The free online diary monkkee offers you the safest place for your thoughts. A comprehensive security concept protects your content against unauthorized access. And this is how it works:

As soon as content created by you is saved, it is directly encrypted on your computer, i.e. even before its leaves your device and is transferred to the server via the Internet. With this end-to-end encryption approach monkkee set themselves apart from other competitors who do not encrypt user data at all or only provide server-side encryption.

How to keep your diary a secret

The decryption key for monkkee is your password, which you must enter each time you log on. The encryption method used is AES-256. Initially developed for military purposes, this highly secure encoding technology is nowadays used by governments, institutions and banks to encrypt top-secret information.

The encrypted data is transferred directly between your device and the server. For this purpose, monkkee uses an additional SSL-based encryption technology. That way, no one can eavesdrop on the transfer.

Only you can decrypt your entries now, since you are the only one to know the password. This means that even the system administrators of monkkee cannot read your data. It also means that it is not possible to hand data over to government authorities, as is currently being discussed in the media. As a side effect, it is not possible to restore your password in case you forget it. So always remember your password – there is no spare key!

If you have any further questions regarding security, check out our FAQs or send a message to monkkee using the contact form.

Maybe you’ve already noticed that we don’t take advertising or membership fees here. Neither will we ever touch or monetize your personal data, as the protection of your privacy is our top priority.

In fact, monkkee is funded exclusively through donations from its users and through the ongoing support of the monkkee founders. monkkee was born out of passion for the cause and the desire to create great software. It is the work of a few passionate individuals, not one of large internet companies. With its client-side encryption, we’re convinced that monkkee is a unique product and we want to make the software accessible to any person wishing to use it.

How to keep your diary a secret

Our long-term goal is for monkkee to be fully community-driven and pay for itself. To make this work, we depend on regular donations. The more donations we receive, the more secure monkkee’s future. Donations are used to run and maintain the software, develop new features and, last but not least, pay the bills for our server hosting costs, which have increased considerably since our start in 2013 due to the growing user base and increased storage needs.

We want to shape monkkee’s future together with you. As a crowd, we are strong and can compete with commercial providers. If you have never made a donation before, please consider helping us with a small contribution. We are grateful for every single donation we receive, no matter how small or big!

Have you ever felt that there are a lot of things in life that you just bottled up within yourself? Always wanted to talk to someone or a secret companion about your life but you are too shy to do so? Want to keep your daily memories safe somewhere but not sure what to do? If you have ever thought about any of these questions, read on to find out why you should keep a diary.

What is a diary?

Diaries are a record of entries that describe your life over a period of time typically on a daily basis. A journal is a place where you can be honest with yourself and jot down your thoughts and reflections from things that happened around you; free from outside judgement and criticism. In a diary, you can record things like your observations, experiences, likes or dislikes, events, adventures and many more. Anything that you wish to record can be written in a diary.

How to keep your diary a secret

Why do people keep diaries?

Much more than the love of writing, people keep diaries for various reasons. Here are some:

1. Express Thoughts

Diaries are your secret companion and a place where you can be honest with yourself. You can vent out bottled up emotions and toxic thoughts that stayed with you. There are times you may feel that you cannot be entirely honest with someone. By writing in a diary and treating it as if you are talking to a close friend, your thoughts and secrets stay with you forever.

2. Track Sleep Routine

How to keep your diary a secret

Sleep is a vital component of human health. Dream journal or sleep journal can be useful to see your sleep pattern, and analyze dreams and nightmares. A sleep journal tracks your rest and finds a sleep pattern namely: monophasic (sleeps once per day), biphasic or sometimes referred to siesta (typically for 8 or so hours a night) or polyphasic (sleeps throughout the day). The amount of sleep a person needs changes with their age. A sleep journal tells you whether you are getting enough rest based on your age and daily activities.

Keeping a daily dream journal can also be an easy and fun way to help you identify recurring patterns, trends and dream symbols, as well as improving your ability to continually remember more dream details, and pointing you towards an aspect of your life that may need some extra attention.

3. Keep Memories Safe

Memories fade with time, thus noting down the things that happened in life could be an excellent way to keep your memories safe. We all have to agree that not all memories are positive, but wouldn’t you have to admit that the negative ones are also the ones that make us stronger as we learn from our past mistakes? Thus, writing down adverse events may not be as bad as we thought.

4. Pen down & Celebrate Achievements

How to keep your diary a secret

Having a bucket list within your diary can also be something satisfying to look back on, especially when you have achieved something that you have always wanted. Have you ever had something that you have always wanted, but you know that it will take time to accomplish this dream? You can also track your progress in your diary. This may also help you to reflect on and think about the next step you should take to achieve your goal too!

