  • My friend got a Mac and got rid of her PC without transferring her iTunes library and her ripped CDs. She has an iPod Classic with all of her ripped CDs on it. She also still owns the CDs. Without re-ripping all the CDs, is there a way to mount the iPod as a hard drive and retrieve the songs back into iTunes?

I get two options when hooking up the iPod to iTunes:

    1) Sync the iPod to iTunes which it says will remove all content on the iPod and replace it.

    2) View the device in iTunes and play the songs, but I cannot drag them onto the hard drive and then into iTunes.

I want to get the songs off the iPod Classic and into iTunes so they will sync to the iPod from here on out. Is there a way to do this without re-ripping all the CDs? I searched the forums for “iPod Classic” and “recover songs” but no hits. Sorry if this is a duplicate thread. I’ve seen third-party software that claims to do this sort of thing but it does not look like trustworthy software from reputable developers so I am reluctant to purchase and download any of these tools.

Incidentally, the Mac is running Lion. I found instructions that indicated command-line stuff you could do to get the Mac to recognize the iPod as a hard drive but trying to run those commands in the Lion terminal yielded a message saying the commands were not recognized.

Ok, so you have an iPod Classic (80, 120 or 160 GB), or a Nano (3G or 4G should work, can’t speak for the newer models). You have done something bad to it, like changing the firmware or deleting something you shouldn’t have deleted, and you want to bring it to life? Great, that’s the article you’re looking for!

First, you should try restoring it with iTunes. But it probably won’t recognise it, unless you put it in DFU mode. Here’s a video on how to achieve this:

Then use iTunes’ Restore option. It should actually ask you to do it, just accept it and it would be back to life in a minute or two.

But, . it doesn’t work! What should I do? It’s BROKEN!

    Calm down, and keep reading.

    • An iPod (Classic – also known as iPod 6G/7G) (It works for Nanos, but the files are different!)
    • Computer with Windows (Linux tutorial coming soon, it’s mostly the same except that you don’t need to care about drivers, but need to build ipodscsi from source)
    • Patience
    1. You put the iPod into DFU mode
    2. You send the first stage of the restore firmware (called “WTF”) to the iPod using mks5lboot
    3. The iPod reconnects with a different USB IDs
    4. You send the second stage of the restore firmware (called “FIRMWARE”) to the iPod using mks5lboot
    5. The iPod shows a monochrome disk mode screen
    6. You repartition the hard disk, upload the new firmware and reboot the iPod – all these three at once using ipodscsi
    7. Your iPod is working again. Yay!

You’re ready? Ok, let’s do it!

There’s also a video of (almost) the whole procedure. The commands are longer, because I have the files in different directories. Also, it doesn’t show USB driver installation, because I already have them installed.

The video is outdated, showing the old procedure (using Python/pyusb and ipoddfu.py).

Putting the iPod into DFU mode

    1. Get an USB to iPod dock cable.
    2. Connect it to your computer.
    3. Get your iPod.
    4. Lock the HOLD switch, then unlock it after a second.
    5. Connect the USB cable to the iPod.
    6. During the next two steps, disregard what happens on the iPod’s screen, just do what we ask you to.
    7. Hold down MENU + SELECT (the center button) for 12 seconds (count to 12, just to be sure that your timing is right).
    8. Release the buttons.
    9. You’re in DFU mode.

Uploading the first restore stage (WTF)

“What the f*ck”? No, probably means Writing The Firmware or Waiting for The Firmware – we never found out. Who cares, anyway.

    1. Press the Start menu button.

    2. Type cmd and press Enter.

    3. In the black window that opens, type cd Desktop and press Enter.

    4. Download one of these files to your Desktop, depending on the Windows version you have (x86 = 32 bit, x64 = 64-bit): mks5lboot32.exe OR mks5lboot64.exe (Right-click, then choose Save link as. ).

    5. And this one too, from Apple’s servers: x12230000_Recovery.ipsw (I hope they won’t delete it at some point, because we can’t legally host it on our server).

    6. Go to your desktop, and rename the ipsw file to zip.

    7. Use your favourite tool to extract the zip, WinZip, WinRAR and 7-zip will do it well, even Windows’ integrated ZIP extractor will do.

    8. Open the extracted folder, and go to Firmware -> dfu. There should be a file named WTF.x1223.RELEASE.dfu there. Copy it to the desktop.

