I’m a fan of all things Oreos. Vanilla, chocolate, double-stuffed…you name it and I’ll eat it. I pretty much think that Oreos are one of the best cookies out there. And that’s saying a lot.

But one thing that I realized always adds flavor and taste is that a bit of chocolate flavoring can really go far. This also means that you can easily change up the look of your Oreos as well.

Patriotic treats are always on my mind once the 4th of July comes around so I’m so excited that this cookie recipe is one that I can whip up in a short amount of time. I LOVE Oreos.

This is also a simple recipe that the whole family can join in on as well. Since there literally isn’t any baking required at all, it’s all hands on deck for decorating and dipping.

Here’s the great part about this dessert. Once you dip and decorate, these cookies will last for up to 2 weeks! As long as you store them in a container with a lid and keep them out of the air, you’ll have no issue keeping them crunchy and fresh.

This means that you can make them fresh for the big Independence Day celebration or you can plan ahead a bit and give you a few days of grace.

You don’t have to! (but you totally can if you want to!) These Oreos can be kept at room temperature or stored in the fridge as well. It all really depends on your preference and what temperature you want to have them at.

How to Dip Oreos in Chocolate

This recipe is crazy fast and simple to do! Anyone can do it and have amazing results.

Melt the chocolate

The key to melting the chocolate is to use the microwave or a double boiler on low to medium heat. You also need to be certain that you’re stirring and melting the chocolate one flavor at a time.

Don’t burn the chocolate

Trust me, it happens. And when it does there is no coming back from it and the whole thing has to be redone. So make certain that you pay attention and are stirring the whole time.

Layout parchment paper

Parchment or wax paper is going to be your best friend throughout this. Make certain that you have plenty on hand. It’s the quickest way to a fast clean up.

Dipping the Oreos

You’re only going to dip the Oreos halfway down so make a mental note of that. This means that you can easily hold into one side with your fingers while you’re dipping the rest.

Once you dip and have a chocolate coating, add on the chocolate sprinkles or whatever kind of sprinkles you’re using asap.

Vary up the chocolate

You can use white chocolate or milk chocolate for this recipe, it’s totally up to you. Have a taste test and see what you like the best.

White Chocolate Dipped Oreos

As you can see half of the Oreo cookies are dipped in white chocolate which tends to show off colors in the decorations more.

Let the cookies cool

Once you dip the Oreos, they’ll need to harden on the parchment paper for about 30 minutes or so. It’ll be hard to be patient but it’s so worth it.

Tips for Making Half Dipped Oreos

  • Don’t own a double boiler? No worries. Place a heat-safe bowl over top a medium bowl and allow it to nest. Place your chocolate inside the bowl and the water in the pot will heat the bottom of the bowl, slowly melting the chocolate inside.
  • For this recipe, I highly recommend Ghirardelli Melting Wafers. In my experience, this wafer does the best job at firming quickly and will never require the chocolate to have to be placed in the freezer for firming.
  • If you use a brand of melting wafers that do not allow for your chocolate to firm completely after 30 minutes, place in the refrigerator until fully firm.

Who loves Chocolate Dipped Oreos?!

I do, I do! I mean I am a chocolate lover, and I can never get enough of those Oreo sandwich cookies. I’m always up for a good cookies and cream dessert. And who doesn’t love chocolate, and more chocolate?

I mean really, these chocolate covered Oreo’s are delicious. They look so festive too! These elevated dipped Oreos are perfectly sweet and oh so cute with sprinkles on top. You can get creative with those decorations too. Try themed sprinkles, or drizzle a colored white chocolate over top for a bit of fun.

These make cute gifts as well. Wrap them up in cellophane for a quick and easy present. Or bring them to your next playdate or party. They are sure to impress!

How to dip oreos in chocolate

How to Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

MELT. In a sauce pan over LOW heat melt the candy coating. Stir constantly.

COAT. Use a fork to dip each Oreo in the chocolate. Cover completely then gently tap the fork against the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate.

SPRINKLE. Place the covered Oreo on a piece of parchment paper and top with the sprinkles.

COOL. Allow them to cool and dry completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Chocolate Foot : A chocolate foot is created when excess coating pools around the base of the treat. To help prevent this allow excess coating to drip off before placing on the parchment paper to set. If you do notice chocolate beginning to pool, use a toothpick to “cut” the pool away from the treat. If a foot has set, simply break/trim it off.

