Part 1: Download Offline Maps in Windows 10

Press the WIN + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app. Go to Apps > Offline maps. Click the plus symbol next to Download maps.

Part 2: Use Windows 10 Maps App for Offline Navigation

First, type maps into the Cortana search box and launch Maps app from the search result.

When the Maps app is launched, you have the same search and navigation functionality offline as you do online.

Sometimes you just can’t get an Internet connection. Maybe you’re unlucky enough to be on an airplane with no Wi-Fi or just driving through a section of the United States where connectivity is as infrequent as the next gas station. Sometimes a lack of connectivity isn’t a big deal, but on other occasions it can be a problem—especially if you need a map.

Sure you can get offline maps on your phone, or go old school with a paper version, but viewing a searchable map on a large screen Windows 10 tablet or laptop is a much better way to go.

That’s where the built-in Maps app for Windows 10 comes in.

Note: This tip shows examples for Windows 10 on PCs, but it works exactly the same way on Windows 10 Mobile.

Open the Settings app and go to System > Offline maps. Before we download any maps, let’s make sure you’re saving them where you want. Look for the subheading Storage location (this option may not be available to all devices) and the drop down-menu under “Change where you store offline maps.” By default, it should store your maps in the “C” drive, but if you have a tablet with an SD card, you may prefer to save it on the removable media. Clicking on the drop-down menu will show all possible locations where your maps can be saved.

Now scroll down to the Metered connections subheading. By default this feature is turned off and it’s best to keep it that way. In the off position, offline maps will only download over Wi-Fi or unlimited cellular data. Typically, activating a setting called metered connections would tell your device to only download over Wi-Fi, but it seems to be the reverse here.

Now we’re ready to download some maps. Keep in mind that you can only use the basic version of maps in offline mode. Advanced features such as Streetside (Microsoft’s version of Google’s Street View) are only available when you have an Internet connection.

Click the plus symbol next to Download maps. This opens a new screen listing six continents with available maps—sorry, folks, no road trips to Antarctica with Windows 10.

Windows 10’s new Maps app is handy, but what if you need to find your way around a city on a limited (or nonexistent) data connection? Offline maps, that’s what!

The Maps app has offline maps built in, though not all countries (e.g., Japan) are currently available for download. In offline mode, you’ll be able to search downloaded maps for landmarks and select local hotspots and find directions (including turn-by-turn directions, albeit without real-time traffic data). You will not be able to view 3D Cities or the Aerial overlay, nor will you get Bing information in your searches.

Here’s how to download offline maps:

3. To change where your offline maps are stored, open the Settings menu and go to System > Offline maps > Storage location. If you have multiple hard drives or a partitioned hard drive, you can choose which drive to save your maps on; you won’t be able to choose a specific folder, however.

4. To save data, you may want to turn off Metered connections so that your maps will only download when your device is connected to “free Wi-Fi or unlimited cellular data.” (Automatic map updates, if turned on, will only ever download when you’re not connected to a metered connection.)

Google Maps is an amazing navigational resource and one of the most popular mapping apps in use across the world. Its one weak point is that it requires an active internet connection to work.

One workaround to keep Google Maps working for you when you travel to locations where there’s no cellular data is to download maps for offline viewing.

You can do this on your laptop (if you plan to take your laptop with you traveling), or this is an embedded feature using the Google Maps mobile app for iOS or Android.