The Different Types of Diaries

While diaries give you an opportunity to express yourself, you can use them for other purposes as well! Some of them could be:

How to keep your diary a secret

Gibbs: Before you start this diary, I’m going to lay down a few rules for how it can be kept.

Camilla: What are the rules?

Gibbs: First, your diary will not be a secret diary. I might pick it up and read it whenever I choose. Second, the diary cannot take away from the other writing you do, especially letter writing.

Camilla: Why can’t it be a secret diary?

Gibbs: Secret diaries encourage the worst and darkest sorts of thoughts a person has. Secret diaries are often filled with complaints, insults, and grievances with others. Why? A secret diary needs a reason to be secret, which means you will fill it with the sorts of thoughts you don’t want other people hearing, which either means confessing your own sins or the sins of others. A diary is no place to confess your sins, though, because a diary can’t forgive you. And it’s no place to catalogue the sins of others.

Camilla: But if I already have those thoughts about others, how does writing them down make them any worse?

Gibbs: Writing things down formalizes them, confirms them, solidifies them. Writing down your thoughts takes time, and so you linger over all the unsavory thoughts you don’t want others to hear. It is one thing to have those thoughts, but another thing to dwell on them. If you have a mean or nasty thought about someone, there’s no need to make them permanent by recording them and coming back to them later.

Camilla: What should I write in my diary, then?

Gibbs: Try to keep your entries short and worth rereading later. There’s really no point in writing, “I failed a math test today and we had chicken provençal for dinner.” Who cares? Use a diary to record your thoughts on how the world works—on how boys work, how girls work, how teachers work. Try to keep your observations to a sentence or two.

Camilla: I don’t get it. How do I keep my observations to a sentence or two?

Gibbs: Think about your teachers for a moment.

Gibbs: What do teachers like?

Camilla: When the students obey.

Gibbs: And why do they like that?

Camilla: Because it makes them feel like they’re good at their jobs.

Gibbs: So, “Teachers want students to obey because it makes them feel like they’re doing their jobs well.” There you go. That’s a fine little diary entry.

Camilla: Is that really what diaries sound like?

Gibbs: That sort of diary keeping has been done for many thousands of years. Really, that’s what any collection of proverbs is. Blaise Pascal wrote a book called Pensées, which is a diary of observations on the world. Some of his thoughts are about science or math, but a good deal of that book is just little things he notices about human nature. The sort of diary you’re thinking of—with complaints about people from school, and notes about what you wore—is a relatively modern invention. It requires cheap literacy and even cheaper paper in order to justify writing, “Brooklyn was a brat at school today and I ate peas for dinner.” Back when paper was expensive, no one was wasting it on such petty thoughts. That sort of diary keeping also requires the sort of self-obsession that has only been common since the French Revolution.

Camilla: What do you mean “self-obsession”?

Gibbs: Well, think about the other writing you do. What’s the difference between a diary and a letter?

Camilla: Somebody else reads a letter.

Gibbs: Right. And the fact that somebody else reads a letter effects what you write—but how so?

Camilla: You don’t tell them you had peas for dinner. They don’t care.

Gibbs: Yes, and when you write for others, you not only have to say things that will interest them, you have to say those things in an elegant, compelling way. When you write someone else, you have a reason to write well. When we write others, we’re ashamed to say petty, stupid things—and we’re especially ashamed to say those things in petty, stupid ways. It’s good we’re ashamed of such things. It keeps us from doing them. But when you write things that only you’re going to read, you lose a reason to be clear and compelling. That’s why I don’t want the diary to take the place of the other writing you’re doing. The sort of writing you do for others is more important and naturally less self-indulgent. Others will hold you to a far higher standard than you’ll hold yourself.

Camilla: Does this mean I can read your diary?

Gibbs: Ugh, that thing. No. That book has been sitting on the shelf for three years now, and I think I only ever filled in a few lines of it. But everything I’ve just told you I learned through experience. Besides, there are a thousand stories out there about secret diaries, and everybody knows why secret diaries are secret, and the sort of thoughts people write in them. A few years ago I saw a movie called First Reformed, which is quite good, and it’s about a minister who keeps a diary for a year and his whole life falls apart because of it. He writes down all of his sins and all his wretched thoughts, and as the year goes on and on, he finds it harder to accept forgiveness for his sins because he keeps pouring over them. He keeps returning to his wretched thoughts, as well, and the diary simply confirms for him—every time he pages through it—that he’s a terrible person. In the end, he kills himself.

