This post will discuss how you can upgrade the battery/battery-life of your RC car to increase the running time of the car.

This thanksgiving I bought a 6.4-Volt Ford Raptor truck from Walmart for $15 (on sale) for my 3 year old son, who loves to chase RC cars. In the beginning I was very happy with its performance and speed. But Soon I realized that it had such a short life time of 15 to 20 minutes, which was very disappointing for my son.

Step 1: Original Battery

So I thought may be something was wrong with the battery because this was such a big truck (1:15). I opened the truck and this is what I found out (image 4). The blue thing in the image 4 was the battery powering this truck- a 6.4V 350mAh rechargeable battery. So it explained the short life time

Step 2: Look for the Additional/replaement Battery

I decided to increase the lifetime by adding a bigger battery to it. I searched online and found a suitable addition on batteryspace.com. I bought a 6.4V 1600mAh rechargeable battery for $30 (shipping included). It was a LiFePO4 battery which offered great cycle life, constant discharge voltage and great safety (safety was important because it was to be incorporated in a toy).

Step 3: Adding the Batteries Together

The idea here was to increase the lifetime/working time of the vehicle by increasing the capacity of the original battery. And it was done by attaching the two batteries (original (blue) with new (white) in Parallel, so the voltage remained same of 6.4V but the capacity was increased from 350mAh to 1950mAh (350+1600). If you want to increase also the performance- you have to increase the output voltage, which is very risky because the circuit was designed for a certain voltage. So never put the batteries in Series if you are not sure.

Once the batteries were solded together I mounted the blue battery in its holder and white battery (which was little heavy) above the rear wheels (it was a real wheel drive truck) to give it more stability. Now the truck was ready with roughly 5 time increase in working time (roughly 100 to 120 minutes). My son was really happy with this upgrade and I was too because now I could make him sweat.

Step 4: Conclusion

The charging time was also 5 times longer now- (because

there was no chrger provided with the truck) I use a 5 Volt 1A cell phone charger to chare the batteries. It took almost 6 to 8 hours to fully charge the batteries.

The procedure is outline in the pictures. It will be different depending on the vehicle but the idea would be the same. Please be safe when playing with the batteries.

I hate it when people without the first idea about electricity make Instructables with lithium ion batteries.

This is TOTALLY UNSAFE, lithium ion batteries need to be charged at 4.2v with a specific cutoff charging circuit. These small circuits can be bought off eBay for less than $1.

Follow this persons instructions if you want to burn your house down. Or jump on eBay, spend $1 and save yourself the heartache.

I bought some good rc toys car for my grandson.what worsening me Audy RS5 has 5AA ni-cd battery PAC of 6v,500mah,lasting 30min of cont.running OK.now I thought in battery chamber,5AA size rechargeable battery holder to be fixed for permanent solu.but not getting fit in chamber.what is the solu.WO purchasing less guranted battery pack?.

Thanks for posting. I have a similar RC Jeep. It did not work out of the box. But it did not have the antenna wire. Both on the vehicle / transmitter. Did you have the same problem? I (see you have joined the antenna.) What would you recommend ? Is there an easy way to extend the antenna ?

Also the batteries on mine are different. They are soldered with the PCB. What would you recommend ? Is it worth doing the mod or just trash the Jeep ?

I would like people to enjoy electric flight and continue to enjoy electric flight and here are my recommendations on how to get the most from your LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries. Lithium Polymer cells are often referred to as LiPo’s or Li-Poly’s and are a great advancement to increasing the performance and duration of electric flight. If used incorrectly LiPo cells will only give a short number of cycles and in the worst cases can result in a fire. Good quality cells like ours, although cost more initially will easily out perform (hold a higher voltage under load) and outlast the cheaper cells and therefore cost you less in the long term. Good quality cells are also safer in operation then the cheaper far east cells. As with all things in life, you get what you pay for.

Keep your current draw below 52.8 Amps.
40 x 2,200mA = 88,000mA 88,000mA x 0.60 = 52,800mA = 52.8A

Example 2
7.4 lipo 3,700mAh. Max continuous rating = 40C and a peak of 60C.
Charge as a 3S pack (11.1V nominal) and at 2,960mA (2.9A or 3.0A) (3,700mAh x 0.8 = 2,960mA).
Maximum discharge current is 40C. C is the cells capacity therefore 40C = 40 x 3,700 = 148,000mA which is also equal to 148.00 Amps.

