If you were walking down your street all alone and someone suddenly approaches you with a knife in hand, what would you do? Oh, you think it is not possible? Stop dreaming, my friend; it is very possible! It could be a mugger, who wants your wallet or your smart phone. It could be a furious ex of your girlfriend, who wants to take it out on you. It could be a murderer, who for some reason decides to use a knife rather than snipe at you from afar.

Once again, the big question is, what would you do? Did I just hear you say you would run away? Well, that’s a very good idea – frankly. 1. Stay calm

Though it’s not easy to hide one’s fear in such a situation, try to suppress it as much as you can. If you panic, you would be giving your attacker a very good advantage right from the start. Take a deep breath and relax while you figure out what the attacker is up to. If he’s not a mugger, you don’t have to nurse any fear. Chances are that he’s not a professional at what he’s trying to do. So, stay calm and confident.

2. Surrender if only that would save you

If your attacker is a mugger and you can sense some professionalism in how he handles the knife and how he approached you, it’s better for you to give in. Your smart phone and your wallet are nothing when compared to your life.

3. Plan smartly

If you are sure your attacker isn’t well skilled or you can sense some elements of low confidence in him, you may want to attack rather than surrender to him. If he seems to be an amateur mugger, tell him with confidence that you don’t have anything and that he should leave you alone. Of course, he won’t leave you, but your confidence will probably send some drips of fear down his spine.

Most of the time, if you tell an amateur that you don’t have anything on you; he would try to search you. In that case, allow him. But while he is searching you, keep watch on the knife and find a way to either knock it off his hand or land a heavy blow on his head (an uppercut would be great).

Raise your hands, with your palms facing forward. But keep watch on the attacker and the knife while trying to launch your attack strategy.

Attacks are sudden, and when they happen, it’s all too easy for panic to take over. But with some simple self-defence tactics under your belt, it doesn’t have to. Stay safe on the street with these five essential moves, and be prepared for anything.

First, here’s some rules of thumb for if you’re being attacked:

● Make as much noise as possible. While you’re defending yourself, yell/scream at your assailant to draw attention to your location, so passersby can interject.

Use your head, knees and elbows where you can. These are the hardest parts of your body, so will provide the most impact (if used efficiently).

● Remember: the objective is to run away. Don’t put yourself in more danger. If you manage to injure your assailant, use the opportunity to get back to safety.

Train with an expert and be sure you are prepared if needed.

1. Hurt their nose

Using the palm of your hand, strike your attacker in an upward forward motion against their nose. The nose is extremely sensitive, so even a move as simple as this can cause it to break or bleed. Whatever the result, they should be hurt enough for you to get out of there.

2. Restrain them with a wristlock

If you think fast, you can momentarily disable your attacker with a wristlock. To do this, flip your assailant’s palm up, then twist and force it towards the ground. This’ll throw them off, but probably won’t stop the attack completely, so pair this tactic with an attack of your own (such as a kick to the groin or headbutt) before escaping.

3. Poke them in the eye

It sounds simple, but something as small as poking your assailant in the eye can stop them, as it’ll really hurt them and they won’t be able to see what they’re doing. Don’t be afraid to be a little forceful – a lot of self-defence experts recommend you use a ‘weapon’, like your keys, to defend yourself, ensuring your attacker’s vision is impaired long enough for you to run off.

4. Backwards headbutt

If an attacker grabs you from behind, jerk your head back as hard as you can so that you hit them in the face or neck. This should loosen their grip on you. If they don’t quite let go, bend down and reach between your legs to grab the back of their calf or knee, and pull it towards you with as much force as possible. They should lose their balance or even fall over backwards entirely, giving you more time to get out.

5. Forwards headbutt

A lot of attackers attempt to pin their victims against the wall. If this happens to you, you have a few options. Either dip your body a little and then shoot up to headbutt them in the jaw, or, if their arms are on either side of you, punch them as hard as you can in the armpit so that one breaks away.

Instead, use a straight, open-palm strike aimed at the nose; they are just as effective and painful to the opponent, yet less dangerous to you.

The Neck and Throat

A sufficiently powerful frontal strike to the neck with a clenched fist can temporarily incapacitate your opponent, crushing their windpipe and leaving them gasping for air. However, it’s challenging to land, and it’s unlikely you’ll have a good angle of attack to pull it off.

An alternative technique is to hit the side of the neck using a knife-hand strike, also known as a karate chop, in which you use the side of your hand opposite of where your thumb is or use one of your elbows. If you land it correctly, it can stun your opponent long enough for you to get out of the situation.