Gibbs: The banal approach most modern people take to writing leads them to believe that keeping a diary is good because writing is always good and because expressing yourself is always good. Writing is not a virtue, neither is expressing yourself. Writing good things is a virtue, and expressing yourself elegantly is a skill, but very few diaries inspire such things.

How to keep your diary a secret

Today’s Wonder of the Day was inspired by Sophie. Sophie Wonders, “Who is Anne Frank?” Thanks for WONDERing with us, Sophie!

Today’s Wonder of the Day is about a diary. Does that seem strange? After all, aren’t most diaries kept secret? Perhaps that’s true, but this diary has become quite famous. It was written by Anne Frank.

On August 1, 1944, Anne Frank made the last entry in her diary. This young girl’s story has inspired millions of people over the years. Her writings have certainly stood the test of time.

Born on June 12, 1929, Anne Frank was a German teenager. Her family was forced into hiding in the Netherlands when Hitler’s Nazi party took over Germany. The Frank family feared for their lives. They knew they would be targeted by the Nazis for being Jewish.

The Frank family hid from the Nazis in a secret annex at the back of a warehouse and up a set of steep, narrow stairs. Eventually, they were betrayed to the Nazis and arrested. In March 1945, Anne Frank died of typhus in a concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. She was only 15 years old.

On her 13th birthday, Anne Frank received a diary as a present. While her family was in hiding, Frank wrote in her diary. Her writings revealed a lot about the horrors of war. It gave a glimpse into the ordinary struggles of a teenager during World War II.

At first, Anne wrote her diary only for herself. Writing became a way for her to express the emotions she felt while her family was hiding from the Nazis.

One day in 1944, Anne heard a radio announcement from Gerrit Bolkestein, a Dutch government official. He said that he hoped one day to publish eyewitness accounts of the suffering caused by the Nazis. Anne decided that she would publish a book based on her diary after the war. Sadly, Anne did not survive to see this happen.

Miep Gies, one of the people who had helped her family while they were in hiding, saved the diary. She gave it to Otto Frank, Anne’s father, when he returned from the concentration camps.

Otto published his daughter’s diary in 1947 under the title “Het Achterhuis” (English: “The Secret Annex ”). Later, it was renamed “The Diary of a Young Girl.” It has been translated into more than 60 different languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.

Many diaries hold personal information and are meant to be kept secret. However, they often become the sources for memoirs , autobiographies , and biographies. Diary entries can sometimes seem uninteresting—like notes about the weather or everyday events. However, such entries can later provide priceless glimpses into the past.

Many people still write in diaries every day. To some, though, putting pen to paper can sometimes seem old-fashioned. Today’s blogs and posts on social media sites might become the diary entries of tomorrow! Remember, what you post online is out there for everyone to see. If you want to keep your diary a secret, you might want to stick to pen and paper!

What stops me from journaling is the fear of someone reading my entries. I've considered keeping a 'digital journal' and saving it on my computer, but I prefer to physically write with pen and paper, doodle, etc. Do you any of you keep your journal private? How do you ensure that it's not lost and/or not read by anyone else?

If it's small, you can put it in a coat pocket and hang the coat up in your wardrobe. Otherwise, you can put it at the bottom of a junk drawer, under your bed, at the bottom of a clothes hamper, etc.

To be honest, I've been keeping very personal diaries and just leaving the journal on my desk with the elastic band done up around it. My family is respectful and I know they haven't pried so I don't worry about it anymore. But it definitely depends on who you live with.

A couple of years ago when I moved countries I lost my journal. I got incredibly anxious for months. Since we gave away/sold a bunch of stuff I remember I called some of my friends and ask them if they got it somehow, but no luck. It was terrible. I felt so vulnerable, sometimes even ashamed, even though there was nothing bad in there, I just felt embarrassed.

Luckily I don't need to mind my husband now, he doesn't snoop around. When I was younger I tried to keep it in a secret place or hiding it at plain sight. I sometimes used the same type of notebook I used for my classes, so no one would come near it.

Now, I am only concerned about losing it again. I try to keep it on my desk and not mixed with all the empty journals I have. I am also slightly more careful about my writing, without sacrificing any of the freedom my own journal gives me. I try not to put any pictures that show my face or my family's faces (I do use those pictures in my bullet journal, though). I use mostly generic nature pictures I take that remind me of something or evoke a particular feeling.

I also came to peace with the fact that if I ever lose it again it will be OK. Most likely it will not be found by someone who knows me, and even if they did, I do not have to feel ashamed for having my own feelings and thoughts.

If you're still living with your parents, maybe try hiding it at plain sight, or maybe keep it behind your night stand or something like that?

Don't let that fear stop you. At least start with something not so personal, so you can get the hang of it 🙂
