This page describes how to integrate AppDynamics and Splunk. This integration provides a single, cohesive view of data and allows you to:

  • Launch Splunk searches using auto-populated queries from the AppDynamics Console based on criteria such as time ranges and the node IP address.
  • Push notifications on policy violations and events from AppDynamics to Splunk.
  • Mine performance data from AppDynamics using the Controller REST API and push it into Splunk.

Configure Splunk Integration

  1. Log in to the Controller UI as an administrator.
  2. Select Settings >Administration .

Select Integration > Splunk.

Click the Enabled checkbox.

For the URL, enter the Splunk URL and port number.

Launch a Splunk Search from AppDynamics

You can launch a search of Splunk logs for a specific time frame associated with a transaction snapshot from several places in AppDynamics.

To launch a Splunk search:

  • You need Splunk credentials. You will only enter your credentials the first time that you launch a Splunk search. Your credentials are cached by the browser after the first login.
  • Ensure the Splunk Server is running.
  • Configure your browser to allow popups.

If you do not see a login prompt at first login, either your browser is blocking the Splunk login popup or the Splunk Server is not running.

You can access the Search Splunk option from the node dashboard or the business transaction dashboard.

What Happens When A Splunk Engineer Gets Hooked on Data

Soon after diving into the Splunk world, I became a data geek. I was hooked on Splunking all the things. I wanted to know what the data could tell me, I wanted to see what Splunk could show me through custom visualizations, I wanted to analyze everything!

After trying a few things, such as Splunking data on Montgomery County traffic and crime , I learned that it’s possible to Splunk your car. and that’s exactly what I decided to do. Here is a little bit about how I Splunked my car, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Before continuing, I should mention that I was able to complete this because of a third-party device called Automatic (www.automatic.com). Automatic is an adapter that plugs into a car’s diagnostic (OBD-II) port, which is typically located under the dash. It unlocks the data from your car’s onboard computer. With this device, I have all the logs from my car being stored, and I set Splunk up to utilize Automatic’s API to bring in all the data.

The Splunk app store is filled with hundreds of free custom apps that either Splunk or another developer built. For almost anything you can think to Splunk, there is likely a solution online. Whether it is a Splunk app that contains pre-built visualizations (that you can download from splunkbase.splunk.com), or a written solution found on Splunk’s Q&A, you can find it!

With all my car data now in Splunk, I created custom visualizations and alerts. One example: I can map out all my drives onto a Google-like map and zoom into each one, clicking on it to show further details about that drive.

The car data contains information about how many miles you drive and what your gas efficiency is during your drives. This allows you to calculate exactly how much money every drive costs. I used this information to create a Splunk alerts, which sends me an email as soon as I finished each drive. This email includes information such as the start time, end time, start address, end address, total duration, total fuel used, total fuel cost, average mpg, distance, number of hard accelerations, number of hard brakes, time spent driving over 70mph, 75mph, and 80mph, and much more.

Also, anytime the engine light comes on in my car, it creates a log and then comes into Splunk. These logs from the engine light contain helpful information such as the error code and description of the issue, so I can create another alert that sends an email to my mechanic with the information every time my engine light comes on. My mechanic can then let me know if this is something that I need to bring the vehicle in for, or if I can simply ignore it and turn the engine light off myself (with the Automatic device/app).

What you will need:

  • A computer
  • A car with an Automatic device (automatic.com)
    • The device that I have is from their previous generation device, before they had Automatic Lite and Automatic Pro. All of the different device versions will work for this project.

    Steps to download Splunk and install the Automatic app:

    • Go to splunk.com and download Splunk enterprise for your computer
    • Install Splunk Enterprise onto your computer
    • Access Splunk from a web browser at http://localhost:8000
    • Login to Splunk (default credentials will be admin:changeme) and update your password
    • Go to Manage Apps
      • If on the default launcher/homepage, click the gear icon in the top left next to ‘Apps’
      • If on another page, you will see a dropdown in the top left next to the Splunk logo, click the dropdown and then click ‘Manage Apps’
      • The first app listed should be the Automatic app by the author, Burch Simon.