Please note that the commands here are for the 32-bit version, which should work on all Windows versions – if you choose to use the 64-bit version, please enter mks5lboot64.exe instead of mks5lboot32.exe in the following commands!

    9. Back in the black window, type: (or copy/paste)

    and press Enter.

You should see a message similar to the following, showing that your iPod is detected. If not, please ask for support and do not continue.

    10. Enter the following command:

You should see the following output:

If you see something different, stop here. Otherwise, go ahead.

Uploading the second restore stage (FIRMWARE)

    1. Enter the following command:

You should see the following output:

    2. On the line that has a “found” text, look for the USB Product ID. It is the four symbols after the text PID_. In this example, it’s 1245 which means a Classic 2G (120GB)

    3. Download one of the following files, depending on your iPod’s model/product ID.

    • For Classic 1G (USB PID 1241), download x12410000_Recovery.ipsw.
    • For Classic 2G (USB PID 1245), download x12450000_Recovery.ipsw.
    • For Classic 3G (USB PID 1247), download x12470000_Recovery.ipsw.

    4. As before, rename it to zip and extract it.

    5. Go inside the folder Firmware -> dfu, and copy the file to your desktop. It should be named FIRMWARE.x****.RELEASE.dfu where **** is the USB ID of your iPod at the moment.

    6 Enter the following command:

and press Enter. You should see the following output:

After 10-20 seconds, you should see an Apple logo on the screen, and after a couple more second a white screen with a stop sign and text Do not disconnect at the bottom. Windows might want to reformat it, say No if it does. Continue to the next step.

    Final step: Install Apple’s firmware

    1. You’re almost there. Go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and download the latest firmware for your iPod model.
    2. As you might have guessed, you need to rename the ipsw to zip, and extract it.
    3. In that folder, you’ll find a file named Firmware-XX-X.X.X (X’s depending on the model and version). Copy it to the desktop.
    4. Download ipodscsi.exe to your desktop.
    5. Open Windows Explorer, and look for your iPod. It should be in the Removable drives section. Take a note of its drive letter (e.g. F:).
    6. Open the black window, and type:

Your iPod will reboot. You’ll see a black screen with an Apple logo, and a progress bar at the bottom. Then it will again, show you another Apple logo for a while, and finally start Apple’s firmware.

It should be safe to format it at this point. Use FAT32 as filesystem. Windows isn’t going to allow you format large devices with FAT32, so you might need to use a third-party tool. FAT32 Format is a good choice.

Then use iTunes to manage your music/videos. Or install Rockbox.

Selectively restoring / updating your iPod / iPhone to a manually downloaded IPSW file

How to manually recover music from your ipod

Owners of an iPhone or iPod update / restore their software using Apple-provided IPSW files that only work in iTunes. Well, not really, some of them work with jailbreak tools like Blackra1n and PwnageTool, but that’s another story. Apple says that the only legit way to update one’s iPhone’s / iPod’s software is by downloading it via iTunes, yet many websites out there offer free downloads even for iPod touch IPSWs.

Whichever way you choose to ultimately obtain your update / restore file, the process of updating / restoring your device to it is basically the same. And it’s very simple, actually. You don’t even need to follow a guide, or anything like that, although Apple has provided several, just in case something goes wrong. Considering that you’re all set up with the necessary software and hardware requirements, once you have your appropriate IPSW file at hand, here’s what you do to restore your device to it.

Note: restoring an iPhone/ iPod to a new IPSW file will erase all data and install the new version of the device’s OS over it. We encourage you to make a backup of your content before proceeding with the update / restoration process.

1 – Launch iTunes (make sure iTunes is up-to-date) 2 – Connect device to computer 3 – Select your device in the list (e.g.: Filip’s iPhone) 4 – click the “summary” tab 5 – hold the Alt key (on Mac OS X) / the Shift key (on Windows) and hit “restore” (as shown in the screenshot below) 6 – iTunes will show a dialog allowing you to select the IPSW file you want your device restored to 7- select the IPSW firmware bundle you want to restore to and hit “choose” 8- be patient and wait for the installation process to be completed by iTunes

How to manually recover music from your ipod

Important note: Softpedia does not encourage downloading iPhone / iPod update / restoration files from the Internet. Apple is the only legit source of IPSW downloads. Unfortunately, the company allows customers to download the latest version of the software only, but device owners can choose to save the older IPSW files they’ve previously downloaded and use them to revert to an older version.

iTunes enhances Apple’s media software in a number of ways. It is used mostly for managing audio and video content for your PC or Mac. If you sync your iPod with iTunes, all of the music on the iPod will be replaced with the music that is available on the computer that you’re using. This is especially problematic if you want to use multiple computers to sync your iPod. If you wish to keep all your music and stop this from happening, this article will help you.

