  • Using both hands, gently push your fingers through your hair and on to your scalp, gently rubbing your head with your fingers, using whatever pressure that feels good to you – do this all over your head 2 or 3 times.

  • Next, take handfuls of your hair and very gently and slowly tug your hair – this will ease tension from your scalp.

  • Go on to rub and squeeze your temples using the heels of your hands with your fingertips pointing up and on your head. Make slow circular movements.

    Begin by choosing an oil. Sesame, mustard, almond, coconut, and olive oils are most commonly used. Massage the oil into your head, starting from the sides and working towards the top.     Grasp fistfuls of hair at the roots and tug from side to side, keeping your knuckles very close to the scalp. Squeeze at the temples with the heels of the hands and make slow, wide, circular movements. Look down slightly and massage the back of the neck by squeezing and rolling the muscles. Begin at the top of the neck and work your way down, first with one hand and then with the other hand.

    Place the thumb of your left hand under the left occipital area (base of the head) and the thumb of your right hand under the right occipital area and relax the tight muscles by using friction or a rubbing movement.

    Place your left hand on your right shoulder near your neck. Using medium pressure, gently squeeze the shoulder muscle that starts at the base of your neck. Work your way outwards along your shoulder to your arm and then down as far as your elbow. When you reach your elbow, go back to the base of your neck and do this twice more. Concentrate on squeezing the muscle tissue.

    Now place the flattened palm of your left hand beside the base of your neck on the right-hand side. Rub along the top of your right shoulder and continue down your right arm where you squeezed the muscles before. When you reach your elbow, go back to the base of the neck and repeat the action twice. Change arms and work the other side.

    Finally, rub lightly with your hands all over the head; extend this movement to cover your face. You can use these movements without oil. If possible, allow a few minutes afterwards to relax.

If you have bruising or damage to any areas that will be touched you should not go ahead. Unless you had knocked yourself to cause the bruising, it could indicate an underlying illness.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Treatment can cause blood pressure to rise. If you have high blood pressure already it’s strongly advised you don’t have a massage.

Epilepsy

It’s a small risk, but there is a risk of the client having a seizure while being massaged.

Diabetes

One of the side effects of the massage is lowing a person’s blood sugar. Depending on the type and severity of the diabetes this can cause problems.

Thrombosis

Blood clots or thrombosis in veins means a massage can potentially be dangerous. The clot can become lose a travel through the vein to the heart.

Cuts and Sores

Cuts, sores and wounds are contraindications for a massage. It’s not hygienic or safe when a therapists are using their hands and rubbing these areas. It can cause an infection to start, or spread.

Head massages originated as part of the ancient Indian practice of medicine, called Ayurveda, based on balancing the body, mind and spirit to promote a long life. Indian women began offering head massages to their daughters more than 1,000 years ago. They combined them with oils, which included coconut, almond, olive and buttermilk, to keep their hair in good condition. Indian barbers have made head massages part of the hair cutting treatment for men, as a means to refresh their clients. Traditional Indian head massage originally included just a massage of the scalp and hair. Modern Indian head massages include neck, face and shoulders as well. Knowing just a little bit of what to expect can help take the edge off of any nerves you might have, and enable you to look forward to a wonderful experience! Here is what you need to know:

Did you call the Doctor?

The reception room may be similar to a doctors office rather than a spa, depending on whether the place is a clinic for Ayurvedic health or more like an Ayurvedic retreat type place. Don’t be alarmed, you are in for a treat either way.

Wear the Loin Cloth with Pride

This is probably the most useful info I can give you, based on my slightly embarrassing experience. They will give you what they will refer to as underwear as they send you into the bathroom to get undressed. It resembles more of a long paper loin cloth with long ties/string hanging from it. You are meant to place it between your legs, belly to back, then tie the strings around your waste, tucking the back end up into it (or tucking the front end into it, depending if you went the other way, back to belly). You can certainly ask for help too, and it is unlikely they will bat an eyelash, so no worries. Good stuff to know beforehand ;-).

Bliss

Once you have the underwear squared away, commonly they will have you sit in a chair to start your massage. Enjoy the amazing scalp and shoulder massage with earthy deep aromas coming from the Ayurvedic oils.

