Some people put way too much information in a header, and that can make a document look ugly and even confuse the reader, especially in print form.

Therefore, it’s important to know how to remove a header in Google Docs.

Header and footer modifications don’t have quick shortcut buttons. For that reason, they may not be as intuitive as other Google Docs features. So, it’s no surprise that more than a few people struggle with this in their own documents or those from other authors.

Yet, Google Docs does simplify the removal process compared to other text editors for PC, Mac, and mobile device users.

In this article, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of removing a header, when to remove it, and how to edit it if you want a less definitive alternative.

What is a Header in Google Docs?

A header is a unique section located at the top of a document page. It’s not something enabled by default, it’s something that the document author has to insert for it to show. The header also turns up in the print version of the document.

It can be used to highlight important information about the text, the author, or the document itself since it’s editable text. Headers are usually simple strings of text but can contain entire sentences and numbers.

Why Use a Header in Google Docs?

Using header, and footer, gives documents a more professional look. First of all, a header can be used for page numbering, even though footers are often more convenient. Nevertheless, this can help put a Google document in order after it’s printed if the pages are in the wrong order.

But remember that it’s optional and not needed in every type document. Hence, it’s important to know how to remove it too. Especially when editing someone else’s file.

How to Remove a Header in Google Docs

As useful as headers sometimes are, poorly added headers can make things difficult. They can make an article unsightly or show unnecessary information on all pages. If you’re still struggling to manage headers in Google Docs, this tutorial will help you make the changes you want.

First, make sure that the document you want to adjust is editable. After that, open the document and double click on the header you want to remove. This will make the header text editable and bring up the options button. Click it to bring up the dropdown menu.

From the list of options choose the ‘Remove header’ option. You can do this manually on every page or just the pages you want to remove headers from. Most people use this function when the first page doesn’t display relevant information, or if it’s used as the first page at which the counting starts.

Note that you can’t remove headers when using the mobile version of Google Docs. What you can do is delete the header text. However, the header section will still remain on the document. This means that the formatting will still be different and will affect the printed version of the document.

If you want to make your header look a certain way instead of deleting it, you need to access the formatting options. For this, click on the Format button at the top of the document and hover over the ‘Headers & footers’ option.

Click on the ‘More Options’ button and make the appropriate changes. Together with header text editing, this can help fix some problems without having to completely remove the header. It’s most useful when you can only do mobile editing.

How do I edit a header in Google Docs?

To edit a header in Google Docs you have to be in Edit mode. You can click the ‘More’ icon and bring up the Print layout. From there, you can access the Header and Footer option and edit the text in your header. Alternatively, you can double click on a header and edit it from there. This is the best option, especially if you have different headers on each page.

How do you remove the header from the second page in Google Docs?

There are two ways to do this. You can remove all headers and create individual headers on all other pages. Or you can double click on the second page header, click the options button, and then click the remove header option.

How do you make a different header for each page?

Click on the ‘Format’ button and then hover over the ‘Headers & footers’ options. Click on the ‘More options’ menu to bring up ‘Headers & footers’ formatting menu. Under the layout section, select ‘Different first page’ and ‘Different odd & even options.’ You can then put a different header on every page and ensure it won’t repeat on the following pages.

How do you create an MLA header?

The rules of an MLA header are simple. You start 1” from the top margin and align the text to the left. Type the author name, instructor name, course and course number, and date, each on its own line, with double spacing in between. Don’t use any punctuation marks. The author’s last name followed by the page number should be in the top right corner, one row above where the header text starts.

What is a header used for?

A header can have multiple uses, depending on the type of document it’s used in. Usually, it has descriptive purposes and may contain anything from author name, to page number, dates, number of revisions, or even graphics.

Conclusion

Using headers in documents can be tricky because they have so many uses and because they’re not always needed. Hopefully, this article taught you how to master the headers in Google Docs, when to use them, when not to, and how to remove them or edit them accordingly.

It can be a powerful descriptive element but also a nuisance if applied incorrectly, especially in the printed version of a document.

The header section of your document is a useful place to put important information like your last name or page number.

Many schools and corporations have strict formatting requirements for documents, which typically involve putting some information in those locations.

