I’m a sucker for lemonade, as evidenced by all the lemonade recipes I’ve got on this site.

But it wasn’t until last year that I realized I was missing out on the classic—fresh squeezed lemonade.

Why I love this recipe:

I’m a tart lemonade kind of gal, and this homemade lemonade recipe is just that—nice and tart.

The zippiness of the freshly squeezed lemon juice is balanced out by simple syrup—which adds just enough sweetness to take that edge off while letting the lemons sing.

We dilute it with cold water, and voila. You’ve got fresh squeezed lemonade in 10-15 minutes, depending on how long it takes you to squeeze the lemons!

The key to this recipe is freshly squeezed lemon juice. Please, please, please do not use the shelf-stable lemon juice you can find at the store—you’ll be missing out on the wonderful tartness of the fresh lemons.

In addition to these tools, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this lemonade, as well.

  • Lemons—or cold pressed fresh lemon juice from the grocery store. We’ve found ours in the refrigerated section with the pre-cut fruits. Please do not use the shelf-stable lemon juice from the store—this lemonade recipe won’t taste nearly as lovely if you do that.
  • Cold water—to dilute the lemon juice
  • Simple syrup—I know a lot of lemonade recipes are going to tell you to mix sugar and water together, but I’ve found that having simple syrup on hand makes the process easier and also so you can drink your lemonade faster.

This lemonade is very tart and refreshing. You can add extra simple syrup if you like yours sweeter!

First, juice the lemons. I like to use a citrus juicer or reamer and squeeze the juice directly into a liquid measuring cup that has a fine mesh strainer on top. Why? This prevents pulp and seeds from falling into the lemon juice.

In a pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice with cold water and simple syrup. Stir until combined, then give it a taste. This recipe for homemade lemonade is nice and tart, which is how I like it, so if it’s too tart for you, add a little more simple syrup until it tastes balanced.

Step 1 –В В Add theВ the sugar into a heat proof jug and add the boiling water and stir until the sugar dissolves.

If you don’t have a heat proof jug, then just add it to a pan and you can put it in the jug to serve when it cools down.

Step 2 – NowВ add some cold water and/or ice cubes to dilute it and cool it down.

Step 3 – Next,В add the freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Step 4 – Now you need to taste it to see if it’s to your liking, some people like it a little tart, and others like it very sweet. You can dilute it with a little more water, or add more lemon juice and sugar to taste.

Either way, you’ll be able to squeeze every bit of that deliciousness out of the lemons without any muss or fuss.

Next, add your sugar (white granulated sugar works best) right to the lemon juice before adding any additional water or ice and stir well.

If you do it in this order, the sugar will have a chance to dissolve fully into the lemon juice and then you’ll reduce the chance of leaving sugar at the bottom of your glass when you’re finished.

To make a “shake-up” version of fair lemonade, place your lemon juice, sugar, and half the amount of water in a tightly lidded jar. Seal. Shake until all the ingredients have combined. Then add the rest of the water. Shake again. Serve over ice. It’s that easy!

Finally, serve up your State Fair Lemonade with a sliced lemon on the rim of the glass. And there you have it – perfectly refreshing lemonade! Enjoy!

How to make fresh squeezed lemonade

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon peel
  • water
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice – you’ll need about 8 to 10 lemons. I use a Citrus Press for best results
  • ice

Instructions

  1. Put 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest into a large jar (at least 1 quart) with a tight fitting lid. Add 1 1/2 cups very hot water and secure lid. Shake jar until sugar dissolves.
  2. Add 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice and put lid back on tightly. Refrigerate until chilled and ready to use.
  3. When ready to serve, you can make a pitcher full of lemonade by pouring 2 cups lemon syrup into a pitcher and adding at least 4 cups cold water. Give it a taste and add more water to your liking.
  4. For single servings, pour 1/4 cup lemon syrup into an 8 ounce or larger glass and add at least a 1/2 cup of cold water. Add more water as desired. I like mine tart, so the measurements given should yield a lemonade that will make you pucker up! Enjoy!
