How to make a new file in windows

You can create new folders many different ways, but the two easiest ways are by using the Save As dialog box or File Explorer. This article explains how to do both.

In this article:

Create a new folder when saving your document by using the Save As dialog box

With your document open, click File > Save As.

Under Save As, select where you want to create your new folder. You might need to click Browse or Computer, and navigate to the location for your new folder.

In the Save As dialog box that opens, click New Folder.

Type the name of your new folder, and press Enter.

Note: You can’t use slashes, colons, semicolons, dashes, or periods in your folder name.

Click Save. Your document is saved to the new folder.

Create a new folder before you save your document by using File Explorer

Open File Explorer using one of the following methods:

Press the Windows logo key + E.

Find it from the Start menu (Windows 7 or Windows 10).

Click the folder icon in the taskbar.

For Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap Search. If you’re using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and click Search. Type File Explorer in the search box, and then tap or click File Explorer.

Navigate to where you want to create the new folder, and click New Folder.

Type the name of your folder, and press Enter.

To save a document to the new folder, open the document, and click File > Save As, and then browse to the new folder, and click Save.

How to make a new file in windows

Do your files and documents need better organization? If you group related files into distinct folders on your laptop or desktop, it’ll always be easy to find what you need. You can also change the icon size to make it more visually pleasing. Here are a few ways to quickly create a new folder in Windows 10, and after you master this, learn how to password protect a folder in Windows 10.

Method #1: Create a new folder with a keyboard shortcut

The fastest way to create a new folder in Windows is with the CTRL+Shift+N shortcut.

1. Navigate to the location where you want to create the folder. You can create a new folder at any location on your hard drive or within another folder (creating a subfolder) in File Explorer. You can also create a new folder on your desktop with this method.

2. Hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and N keys at the same time. Windows will immediately create the new folder with the not-very-imaginative suggested folder name of “New folder.”

3. Enter your desired folder name. It takes just seconds to create a new folder this way, but be sure to immediately begin typing your folder name when the folder first appears, because if you click on the folder or click away from File Explorer, the folder name will be “New folder” and you’ll have to rename it.

Method #2: Create a new folder by right-clicking

If you don’t remember the keyboard shortcut (or you just prefer using the mouse):

1. Navigate to the location where you want to create the folder.

2. Right-click on a blank space in the folder location. Take care with this: If you right-click on an existing item in the folder, you’ll get the wrong menu.

3. Select New then Folder from the contextual menu. Windows will create the new folder at your current location.

4. Enter your desired folder name to replace “New folder” and hit Enter.

You can create folders on the Desktop using this method too. Right-click on a blank space on the Desktop, then go to New > Folder.

Method #3: Create a new folder from the ribbon menu

Another simple way to create a new folder is to use the New folder button in the File Explorer menu.

Just navigate to the place you want the folder and click or tap “New folder” in the Home tab.

These three methods are the simplest and quickest ways to create a new folder, so you can get right to organizing your files.

the shortest one I use is basically the one by Nomad:

It does give an error:

But this error is on stderr. And > only redirects stdout, where nothing have been produced.
Hence the creation of an empty file.
The error message can be disregarded here. Or, as in Rain’s answer, redirected to NUL :

( echo “” would actually put “” in the file! And echo without the ‘.’ would put ” Command ECHO activated ” in the file. )

Note: the resulting file is not empty but includes a return line sequence: 2 bytes.

This discussion points to a true batch solution for a real empty file:

The ”

Since here the “string to the right of the equal sign” is empty. the result is an empty file.

The difference with cd. > filename (which is mentioned in Patrick Cuff’s answer and does also produce a 0-byte-length file) is that this “bit of redirection” (the echo lines without any CR:

The dir command should indicate the file size as 11 bytes: ” helloworld! “.

In Windows, the primary way of interacting with files and folders is through the File Explorer application. (In older versions of Windows, this may be called Windows Explorer. In Macs, the equivalent would be Finder.)

There are a couple of ways to open File Explorer. The shortcut Win+E will open File Explorer. It can also be opened by clicking the Start button and typing “File Explorer” or by right-clicking any folder and selecting Open. By default, File Explorer is pinned to the task bar (see below), and it can be opened from there.

Open the Start menu and type “File Explorer.”

Find File Explorer pinned to the taskbar.

Right-click a folder and select Open.

Some folders already exist in File Explorer, such as Documents, Desktop, and Downloads. (Documents may be called “My Documents” in older versions of Windows). You can create more folders or folders within folders to allow for better organization.