The Ta-Tas

An Indian Ayurvedic Massage includes a full pectoral massage – for men and women. There will only be women working on women and men working on men. There is not any shyness about it; it is just a body part after all. Don’t be alarmed, they are very professional. However, if you do have any issues with it, you should inquire beforehand to see if that part can be skipped.

Feeling Slick

As I’ve mentioned, Ayurvedic massage involves warm oil, lots of oil, mixed with a variety of herbs. At the end of the massage, your masseuse will wipe you down lightly with a towel, taking off at least one layer. Or there may be a shower and bathroom where they have you go to rinse off. It is best if you rinse or wipe off only the excess and leave some of the oil on for several hours afterwards, to receive its full healing benefits. Basically, there is no chance of you washing or wiping all of the oil off at one time anyway. Wear clothes that are comfortable, simple cotton, nothing fancy, so that when you get dressed you are not worried about the fabric against your luxuriously oily skin.

Leave the oils in your hair too – so delicious for your scalp and hair. When you are ready to finally wash it out, know that it will take several rounds of shampoo before your hair will feel “normal” again. Personally, my hair is so thick that I don’t mind shampooing it just once, a few hours later, then allowing it to absorb the rest of the oil over a few days when I shampoo it again.

It can also help slow your resting heart rate and lower your blood pressure, taking some of the work and strain away from the heart. Any improved circulation in the scalp is bound to have some positive effects on the rest of the circulatory system, and that reduction of stress and tension just adds to those effects.

Things to Remember

When you incorporate scalp massage into your massage therapy practices, be mindful of your clients’ comfort levels. You should first check with them to see if they are comfortable with a head massage because not all clients like to have their hair touched. Next, be considerate of their hair. If your massage is too intense, it could tangle the hair and potentially break some follicles. You don’t want to cause more harm than good.

A good approach to scalp massage is to start closer to the face and temples, working your way back along the scalp until you reach the neck area in the back of the head. Some spas or massage therapists include a scalp massage as part of a total body massage, while others may offer it as an added service. Either way, you should expect a scalp massage to take anywhere from five to fifteen minutes, depending on your client’s needs.

You may also want to use a different massage oil for the scalp than you do for the rest of the body, if you plan on using oil at all. Look for natural oils such as coconut, almond, avocado, or jojoba oils that are also moisturizing for hair in addition to a dry scalp. A scalp massage can also be done without oil, but if you want to use it, remember that a little goes a long way.

Getting to know you

These massage techniques can be done for babies of all ages although you’ll find that when your baby starts crawling, she might not lie still for long enough to do all of them.

For the best chance of success, don’t try to massage your baby just before or after a meal or when she’s tired. Also make sure the temperature in the room is comfortable. If your baby is hungry, tired or cold, she is not likely to enjoy her massage.

When you think she’s ready, set yourself up on the bed or the floor with a towel and some baby massage oil.

If your baby seems to be uncomfortable or starts crying before you have finished the massage, stop and give her a cuddle instead.

Your baby’s legs are a good place to begin the massage, as they’re less sensitive than some parts of her body.

Using a little oil, wrap your hands around one of her thighs and pull down, one hand after the other, squeezing gently, as if you’re “milking” her leg.

Read on for some really good reasons why your treatment is totally private here. OK, so let’s think about this question for a moment using a few other questions. This might help explain it bit better for you.

  1. To some extent you are a private person. You don’t want everyone to know everything about your business do you? What happens during a discreet Relaxing Massage is private. No one else will ever know.
  2. Imagine that you are stressed and are holding onto that stress in your tense muscles. This will be completely private information between you and your therapist that others don’t need to know.
  3. You booked last week and at last you are going to get your long-awaited massage. Would you prefer the entrance to be on a busy public street where everyone can see you go in or on a quiet road?
  4. Now, just imagine you are going to disrobe down to your underwear, as you would when trying on some new clothes. Do you want that to be in public or would you prefer it to be in a discreet environment?
  5. Next, imagine you are going to lay down as above. Then have someone manipulate your skin and underlying tissues to help you relax. Should everyone know this and see it or should it just be between you and your therapist?
  6. As your therapist relaxes you, you may inadvertently comment positively or sigh in pleasure due to that totally relaxing feeling as it happens. Only your therapist will recognise this when it happens here, no one else will ever know.
  7. You may be made of a bit more than skin and bone. What ever size you are is OK we do not judge you here. This is kept private it is not discussed with anyone else.
  8. Your other half might not like the idea of you being touched and soothed all over by another person. That’s OK too, we don’t tell anyone.