Google Docs also has a lot of tools and settings that you can take advantage of if you need to apply some certain or unusual formatting to your document. This even means that you can completely eliminate the header area from your document.

You can remove a Google Docs header by either double-clicking in the header, choosing Options, and selecting Remove header, or you can go to File > Page setup and change the Top margin to “0.”

But if you are creating a document that doesn’t need any information in the header, and you would prefer to eliminate the white space at the top of your document, then it’s possible to remove the header in Google Docs.

Our tutorial below will show you how to do this by reducing the size of the top margin to 0.

How Can I Remove the Header Area in Google Docs?

  1. Open the document.
  2. Select the File tab.
  3. Choose Page Setup.
  4. Chnage the top margin to “0” then click OK.

Our guide continues below with additional information on the Google Docs removing header process, including pictures of these steps.

The steps in this guide were performed in the desktop version of Google Chrome, but will also work in other desktop browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

Note that you can set the size of the Google Docs header to 0, but there will still be a small amount of white space at the top of the page. The same goes for other margins as well, such as the left, right, or bottom.

Step 1: Sign in to your Google Drive account and open the document where you want to remove the header.

Step 2: Click the File tab at the top of the window.

How to Remove or Add Content in the Header of a Google Docs Document in the Google Docs App

If you are using the mobile version of Google Docs on your Android or iOS device then you may need to know how to edit the header content there as well. You can do this with the following steps.

  1. Open the Google Docs app.
  2. Open the document.
  3. Tap the three dots icon at the top-right of the screen.
  4. Touch the Print layout toggle switch.
  5. Select the pencil icon at the bottom-right of the screen.
  6. Tap inside the header section and edit the content as needed.

If you need to remove the header section in the mobile app then you can tap the three dots at the top-right of the app and choose Page setup. There you will select the Margins option, choose Custom, then change the top margin value to 0.

More Information on How to Get Rid of Top Margin in Google Docs

Note that if you have information in the header currently, such as your name or a page number, then the header will still display that information. If you delete it the header will reduce to reflect the 0 margin size.

Effectively this means that you will have a header or top margin with a size of 0, it’s just forced to expand to include the page numbers or title or whatever you currently have in the header space.

While we have focused on how to remove header sections from a Google Docs document in this guide, you can go more than just modify Google Docs headers from the Page Setup menu.

This is a good way to change the other margins in your document if your school or organization has specific document formatting requirements that have margin specifications.

if you need to make changes to your header format, rather than choosing to remove headers entirely, then you may need to go to a different location.

For example, if you need to customize page numbering for your document, then you would do so by going to Format > page numbers. This “Page Numbers” Menu gives you options for putting the page numbers in the header or footer, a “Show on first page” box that you can check or uncheck depending on whether or not you wish to include the page number on the first page header or footer, and you can even select a number at which you would like the page numbering to begin.

If you double-click inside the header text space in the document you will see a check box for Different first page, as well as an Options dropdown menu that includes options for Header format, Page numbers, and Remove header. This is another option that you have if you want to completely remove the header from your Google Docs document.

Disable the Automatic List Detection in Google Docs

As one of the most popular word processing applications, Google Docs includes a few list formatting options. One of them is automatic list detection and it activates every time you type in number 1 followed by a dot or space key. Automatic list detection can save you time when you’re adding a list to your document. However, if you aren’t typing a list or don’t like the formatting used by Google Docs when creating lists, you may wish to stop it. Fortunately, Google Docs has an option that prevents automatic list formation. Here’s how to turn off auto numbering in Word and Google Docs: Open any Google Doc. Click Tools from the top menu. Select Preferences. Uncheck the box next to Automatically detect lists. Click OK. Google Docs will no longer apply the list formatting to any text that appears to be a list. This change will apply to any future documents created or updated using the same Google account. What if you need to create a list? You can still apply the list formatting to text, even after you’ve disabled automatic list detection. Bulleted and numbered lists can be created using the intended buttons from the toolbar. Click these buttons and list formatting will kick-off. There’s no option to disable auto-indentation for Google Docs lists; you can use the ruler from the top of the document to change the indent of your list (make sure you select the list first, before moving the arrows). Now you know how to disable the automatic list detection feature in Google Docs.

