Oh hello, not-so-surprise birthday party.

There’s nothing more depressing than seeing a Facebook group on your News Feed for a party that you weren’t invited to (not that that ever happens to me—I’m invited to every party).

How can you tell if a group you just created can be seen by its 15 members or the entire Facebook community? It comes down to the difference between open, closed, and secret groups. Here’s how to tell the difference to keep your best friend’s surprise party from being broadcasted onto her News Feed.

An open Facebook group can be seen by anyone, and anyone who sees it can request to add himself. Open groups show up in users’ News Feeds and are totally out in the—you guessed it—open.

Closed and secret Facebook groups seem like they should be fairly similar. The difference is that closed groups can be seen by the public, while secret groups can’t. If you create a closed group, the name of it, its members, and its description can be seen by the public—basically everything but the posts in the group. This could be handy for a group that wants to create the illusion of exclusivity but isn’t really that important.

A secret Facebook group is the most secure of the three types. The only people who can see the group and its members are the people added to the group. To the public, secret groups are invisible, so this is the kind you should use for your “Shh! It’s a surprise!” group.

There is a setting available for all three groups that dictates who can add people to the group. By default, group members are free to add other people to groups, even in secret groups. This can be changed to allow the group admin to approve members to the group, making it a super secret group.

Group privacy is hard to figure out but easy to change. It’s surprising to learn that a closed group is almost completely open to the rest of the Facebook world, so knowing the difference could help save you from future Facebook awkwardness and secondhand embarrassment.

A Facebook group page can be a useful tool for collaborating on business projects and ideas. Membership and content can be controlled by a group admin, allowing for a more focused discussion. But if the only admin leaves the group, no one’s left in charge. The group will remain on Facebook until all members leave, at which point the group dissolves. If you want to close the group but can’t get all the members to leave, you or another group member will have to claim admin responsibilities.

Step 1

Select the “Home” tab on your Facebook toolbar, and then click the group name in the left panel. If you don’t see the group listed, you will have to get a member to add you to the group. If membership requires admin approval, the other member will first have to complete the next step and become an admin.

Step 2

Click the gear icon near the top of the page, and then select “Make Me Admin.” If another member is doing this step for you, she can now add you to the group and make you an admin. To make you an admin, she must select the “About” tab, click the “gear” icon under your name and then select “Make Admin.”

Step 3

Select the “About” tab on the group page to display all the members.

Step 4

Click the “gear” icon under each member’s name, and then select “Remove From Group.” Repeat the process until all the members are removed from the group. Remove yourself last, otherwise you’ll be back to where you started. When you remove yourself, click the “Delete Group” button to close the group.

Jim, one of our readers contacted us recently to know how to change the privacy of a Facebook group. He intended to change the privacy from closed to secret, but wasn’t able to find the relevant option. Hence, while helping him, I also decided to write this guide, just in case somebody else is in the same boat as Jim.

Facebook allows 3 types of privacy settings for a group – Public, Closed and Secret. You can check out this post to know the differences among the 3 group privacy options. You can freely change your Facebook group from public to closed or secret. You can also change it back to allow more exposure and reach.

Restrictions for larger groups: Facebook has restrictions on groups which have more than 5,000 members. You are only allowed to move to a more restrictive privacy setting.

So, if your group is larger than 5,000 members, then take caution and review before changing the privacy settings. For example, if you change your group from closed to secret, then you cannot revert it back to closed if you want to do that in the future. Facebook gives you 24 hours to revert this change after which it is permanent.

How to change the privacy of Facebook group?

You need to be a group admin to make changes to the privacy of a group. Facebook group privacy change takes only a few seconds to complete and all group members as well as admins are notified when the privacy change takes place. Here’s how to change the group privacy on different Facebook platforms.

Details for Web (Desktop) version

  1. Open the Facebook group in your internet browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari or whatever you use).
  2. Click on the “More” button and click again on Edit group settings.

  3. Click on Change privacy settings to make changes to the privacy settings of the group.
How to make a closed facebook group
  4. Select the new privacy type from Open, Closed, or Secret and confirm the change.

That should do the trick for you on the desktop version of Facebook. If you’re on a mobile device and using either the app or the mobile web version, then refer to the details below to make the privacy change on your mobile device.

Details for Android and iOS app

A desktop isn’t needed for making a change as simple as the group privacy. So, if you are using the Android or iOS app, then refer to the steps below to make your FB group closed, secret or open.