You may be thinking, “I wash my hair to have it not be oily. Why then would I purposely choose to put oil in my hair?” It does seem counterintuitive, but a good oiled scalp massage will help to increase circulation in the head and neck, which in turn will promote healthy hair growth. The lubrication will condition the scalp to prevent flakes, soften the hair, and increase luster. When this becomes a regular practice, over time your hair will become stronger and more resilient.

Choosing the Right Oil

There are a few specific reasons we promote oil on the head. Oiling the scalp helps to pacify vata dosha, which is made up of the elements of air and ether. Vata is considered the king of all doshas because vata rules all movement, voluntary or involuntary, in your mind and body. It is important to keep the vata dosha balanced in order to have a calm, worry free mind, balanced nervous system, and good elimination. If you find yourself feeling worried, anxious, or ungrounded, using sesame or almond oil will be helpful. Another option is to use an herb infused oil, such as Vata Massage Oil. Some of the herbs in this oil that are used to calm vata dosha are ashwagandha, tulsi, and bala.

If you are a fiery pitta person, the cooling aspect of coconut oil is a good choice. Coconut will naturally calm your intense nature. Due to too much heat in the body, pitta folks can experience receding hair lines, premature greying, or thinning of the hair. These individuals can often have tightness in the neck and head from too much work, staying up late, or excess eye stress from computers. Brahmi Coconut Oil is an herbal blend that soothes the mind and cools the body, making it a great choice for pitta as well.

One of the traits of kapha is long, luxurious, thick locks. But that does not mean this individual will not benefit from a hair treatment. Sunflower oil is nice and light, and it is a great option for kapha. If you are looking for an infused oil, perhaps try one with neem for purifying, as well as punarnava or chitrak for creating a stimulating effect. Kapha Massage Oil contains all these great herbs and it will help fortify and strengthen the hair.

So here you are with your oily head and, if I may add, a serene mind. You have had a wonderful night’s sleep, or perhaps a nice relaxing afternoon, and the time has come to get the oil out. What to do?

That being said, the very first thing you do not want to do is stick your head under running water. In my personal experience, that just doesn’t go very well. Here are a few ways to get the oil out of your hair without losing the benefit.

3 Ways to Get the Oil Out

Add Shampoo to Dry Hair

My personal technique is to apply a high quality shampoo that is not full of chemicals, directly to my oily head. I don’t get my head wet first—let me repeat—I do not wet my head first. I just apply the shampoo directly to my hair, gently work it in with my fingers and let it sit for about 15–20 minutes. Then I do my first water shampoo followed by a good old fashioned rinse and repeat. I do like to finish with a light and, again, high quality conditioner to detangle, and lastly give it a good combing out.

I have found this system works for my hair but not all hair is the same. This is just like an Ayurvedic diet; what works for one person brings another person out of balance. There are other suggestions that have worked for some of my clients. So let’s dive in.

Conditioner First

For some people, the exact opposite way to get oil out is to saturate the hair in conditioner first. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes and then give a good rinse.

Use a Flour to Absorb the Oil

Another more traditional method is using green gram flour. Green gram flour is made from mung beans that have been ground into a flour. Yep, it is that simple. Take about a cup of the flour, add water to make a paste, and massage it through your hair. You don’t need to leave it on that long and it sometimes can take 2–3 applications to get all the oil out.

Please remember, whichever method you choose, do not apply hot water to the top of the head while washing your hair. According to Ayurveda, the top of the head is very sensitive, and extreme heat to this area can seriously aggravate pitta. That being said, if you are using coconut oil and you apply cold water to the head, you are in a pickle. Coconut oil stays solid in cooler temperatures. Let’s take the middle path of nice warm water to give a good rinse to the hair.

Don’t be afraid to give this a try—you will not believe the results. Once you start to see and feel the difference that oil applied to the head/hair makes, I think you will be happy to begin to make this part of your regular routine.

