Since my flyer will be autumn-themed, I’ll be using the beige color.
If you find a solid color background to be boring, try making a gradient in Photoshop.
3. Draw with the Pen Tool
Grab the Pen Tool(P) from the Tools Panel. Use it to add new details, like straight and curvy lines. All you have to do is click and release to create anchor points. This will add straight lines. If you want to make curvy lines, drag and then release to create anchor points.
4. Draw a Circle
The next step of learning how to create a flyer in Photoshop is grabbing the Ellipse Tool (U) and drawing a circle with it. This is going to be the shape of our photo. Feel free to experiment with shaped to see which ones are going to suit your design better.
5. Create Clipping Mask
Next, we are going to create a clipping mask. Drag the photo to the working area to add it to your design. Go up to the “Layer” menu in the Menu Bar and choose “Create Clipping Mask”.
If you prefer speeding up your workflow with Photoshop keyboard shortcuts, use the Ctrl+Alt+G/Cmd+Opt+G key combination. Now your image is going to be oval-shaped.
Clipping masks are similar to regular masking in Photoshop, since they both control layer visibility but in different ways.
6. Decorate with the Pen Tool
Add finishing touches to your flyer with the Pen tool. Decorate the space that looks empty. Make sure to create a cohesive color scheme in your flyer. Adding the color wheel in Photoshop can help you sample colors from the images in your design.
7. Add Text
Grab the Type Tool(T) from the tools palette on the left. Adjust it to your needs. Change its size, color, and font, using the menu right above the working area. Now, anywhere you click in your image you’ll be able to add text.
I’ll position my text at the top, as well as right below the photo. Make sure to include contact information, prices, or any relevant icons, like your company’s logo.
8. Done! Save the Flyer
You’re almost done. All you have to do now is save the flyer, by going to the “File” tab at the top and clicking on “Save.” Alternatively, use the Ctrl+S/Cmd+S hotkey.

The content should be short. To the point. Include a clear call to action. And lack excessive punctuation or capital letters (there’s no need for exclamation points and words in all caps).

4) Contact information should be easy to find and read (separate from the call to action)
The contact information should not be the first thing a user sees when they open an email, but it should be prominently displayed and large enough to be noticed.

How do I get a two-sided flyer for printing?

I have a client and he’s been wanting me to create an e-flyer for him. When I first read it, I wasn’t paying much attention to the details so I ended up thinking he just wanted a flyer for printing. So when I checked again cause I’ve been wanting to work on it, I realized that it’s an e-flyer and I have no idea how to do this. I’ve read articles and discussions here but I can’t seem to find the answer.
So here’s the approach that I’ve been thinking. Please tell me if it’s correct or not and the disadvantages of using this approach and a better way of doing it.
- Use Photoshop to design the header, footer, body/background
- Then use divs or tables to have it working (my client wants a video on the e-flyer as well)
Also, I want to know what would be the best width for an e-flyer and can I use CSS for the layout and fonts?

“e-flier” is a bit of a nonsense term. It means nothing since electronic delivery can be done in so many various ways.
If the client wants a file he can email to perspective people when requested, then a PDF is appropriate. You can embed video, audio, and other interactive elements in a PDF. How you generate the PDF really depends upon what software you have available. Adobe InDesign has many features designed to create interactive PDFs.
If the client wants a “landing page”, single web page, or link he can direct people to then standard HTML/CSS markup is appropriate. Basically, it’s just a web page. Create it how you would create any other web page.
If the client wants an email to be sent out to perspective people, then using HTML tables is more appropriate. Yes I typed “tables”. Email clients are still well behind many browsers. If you want email clients to see things properly using tables is still the best method. You should avoid all background images (some email providers strip them away like GMail) and make all your CSS inline rather than external or referenced in the header. In this case, I can not state emphatically enough that a video in the email is a very poor idea. You should try with all your might to discourage this. It will raise the spam rating of the email considerably. High spam level marks will get the client blacklisted from many email services. Once blacklisted, it can take quite some effort to get white listed again. There are some helpful services for email HTML files such as Premailer which will move styles to inline and other things in preparation for emailing.
