  • You can always add a piece of cardboard to the bottom of the bag to make it more sturdy.
  • If something feels flimsy, add more tape!

Use Fabric to Make Gift Bags for Bottles

” data-caption=”” data-expand=”300″ data-tracking-container=”true” />

You can make a fabric gift bag with little-to-no sewing experience. This version does require some sewing, but you can make a similar bag using fabric glue if what you intend to carry isn’t heavy. Opt to sew the bag if you want to transport glass wine bottles.

Add Dimension to a Paper Gift Bag

” data-caption=”” data-expand=”300″ data-tracking-container=”true” />

This DIY gift bag is a way to add dimension and interest to a present without needing to spend a ton of money on a designer gift bag. Consider this style for smaller gifts like jewelry.

Repurpose an Old Book Into a Paper Gift Bag

” data-caption=”” data-expand=”300″ data-tracking-container=”true” />

How to make a gift bag from wrapping paper video tutorial

This how to make a gift bag tutorial is ideal for so many occasions. Store bought gift bags can be limiting in size, shape, and design. They can also be downright expensive!

By learning how to make a gift bag from wrapping paper, you can design it however you like. This is also perfect for those awkward shaped gifts, that no one really knows how to wrap, without making a bit of a mess! With this tutorial, you can use any size wrapping paper, as long as it is big enough to hold the gift. Surprise your nearest and dearest with a present, presented in its very own personalised gift bag. To take things up a notch, design your own wrapping paper first.

Step by step guide to making your own gift bag

Step 1

Here is what you will need to make your gift bag from wrapping paper:

  1. Wrapping paper: any size will do as long as it is big enough to hold the gift you will be inserting. Ensure the paper is square or rectangular
  2. Scissors
  3. Sticky tape: we love using washi tape, as there are so many cute designs available
  4. Ribbon: any width as long as it can be threaded through the hole punch holes
  5. A hole punch

We designed our own paper using the Bags of Love personalised wrapping paper. This is such a fun way of enhancing the project, as you can make a completely customised gift bag. To go that extra mile, you can create your own ribbon and labels too!

How to make a gift bag

Step 2

To make a gift bag out of wrapping paper, you can use any size paper, as long as it can cover the gift. We find using square or rectangular paper works best. Once you have your chosen wrapping paper, you need to lay it out on a flat surface, ensuring you have enough space around you.

How to make a gift bag

Step 3

Next, turn your wrapping paper over, so that the printed side is facing the table. Mark the centre line gently with either a pencil mark or a soft crease. Now, fold the first side of the paper 1cm over the centre line.

How to make a gift bag

Step 4

Now, fold the second side of your wrapping paper to overlap the first side by 1cm. Tape down the seam to keep it in place. We love using a decorative sticky tape, such as washi tape, to add some extra colour and fun to the finished bag. Try using complementary colours for a more sophisticated look, or something totally different to make it stand out even more!

How to make a gift bag

Step 5

Next, fold the bottom of the gift bag up, opening the seams and pressing them down firmly.

How to make a gift bag

Step 6

Fold the sides over the centre line. Press them flat and tape them so they are secure. You can used tape over the whole seam, or just part of it.

How to make a gift bag

Step 7

Next, you need to fold the sides of the bag, so that the points of the base meet as shown in the image below. You have now created the base of your homemade gift bag!

How to make a gift bag

Step 8

Once your base is finished, and taped securely, you can unfold your gift bag, and open it out. Place your hand into the bag, and gently open it up, ensuring the seams remain taped securely.

How to make a gift bag

Step 9

With your hand still placed inside the bag, invert the creases on both sides of the bag, pressing lightly. The edges should fold inwards, producing a square, flat base. The base should remain in tact, but feel free to add a little more tape, if the gift is particularly heavy.

How to make a gift bag

Step 10

It’s time to add the gift! Pop it in through the opening of the bag, and lay the gift bag flat.

How to make a gift bag

Step 11

Let’s secure your present. Fold the top of the gift bag down, twice, and punch a hole on either side of the fold. Use a hole punch to ensure the holes are level and symmetrical.

How to make a gift bag

Step 12

Let’s make the gift bag even more tempting! Get your ribbon and thread it through the holes. Use your bow making skills and tie a pretty bow. This will not only keep the bag closed, but it will make it look even more gorgeous. Again, use whatever kind of ribbon you like. Something contrasting or complementary would work equally well.

How to make a gift bag

Step 13

You’re all done! Stand back and admire your work.