      Steps to get access token from Automatic (for API):

      • Navigate to developer.automatic.com.
      • Log in with the same credentials you use for Automatic’s Dashboards to log into the developer site.
      • Select “My Apps” and fill out the form. Use http://www.splunk.com as your app and follow their instructions for obtaining access to their REST API endpoints.
      • It takes a few hours for the Automatic developer team to register your App and send you an email with the relevant information to get started.
        • For me, this was very quick

        Steps to finish Splunk setup:

        • Log back into your Splunk instance.
        • Click on Settings -> Data Inputs -> Automatic Car Data
        • Select the ‘New’ button
        • Add your access token to the input asking for it
        • Click Next -> Save to save this data input

        It may take a couple of minutes for Splunk to reach out to Automatic’s API and start bringing in all your drive logs. You can watch them come in by going to the Automatic app (top left dropdown by the Splunk logo) and clicking on ‘Search’ in the main menu. This will automatically perform the search for you to see your car logs, you can also switch the time picker on the right to ‘Real-time All time’ to watch them come into Splunk in real time.

        Once you see your car data coming into Splunk, you can click over to the Launchpad, Geographic, and Fuel dashboards on the main menu to check out some pre-built dashboards and visualizations.

        There are a few cases where a quick lab Splunk install can work to your advantage. One instance would be when you have log files (or anything else that Splunk will ingest) that you need to quickly investigate, or to demonstrate for someone else how useful Splunk is for this sort of work. Another case is when you have data you need to onboard and want to experiment with configurations and apps to determine what you should deploy in production.

        What should you be aware of when building this system?

        When building this type of system, assume a very short lifetime – use a VM (or a cloud instance), test what you need to, and then throw the system away. This lab is intended to get Splunk up and running as quickly as possible, without focusing on configuration best practices or deployment strategies you should consider for a permanent deployment.

        Note: If you’re reading this, you’ll probably want to play around with Splunk for a bit in a temporary environment.

        Linux VM

        For this lab, I’ve chosen a Ubuntu 16.04 instance hosted by Linode. These steps will be similar regardless of what distribution or provider you choose – you will just need SSH access to the Linux host to get started. The free tier offered by Amazon AWS is a great way to get started without having any upfront cost when experimenting.

        Obviously, the low-cost cloud instances will be well below the minimum specifications for Splunk. As long as you are only working with a (very) small set of data, Splunk will still function in this type of environment, but you will likely notice degraded performance if you try and do any significant work on the system. That said, even the smallest cloud instances have been sufficient for most of the quick testing I have needed to do, but I tend to go with a larger machine when needing to work with anything more than a single sample file or two.

        For this lab, the instance I’m using has a single CPU core and 2gb of RAM, with 30gb of SSD-backed storage. Definitely not something that should end up being your production Splunk instance!

        3… 2… 1… GO! Time to install Splunk!

        In this tutorial I will be showing you how to go from Zero to Splunk in just a couple mins. I’ll walk you through the steps and by the end you will know how to install Splunk on a Linux VM. Below you will find the video as well as the associated steps.

        Step 1:

        Before getting started make sure you confirm that you can SSH into the Linux system where you will be running the installation. In this instance, I have logged in as root directly.

        Note: Splunk is designed to not need to run as root (and generally should not be run as root), since all of the ports it needs by default are above 1024 (this is why the web interface runs on 8000) out of the box.

        Step 2:

        Go to www.splunk.com and click the “Free Splunk” link in the upper right corner. Sign up for an account if you do not already have one; if you do have a Splunk account, click the login button and proceed to sign in.

        Step 3:

        On the download page, choose the free download for Splunk Enterprise. This is the version of Splunk that you install on your own operating system.