If you want stronger, softer and shinier hair you need to pamper your locks with the goodness of an oil massage. Since your hair is exposed to pollution, dust and chemical-laden products, you hair needs a little bit of TLC on a regular basis. By giving yourself a hair oil massage you will restore the moisture and make your hair healthy. You can use carrier oil along with essential oils like tea tree oil, cedarwood, lavender. Essential oils can do wonders to your hair. Since essential oils are highly concentrated, they are diluted using a carrier oil. But you can also stick to applying just the carrier oils such as coconut oil or virgin olive oil. STEP 1: Before you start oiling your hair, brush it so that you get rid of all the knots and tangles. This will make the process of oil application easy.

STEP 2: Section your hair into two parts for easy application. Split your hair right down the middle of your scalp. Pull one section over your left shoulder and the other over your right shoulder. STEP 3: Pour about one teaspoon of coconut oil or olive oil on your palm and rub your hands together to spread it well. Using your fingertips work it into your scalp thoroughly. Use circular motions to work the oil into the roots of your hair, use your fingertips to stimulate the scalp.

STEP 4: Move in a consistent pattern and try to cover the entire scalp area. Do not neglect the back of your head. The area behind your ears and the area just above the nape also needs attention. STEP 5: Each time you need to add one teaspoon of oil and work it into the scalp, so that it does not result in a dripping mess. Now that you have covered the entire scalp, start the application through the length of your hair. Take some oil, rub it onto your palms and run your hands through the length of your hair.

STEP 6: Massage your hair and scalp for about 10-15 minutes, comb your hair so that the oil spreads evenly and then tie your hair. Let the oil penetrate into your scalp for 30 minutes. You can also leave this overnight, but do not leave it on for more than 24 hours as your hair will start attracting dirt. Wash off the oil in the morning with a mild shampoo. As a woman who’s been in the spa business as a therapist and a manager for over five years, I’ve basically seen everything — the good, the bad, the downright awkward. Not to mention, like all massage therapists, I put up with a seemingly endless stream of “happy ending” jokes all. the. time. And while everyone thinks these jokes are hilarious, the reality is that every massage therapist does have to deal with a few sexually. heightened moments with male clients over the course of his or her career.

But let me just say that boners during massage appointments are totally normal. So to all the guys out there: You don’t need to be embarrassed. There is no need to dart out of the room. Most massage therapists are professionals and won’t just stare at your hard-on. We really don’t want you to feel any more uncomfortable than you already are. So just relax — and know that we are not judging you.

That said, there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed. What do I mean by that? Let me break it down for you.

There Is No Need For Show And Tell

Wow sir, I see you have an enormous erection! How might I know this? Because you have ever-so-unkindly removed the blanket that was (purposefully) placed on top of you to make certain I am aware of your arousal. And then to add to my misery you want to talk about it!? Ugh. Gross. These little scenarios I’m completely over. You know what I’m thinking during this game of show and tell? That I want to end the service immediately — and I totally would if I could! Though, if you make this mistake, I’ll offer you the chance to take the hint that this behavior is not OK by placing another blanket on top you, all while silently praying that this is where your shameless peacocking display ends. If not, though — we are done.

No Table Humping

No, really, this happens. If a male client is aroused and then his position is switched to lying on his stomach, I have observed (far too many times) that he might start humping the table. Humping or “purposeful wiggling” — however you want to term it — is a sexual act that is awkward and disarming. Who knows how it might end? To be clear, I understand a client’s need to adjust himself and possibly rein in his boner if he has one so that the rest of the service can be enjoyed. But please do not hump the table until you are “satisfied.” Or else I will have to, you guessed it, end the service — and no one wants that.

Do Not Touch The Therapist

Unless you are having a heart attack or another similar kind of extreme physical episode that renders you unable to use your vocal cords, please do not touch your therapist during your service. Just because I am touching you in a therapeutic manner and sending you healing energy, this does not mean you can grab my legs, arms or try to guide my hands. This is especially true if you are erect, as this will send me over the edge and I will cut our session short. Here’s what touching is appropriate: shaking hands before or after your service. And perhaps, if you are an established regular with your therapist, hugs might be acceptable. But this is it.

Do Not Give Directions To Your Penis

If a guy is sporting some wood and asks me to massage his inner thighs or stomach, guess what? I know exactly what you’re up to — and I’m not going to do it. You are fooling no one. Do you think my hand is going to magically start tugging on Little Tommy because you are inviting me to massage around where he hangs out? Uh. Nope. In such cases, I’m totally disgusted and will likely give you a less-than-average-level massage, just so you don’t get the wrong idea.

