Six-packs? So 2016. Biceps? Give us a break. This year, people are drooling over a muscle you might not have known existed.

The transversus abdominis is that deep v-shaped cut in the abs of bodybuilders. Also known as “sex lines”, the transversus abdominis wraps around your body, supporting your spine, and the muscle’s visible edges are an indicator of a super-strong core and low body fat.

There’s benefit to honing these coveted markers of fitness beyond just looking good. A study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology found that after your shoulders, the transversus abdominis is the next muscle to engage during lifting exercises. Your v-shape might as well be redubbed “lifting lines”.

So how to tone this holy grail of muscle? Simple: by building a strong core (focusing on obliques and lower abs, of course) and torching abdominal body fat.

1. Bastards

– Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
– From the bottom of the squat, place your hands on the floor and kick your legs out behind you into a press-up position.
– Push up until your arms straighten and then tuck in your legs at the bottom of the squat position. Drive upwards through your heels until you are 6 inches off the floor and then repeat.

2. Medicine ball slams

– Stand with your knees slightly bent holding a medicine ball above your head with your arms extended.
– Bend forward at the waist and use your core muscles to slam the ball against the floor about a foot in front of you.
– Let your arms follow through so you don’t fall forward. Catch the ball on its way back up and repeat.

These can be devastatingly sexy, I agree. For those of you who don’t know what a Money Maker is. let me explain. It is a “V” shaped cut in the lower abdominal/pubic region that goes from both sides of the oblique and funnels at angles that sort of point into the groin. They are really cuts from being lean enough to see the hollowed out lines it creates. It can only show of course if you wear your pants low enough to see the effects of all your hard work.

If you have never seen your Money Maker, you will have to experiment to see how long it takes for you to get there for the first time. Take note: some people are born with these lean abdominal region genetics and don’t have to work to see them. These lucky freaks can eat anything and not do any exercising; they have this naturally. For the rest of us, we have to work to get results.

The most important aspects of reaching this goal will be in your food and water intake, what that food consists of, cardiovascular exercise and resistance training if needed.

Your main Money Maker goal is leanness. To be low fat you have to eat low fat. For most men, you will have to be below 10 percent body fat to see your Money Maker. Women can be at a slightly higher percentage and still get the look.

Go get your body fat checked at your local gym. This will give you a good idea on how far you have to go before you get into the 10 ranges. Check with your health care professional before starting any new program of nutrition or exercise for a clean bill of health and the go ahead.

Your food intake will be boring but effective. Eat everything as plain as possible; No fats, wheat, dairy, or fruit. Condiments in moderation are ketchup, mustard, teriyaki, soy sauce, salsa, and non-fat salad dressings. You’ll also have a whey protein shake in the afternoon between meals.

Coffee and Tea are without milk or cream. Use non-fat vanilla soy or oat milk for a try. Diet sodas are fine in moderation – they do not count as water!

Complex carbohydrate starches consist of oatmeal, rice, potatoes, yams and legumes (seeds, grains, beans). Be careful of corn, which is super starchy. Even though it is a vegetable, count it as one of your starch servings. I like to mix 1 cup of corn and 1 cup of steamed rice together as a carb option.

Eat 4-5 small meals a day. Eat complex carbohydrates only once or twice a day. Eat protein and vegetables at all other meals.

A Sample Day

Any of the meals can be switched around to include something from the same category of protein, vegetables and complex carbohydrates. Your food servings will be important. Get used to eating less food.

Each protein serving is about the size of your fist or from 6-8 oz. depending on your weight and size. Complex carbohydrate servings are 1-2 cups. Veggies are a free ticket so eat as many as those as you want within reason.

You will be eating less food than normal and certainly less “fun” food. Just learn to feel hungry. It helps to put it into perspective by realizing it is good thing when you get that empty stomach feeling like you need food. Just learn to feel that way for a while and know it is working!

Drinking a lot of water helps in more than one way. It keeps your system used to flushing so you won’t retain water, it will keep your skin clearer and best of all it also will help with the hunger pangs.

Everyone should drink about 8-10 glasses (cups) every day. Some people drink much more than this as prescribed for their programs.

A lot of people have a hard time drinking their daily allotment of water.

Tips for reluctant water drinkers: Carry it with you. If you have it with you always, you don’t have to go hunting for it. If you are busy and don’t have the time to get it, odds are you won’t drink enough. Buy whatever size container you think you would be comfortable carrying around.