To create a folder, right-click, then select New>Folder.

Right-click in File Explorer, then select New>Folder.

In Windows 7, there is a New folder button near the top of the window. In Windows 10, you can also click the Home tab, then the New Folder button.

Windows 7 New folder button

Windows 10 New folder button

Renaming Files

To rename a file or folder, right-click the file or folder, then select Rename.

You can also click the name of the file or folder once, wait one second, then click the name of the file or folder again.

Note that in Windows, a file cannot contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? ” < > | . This is because those characters have special meaning in Windows. (For example \ is included in file paths.) If Windows encounters a file or folder with those symbols, it could potentially misread the file or folder name and cause problems. As a precaution, Windows will not let you save files or folders with those characters, so don’t worry about saving a file with those characters in the name by mistake.

Macs are less stringent about what characters can be included in a file or folder’s name; only the colon (:) cannot be used. However, it is a good practice to avoid using the Windows-prohibited characters in file names because the file name will be automatically changed when moved to a Windows computer.

Thank you for the quick and dirty method since windows seems to lack the “touch” command.

How can we use these commands to ‘touch’ a file. Could anyone provide the exact command that can work as linux ‘touch’ for any type of file?

Windows does not lack “touch”. It is echo. As the post describes? type: echo “” Blah.cpp

for Windows users, try

Make sure that you are typing in the code the right way. It happened to me when I typed in “echo This is a sample text file sample.txt”.

If you want to create a file with NO text in it do this:
at the CLI type “Echo.”: Your output should look like this:
C:\Temp>echo.

Every day, we come across different types of file extensions while working on a computer. The file extensions tell an operating system about the type of file so that the OS could select the right app or software to display the information in that file. The file extensions are written at the end of a file name after a dot (.). For example, a PDF file has a .pdf extension, a text file has a .txt file extension, etc. You can view the file extension by changing the View mode in the File Explorer or by viewing the file properties. But sometimes, the file properties window shows you nothing. This usually happens when the file has no extension. You can create files with no extension on your Windows computer. In this article, we will see how to create a file without extension in Windows 11/10.

To open a file in Windows OS, you simply have to double-click on it. When you double-click on a file, Windows will automatically select the program the file is compatible with and open the file. But sometimes, Windows displays a message “How do you want to open the file?” Some of you might have seen this message while opening a file. This usually happens when the dedicated program to open that file is not installed on your computer or the file has no extension. By displaying this message, Windows asks you to select a program to open that file.

How to make a new file in windows

If you switch your File Explorer’s view to Details, you will see the file type in the Type column (see the above screenshot). The file type lets users know the extension of the file. For example, the file type Text Document has a .txt extension, the Microsoft Word Document file has a .doc or .docx extension, the Adobe Acrobat Document file has a .pdf extension, etc. Similarly, if you open the properties of a particular file, you will see its extension under the General tab.

How to make a new file in windows

For the files with no extension, Windows displays File under the Type column and in the Properties window.

To view the properties of a file, right-click on it and select Properties. In the above screenshot, we have compared the properties of a file with a .pdf extension and a file with no extension.

How to create a file without Extension in Windows 11/10

You can create a file without an extension with Notepad in Windows 11/10. We have listed the instructions below:

How to make a new file in windows

  1. Click on the Windows Search and type Notepad.
  2. Select the Notepad app from the Search Results.
  3. Write the information that you want.
  4. Go to “File > Save.” Or simply press Ctrl + S keys.
  5. Type the name of the file under inverted commas. Let’s say if you want to save the file with the name sample file, type “sample file” and click on the Save button. After that, Windows will save the file with no extension.

When you double-click on the saved file, Windows will display a message asking you to select a program to open that file.

The above trick works not only with Notepad but also with other Windows apps. I have tried it on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Paint; and I was able to save the file with no extension.

How do I save a .TXT file without an extension?

You can save any .TXT file without an extension by using Notepad. Simply type its name under inverted commas while saving it and Windows will save the .TXT file with no extension. We have explained this process step by step above in this article.

How do you create a file without a filename?

To create a file without a filename, press and hold the Alt key and type 0160 while saving the file. You have to use the numeric keypad (the keypad on the right side of the keyboard) for typing the number 0160. After that, click Save. This will save the file without a filename.

How to make a new file in windows

You can use the same trick to rename the files. But before renaming the files, we suggest you create a copy of that file because sometimes, saving the file without a filename may corrupt it. Now right-click on the file that you want to save without a filename and click Rename. After that, press and hold the Alt key of your keyboard and type 0160 by using the numeric keypad of your keyboard and press Enter.

