How to print double sided documents on any printer

Printing double-sided is a no-brainer move. You lower your printer’s energy use and save on paper, which ultimately saves trees. Plus, if you’re printing a large project, you only have to carry around half the weight.

Despite there being plenty of advantages to printing projects double-sided, it is not the default setting on your PC. Luckily, Windows gives users the option to set duplex printing in two different ways. You can either select double-sided printing for each job in the print window settings or set duplex printing as your device’s default preference through the Settings app on your Windows PC.

Not all printers have duplex printing capabilities, so you’ll need to check your printer manual or contact your printer manufacturer to make sure you can print double-sided. If your printer doesn’t double-sided printing capabilities, you won’t see the option to adjust it.

If you already know your printing device has double-sided printing available, here’s how to do it on a Windows PC.

How to print double-sided for a single print job on a Windows PC

1. Open the document you want to print and select “File.”

2. Choose “Print.”

3. In the print menu, click the hyperlink that says, “More settings.”

4. In the window that appears, click the dropdown menu labeled “Duplex Printing.”

5. If available, choose one of the “print double-sided” options. “Flip on long edge” means that the pages will flip like a book — “flip on short edge” means they will flip like a notepad.

6. Select “OK.”

7. Click “Print.”

How to set double-sided printing as your default on a Windows PC

1. Click the “Start” button.

2. Scroll until you see the “Settings” app, then select it.

3. Choose “Devices.”

4. Click “Printers & Scanners.”

5. Select the printing device you plan to use.

6.Click the “Manage” or “Manage Your Device” option from the dropdown menu that appears.

7. Select the “Printing Preferences” link from the left-hand column.

8. A dialogue window should appear. Select the “Printing Shortcut” tab.

9. If your printer has a duplexing unit and can automatically print on both sides, select “Two-sided Duplex Printing” from the “Printing Shortcuts” box.

10. If you have to manually feed paper into your printer to print on both sides, select “User Specified Print Settings.”

11. Select the “Print on both sides manually” dropdown and choose between “Flip on Long Edge” or “Flip on Short Edge.”

Whether you’re frugal, environmentally conscious, or you just don’t like running out of paper all the time, double-sided printing is a good choice. Double-sided printing is also called duplex printing.

Most laser and many inkjet printers have a duplex function. But you can print double-sided from your Mac even if your printer doesn’t have this feature. Double-sided printing is available in most programs on your Mac, including Word, Excel, Pages, and Preview, as well as most internet browsers.

Here are two ways to print your documents double-sided from a Mac:

If your printer can handle double-sided printing, follow these steps:

1. Click on the File menu at the top of your screen, to the right of the Apple icon. Choose Print. You can also go straight to the Print window by hitting Command + P. If printing from Google Chrome, you’ll then also need to click “Print Using System Dialogue.”

2. If there is a button at the bottom of the window that appears that says “Show Details,” click it.

3. Click on the box below Presets or Orientation and choose “Layout” from the menu that drops down.

5. Click on the box next to two-sided printing. Choose the style of double-sided printing you prefer.

6. Long-Edge binding will print both sides with the same page orientation. Short-Edge binding will print the top of the pages at opposite edges of the paper. The short-edge option is useful if you need to flip up the page to read the other side. Otherwise, choose long-edge binding.

7. Select the rest of your print options and click Print.

The print options you set will carry over to your next print job. Remember to go into Layout and turn off double-sided printing if you want to print something single-sided.

Double-sided printing tricks for a non-duplex printer

If your printer feeder can’t handle double-sided printing, you can still use both sides of the paper.

If you want your documents to come out double-sided, you can do that with a little extra effort.