Don’t Blow It: Masturbate Before Your Appointment

Just so no one is confused: This is something I am asking you to do. Listen, to be real, clients do ejaculate during appointments and these are the incidents a therapist retraces in his or her mind over and over for eternity. We think: Was there anything that could have prevented this? To my fellow therapists: Please remember that if this happens during one of your services, it was not your fault. Clients: Keep in mind that in the event that you do finish before your session finishes, your therapist isn’t going to be able to erase this incident from his or her mind. ever. And generally, the standard protocol is for the client to be banned from returning to the spa ever again. And this probably goes without saying: Everyone at the front desk will look at you like a creep as you weasel your way out the front door. Now how is that for a happy ending?

To be clear, my intention is not to boner-shame anyone. I am just educating the misinformed who think “happy endings” are a real thing — as 99 percent of the time, this is not the case.

Please, thank you, and come again! (Sorry, after five years of happy ending “jokes,” I had to.)

There are a list of questions to ask your client before you begin massage therapy. These should always be asked before you consider beginning work. Depending on the client, this may take a very short amount of time, however, it’s important to understand exactly why we ask these questions, and why they’re so important.

Some clients may be quick to answer the routine questions, but there will be others who might find them a little trickier. Treat each client individually, and don’t assume an answer until you have it from them. Go through a short interview process with each one before asking them to lie down and beginning the treatment.

Remember to also employ active listening techniques and pay attention to their body language. We’ve put together a sample of some questions that you might ask a client before you begin treatment, so you can easily gauge the type of massage they’re looking for, and can treat them appropriately in regards to their past experience and potential injuries.

Have you been to a massage therapist before?

This question is a great first interview number, as it tells you a lot of information in one. Firstly, it tells you whether this is the first time they’re attempting to do something about their condition, or whether there’s a history of practise that has or hasn’t worked before.

This can cut your consultation time down significantly and allow you to find the best course of action quickly and efficiently. If they know techniques that have worked (or techniques that have failed to work) you can use your own expertise to determine where to progress from there.

Are you in pain? Where does it hurt, and how?

No matter your approach to this question, you should attempt to find out the source of their visit. Is it to relieve stress build-up, or is their condition more chronic? Determining their needs is a multi-step process, but you have to begin somewhere.

What is your profession?

You can learn a lot from a client by asking this question. If a client is complaining of lower back pain, it can stem from many situations. If they work all day moving large boxes around a storage warehouse, you might be able to cut down on a few of those possibilities and devise a way to both heal the injury and prevent it from happening again.

Get further into this question by asking how they perform any of the tasks that you feel might contribute, even if it’s as simple as how they sit on their office chair.

How are you affected by this injury?

Now that you know their basic working lifestyle and condition, find out what outcomes they’d like to achieve at the end of your sessions. People often come to massage therapists quite late into the proceedings, rather than preventatively or as soon as possible, so you may be helping people who are already experiencing a lot of disruption in their daily life from a common injury.

Have you tried anything else?

This ties in and has the same outcomes as our first question, but also lets you know if they’ve tried any other conventional (or non-conventional) remedies.

Do you have any other conditions?

This is a helpful question, however it’s important to remember that your client is not obligated to answer. Find out if there are any complicating factors at play, or anything that might put them at risk through certain techniques.

Ask them to go over their health form

Ask them a few questions regarding their completed health form, even if they’re fairly routine. This will allow them to feel as if you’re giving them a full rundown (which you are, but it’s also important to make people feeling safe and secure).

If there are any oddities within their form, ask them to explain them in greater detail. People sometimes are more willing to talk to a healthcare professional than they are to write out intimate details on a form, as it feels more personal and less committed. Don’t probe too deeply, and always respect your client’s wishes, but try to understand what’s going on.

Are you taking any medications that may be a contraindication to massage?

It’s vital to know whether your client is taking any medications that may affect their massage experience, or alter the type of massage that is appropriate for their needs. This includes medications such as anticoagulant medications (or blood thinners) such as Warfarin.

Do you have any allergies?

People often forget to mention things that may be obvious to you, so it’s important to still cover the basic questions before you begin treatment, such as if your client is allergic to something. The last thing you want is for your client to be breaking out in a rash because you’ve used an oil for their treatment that they’re allergic to. Always better to be safe than sorry!