In this example you should try to achieve the following:-
Keep your current draw below 88.8 Amps.
40 x 3,700mA = 148,000mA 148,000mA x 0.60 = 88,800mA = 88.8A

If the Li-Po battery is brand new and you decide to keep it for a while before putting it to first use, contrary to common sense, it is best not to store the battery in its uncharged state. The best practice is to fully charge it and maintain it at 4.2 V per cell before storing the battery away for a long time. For example, if you bought a 3 cell Li-Po battery rated at 11.1 V, when fully charged, the battery will hold 12.6 V. This will make it suitable to keep stored away for 3 to 6 months. However, after 6 months, the voltage will start to weaken. When this happens, fully charge it again, whereby giving another 6 months of storage time. While this procedure can be performed over and over, the battery shouldn’t be kept without being used for more than 2 years.

7 More Tips to Get The Most From Your Battery Pack

• Don’t cut corners. Buy the best battery pack you can afford it pays dividends in the long run.
• Chargers that come bundled with many models are marginal at best, upgrade to a better charger whenever possible.
• Get a charger that has a built-in voltmeter or pick up a multi-meter separately so you can easily monitor the condition of your batteries.
• Avoid charging your batteries after each flight if they are still hot to the touch.

There is this thing called voltage and as your battery gets more and more depleted by use, the voltage of it will drop as well. For example, if you are using a li-ion battery in a flashlight the nominal voltage will be 3.6V, the fully charged battery will be 4.2V while a completely empty cell will measure at 2.5V.

You should never let your battery drop below 3V in that example. This goes for pretty much any battery chemistry.

Generally speaking, you should avoid depleting the whole battery whenever it is possible. Some devices have protections in place to avoid this from happening but with others, you will just have to use your best judgment and put the battery to recharge before it is completely empty.

2. Avoid extreme heats and cold temperatures

Generally speaking, no battery loves extreme temperatures. Some chemistries are more resistant than others but if you want your battery to last longer then you should use them at room temperature.

Don’t use the device if it is overheating causing the battery to overheat too. This will, in time, result in capacity loss and eventually the total battery failure.

Some devices like laptops will benefit greatly if you use a cooling pad to help dissipate the heat output. That way their Li-ion battery will not be exposed to too much heat and will therefore last longer.

This goes for regular AA batteries too. NiMH don’t like heat either so keep them away from hot ambient temperatures.

Additionally, don’t recharge the batteries in highly heated ambient temperatures. Don’t use a poor battery charger that will heat them up too much for no reason. Whenever the battery heats up its lifespan is lost by a little. Add it up and they will die sooner than they should.

3. Charge your battery will lower current

If you must use a fast charger then go right ahead. Just know that this is also a contributing factor to the death of the battery.

According to techmoment.net , using a lower charging current than what the battery charging is rated at will greatly prolong their life span. For example, if your battery is rated to be charged at 2A that means that it can handle that load but not that it is necessary. If you charge with 0.5A for example you will not stress the battery at any significant level because it is rated at much higher load endurance.

You will have to wait longer for the battery to charge but this will help a lot in keeping the battery alive longer. Additionally, using a lower current will reduce the heat generated in the battery due to the internal resistance helping your battery even further.

4. Store the battery with half the charge

If you must store your batteries for later use in the distant future you should store them at about 50% of their charge capacity. Also, store them in a cooler area.

This will also help a lot in lengthening their span.

In today’s mobile world, battery life is precious. If you don’t believe me, go to an airport and watch the road warriors. It can get downright nasty when two spot the only available outlet at the same time.

It doesn’t take long to learn what helps preserve the current charge on the battery. What’s not well known is how to care for the battery itself. That’s just as important. Doing so allows the battery to operate efficiently. Here are a few ways to keep your lithium-ion batteries healthy.

1: Keep your batteries at room temperature

That means between 20 and 25 degrees C. The worst thing that can happen to a lithium-ion battery is to have a full charge and be subjected to elevated temperatures. So don’t leave or charge your mobile device’s battery in your car if it’s hot out. Heat is by far the largest factor when it comes to reducing lithium-ion battery life.