1. Open the Print window in the document you want to print double-sided.

2. Click on the box below Presets or Orientation and choose “Paper Handling.”

3. Click the box next to “Pages to Print.” “All Pages” is the default. Change that to “Odd Only.”

4. Print your document. You’ll get pages 1, 3, 5, etc.

5. Turn your printed pages over and put them back in the paper tray.

6. Open the Print window again and go to the Paper Handling menu.

7. For Pages to Print, choose “Even Only.”

8. Print your document. Your even pages will print on the back of your odd pages.

This approach can involve a little bit of trial and error, as you learn how to load the odd pages the right way to print double-sided. Experiment with a couple of pages first, before you print a large document.

One more caveat: You can’t feed a piece of paper that’s already been printed on through some laser printers without jamming them, because paper can’t handle going through their printing process twice. This is a more common issue with older laser printers; most newer ones allow duplex printing. You can safely put your paper twice through any inkjet printer, since no heat is involved in the inkjet printing process.

Printing on both sides of paper is called duplex printing. Most printers offer the option of automatically printing on both sides of a sheet of paper (automatic duplex printing). Other printers provide instructions so that you can manually reinsert pages to print the second side (manual duplex printing). At first, find out from your printer manual or manufacturer if your printer can print on both sides of paper (duplex printing).

Find out whether your printer supports automatic duplex printing

To find out whether your printer supports duplex printing, you can check your printer manual or consult your printer manufacturer, or you can do the following:

Click the File tab.

Under Settings, click Print One Sided. If Print on Both Sides is available, your printer is set up for duplex printing.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

If you are printing to a combination copy machine and printer, and the copy machine supports two-sided copying, it probably supports automatic duplex printing.

If you have more than one printer installed, it is possible that one printer supports duplex printing and another printer does not.

Set up a printer to print to both sides of a sheet of paper

If your printer doesn’t support automatic duplex printing, you have two other options. You can use manual duplex printing, or you can print the odd and even pages separately.

Print by using manual duplex

If your printer does not support automatic duplex printing, you can print all of the pages that appear on one side of the paper and then, after you are prompted, turn the stack over and feed the pages into the printer again.

In Word, do the following:

Click the File tab.

Under Settings, click Print One Sided, and then click Manually Print on Both Sides.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

When you print, Word will prompt you to turn over the stack to feed the pages into the printer again.

Note: When you print with the manual duplex option, you might want to run a test to determine the correct way to reload the pages for the printer you’re using.

Print odd and even pages

You can also use the following procedure to print on both sides:

Click the File tab.

Under Settings, click Print All Pages. Near the bottom of the gallery, click Only Print Odd Pages.

Click the Print button at the top of the gallery.

After the odd pages are printed, flip the stack of pages over, and then under Settings, click Print All Pages. At the bottom of the gallery, click Only Print Even Pages.

Click the Print button at the top of the gallery.

Note: To make sure that pages print in the correct order when printing odd or even pages, click File, Options, Advanced, and under Print, click either Print on front of the sheet for duplex printing or Print on back of the sheet for duplex printing.

Important: Office 2007 is no longer supported. Upgrade to Microsoft 365 to work anywhere from any device and continue to receive support.

Find out whether your printer supports automatic duplex printing

You can use the following methods to determine whether a specific printer supports duplex printing:

Check your printer manual or consult your printer manufacturer.

In Microsoft Office Word, click the Microsoft Office Button How to print double sided documents on any printer, click Print, click Properties, and then click the tabs in the Document Properties dialog box and review the options. The options in the Document Properties dialog box vary depending on your printer options and configuration. If you see options on any of the tabs for printing on both sides of the paper, duplex printing, or two-sided printing, the printer probably supports automatic duplex printing.

If your printer supports duplex printing, follow the directions in the printer manual to create duplex copies.

If you are printing to a combination copy machine and printer, and the copy machine supports two-sided copying, it probably supports automatic duplex printing.

If you have more than one printer installed, it is possible that one printer supports duplex printing and another printer does not.

If your printer doesn’t support automatic duplex printing, you have two other options. You can use manual duplex printing, or you can print the odd and even pages separately.