  1. First of all, open the Facebook group on your mobile app. Again, you need to be an admin to make changes to group privacy.
  2. Now tap on Admin Tools and Settings. Then tap on Settings from the new options that appear. How to make a closed facebook groupManage group settings
  3. Keep scrolling down till you spot Privacy. Tap on it and choose the new group privacy setting as desired. How to make a closed facebook groupChange privacy settings

Your privacy settings will be updated momentarily and all group members will be notified. I’d like to remind you once again that you cannot move to a less restrictive setting in case your group has more than 5k members. So, make such a change only when you are absolutely sure about what you are doing.

Details for Mobile browser

If you are using Facebook on your mobile phone, but not willing to download the app, then also you can change Facebook group privacy. Here are the steps that you need to follow:

  1. Open the group homepage and tap on More. Then tap on View group info from the popup menu that appears. How to make a closed facebook groupGroup info
  2. Tap on the Edit group settings option found towards the end of the page. (It was the 2nd last option for me.)
  3. Now tap on Change Privacy. You will be presented with a new menu wherein you can select the new privacy setting for the group.

It is also possible to make changes to group privacy on the basic version of Facebook. However, since smartphones are getting cheaper, I’d skip that part. If you’re using the basic version of Facebook and looking for a way to make the privacy change, then feel free to leave a comment or reach me via an email. I’d be glad to assist you.

Closed and secret groups are being renamed to private visible and hidden groups

How to make a closed facebook group

Facebook announced today that it’s updating its group privacy settings and working to better moderate bad content breaking the platform’s rules. The platform is renaming its confusing public, closed, and secret group settings to the slightly more straightforward public and private settings, with the option to make private groups visible or hidden to non-members. The change is part of an ongoing effort to improve group safety, through features like giving admins more moderation tools and members the option to see the group’s history and preview its content before accepting or declining an invitation.

The new group settings are also part of the Safe Communities Initiative that the company started two years ago, in an effort to monitor and detect bad content in Facebook groups. The announcement comes in the wake of recent findings that secret Facebook groups have been acting as gathering places for racist, offensive activity — one example coming from earlier last month, when ProPublica found a group of Border Patrol agents joking about migrant deaths.

How to make a closed facebook group

The name change itself isn’t likely to stop any bad behavior, as secret groups will still be around. Closed groups, which only let current members view group content and see who else is in the group, will now be labeled as private but visible groups. Secret groups, which are hidden from search, but still require an invitation to join, will be changed to a private and hidden group.

Facebook says it uses AI and machine learning to “proactively detect bad content before anyone reports it, and sometimes before people even see it.” The flagged content then gets reviewed by humans to see if it violates Facebook’s Community Standards, but clearly, the system is flawed if offensive groups are still flying under the radar.

In April, Facebook updated its policies to hold admins to higher standards, committing to penalize the overall group if moderators approve posts that break the platform’s rules. To make sure admins will be held responsible for their groups’ behavior, they’ll have access to a tool called Group Quality, which gives them an overview of content that violates Community Standards. Admins will also have an option to share what rules were broken when they decline pending posts, remove comments, or mute members.

Don’t like how your Facebook Group is doing? You can leave it, but the group will still be there. If you want to hide the Facebook Group from new members, or if you want to delete it, follow our guide.

How to Archive a Facebook Group

When you archive a Facebook Group, you won’t be able to create posts or like or add comments. You won’t be able to add more members, but existing members will be able to view the group. You can restore the group to its former glory at any time.

You can archive a Facebook group from the group’s page from either the Facebook website or the Facebook app on iPhone or Android.

We’ll be using the new Facebook Desktop interface to guide you through the process. (Here’s how to get the new Facebook interface.)

First, open the Facebook website in your browser of choice, and navigate to the Facebook Group you want to archive or delete. Click the “Menu” button from the top toolbar, and select the “Archive” option.

How to Delete a Facebook Group

The process of deleting a Facebook Group is not as transparent, though. You first have to remove all members and then leave the Facebook Group yourself to actually delete it.

Only the group’s creator (who is the same as the admin) can delete the group. If the creator is no longer part of the group, then any admin can delete the group.

On the Facebook website, open the Facebook Group that you want to delete. Click the “Members” button on the top toolbar.

You’ll now see a list of all the members. Click the “Menu” button next to a member, and choose the “Remove Member” option.

Use privacy features to keep your family’s info in the family

by Steve Morgenstern, April 14, 2011 | Comments: 0

  • Control who has access to your family page
  • Contact everyone in the group at once
  • Understand the privacy features and make them work for you

Everybody loves Facebook for staying in touch, but that doesn’t mean you necessarily want to share family-related material with your friends and business colleagues. The solution: create a private Facebook group just for family members. You control access, you can allow whomever you like to share messages and photos with the group, and, of course, it’s free.

How to make a closed facebook group

Building a Facebook group page is a great way for family members to stay in touch.