2: Think about getting a high-capacity lithium-ion battery, rather than carrying a spare

Batteries deteriorate over time, whether they’re being used or not. So a spare battery won’t last much longer than the one in use. It’s important to remember the aging characteristic when purchasing batteries. Make sure to ask for ones with the most recent manufacturing date.

3: Allow partial discharges and avoid full ones (usually)

Unlike NiCad batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not have a charge memory. That means deep-discharge cycles are not required. In fact, it’s better for the battery to use partial-discharge cycles.

There is one exception. Battery experts suggest that after 30 charges, you should allow lithium-ion batteries to almost completely discharge. Continuous partial discharges create a condition called digital memory, decreasing the accuracy of the device’s power gauge. So let the battery discharge to the cut-off point and then recharge. The power gauge will be recalibrated.

4: Avoid completely discharging lithium-ion batteries

If a lithium-ion battery is discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, a safety circuit built into the battery opens and the battery appears to be dead. The original charger will be of no use. Only battery analyzers with the boost function have a chance of recharging the battery.

Also, for safety reasons, do not recharge deeply discharged lithium-ion batteries if they have been stored in that condition for several months.

5: For extended storage, discharge a lithium-ion battery to about 40 percent and store it in a cool place

I’ve always had an extra battery for my notebook, but it would never last as long as the original battery. I know now that it’s because I was storing the battery fully charged. That means oxidation of lithium-ion is at its highest rate. Storing lithium-ion batteries at 40 percent discharge and in the refrigerator (not freezer) is recommended

Final thoughts

Modern-day displays and phone tech put a lot of strain on the battery inside your handset, but you can eke out as much life as possible by tweaking your mobile habits and taking advantage of features built right into Android and iOS.

Find the apps that are draining your battery dry

Battery life is such a concern that both Apple and Google have included monitoring tools within their phones’ operating systems, enabling you to check which apps are using up most of the power. From the Settings app in iOS tap Battery; on Android, tap Battery, then Battery usage. There, you’ll see which apps have used the most juice since your phone was last fully charged.

Once you’ve got a list of the worst offenders, you have a few options. You can completely uninstall the troublesome apps and enjoy the subsequent battery savings, or you can dive into the individual settings for those apps and try to reduce their battery usage. Maybe stop them from checking for new updates as often, for example. Remember, you can still access sites like Facebook and Twitter through a mobile browser if you don’t have the apps installed.

That large, bright display on your phone is one of the biggest draws on the device’s battery, so turning down its brightness or switching to dark mode can help battery life. You can find these options under Display in Android Settings, and Display & Brightness in iOS Settings.

Android and iOS both let you adjust how quickly the screen lock activates on your phone—dial this timer down to ensure your display is on for as little time as possible. If you really need that extra juice, put your phone in airplane mode and watch that battery level stay steady.

The obvious downside to this is that you won’t be able to use anything that connects to the web, make any calls, or send any texts. But if you really need to preserve your battery life, it’s an option—and it means your phone will be much less of a distraction at the same time. Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen on Android, or swipe down from the top right of the screen on iOS, to find this option (it’s an airplane icon).

It’s well worth using the airplane mode option when you’re in areas with a patchy signal as well. That’s because phones tend to amp up their efforts to get connected when they’re struggling to find a signal, which will drain the battery faster. AA batteries start off with 1.5 volts of energy, but the voltage goes down as the batteries are used up. Once the batteries dip below 1.35 volts, they appear to be dead, even though they still have a lot of juice left.

It’s akin to a tube of toothpaste, according to Batteriser founder Bob Roohparvar, who is a computer science professor at California State University.

“If you just squeeze from the top, you’re only going to get so much out of the tube,” Roohparvar said.

For example, a typical AA battery will stop working after 240 minutes of use powering a remote control, 95 minutes powering portable speakers, or just 38 minutes powering an RC toy. Roohparvar claims that the Batteriser can get 1,185 minutes out of a remote (5 times more energy), 570 minutes out of portable speakers (6x) or 355 minutes out of an RC toy (9x).

Batteriser can continue to deliver a 1.5 volt charge from batteries that have actually discharged down to 0.6 volts.