The Groin

As most people know, a well-placed hit to the groin against a male opponent can cause extreme pain. With enough force, a kick to the groin can even leave them writhing on the ground. If you have an opportunity to kick this area, don’t hesitate to attack.

The Knees

Kneecaps are vulnerable to well-placed hits from almost all angles. A well-executed hit to the kneecaps can drop an opponent, no matter how powerful they are. There are two primary angles of attack to consider: the front of the kneecap and the side. A frontal hit can cause more damage, whereas a side hit can disturb their balance and cause them to stumble or even fall.

It’s also relatively challenging to defend against kicks to the kneecaps. Unless your opponent has significant martial arts training, there is little they can do to block it.

Here are five of the most common types of attacks — from a simple wrist hold to a stranger wielding a knife — and how to defend yourself and get away safely. The most important thing you can do with these tactics is to PRACTICE! Attacks happen very quickly, and there’s often little time to react. Practice these moves until they become instinct.

1. Arm Grab From Behind

When someone grabs both arms from behind and lifts up, they control your upper body. If they continue to yank your arms upward (especially if they’re taller), it’ll put a lot of pressure on the shoulders and force your upper body forward.

Although the attacker is controlling your upper body, they’re not controlling your lower body. Use that strength for leverage.

HOW TO ESCAPE: Turn the narrow part of your wrist toward the opening of their grip (between the thumb and fingers), and then drive your elbow downward, toward their elbow. By doing so, you use the web between their thumb and index finger as a point of leverage to pry their hand open and to free your own hand.

Once your hand is free, throw an elbow backwards, in order to do as much damage as possible and to free your other arm. If they still don’t let go, continue to strike until they do.

2. Choke From Behind

HOW TO ESCAPE: Bring your chin to your chest as much as you can. Step one foot backward at about a 45 degree angle and bring your upper body down, simultaneously bringing your arms up as high as you can.

Cup your hands as if you were trying to create little hooks. Bring your arms down explosively to rip the attacker’s hands off your throat. Strike the attacker’s groin with your nearest hand, and then use the elbow of the same arm to thrust upward toward the attacker’s chin and nose.

How to defend yourself from an attacker

Can you imagine what the consequences may be if you face an attacker? We can suggest some methods which, if you apply properly, might save the day for you.

Observe the Attacker

To quote the military genius and author of ‘The Art of War,’ Sun Tzu , “If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not to fear the results of 100 battles.” Always be alert especially in deserted lanes. Try to figure out the possible assailant(s). Observe them as keenly as possible. Lookout for any hidden weapons. Try to gauge their strength, stamina and the fighting prowess. Most importantly try to understand their motives.

Avoid the Fight

In case you do understand the motive of the attacker, try to negate the fight verbally. Again, to quote Sun Tzu, “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” It is not wise to engage with the attackers if they are carrying weapons. You should also avoid any physical altercation if you are facing two or more assailants. Real life is a different from reel life. You are not an action hero so don’t act like one. Muhammad Ali, arguably the best boxer ever to have stepped in the ring, also tried to escape when attacked by a white supremacist biker gang. There is no shame in running or surrendering your wallet if your act averts such dangerous situations.

Counterattack

If the fight is unavoidable, then make sure that you hit your attacker back on every opportunity. Taking strikes while lying on the ground will not help you. You must counterattack and let your attacker feel the pain. Not only he would be discouraged to continue the fight with you, but will also think twice before attacking the next victim.

Always be Defensive

If you have got any self-defense training, especially boxing, then you might recall your coach insisting on always keeping your guard (the hands protecting you) up. Keep your hands up to protect your face and head, the two most vulnerable parts of your body.

The defensive posture would also be in your favor in case the law enforcing agencies catch you fighting with the attacker. The people witnessing the fight will judge you as the victim and report the same. On the contrary, an aggressive posture might confuse onlookers. You might lose out on your possible witnesses, or worse, they might also blame you. Instead of you being the victim the observers might claim witnessing the fight between two criminals.

Innovate

Try to innovate during the fight and use anything suitable as a weapon to attack the aggressor. It might be something in your pocket like car keys, a belt, bag or even your shoes. Do remember attack is the best defense.

Ask for Help

In case your fight prolongs then most probably you would be able to notice other people witnessing your struggle. Ask them to call the cops and the emergency numbers. The caller and the others most probably will become your witness as the law enforcing agencies pacify the situation.