For starters, you’ll need a personal Facebook account (the odds are good that you already have one — more than half of 50-plus Internet users enjoy social networking today). Be sure you understand the privacy settings used to limit who sees what you post online. You’ll find these controls in the drop-down Account menu at the top far right of the page, under Privacy Settings; your options are explained in detail here.

A Facebook group page isn’t that different from your personal page. Members of the group can post messages, photos and video; leave comments; create events, “like” posts that appeal to them; and have live chat sessions with each participant typing messages back and forth. But there are some interesting added capabilities, too. For example, instead of sending messages one at a time to group members, you can contact everyone at once with the click of a button.

Another intriguing option is creating group documents, which everyone can work on together. Wish you had all the family recipes in one place? Create a group document and invite everyone to kick in their favorites.

You don’t have to look far to find the “Create Group” option. There should be a clickable link in the right-hand column on your Home page (you may have to click “More” if you’ve already joined several groups). If you still don’t see the link, just go to Facebook.com/groups.

Click “Create Group” and a box pops up asking you to name the group, choose an icon, add members and set the group’s overall privacy level. Let’s take a moment to explore each of these tasks. And remember, you can change any of these choices after the group is created.

The icon is a little picture that shows up next to the group name in listings. There are lots of choices in a drop-down menu.

When choosing a name, you’re allowed to duplicate one that’s already in use, but you might want to come up with something distinctive if you want family members to find it by searching. Pity poor John Smith scrolling through page after page of Smith Family groups!

In the Members section, you can add any Facebook friend to the new group. They don’t have to confirm anything (it’s easy to drop out if they don’t want to participate). When you start typing, a list of existing Facebook friends’ names matching what you’ve entered so far appears, so you don’t have to worry about misspellings. And, of course, you can always add more members later on.

The Privacy setting here controls the group’s online visibility. If you want the group to show up in Facebook searches and be completely visible to anyone, including the member list and anything that’s been posted, choose “Open” here. For more privacy, choose “Closed”: Facebook members will be able to find the group, see the members list and ask to join, but they won’t see the postings. To fly completely under the radar, choose “Private.” That way, the group won’t show up in a Facebook search and nobody but members will be able to see it — the group name won’t even show up in your profile.

Now just click “Create” and — voilà — your family has an online home!

As the creator of the group, you’re automatically considered a group administrator, which means you can change settings, approve new members and remove members who make nasty comments about you at a family wedding. You can share these privileges with other members by making them administrators, too. Just click “See all” next to the Members List on the group home page and you’ll see the “Make Admin” option under each name. You’ll also see a little “x” next to each name. Click one of these to remove a member from the group.

If you look to the left of the group name at the top of the page, you’ll see a drawing of two heads in a box — boring! Click on it, though, and things get more interesting. Now you can upload a family photo or even crowd around the webcam (if you have one) and take a picture then and there. Now that photo will be the face of the group, much like the Profile Picture in your personal Facebook account.

Another feature worth setting up is a group email address (you’ll find this option under “Edit Group”). You create the first part of the address (say “AARPMember” as an example) and Facebook adds “@groups.facebook.com.” Now, whenever anyone sends an email to [email protected], the message will appear automatically in every group member’s News Feed.

That takes care of the basics: If you need additional information, Facebook has a comprehensive help section for group features here.

And, of course, now that you have the family site under your belt, it’s time to think about additional opportunities for quick-and-easy group sharing. Do you play on a sports team, or belong to a club or congregation? Are there a group of friends at work who’d like to share private messages during off-hours? Facebook lets each member join up to 300 groups, so the only effective limitation is your imagination.

How to make a closed facebook group

Let’s come to the point without wasting any time.

Here are the 3 ways, i found for hacking any facebook group.

  1. Steal the group by social engineering…
  2. Hack Admin account and grab the group…
  3. My Attack…

Since most of users are Beware of social engineering… etc so you can’t target everyone, thus it is not possible to target any group and capture. ☹ ☹

The Bullshit ….. As you know hacking individuals is quite difficult, especially if the one has a little knowledge about techs.

As many of you know that if any group has no Admin or moderator facebook says, “ This group needs an admin. ”

And if y ou are member of that group you can claim yourself as an admin.

I thought, Can i create a situation at which the group has no admin or moderator? And i said yes i can… i can create this situation by disabling all the admins and moderators accounts simultaneously.

Hmmmmmm, There are several steps to do that (Disabling some facebook accounts simultaneously) , But I’m not going to explain it here !

I wanted to go further and i created a new test group, added some members to it including my personal account as a member and i disabled the account (which was admin of the group), i entered the group with my personal account and i saw that facebook is saying that this group needs an admin….