Accept or Reject all Suggestions in Google Docs

Google Docs enables Google Workspace users to collaborate on documents in real-time and from any device. Suggestions mode is a Google Docs feature that allows collaborators to make suggested edits, which can then be approved or rejected by others. When someone adds suggestions to a document, you will see them displayed on the right side of the page, just like in the example below. You can then accept or reject them individually… but what if there was a way to resolve all suggestions with just a couple of clicks? Fortunately, we know the right trick to do this. To accept or reject all suggestions in Google Docs: From the menu bar, go to Tools and then click on Review suggested edits. A pop up will show up in the right corner of the page with the options to accept or reject all suggestions. You can also preview the edits before making a decision. Choose an option and allow the document to update. This may take a few moments based on the number of suggestions. If you have accidentally clicked the wrong button, simply press Ctrl+ Z on your keyboard to undo the changes (Cmd ⌘ + Z on Mac). This tip will save lots of time next time you have to resolve suggestions in a document.

A header is what is written right at the top of your document. Most of the academic writings and even for professional papers, headers are used to bring clarity to your work to remind people what the paper is titled. Mostly, headers include the title of the paper so that the reader does not have to turn back the pages to relate to the topic. Not every page in the report or the thesis has a header. The title pages, for example, will not have headers.

Let’s first have a look at how you can add a header to your document on Google Docs. You can also create a header and a footer either for your first page or for any number of pages in the document.

Adding a Header to your Document on Google Docs

  1. Open a blank document on your Google Docs. To add a header, click on your first page of the document, then click on Insert, and find the tab for Header and Page Number. When you bring your cursor to ‘Header and Page Number’ the tab will extend and show you the options out of which you need to click on Header. How to delete a header in google docsClicking on Insert on your Google Docs is where you will find Header options for your document. This is also where you can add a footer(notes at the end of the page), page numbers and also display a page count for the reader.
  2. Once you click on the header, your document will look like this. How to delete a header in google docsClicking on Header in the previous step displays the page like this, where you will add a note, a title, or your name as per your requirements for a header.

Write whatever the title is, or whatever you want to be visible as a header to the reader, type it in the space for Header. Once you have written, take your cursor and click it anywhere on the document to make the header permanent.

How to delete a header in google docsYour header has been added
You can alter the space or the margins for a header by clicking on the header, and then clicking on the ‘Options’ tab written in blue that appears on the screen right next to ‘Different first page’ as shown in the pictures above.
Clicking on Options will lead you to this dialogue box, where you can change the margins of your header depending on your requirements of the paper.

Usually, the header should not take too much space on your paper. So keep it to limited space as well as a different font size in comparison to the main content of the paper.

Deleting a Header on Google Docs

Deleting a header is easier than adding a header. When you have to add a header to your document, you have to follow a few steps before you can actually add it. But for deleting a header, all you need to use it the backspace button on your keyboard or the delete key.

  1. Click on the title or the space for the header where you already have added something. In my case, I have written Habiba Rehman as a header. When I click on that space, the page looks like this. How to delete a header in google docsClick on the header that you added. This will make the options for Header editing visible as shown in the picture

Now because I want to delete the header from all the documents, I will simply backspace my name all the way.

How to delete a header in google docsBackspace or press delete on the text that you have added as a header to delete it.

Just how I clicked anywhere on the document to make the header permanent, I will do the same again to make these settings permanent. The header will now not be visible on any of the pages of the document.

Easy right? Deleting a header from a document on Google Docs is a one-major step process. Use the keys on the keyboard to delete the header, and you are good to go. But this is the case only if you want to delete it from all the pages of the entire document.

However, if you want to remove the header ‘only’ from the first page and not from the entire document, here is what you need to do.

  • When we added a header in the earlier steps, remember the option which said ‘Different First Page’ with a checkbox? This is where that checkbox will be used.
  • To make the header start from the second page, you need to check this box. This will delete the header from the first page, and make it visible from the second and pages that follow. How to delete a header in google docsThis option for ‘different first page’ plays a crucial role in managing your header for any document How to delete a header in google docsThis is the second page of my document which still shows the header as I added it. The first page, however, does not have a header anymore because I selected the option for ‘different first page’

Un-check the box for ‘different first page’ if you change your mind later.