These days it is perfectly acceptable to show up with your own bottle of water in tow. Please note; many sporting events and eating establishments will ask you do down it or dump it, as they of course want you to purchase from their own venders. Put a glass or bottle by your bedside. Vow to actually drink the glass by your bedside every night or when rising in the morning. If you can handle the artificial sweetener, mix in a sugar free product like Crystal Light to your water.

Make a big container for your refrigerator and pour it into smaller bottles to carry with you. I have seen people in the gyms carry an entire gallon jug of water around all mixed with flavor to drink between sets. If you are mixing in flavor, mix it the night before. It tastes a little better after sitting for some hours it seems.

Beware of dark red or any darkly colored mixes. I have seen some nasty spill accidents permanently staining car seats, rugs, clothes (any fabric) and even gym bags! The color has big time staining issues with the dye so make sure you are closing your lids tightly when not drinking.

Always have water with you in your car or on your commute. Bring water with you when you fly or travel. Buy water in bulk at any of those bulk type stores. I like to buy both smaller bottles to carry on the road and the 2.5-gallon container with the spigot for the kitchen. I also live in LA where we all buy bottled water or get filtration systems for the taps. Your area tap water may be fine as is.

It is important to figure out how to drink all of your water so you can cut it down when you want to look leaner. Remember, that Money Maker you are looking for is from being lean.

There are people who can just start “eating clean” and get the results they are looking for. For many more it is necessary to add resistance training for the abdominals. Adding in an exercise program for abdominals will get you deeper cuts for your Money Maker by adding muscle density.

To sculpt your body into the coveted V-shape, the first step is to create the illusion that your waist is smaller. How? By making your upper body bigger. This means building broader shoulders and a wider back. Next? You’ll need a suitably ripped midriff.

And which are the optimal moves for hitting these three vital V-shape areas hard and fast? Personal trainer Christian Finn has all the answers.

How to pack muscle on your shoulders

Standing overhead dumbbell press: 4 sets of 5-8 repetitions (2 minutes rest between sets)

How: Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. With your elbows bent, hold the dumbbells either side of your head. Press them vertically upwards until your arms are completely extended, and then lower them back to the starting position.

Why: This is a great exercise for building strength and size in the deltoids,” says Finn. “Doing the exercise in the standing position also forces your core muscles to work harder.”

Lateral raise: 3 sets of 12-15 repetitions (rest only long enough to do a set with the other arm)

How: Pick a couple of dumbbells and stand with them by your sides, palms facing your body. Keeping your upper body still – that means no swinging – lift the dumbbells out to your side with a slight bend at your elbows. Lift until your arms are parallel to the floor then slowly lower to the start position.

Why: The lateral raise allows for a greater range of motion,” says Finn.

Deadlifts: 5 sets of 5 repetitions (2-3 minutes rest between sets)

How: With your feet underneath the bar, squat down and take hold with a shoulder-width mixed grip (one palm face-up and one palm face-down). Raise the bar by pushing from the heels, and bringing your hips forward rather than pulling with your lower back. “Don’t round your back at the beginning of the lift,” warns Finn. “Doing so will place your back in a fragile position where it’s susceptible to injury. Instead, keep your back ‘neutral’, where the aim is to maintain the natural curvature of the spine.

Why: Use the tried-and-trusted 5 x 5 method – ramping up to your maximum weight by using increasingly heavy loads. For example, let’s say that your five-rep max (the maximum amount of weight you can lift for 5 repetitions) for the deadlift is 150 kilograms. Here’s how you’ll build up to it:

Set 1: 65% of your 5-RM = 97.5kg
Set 2: 75% of your 5-RM = 112.5kg
Set 3: 85% of your 5-RM = 127.5kg
Set 4: 95% of your 5-RM = 142.5kg
Set 5: 100% of your 5-RM = 150kg

Pull-ups: 40 reps in total

How: Grab the handles of the pull-up station with your palms facing away from you and your arms fully extended. Your hands should be around shoulder-width apart. Squeeze your shoulder blades together, exhale and drive your elbows towards your hips to bring your chin above the bar. Lower under control back to the start position.

Why: Aim for a total of 40 reps in as many sets as it takes to get them done, with as short a rest as possible between each set. So you might start off doing sets of 8, then sets of 6, followed by sets of 3 as your lats and arms become fatigued. Aim to gradually reduce the amount of time it takes to do 40 reps. “Remember that form is crucial,” says Finn. “Don’t sacrifice technique just to get a few extra reps in. Take some extra rest instead.” Research in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that a wide grip (hands spaced roughly one-and-a-half times shoulder width apart) with the palms facing forwards is the best way to work your lats.