Here’s a few tips to help you make your first gift bag

Print the template onto 8 1/2 by 11 inch card stock using your computer printer. If you don’t have any card stock you can print the pattern on regular paper and then trace the template onto a piece of cardboard, a shoe box lid, or the side of a cereal box. You’ll want a firm template so that it is easy to trace around.

Use a ruler to help you mark the straight lines for the template before you cut them, if you are starting with a paper pattern.

Once you’ve made the cardboard template either by printing the template onto card stock or by tracing around the template onto a piece of cardboard, place the template on your chosen paper and check the direction of any pictures on the paper. Orient the template so that the pictures are upright or they make a pleasing design. You’ll want to avoid putting faces or words upside down.

Trace around the template using a gold, silver, or bronze marker like this one. The gilded markers show up well on both light and dark glossy pages, making the lines easy to see and easy to cut around.

How to make a gift bag

Use a ruler or other straight edge to guide your paper folding to ensure that you get straight and crisp fold lines.

Reinforce the bottom of the bag by gluing a rectangle from the same magazine page into the inside of the bottom of the bag.

Plain gift bags can be made fancier by choosing silk or organza ribbons for the handles.

You can also cut out pictures from other magazine pages and glue them onto the front panels of your gift bags.

  • Print out just the page with the Gift Bag Template on card stock using your computer printer.
  • Cut the card stock around the Gift Bag Template just along the solid lines. Do not cut the dotted lines. This is your Gift Bag pattern.

  • Fold the top edge of the glossy magazine page over ¼ inch, toward the wrong side of the bag, wrong sides together. Crease this fold. Glue in place using a glue stick.
  • Fold the side flap A, wrong sides together. Crease the fold. Do not glue yet.
  • Fold the remaining vertical fold lines, wrong sides together, creasing each fold firmly. I found this easier to do using a ruler on the inside of the fold line to mark the fold and ensure that the fold line was straight.

  • Place fold A on the opposite edge of the bag, gluing the right side of A to the wrong side of the opposite edge. The gift bag now forms a bag that is open on both the top and the bottom
  • Fold the bottom tabs (B) and flaps (C) along the dotted lines, creasing each fold after it is made. Place the tabs (B) inside flaps (C) on the bottom of the bag. Glue the tabs and flaps into place using a glue stick.
  • Punch two holes parallel the top of the bag and press matching holes on the back of the bag, using a hole punch.
  • Cut a piece of butcher twine or jute twine 15 inches long.
  • Thread the twine through the holes in the top of the bag so that it makes a continuous circle. Hide the knot inside the bag.
  • Pull up in the center between the two holes on either side of the bag to form the handles.
  • You can reinforce the bottom of this gift bag by cutting a rectangle out of heavy paper that is 1 ¾ inches by 3 ¼ inches. Glue this into the bottom of the bag to reinforce the bottom flaps.

What You Will Need

How to make a gift bag

The supplies you will need to make your gift bag includes:

  • Cardstock paper of your choice – I used my Recollections All Seasons Cardstock Paper (Christmas-themed) for this tutorial
  • Tape – I used tape to secure the paper together but you can use liquid glue, glue stick, or any other forms of adhesive
  • Single hole puncher – We will use a hole puncher to create holes for our jute twine
  • Jute twine (or ribbon) – Jute twine will be used to create a knot or bow when we finish our gift bag. I grabbed mine from my local Michael’s.
  • Scissors – Not included in the picture above, but it will be necessary for cutting your jute twine (or ribbon)

How-to Video

This small gift bag has an approximate measurement of 3.5 in. x 2 in. x 6 in (with the top folded down).

Keep in mind that the size of your gift bag may differ, depending on how you fold your bag.

You can also use wrapping paper if you don’t have cardstock paper; however, wrapping paper can be less sturdy compared to cardstock paper because it is more thin to work with. The good thing about wrapping paper is that you can make bigger size gift bags, allowing you to customize the perfect size for your gift.

If you want bigger size gift bags and plan to make more than one bag, I recommend using butcher’s paper (or Kraft paper roll). These are the perfect paper weight for wrapping gifts, making gift bags, and doing other crafts.

I ordered these from Amazon and highly recommend them for your craft creations.

How You Can Use This Gift Bag

You can use it for gift exchanges, birthday parties, stocking stuffers, and more. I love that it’s big enough to fit in cards, letters, candies, and even other small gifts such as jewelry, bracelets, watches, cosmetics, and other small items.