How to delete a header in google docs

By default, a new document in Google Docs has a dedicated space at the top to enter the header details. Although the header is needed for long documents, most regular documents don’t require header details. However, you’ll still have this big white space at the top of every document and every page inside that document.

If you are interested in removing the header in a Google Docs document — like for printing maybe — then it’s not that easy. There are no dedicated options to delete the header in Google Docs, but there are a few workarounds. Today, I’ll show you 2 ways to get rid of header in Google Docs.

Adjust header and page margins to remove the header

Technically, this solution doesn’t actually remove the header in your Google Docs document. However, you can essentially remove the white space at the top of each page, which serves the same purpose in most cases.

What you need to do is remove the top page and header margins to remove the white space at the top. This will keep the header option available at the top, but the white space will be removed.

Here’s how to do it:

Double-click on the header section (the white space) at the top and click on the “Options” button.

How to delete a header in google docs

Here enter “0” (zero) in the text box next to “Header” and then click on “Apply”.

How to delete a header in google docs

To remove the page margins, click on the “File” menu at the top-left corner and select the “Page setup” option.

How to delete a header in google docs

Now under the “Margins” section, enter “0” (zero) in the text box next to “Top” and click on “OK”.

How to delete a header in google docs

This will remove both header and page margins and you’ll see that white space is removed from the top. Although a single line of space will remain on which you can click to enter header details.

Remove header in Google Docs with a third-party add-on

If you want to completely remove the header along with the single line of white space, then that is also possible with a custom script. Adding and using a custom script can be a little difficult, but thankfully, there is a Google Docs add-on available as well that makes things much simpler. Although if you are interested in manually installing the script instead, you’ll find it in this Stack Exchange discussion.

The add-on I am talking about is Documents by Top Contributors(NO LONGER AVAILABLE), which lets you remove both header and footer in any Google Docs document. Just click on the install button and provide the required account permissions to install the add-on. Once installed, go to Add-ons > Documents by Top Contributors > Remove header/footer and click on “Remove header”.

How to delete a header in google docs

This will remove the header from your Google Docs document. You will notice that even the single line of white space is removed and clicking anywhere on the top will not reveal the header section.

How to delete a header in google docs

Warning: After removing the header with this add-on (or script) you will not be able to bring it back for that specific document. Make sure you want to permanently remove the header from this document before using this method, otherwise you’ll have to move the document’s content to a different document.

Ending thoughts

I believe the first method is much safer and easier to follow if you just want to remove the top white space that the header is taking. However, if you want to completely remove the header from your document, then you must use the dedicated script/add-on. Let us know in the comments if you know any other way to remove the header in Google Docs.

The Google Docs API lets you insert or delete text in a document. Moving text involves both operations, preceded by a get of the content.

You can insert or delete text in any of a document’s segments (header, footer, footnotes, or body).

    Inserting text

To insert text into a document, use the BatchUpdate method and include an InsertTextRequest with the text and location as the payload.

The following example shows how you might insert a series of text strings at specified index locations in the body of a document. The example picks three target offsets (25, 50, and 75) and inserts a ten-character string at each location.

    Python

Each insertion increments all the higher-numbered indexes by the size of the inserted text. The example precalculates the result of these index changes so that subsequent insertions happen at the new, corrected offset. Thus to insert at the original target offsets of 25, 50, and 75, the actual insertion indexes are:

    Deleting text

To delete text from a document, first construct a Range that defines the range of text to delete. Then use the BatchUpdate method and include a DeleteContentRangeRequest.

The following example shows how you might delete the text between index 10 and index 24 in the body of a document.

    Python

Simplify matters by writing backwards. As with insertions, deleting text alters the indexes of all the text “below” in the segment. Again, writing backwards can simplify your handling of indexes.

    Moving text

To move text, you delete it in one location and then insert it at another location. But deleting content doesn’t give you a copy of it (there is no equivalent concept to the clipboard, for example) so you must extract the contents of the range to use in your insert request.