Roohparvar says he hopes to shake up the $14 billion disposable battery market. There are 5.4 billion battery-operated devices in the wild, and 15 billion disposable batteries are bought every year around the world. A typical U.S. home has 28 battery-operated devices inside.

The Batteriser will come in AA, AAA, C and D-cell varieties and sell for less than $10 for a pack of four. At that price, Roohparvar, the technology “pays for itself” after just one purchase — a typical AA battery costs $2.50, and the Batteriser makes one battery last as long as eight.

He said it’s a cheaper solution than rechargeable batteries. And those rechargeable batteries are typically made of lithium, which isn’t compatible with many battery-powered products.

“The Batteriser is giving you lithium performance at alkaline price,” Roohparvar said.

After an Indiegogo campaign in July for early-adopters, Roohparvar says the Batteriser will begin selling on Amazon ( AMZN ) in the fall. He also said that he has been talking to executives at Wal-Mart ( WMT ) about selling the battery sleeves in the future.

Though Roohparvar says that his patents would prevent the battery manufacturers from simply adding the Batteriser technology into their batteries, he said he would be open to licensing the technology down the road. He also said that Batteriser could one day partner with a Duracell or an Energizer and sell the batteries and Batterisers as a single package.

    Excess heat is not only bad for your processor (and your lap), but your battery as well.

If possible, get hold of an old-school, 1A slow charger for phones, and use that unless you really need to top up fast.

    When you connect two batteries in parallel, you are effectively halving your discharge rate while doubling your capacity — effectively, doubling battery life, as you are intending to do.

    Serial connection does not increase life, but rather, increases operating voltage, which some devices need. If your device has two serial batteries, then you need to connect another two serial batteries in parallel.

    If they are not going to be recharged in the configuration you are putting them in, then you should be able to connect them in parallel. They will end up using a small amount of power by charging each other a small amount, but you will probably see more than a doubling of battery life.

    If you are pulling a lot of power from a battery, you will find that its battery capacity decreases and causes excess current draw to decrease life and decreased capacity to decrease life. If the cells are not well matched, like if they are different capacity (size), age, state of charge, temperature, and so on, you can get a large current going from one cell to the other when you first connect them, until they equalize in voltage. This current can be high enough to do permanent damage to the cells.

    Additionally there is the problem of slightly mismatched capacities, where at the end of a discharge cycle one of the cells will be empty before the other one, so the one with a little energy remaining will provide all the current. The same thing happens at the end of charging, where one gets full earlier and the other is being charged at twice the nominal rate. Unless you take the trouble to put a current meter on each cell, it’s an invisible problem, but over many charge/discharge cycles it can do serious damage to the overworked cell, potentially even fire or explosion. When Sanyo recalled some lithium-ion batteries from Lenovo, it was the 3s3p extended packs that were the problem, the same cells in 3s2p were ok. The more cells in parallel, the worse the imbalance problem gets, which is why you generally don’t see >3p in commercial products. The battery probably won’t catch fire the first time you use it, but statistically over lots of shipped product there can be a higher failure rate. For a hobby project, you can mitigate this by using new cells (not salvage from different old laptop packs) and adding a resistor between the parallel cells as a current limiter at least until they equalize.

    All of the above only applies to lithium-ion. If you’re using NiMH or NiCd, you probably don’t want to connect them in parallel at all. Lithium-ion is easy to charge because you just connect it to a power supply that is both current- and voltage-limited, and turn off the charger when the current falls below some threshold or you get past a timeout (or a safety flag such as temperature). NiCd/NiMH is a lot messier to charge (quickly), you need a circuit that can watch the voltage profile, temperature, etc. (unless you’re trickle charging). The imbalance problem would be more difficult. It’s probably been done, but when laptops ran from NiCd the packs had a higher voltage because the cells were all in series. Disposable alkalines are always in series because you can expect the user to pick any old cells from the drawer without regard for state of charge. They can already leak if overdischarged, connecting them in parallel would only make the problem worse. Imagine someone mixing NiMH and alkaline AA of various capacity and fullness randomly in both series and parallel – the product will soon be ruined.   • I’ve had rooted android phones before and I still had my X S for nearly 4 weeks before I decided to root it. There is no need to rush in to it take it slow and see how you get on.

    Either way is a really nice phone.and it looks better than most

    Personally I would upgrade to ICS. And just play with it for a few weeks.