        Step 4:

        Since we are installing this on Linux, click on Linux and then download the .tgz installer tarball.

        Step 5:

        The .tgz will begin downloading automatically (and you will receive an email, congratulating you for downloading Splunk). However, to save us from having to transfer the installer to your Linux machine, click the Download via Command Line (wget) link and copy it to the clipboard.

        Step 6:

        In your Linux machine, cd into the /tmp directory using the cd /tmp command. Then paste the wget string copied from Splunk’s site. This will result in the installer being placed at /tmp/splunk--Linux-x86_64.tgz. This type of file is commonly referred to as a tarball.

        Step 7:

        Navigate to the /opt directory with the command cd /opt. Then extract the Splunk executable with the tar command. This will include the path to and complete name of the file you just downloaded. In my example, this looks like this: tar -zxf /tmp/splunk-7.0.0-c8a78efdd40f-Linux-x86_64.tgz

        Note: Your file name will likely be different than mine since you will probably be using a newer version.

        Tip: The Linux Bash shell supports tab completion, which is a great timesaver. You only need to type enough of a command or path to unambiguously identify the command or file you are looking to use. For example, if there are no other Splunk tarballs in the /tmp directly, you will probably only need to type /tmp/s followed by to have the shell automatically expand the rest of the name. Try it for yourself when you’re doing this step! Learn this trick and you will save a ton of time and look like a pro right away.

        Step 8:

        Now it’s time to start Splunk. Invoke the command /opt/splunk/bin/splunk start –accept-license and watch the output as your brand new Splunk installation comes to life.

        After the app is installed, a new icon showing the VMware Carbon Black EDR logo appears on the left-hand side of the Splunk front page. Clicking the logo brings you to the default dashboard of the Carbon Black EDR for the Splunk app. Additional dashboards include an overview of endpoint status, including a breakdown of OS and sensor versions, as well as data on the latest new binaries seen in the environment.

        The Process Search, Binary Search, and Sensor Search dashboards in the VMware Searhc menu allow you to perform Carbon Black searches directly from within Splunk. These dashboards use the respective custom commands to perform the search through the REST API without ingesting the data into Splunk. The results are displayed on the same screen. You can also use Carbon Black search features using custom search commands.

        Using Custom Commands

        The Splunk app includes three custom commands to perform searches on the Carbon Black datastore from Splunk: binarysearch , processsearch , and sensorsearch . These three commands have corresponding views in the Carbon Black app: Binary Search, Process Search, and Sensor Search.

        To use the custom commands in your Splunk searches, first make sure that you’re using the Carbon Black EDR context by invoking the search through the Splunk > Search menu in the Carbon Black EDR app. You can use any of the search commands by appending the Carbon Black EDR query as a “query” parameter. For example:

        sends an API request to Carbon Black EDR to query for all sensors that have reported an IP address of 172.22.5.141. The result of this query can be piped through to other Splunk commands for aggregation, visualization, and correlation.

        To update the base EDR index for macros and eventtypes, change [edr_base_index] in eventtypes.conf .

        Using Saved Searches

        Several example reports and saved searches are included in this app release. You can find a full list of these searches in Settings > Searches, Reports, and Alerts menu item from the Carbon Black EDR app. None of these are run or scheduled to run by default, and some will not return any data unless certain data types (netconns, procstarts, etc.) are forwarded via the Carbon Black Event Forwarder into Splunk.

        Using Adaptive Response Alert Actions

        The Carbon Black EDR app for Splunk now integrates with Splunk’s Adaptive Response framework and provides four Adaptive Response Alert Actions:

        • Isolate Endpoint
        • Un-Isolate Endpoint
        • Ban MD5 Hash
        • Kill Process

        Each of these Actions can be performed either on an ad-hoc basis on a notable event surfaced in Enterprise Security, or on an automated basis as part of a Splunk Correlation Search. In addition, the Isolate Endpoint and Ban MD5 Hash actions can be invoked based on search results from any Splunk search, as long as a field is present that provides a Device ID (for Isolate Endpoint) or an MD5 hash (for Ban Hash). Currently, only events that are surfaced via the Carbon Black Event Forwarder can be used as input for the Kill Process alert action.