A corrupted file is a damaged computer file that fails to open or show some errors when you try to open. How to delete corrupted files? How to recover some corrupted files? .

In recent years, online music has been retooled and more tightly controlled in an attempt to ensure that people get their fair share of the music profits pie. Apple and its online megastore iTunes have led the pack. Because of its stature and booming sales, Apple must maintain a delicate relationship with its content providers to charge enough to keep everyone happy and, above all, protect against piracy.

Music and entertainment companies are loath to toss their content out like yesterday’s bagels to be gobbled up by the voracious public. The mere mention of the now-revamped service “Napster” is enough to send a shiver up the spine of many a record executive. Likewise, pirated content on the Web is a major thorn in the side of today’s entertainment industry. Legal efforts from the Recording Industry Association of America and the Federal Communications Commission have shut down major pirating Web sites. Then, the advent of the iPod in 2001 introduced a potential new way to illegally share music. Irresistibly portable with as much storage space as a three-car garage, iPods could conceivably make the war on pirating an impossible venture.

Steve Jobs and the other brains at Apple realized this. For the iPod and especially iTunes to succeed, the company had to reassure content providers that their property would be safe. There’s a reason why every new iPod comes labeled with the commandment the stealing music is wrong. That’s also why the road between iTunes and the iPod is (at least in theory) a one-way street. You can load up your iPod with new music from iTunes till the cows come home. But dumping the music from your iPod onto iTunes or a computer hard drive isn’t as rote.

Despite what some record industry bigwigs may believe, not everyone is desperately seeking free music. And Apple realizes that accidents happen. Hard drives crash. Computers end up at the bottom of swimming pools, in the hands of thieves or in deserted hotel rooms thousands of miles from home. Indeed, there are plenty of law-abiding, upright reasons to want to retrieve music from your iPod.

In that glorious light of openness and honesty, HowStuffWorks — with plenty of help from Apple — offers a few avenues for transferring music that is rightfully, legally yours from an iPod onto your computer.

    iTunes Music Settings

Manipulating the iPod for something it isn’t intended for — transferring music to a computer — is naturally a bit harder than finding your favorite Madonna album to jam to during a workout. For that reason, it’s helpful to understand a few basic settings and functions before you start to hunt down music files within your iPod hard drive. Particularly if you’re looking to refill an empty iTunes library, these tips can prevent you from losing your music.

There are three ways that iTunes can communicate with your iPod:

    • Automatic updates: iTunes automatically adds new downloads to the iPod whenever connected.
    • Auto update select playlists: iTunes automatically downloads new playlists to the iPod whenever connected.
    • Manually manage: You tell iTunes what and when to update the iPod.

When recovering an iTunes library, only work in manual sync mode. In an auto sync library, iTunes will begin updating your iPod without prior warning. To stop the program from auto syncing, hold down SHIFT+CTRL (on Windows) or CMD+OPT (on a Mac) until the iPod icon appears in the source list [source: Hollington].

Apple tossed out a bone when it came out with the Transfer Purchase feature on iTunes 7. Beginning with that version of the program, users could automatically transfer songs they purchased from iTunes from their iPods to authorized computers. To play content that you buy through an iTunes account, you must authorize the computer with your iTunes username and password.

Another new feature is iTunes Plus. Downloads included in this program have no digital rights management (DRM) encryption. That means you can transfer them to as many iPods, computers and CDs you desire.

But let’s say you want to transfer purchases you bought on a Mac to a PC. Mac-formatted iPods aren’t compatible with Windows operating systems. If you’re working between systems with a classic, nano or mini device, it’s helpful to know which one your iPod is formatted for. To find this, select About in the iPod’s Settings menu. If you scroll to the bottom of a screen, you’ll see either a list of serial numbers that denotes a Mac format or Format: Windows [source: Apple].

Now that we know a little more about how the iPod functions, it’s time to learn how to use it to transport files.