Benefits of using candy coating

You can use chocolate chips in a pinch, but I recommend using a high quality melting chocolate or candy coating. We love the Ghirardelli melting wafers for dipping fruit and candies and chocolate. Almond bark and baking chocolates also work.

  1. Candy coating doesn’t develop the chalky white substance sometimes found with chocolate chips. So you can store them for quite awhile and they look as delicious as the day they were made.
  2. Unlike chocolate which can be thick when dipped, the candy coating melts with a thin even layer and the finish is super smooth.
  3. Super easy to melt in the microwave or use a saucepan on the stove.

Change it Up

Types of Oreo : There are so many different types of Oreos. From chocolate to golden and regular cream to peanut butter cream. I haven’t found an Oreo that I didn’t like especially when covered with an added layer of delicious candy coating.

Not only can you switch up the type of Oreo used but you can have fun with colors and toppings. Be creative!

  • Add food coloring to white chocolate or vanilla candy coating
  • Drizzle pattern. Once the dipped Oreo has set, use more melted candy to drizzle a pattern on top. You can even use contrasting colors to make the pattern “pop”.
  • Oreo Lollipop: Stick a sucker stick into the cream of the Oreo. Dip the Oreo in chocolate. Dry. Wrap individually with cellophane or sucker baggie.
  • Sprinkles: Be sure to add when the coating is wet.
    • Holiday sprinkles
    • Chopped nuts
    • Crushed candy cane
    • Mini M&Ms
    • Coconut flakes

Can I Dip The Whole Cookie?

If you want to dip the entire cookie instead of just half, you can definitely do that. When dipping the entire cookie, I have found the easiest method is to put the tines of a fork into the cream filling and then dip it and simply slide off the fork. This keeps the mess to a minimum and makes sure the entire cookie is coated nicely.

How to dip oreos in chocolate

Can I Dip These in Different Coatings?

I used vanilla candy coating, otherwise called almond bark. If you want to use chocolate bark or even colored candy coating, feel free to do that instead. While dipping into melted chocolate chips might work, it will not be as pretty and may harden faster than you want. There are some trial and error with that, so sticking with bark or coating designed for that purpose is usually best.

What Can I Use to Decorate My Dipped Oreo Cookies?

The best part of this is in the decorating! I like grabbing the kids to help so I don’t feel so rushed while dipping the cookies. Lay the different toppings out in bowls beside your parchment paper and then let them pick what they want to sprinkle on top. Below are some great ideas for adding to the top of your dipped Oreo cookies.

    • Colored shredded coconut flakes.
    • Mini chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, or peppermint chips.
    • Crushed peppermint candy or candy canes.
    • Oreo cookie crumbs.
    • Crushed candy like toffee bits, Butterfinger bars, M&M’s, or Reese’s pieces.
    • Sprinkles in multiple colors and styles. , candy stars, or candy snowflakes.
    • Colored sugar or baking sugars.
    • Drizzles of melted chocolate or alternate colors of candy coating.
    • Powdered sugar or cocoa powder lightly dusted over the top.

    How Long Are These Good?

As long as you keep them in an air tight container, these are usually good for 7-10 days. The biggest concern is that the cookies will get stale after longer periods of time. The candy coating does not have to be refrigerated and usually won’t go bad for a very long time, so these can be made a few days in advance, but are best the first 2-3 days when the cookies are freshest.

If you want easy to make ideas that everyone loves, look no further! Below are some of the best ideas we have found for making and sharing around the holidays.

    Chef’s Tip

I love adding sprinkles to things like this, but not just the regular colored ones you find in stores. Go the extra mile to buy special holiday themed sprinkles. Some of my favorites this year are the ugly Christmas sweater sprinkle blend, Christmas ornament sprinkles,Rockefeller Christmas sprinkle mix, Merry and Bright Christmas sprinkles, and the baubles and wishes sprinkles blend.

How to dip oreos in chocolate

So a few weeks ago, my oven just quit on me. Kapoot. Done. Finato! See ya later, aligator. I had plans to bake up all sorts of Christmas cookies and treats to share on this blog with you all. But clearly the Universe had other plans. Like a new double oven coming my way. I would just need to find some patience.