        Using Workflow Actions

        Workflow Actions allow you to pivot into Carbon Black searches from standardized fields. The Carbon Black EDR app for Splunk includes Workflow Actions with context about events in any Splunk view, including Enterprise Security’s Notable Event table.

        To perform a workflow action, drilldown into an event and click the Event Actions button. The available workflow actions from this app are displayed. You can pivot directly from a field if a workflow action is available for that field.

        The following Workflow Actions are included:

        • Sensor Information by IP: find detailed information about a Carbon Black EDR sensor given an IP address field.
        • Binary Search by MD5 hash: retrieve context around a binary that has a specific MD5 file hash.
        • Search for Processes contacting IP: retrieve a list of processes from Carbon Black EDR that have made a connection to or received a connection from the given IP address.
        • Search for Processes related to MD5 hash: retrieve a list of processes from Carbon Black EDR that have links to the given MD5 hash (a loaded module/DLL, the executable itself, a file write to an executable with the given MD5 hash).
        • Search for Processes contacting Domain: retrieve a list of processes from Carbon Black EDR that have made a connection to or received a connection from the given domain name.
        • Search for Processes related to filename: retrieve a list of processes from Carbon Black EDR that refer to the given filename (written/modified the file, etc.).

        In addition, for events that were generated by Carbon Black EDR (forwarded into Splunk via the Carbon Black Event Forwarder), additional Workflow Actions provide deep links into the Carbon Black EDR console directly from the event in Splunk, where applicable. These deep links require the Carbon Black Event Forwarder to be configured to generate these links at event generation time (see the Carbon Black Event Forwarder configuration file for more details).

        Diagnostics Generation

        Please include a support diagnostic file when creating a support ticket. Use the following command to generate the file.

        Application logs can be accessed through Splunk. To start a new search, open the Launcher menu from the HERE platform portal and click on Logs (see menu item 3 in Figure 1).

        The Splunk home page opens and you can begin by entering a search term and starting the search. For more information on performing a Splunk search, see the official Search Tutorial.

        One limitation of starting this way is that you have access to all of the log data for all pipelines. Thus, you will have to specify a search term that includes identification of the pipeline or job of interest. Alternately, you can access a running pipeline’s logs directly as shown in Figure 3. This is done from the platform portal information display for a running pipeline.

        Note: Single log line size limit

        Any single log line exceeding the allowed limit of 900 KB will be discarded and will not be available in Splunk.

        Pipeline Log Index

        Pipeline logs are stored in the olp- < realm > _common index. For example, if your account is in the olp-example realm, your index would be olp-example_common . You can search for this by adding the following string to your Splunk search query:

        Troubleshoot Pipeline Issues

        You can use application logs to debug and troubleshoot pipeline issues.

        During the pipeline setup (before it is submitted to be run), the pipeline service does not produce any logs. Any feedback is provided only through the Pipeline service APIs.

        Once a pipeline job is submitted, the errors can happen in two different scnearios: before and after the pipeline has started running.

        Before the Pipeline Starts Running

        There are a number of steps that the pipeline goes through before it actually starts running. Any errors at this point are not attached to a job. These errors are first captured internally by the platform, and then pushed out to your appropriate Splunk index. Only error logs related to your pipeline can appear in your specific Splunk index.

        To search your Splunk index for these logs, use the pipeline or pipeline version UUID.

        Once the Pipeline Starts Running

        Once the pipeline starts running, there is a corresponding job reported in Pipeline Version Details on the HERE platform portal and Pipelines API responses. Each pipeline job is assigned a link to the logs for that job run.

        Note: Time Window Expiration

        The default time window built into the link expires after some time. For example, the default link may be pulling logs from the last 15 minutes. This link does not work on the next day.