Do you know about the process of massage therapy?

Ask them how much they understand about the treatment they’re about to receive. If they’ve been to a massage therapist before, explain what might make your process different. If not, explain the basics of how what you’re about to do is going to help them as an individual.

You don’t have to go over the entire history of massage, but tell them what you’re going to be concentrating on or what techniques you might be using for them to help.

Ask them to roleplay any specific pain issues

If your client is complaining of a repetitive pain, and it’s not debilitating enough that they’re unwilling to do it, ask them to quickly run through a movement cycle akin to what causes the pain. If it’s reaching for something, get them to pretend to reach for something, and so on. You’ll be able to tell when, where, and why they’re hurting (in most cases).

Ask a few personal questions, and make conversation

Finally, remember that massage is about relaxation, and about keeping your client in a position where they feel secure. They’re entrusting a lot to you, so try and be communicative and pleasant to put them at ease and make sure they enjoy their massage experience (and that they keep coming back to you for more!)

Do I Need an ‘Official’ Massage Qualification to be a Massage Therapist in the UK?

Choosing the correct massage therapy course in the UK can be a minefield, especially with different courses claiming to be “Official” or “Fully Regulated”. A good starting point is to understand that here in the UK, the massage industry is completely unregulated. The scary truth is that anyone can call themselves a massage therapist and give massage treatments without having any training at all! Of course that is not appropriate and we certainly wouldn’t recommend that!

If you want to run your own business as a massage therapist there is no requirement at all to have a qualification such as a degree, nor a Level 3 RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) in place like an ITEC – they are simply not necessary. Getting an ITEC involves a long and drawn out process of being taught in a classroom situation whilst having to memorise extensive Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) knowledge with various exams to pass. We really don’t feel that this is the best environment in which to learn massage. Most of the A&P that is taught will never be used in the working life of a massage therapist.

What Should I Look for to Get Accredited?

Professional Indemnity Insurance

There are some outside factors that provide some regulation to the massage industry though. The main one is a requirement to having professional indemnity insurance. Even though there are no legal requirements here in the UK that states that you need to have indemnity insurance to work as a massage therapist, it would be inadvisable and reckless not to have it. Furthermore, many establishments would not allow a massage therapist to work on their premises if they weren’t covered by professional indemnity insurance.

Not all massage qualifications are recognised by the insurance companies, so it’s important to choose a course that will give you a qualification that will enable you to get insured and start massaging immediately!

The main thing that regulates massage therapists though is their own abilities. Putting it simply, if the massage is not to a good standard then clients won’t come back. Word soon spreads! Without effective training, massage therapists are unlikely to have any kind of meaningful career.

Belonging to a Governing Body

Therapists who train choose to train with a different training provider to myself may be eligible to join an organisation like Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT).

Some local authorities would insist that you have a ‘special license’ to provide massage from a home location. Graduates who train with me to Level 3 and become a member of Thinktree are then exempt from having to apply for a Special Treatment License.

• Dampen hair with water and apply oil to both scalp and hair. Leave on for as long as you prefer. Wash with a mild shampoo.

• Raised cuticle scales will readily absorb oil. If oiling after washing hair, avoid applying to the roots as it can weigh down your hair.

• If you’re short on time, simply mix a few drops of hair oil with your conditioner and massage into hair strands.

• Fill a bowl with water and add a tablespoon of hair oil to it. Swish around and soak your hair in it for 15-20 minutes. Wrap a towel around your head to maximise benefits, leaving on for an hour or so. Wash off with a mild shampoo.

• Fill a spray bottle with water and add in a few drops of hair oil. Shake well and spray onto damp hair. This nourishes hair and protects it from damage caused by heat styling procedures and tools.

• Apply hair to dry scalp and hair. Soak a towel in warm water and wring it. Wrap around head to enhance the healing properties of the oil.

• When oiling hair, don’t dump all the oil onto your head; dip your fingers into the oil, make partitions in your hair with your fingers, and gently apply onto scalp. Indulekha Bringha Oil comes with a selfie comb – a unique dispensing mechanism that helps in application.