To make your waist narrower, both regular exercise and your nutritional regime are crucial. “Doing endless abdominal exercises will not burn fat away from your abs!” counsels Finn. “Abdominal fat is stored energy. To get rid of it, you need to burn more energy (calories) than you eat – and the fact is that crunches and sit-ups don’t burn enough calories to make much of a difference to the appearance of your waist and stomach.”

Ab-wheel rollouts

Once you have lost the beer gut, however, you’ll still need some moves to coax out your core. One of our favourite ab exercises, mainly because it gives us that satisfying ache in our abs the following day, is the ab-wheel rollout.

Get on all fours, holding an ab wheel in both hands, (if you don’t have one, use a small barbell with a towel wrapped around it). Roll forward, keeping your back straight, knees on the floor and extending your arms in front of you, then tighten your abs to pull yourself back to the starting position.

Clipboard history stores a maximum of 25 entries, with the oldest items disappearing as new ones appear. Also, unless an item is pinned to the Clipboard, the Clipboard history list will reset every time you restart your computer or device.

No bad hair days here.

We all have a bad hair story. Maybe it’s accidentally giving yourself a set of baby bangs that were supposed to be Bardot-worthy fringe, or perhaps it’s going too scissor-happy when picking off stray split ends and ending up with a lopsided bob. That’s why it’s always best to leave these things to the professionals, at least 99% of the time.

But if you’re too busy to make it to the salon this month or simply want to refresh your strands between appointments, a DIY haircut is technically an option. But, make no mistake, it’s a proceed-with-caution situation, and we’re here to help you avoid any split-decision, Chardonnay-fueled hair disasters. Follow along as we take you through how to trim your bangs, how to get rid of split ends, and how to cut your own hair.

Here are a few tips to get us started:

1. First, invest in a pair of professional hair scissors. Those blunt craft scissors aren’t going to cut it, sister. If you’ll be trimming your own hair a few times a year, just go ahead and buy a pair your stylist would approve of.

2. Second, decide whether or not to dampen your strands. Typically, you’ll want to dampen your hair before cutting to ensure precision. But for curly or textured hair, it’s a bit trickier. A dry cut is more difficult for amateur cutters, but helps you see how your curls are reacting to the cut. Plus, taking off an inch of curly hair when it is wet is not the same thing as when it is dry, trust us on that.

3. Lastly, have a few hair ties on hand and a hard-working brush.

How to trim your bangs

Because once that fringe gets into our vision, it’s over. Time to trim. There’s nothing dangerous about giving your bangs a refresh in between salon visits, but keep a few things in mind. (Hint: No water, please.)

“Always trim your bangs dry and styled as you wear them. If you like to round brush your bangs so they have a little lift, round brush them before you trim them. This will help to prevent them from getting too short,” Texas-based stylist Chris Jones told us.

As far as the actual cutting goes, Jones recommends to “point cut into the bang rather than cutting a straight line.” This will avoid a super blunt finish and give you more control as you trim the ends.

How to get rid of split ends

We can get on board with getting rid of split ends between salon visits. The sooner they’re gone, the less time they have to travel up the hair shaft, reeking havoc as they go. The trick here is to keep a level head. You’re going to want to go scissor-happy. Resist, resist! The goal is to remove just the individual split ends, not any length.

How to cut your own hair

Ah, the coup de grace. Things can go very wrong here, so proceed with caution. If you’re looking to trim your hair, or even cut off a few inches of hair, there’s one method that streamlines the process enough for first-timers: The Ponytail Method.

1. To start, you’ll secure your hair into a high ponytail. (Remember, it should be dampened and brushed as straight and smoothly as you can.)

2. Take the ponytail and pull upwards on the hair tie until it’s only an inch or two away from the ends. If you have a lot of layering, you can secure extra elastics every few inches instead until you’ve reached that same point to keep things clean.

3. Now, cut just a half inch to an inch at the ends, straight across, and then point cut vertically to give texture and get rid of bluntness.

4. Take it down and assess your work.

Tip: If you start with a high ponytail, you’ll get a softer U-shape in the back. If you want to frame your face a little more, start with the ponytail as close to your hairline as possible.