        To search for these logs again, select a time window using Splunk. You can do this through a drop-down list option at the top right of the Splunk UI.

        Fastly’s Real-Time Log Streaming feature for [email protected] services can send log files to Splunk. Splunk is a web-based log analytics platform used by developers and IT teams.

        Prerequisites

        To use Splunk as a logging endpoint, you’ll need to enable the HTTP Event Collector (HEC), create a token, and enable it. Follow the instructions on Splunk’s website:

          . . . for tokens used by Fastly to stream logs.

        You’ll need to remember the HEC token and find the URL for your collector. The URL structure depends on the type of Splunk instance you’re using. Use the table below to find the URL structure for your Splunk instance.

        While logged in to Splunk, you can find the hostname for the URL in your web browser’s address bar.

        Adding Splunk as a logging endpoint

        After you’ve created a Splunk account and obtained your customer token, follow these instructions to add Splunk as a logging endpoint for Fastly [email protected] services:

        Our developer documentation provides more information about logging with [email protected] code written in Rust, AssemblyScript, and JavaScript.

        • In the Name field, enter the name you specified in your [email protected] code. For example, in our Rust code example, the name is my_endpoint_name .
        • In the URL field, enter the URL to send data to (e.g., https://:8088/services/collector/event/1.0 ).
        • In the Token field, enter the token for the HEC.
        • From the Use TLS controls, optionally select whether or not to enable TLS. When you select Yes, additional TLS fields appear.
        • In the TLS hostname field, optionally enter a hostname to verify the server’s certificate. This should be one of the Subject Alternative Name (SAN) fields for the certificate. Common Names (CN) are not supported. If you are using Splunk Enterprise see the Splunk Enterprise section below for more information.
        • In the TLS CA certificate field, enter the CA certificate used to verify that the origin’s certificate is valid. It must be in PEM format. This is not required if your origin-side TLS certificate is signed by a well-known CA. See the using TLS CA certificates section for more information.
        • In the TLS client certificate field, optionally copy and paste the TLS client certificate used to authenticate to the origin server. The TLS client certificate you upload must be in PEM format and must be accompanied by a client certificate. A TLS client certificate allows your server to authenticate that Fastly is performing the connection. This field only appears when you select Yes from the Use TLS menu.
        • In the TLS client key field, optionally copy and paste the TLS client key used to authenticate to the backend server. The TLS client key you upload must be in PEM format and must be accompanied by a TLS client certificate. A TLS client key allows your server to authenticate that Fastly is performing the connection.
        • In the Maximum logs field, optionally enter the maximum number of logs to append to a batch, if non-zero.
        • In the Maximum bytes field, optionally enter the maximum size of the log batch, if non-zero.

        Using TLS CA certificates

        If you’ve installed your own TLS certificate in Splunk Enterprise or Splunk Cloud, you’ll need to provide the corresponding CA certificate.

        For Splunk Cloud, the default set up has the following CA certificate:

        Splunk Enterprise

        Splunk Enterprise provides a set of default certificates, but we strongly recommend you configure your own certificates for your Fastly logging endpoint rather than relying on the default certificates. The certificates provided by Splunk Enterprise only specify a Common Name (CN), which cannot be used to properly verify the identity of the Splunk host presenting the certificate. Additionally, these certificates are less secure because the same root certificate is available in every Splunk Enterprise download. We encourage you to maintain the best possible security posture by configuring your own certificates rather than relying on the default certificates. The Splunk documentation provides a guide for configuring your own certificates.

        Configuration and change management approach For Splunk initiated changes, maintenance is performed at most once per month and Customers will receive notice of Routine Maintenance by email at least 48 hours in advance. You can request an alternate time within the Routine Maintenance window if required. For Customer initiated changes, the maintenance can be performed regularly. Customer’s will receive email notice when such maintenance is starting and when complete.