• It’s possible that your hair fall is caused by improper massage techniques; rubbing oil into the scalp using your palm will likely lead to breakage. Massage your scalp using your fingertips for 10-15 minutes to boost blood circulation. Refrain from tugging at your hair.

• One rule to abide by when massaging the scalp is to not use your fingernails. Massage techniques are of two types – effleurage and petrissage. Effleurage uses stroking and circular movement of hands, while petrissage involves lifting and kneading the scalp. The former is most recommended and beneficial.

• Consider dabbing on oil on the scalp with a piece of cotton – it’s gentler than your fingers.

• Using more hair oil than is necessary won’t do your tresses any good. You’ll also need more shampoo to wash it off. So remember to use adequate oil, but don’t douse your hair and scalp in it.

• Always remove knots and tangles before massaging your hair or else you’ll end up with more tangles leading to breakage.

• Bear in mind that hair roots tend to loosen up after a head massage so avoid tying hair up tightly as it can lead to hair fall.

• Oiling hair regularly is a must for maximum benefits, but too often and you could do more harm than good for your locks. Stick to massaging no more than twice a week. Remember that shampooing too often can strip your scalp and hair of natural oils, worsening skin and hair conditions.

• Pick carrier and essential oils that work for your scalp and hair type and address specific problems that you have. For example, almond oil is nourishing and prevents dandruff while argan oil is great for dry frizzy hair.

• Do give your scalp and hair time to absorb all the goodness of the oil. Wait for at least 30 minutes to an hour before shampooing.

• Avoid heat styling your hair after treating your tresses to the best.

Tapotement, also called percussion is a very stimulating style of massage stroke. It involves rhythmic striking of the clients flesh with alternate hands from about an inch away. Here I outline how a masseur should do these stokes and some benefits you get from them. Hacking, Cupping, Beating and Pummelling are all tapotement strokes. This stroke style should be used on fleshy, muscular areas and not on bone. These are the most stimulating of all types of stroke used in Swedish massage. If you are looking to be invigorated with a treatment a lot of tapotement will be used. Generally percussion strokes are used at the end of a massage on a specific area of the body to “wake the body up”.

How To Massage Your Scalp?

1. The Traditional Massage Using Fingers

Since years, this form of massage has been immensely popular to stimulate hair growth.

How to give yourself a fingertip scalp massage:

  • Using light to medium pressure, massage your scalp with your fingers in circular motions.
  • You don’t need any oil for this massage.
  • Make sure that you cover your entire scalp.
  • Do this for 5 minutes, at least 2 times a day.

You can ask your mom or somebody else at home to pass on a helping hand as well. You could even visit a licensed massage therapist, if you have the time for it.

2. Massage While You Wash Your Hair

Give yourself a scalp massage by gently rubbing-in your shampoo while you wash your hair.

How to massage your scalp while washing your hair:

  • Using circular motions, rub your scalp with your shampoo for 5 minutes after application.
  • Make sure you do not scrub hard.
  • Rinse off once you’re done.

3. Brushes And Scalp Massagers

A number of tools are available that can be used to give yourself an effective and soothing head massage. Electric brushes, scalp massagers and other tools are often recommended by dermatologists. These tools can be worked across your scalp the way you use your fingers.

4. Massage With Essential Oils

  • Firstly, set the ambience of your room with candles and soothing music to set your mood for it.

  • Gently rub-in the mixture in circular motions.
  • Leave on for half an hour to one hour and wash off with shampoo.

Essential oils can be strong and should always be diluted in a carrier oil. Conduct a patch test before applying to your scalp, if you have sensitive skin.

How Often Should You Massage Your Scalp?

The ideal frequency depends a lot on why you’re doing it. If you want to improve your hair growth or thickness, massaging your scalp (without oil) with your fingers 2 times everyday is recommended. For relaxation and to relieve stress, you can just massage your scalp whenever you feel like.

Can You Massage Your Scalp Everyday?

Massaging your scalp everyday will enhance blood circulation and can even strengthen your follicles. However, make sure you do it gently and don’t rub vigorously. This can cause your hair to break.

In case you have used an oil while massaging your scalp, make sure you rinse it off within an hour. Oiling your scalp everyday is not recommended as it attracts dirt. Also, using shampoo to rinse off the oil is important. However, shampooing everyday can also remove essential oils and moisture from your scalp. Thus, oiling and shampooing twice a week would be ideal.