So one thing i confirmed that they have made it in such a way that if a group has not any admin available (no matter if it has admin but his/her account is in temporary disable state), it will be available for new admin claim….

How to make a closed facebook group

I just claimed myself as an admin…….

Since a disable account can be recovered by submitting goverment proof, i recovered my disabled account that was previous admin but wtf i saw there, my previous admin account (Group creator and previous admin) was not acting as an admin anymore to the group after my account recovery, This gave a conclusion to me that using this attack i can target any group… i didn’t stop, i targeted a 1.3 million members group which had 4 admin and one moderator only, i disabled all 5 accounts simultaneously and took that group. One of the admin of that group recovered his account but he found himself no more admin…. he came to me (as i was the new admin of his group) and started begging… i returned back his group and then i thought i should report this issue to facebook.

I just reported it to facebook for adding the feature that once a group is being hacked by disabling all the admins and moderators accounts simultaneously, then after recovery of admin account from disable state he/she will still stay as an admin even after new admin claim has done by me (or any attacker)…

Here is the Initial response . . .

How to make a closed facebook group

That’s all, they said… it is just an attack which is misuse of facebook feature of admin claim when no admin is available. . . Also he said,“ disabling the users in the manner i described in the report is considered a social engineering attack against facebook users and infrastructure”…..

I replied them … i request to facebook for adding the functionality (that is after recovery of admin account, he/she will still stay as an admin even after new admin claim by attacker) , they replied…

I want to set up a private group on Facebook for my friends that works just like a regular Facebook group, but is only visible to us, not the general public at large. I also want to be able to approve members before they can join the list too. Can Facebook do that?

You betcha! Facebook has lots of sophistication with group management and while it’s not the easiest process in the world, you can definitely create a private or closed group on Facebook.
I recently set up the Facebook group for the Denver Film Critics Society, a group that is only intended for members of the society, not the general public at large. For us, it was okay that it be visible (after all, that’s a wee bit of marketing) but we can’t have non-members access our discussion as we’re under various disclosure rules with the movie studios and advertising agencies.
Anyway, suffice to say, same situation, same challenge.
Here’s how I did it. Take a deep breath, it’s kinda complicated…
On the bottom of every page there’s a Facebook navigational bar. One of the items on the bar is the “groups” feature:

Click on Groups and then on the top of the subsequent page, right next to the search box, you’ll see a helpful button:

Click on “Create a New Group” and you’ll jump right into a fairly complicated form that asks for all sorts of information about your new group. Fill it out as you see fit:
How to make a closed facebook group
When you’re ready, click on “Create Group” and you’ll go to the first of a bunch of configuration and setting options:
How to make a closed facebook group
For your private group, you might want to enable everything for members, but not for non-members. Don’t worry about the privacy settings yet, that’s still to come…
Scroll down a bit and you’ll see the key options for a Facebook group: Open, Closed, and Secret:
How to make a closed facebook group
Click on “Save” and your group is created and ready to rock. In fact, you can even let your friends know about it on your feed, if you’d like:
How to make a closed facebook group
For a completely secret group, you might not want to do that, otherwise you’ll have people you don’t want as members asking about it (and knowing it exists in the first place).
If you do, however, Facebook will let you know that it worked and what happened:

Now the fun part. Who do you want in your group? Click on “Invite” then go through your list of Facebook friends to pick a few out:
How to make a closed facebook group
Picked out the right folk? Great. Click on the “Invite” button at the bottom of the page and they’ll get an invitation to the group.
Adding a Custom Graphic to your Facebook group
One thing that puzzled me when I set up my first Facebook group was how to add a custom icon so that it looks more snazzy? It’s not too hard, but, again, you have to poke around a bit to find out the solution.
I’ll take a shortcut. Since I did announce the creation of the group, there’s a handy entry on my status updates that indicates as such:

To edit the group settings, I’ll simply click on the group name in the update. Now I end up here:
How to make a closed facebook group
Still, how do you change that darn picture??
The secret? Move your cursor over the current image and a new option pops up:
How to make a closed facebook group
Ah ha! Click on that…
How to make a closed facebook group
A number of options appear. Choose “Upload a Picture”, and hopefully you already have a suitable Facebook Group friendly image ready to go…
How to make a closed facebook group
My image is a PNG format graphic that’s 136×79 in size, fairly small:

It’s perfect for the task, so I choose it, then click “Upload” and…

That’s it. Graphic associated with the new Facebook Group.
One final tip: if you want to point your friends directly to the group via an email or similar, just grab the URL from the main group page. For the Denver Film Critics Society group, it’s http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=185574380926, as an example.
Hope that helps you out with Facebook groups. I also invite you to join our Facebook fan page too, while you’re at it. ?