That would mean no Raspberry Rugelach, or none of my Grandma’s Russian Tea Cakes. What was a girl who has a baking blog to do? Whip up some no bake Christmas goodies instead. Like this chocolate fudge, or maybe some peppermint bark, and of course can’t forget some irresistible Oreo balls of course.

But today, I’m sharing with you a simple, no fuss (can we even call it a recipe?!) recipe for chocolate covered Oreos. Yes just two ingredients, and let’s not forget some sprinkles on top (so I guess that’s 3 ingredients) and you have a Christmas treat that no one can resist.

So maybe I don’t have an oven, but that isn’t going to stop me from still whipping up some easy chocolate covered Oreos.

    Chocolate For Dipping The Oreos

I like to use either Wilton Candy melts, or Ghiradelli melting wafers. These melt beautifully and create a shiny finish. There’s no need to temper this chocolate, just melt in your microwave. You can use semi-sweet, milk chocolate, or white chocolate or a combination of both.

If you don’t have either but still want to make Oreos, you can use chocolate chips. I recommend stirring in a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening to keep the chocolate shiny and smooth.

How to dip oreos in chocolate

How To Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

    Dip the Oreos in chocolate

    1. Melt chocolate according to package directions. I do this in my microwave in 15-second increments, and stir until smooth. I like to melt two different kinds of chocolate (white and dark chocolate in two separate bowls) but you can use just one type of chocolate.
    2. Using a fork, place one oreo into the bowl of melted chocolate.
    3. Flip over the oreo, so it gets completely covered. Lift the oreo out of the chocolate with the fork, and tap it gently on the side of the bowl to shake off the excess chocolate and let the extra chocolate drip off into the bowl.
    4. Place the Oreos onto a parchment lined baked sheet and top with sprinkles.

    Recipe Tips

    • Use Ghirardelli melting wafers or candy melts for best results. I like the melting wafers for best flavor and results but the candy melts also work. These are best for creating a shiny, smooth finish on your Oreos.
    • Allow to cool before enjoying. Let the chocolate harden for about 30 minutes, at room temperature, or quicken the process for about 15 minutes in the fridge. If you plan on adding a drizzle of another chocolate do so after the chocolate hardens.
    • Place some parchment paper under your dipping bowl. This makes for easy clean up once you’re done, as you’re bound to dribble some chocolate on your counter when moving the Oreos over to your baking sheet.
    • Dip with a fork, do not pierce. You want to dip the Oreos into the chocolate using the fork, and not try to pierce the filling as your cookies will fall apart.
    • Tap the dipped Oreos on the side of the bowl. You want to tap the Oreos and shake off the excess chocolate to make for a shiny smooth coating.

    Recipe FAQ’s

These will last for about 2 weeks, in a container, at room temperature. Just make sure it’s not hot out or it will melt the chocolate. Or store in your fridge for about 3 weeks.

Yes, for up to 3 months, in a container. Thaw in the fridge overnight, or on your counter at room temperature if you want them thawed much faster.

Any variety will work just fine! I used regular, but golden Oreos, peppermint, or double stuff are also great options.

Oh my gosh, these easy to make chocolate covered Oreos are so fun. This may seem crazy, but Oreos are my favorite cookie! Yes, I love homemade cookies, but for some reason, the original Oreo cookie is my favorite cookie ever! I stick to the original Oreo with the regular filling, not the “stuffed” ones. You could make these treats with vanilla Oreos as well. I just bought the chocolate ones because I love chocolate!

Here’s a tidbit about my favorite cookie, and I quote Wikipedia, “Oreo is an American sandwich cookie consisting of two wafers with a sweet crème filling. Introduced on March 6, 1912, Oreo is the best selling cookie brand in the United States. As of 2018, the version sold in the U.S. is made by the Nabisco division of Mondelez International.” In case you missed this post, Valentine’s Day Sour Cream Sugar Cookie Recipe

    How do I store these?

Here’s the deal, if your kitchen is warm, the chocolate may soften to the point of melting a bit. I would keep them in the refrigerator placed on parchment paper in an airtight container, if possible.

    Can I freeze them?

I would not recommend it because the chocolate may crack and “sweat” when they thaw.

Can I make these without the sticks?