If you receive an error while saving the file without the filename, you can do one thing. Save it with any name and then rename that file by using the above method. If you receive a warning message that after renaming the file, you will no longer be able to open it, do not save that file without a filename.

You can open the file with no name simply by double-clicking on it. Some files (the files that you have saved with no filename) may give you an error when you try to open them. In such a case, right-click on that file and select Rename. Now, give any name to that file and hit Enter. After that, you will be able to open that file.

TIP: You can also create a folder without any icon or name in Windows.

Right now, when creating a file of some format (e.g. PHP files) in Windows Explorer, I always have to use “Create new text file” to create a file and then rename it (often via console, because extensions are hidden – I know I could disable that feature).

Is there a way to simply add an option to create a new file of any type that simply lets me type in the extension?

Sometimes i open cmd in this folder and type something like

this hint create empty file with extension that you need.

I just went for showing file extensions again.

If you load up a blank document in notepad, fill in some content, and hit save.. in the save dialog change the file type to “All Files”, then give the file a name (including the extension, like “my file.php”).

You can go in the powershell or the command prompt and use the following command:

How to make a new file in windows

You can create a file of any type in windows by making this change:

OS: Win 10 (More or less in other Win versions it will be the same)

  • Open ‘Control Panel’
  • Click ‘Appearance & Personalization’
  • Click ‘File Explorer Options’
  • It opens a dialog, click on ‘View’ Tab.

In the list, un-check ‘Hide Extensions for known file types’

Once you make this change, go to any folder; right click -> new file -> Type name of the file and the extension you wish.

You can create a text file in Windows 11 in different ways. Let’s see them below.

Note: The extension of the text file is txt.

Method #1

Please right-click on the blank area of the File Explorer (except Quick access or This PC) or desktop, hover your mouse over New and select Text Document.

Now, provide the new name for the file if you don’t like the suggested one. Hit the Enter key, and that’s all. You can see the text file, which is blank, in the place you’re in right now.

Double-click it to open it, then provide the content you want and press Ctrl + S to save the changes.

Remember that you can edit the file anytime, and here’s how:

Right-click on the file, and you will see the Open option in the context menu, which you can use to open the file. Alternatively, you can hit “Show more options” in the context menu and select the Edit option.

Note:

In File Explorer, you can also use these steps to create a blank text document: Go to the place where you want it. Hit the New in the command bar at the top and click on Text Document.

Now, provide the new name for the file if you don’t like the suggested one. Hit the Enter key, and that’s all. You can see the text file, which is blank, in the place you’re in right now.

Method #2

Open the Notepad and provide the content you want. Hit the “File” menu at the top, then Save or press Ctrl + S.

Go to the location you prefer in the popup. Type the file name in the popup’s “Filename” field. Ensure that the “Text Documents” got selected in the “Save as type” field, the default one.

Hit the Save button, and that’s all.

Note:

You can also use other programs such as WordPad, MS Word, and Notepad++ to create a new text document. But make sure you save the file in the text documents format.

For instance, here’s how to save the text file in WordPad:

Open the WordPad and provide the content. Press Ctrl + S. In the popup, go to the preferred location, provide the filename, and open the “Save as type” drop-down list. Choose “Text Document” and hit the Save button.

In the popup, click Yes, and that’s it. Remember that you can also use the above programs to edit and save.

Method #3

Using Command Prompt, you can do this task. Here’s how:

Open the Command Prompt, type in the following command, and press the Enter key on your keyboard: echo.>filename.txt

That’s all. You’ve successfully created a blank text file.

Notes: In the command, replace the filename with the actual filename you want. Also, before using the command, if you wish, change the location.

If you want to create a text file with content, then you need to use the following command: echo content > filename.txt

Replace the content with the content you want and the filename with the actual filename you want.

Method #4

Using the New-Item cmdlet, you can complete this task, and here’s how:

Launch PowerShell. Type in the following command and press the Enter key: New-Item -Path . -Name “filename.txt”

This command creates an empty text file with the name filename in the directory in which the PowerShell is right now.

If you wish, make these changes in the command: provide the path you want within double quotes on the dot (.) place and replace the filename with the actual filename you want.

Also, you can add the parameter “Value” to the command, which is for inputting the file content.

If you add it, the command will look like this:

New-Item -Path . -Name “filename.txt” -Value “Hello”