Yes, you can for sure. You can use your fingers to dip them or use a set of Dipping Tools like these.

Best Chocolate for Chocolate Covered Oreos

When making chocolate covered Oreos I have found that the best chocolate to use is candy melts. Candy melts are not as temperamental as chocolate and it is much easier to work with compared to chocolate chips.

When I made these chocolate covered Oreos I used white chocolate candy melts and drizzled dark chocolate candy melts on top of them. When you are making them you can use white chocolate candy melts, dark chocolate candy melts or milk chocolate candy melts as the base and pick whichever other colored chocolate candy melts you want to drizzle on the top of them. You can also use colored candy melts and melt them just the same.

Most importantly use a quality chocolate melting chip such as Wilton candy melts or Ghirardelli Melting Wafers.

      Chocolate Covered Oreos Cookie toppings

One thing I love about these cookies is how easy they are to customize. Aside from customizing the flavor of chocolate and drizzling more chocolate on top of them you can decorate them easily too.

I like to sometimes decorate mine with sprinkles. All you have to do is give the sprinkle container a shake on top while the chocolate is still warm, right after you set the cookies on the tray to cool.

If you are wanting Halloween Oreos you can sprinkle some fun Halloween sprinkles. Want Christmas Oreos use some red candy melts and add some Christmas sprinkles. Having a birthday party, use coordinating candy melts and sprinkles to decorate them to match. I could go on and on but you get the point.

Can you Freeze Chocolate covered Oreos?

I do not suggest freezing these chocolate covered cookies. I also do not recommend leaving these cookies in sunlight or a hot area. All of these things will disrupt the chocolate that you have dipped them in.

How to Store Chocolate Covered Oreos

Chocolate covered Oreo cookies will stay fresh when they are stored in an air tight container at room temperature. When you are storing them in an airtight container you will want to layer the cookies on a single layer. Then place a piece of parchment paper and layer more. Variations for chocolate dipped Oreos

Add a filling– Open up the Oreos before dipping them in chocolate and add 1/2 teaspoon of filling, such as marshmallow fluff, peanut butter, Nutella, or Biscoff cookie spread. Then cover them back up and dip them in chocolate. You can even add a frosting filling such as: Marshmallow Frosting, Mint Frosting, Maraschino Cherry Frosting, Easy Orange Frosting, Cream Cheese Frosting or Strawberry Buttercream Frosting.

Make them for different seasons– For example, you can use red and green sprinkles or melt red baking chocolate for Christmas, use orange and yellow sprinkles and drizzle the tops with orange baking chocolate for Halloween, or decorate with pink hearts for Valentines day. The possibilities are endless! Have fun with it.

Use a different kind of Oreo Cookie- There are so many different flavors that come out, especially around various seasons. Whether it’s mint, carrot cake, or peppermint, each can be dipped in yummy chocolate.

Use different types of chips for melting/dipping– With so many fun choices of baking chips out there, it is fun to try something new, such as mint, peppermint, peanut butter, butterscotch and more.

Sprinkle options- Instead of just using sprinkles, you can use crushed up candy canes, Nerds, chopped up Butterfingers or other candy bars, or use other small candies like m&m, nuts, dried fruits, shredded coconut.

Tips and techniques for chocolate coated Oreos

What chocolate to use for dipping and coating cookies?– I used regular chocolate chips, but you can use various baking chips, or chocolate bark or even candy melts for dipping.

Don’t burn the chocolate- Because there is no way to fix it and you will end up with chunky burnt bits. If using a microwave to melt the chocolate, do it in short intervals and stir in between to prevent burning.

Use parchment or wax paper- To place dipped cookies on so that you don’t have a huge mess to clean up, the chocolate won’t stick to your countertop, and the cookies will have a cleaner look once taken off the paper.

Use a fork- To dip each Oreo in the chocolate and then tap it to the side of the bowl to drain off excess chocolate.

Sprinkle toppings before chocolate sets- You will want to put sprinkles on just after dipping, because otherwise the chocolate will cool and the sprinkles won’t stick.

      Storage

Room Temperature- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Fridge- You can store in an airtight container, separating each layer of cookies with parchment paper. However, I recommend simply keeping them at room temperature.

Freezer- This is not recommended, because the chocolate coating may crack as it thaws.