Print by using manual duplex

If your printer does not support automatic duplex printing, you can select the Manual duplex check box in the Print dialog box. Microsoft Office Word will print all of the pages that appear on one side of the paper and then prompt you to turn the stack over and feed the pages into the printer again.

Print odd and even pages

You can also use the following procedure to print on both sides:

How to print double sided documents on any printer

Note: Please assume duplex printing = double side printing, for all intents & purposes of this post.

With the entire world going more digital, the need for printing has indeed reduced; albeit, not entirely eliminated. And despite the fact that it may not excite you much when it comes to sustainability & Eco-friendliness, it doesn’t mean that you cannot contribute further to a greener Earth.

When it comes to printing, commonly, there is single sided printing, or double-sided, or often called duplex printing (some may argue on the technical definition though; more below in the FAQs).

In any case, double sided printing makes the best use of your printing paper, where it utilizes both the front and the back. Traditionally, a printer could only print on one side, so for example, if you had to print 2 pages, you’d need 2 pieces of paper. With double-sided capability or duplex, you’d only need 1 piece of printing paper.

How to Print Double Sided on Windows 10

For this post’s purposes, we’re talking about automatic double-sided printing on Windows 10, without manual interference. As common sense would dictate, you could still print on both sides by manually inserting the same paper again — even on a printer that doesn’t have this feature.

Coming back to the premise, know that just because your printer has that functionality built-in, doesn’t mean it’ll always behave that way, as the setting to print double sided might be disabled.

To enable, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open Printers and Scanners System Settings

From your start menu, search for “printers & scanners,” to open the system settings app.

How to print double sided documents on any printerAs shown, search for “printers & scanners.”

Step 2: Find Your Default Printer, Choose “Manage,” and From There, Go to “Printing Preferences”

Next, from the system settings window, locate your default printer, and select manage.

How to print double sided documents on any printerFind your printer, and select “Manage.”

Afterwards, select “printing preferences” from the subsequent window.

How to print double sided documents on any printerAs a result of clicking on “manage,” you’ll get the additional choice of “printing preferences.”

Step 3: Choose ‘Flip on Long Edge’ or ‘Flip on Short Edge’

First, let’s discuss the obvious elephant in the room.

What is the difference between flip on long edge and flip on short edge?

Plainly put, the idea behind flip on long edge is that you’d want to flip your pages like you would a regular book or a magazine. (Imagine flipping a page from right to left). Flip on short edge conversely, means you’d want to flip your pages bottom to top (like you would on a calendar or a vertical paperback notepad).

If that sounds confusing, just remember this:

  1. For regular portrait style printing, select flip on long edge
  2. For landscape style printing, select the other.
  3. If you aren’t sure, your best bet would likely be to go with the long edge route.

In any event, to choose between the two, once you’ve clicked on printing preferences, a new window will open, that’ll amongst others, will also ask you on how you’d want to print on both sides. The answer, is either of the two choices discussed.

How to print double sided documents on any printerAs illustrated, elect either of the two possibilities.

To finalize the setting, hit Apply, and then hit OK, to ensure the changes can take effect.

A Few FAQs

Technically speaking, the process is the same. However, you can quickly get to the printing preferences directly from Adobe Acrobat by going to File > Print > Properties. Here, you can decide between the flip on long edge and short edge.

To turn it off, from your printer preferences setting, under the heading of “print on both sides manually,” opt for ‘none.’ Then, apply and OK, to update your printer settings.

From my understanding, duplex printing refers more to the technology itself (as printers have a duplexing unit), while double sided printing, refers to the actual occurrence.

Conclusion

In Windows 10, if you ever need to configure your double sided printing, you’d have to eventually work with your printer’s printing preferences. And worse case, say your printer doesn’t have the competence to perform this task, you can always duplex print manually.

A couple of added benefits to double sided/duplex printing are:

  1. Less use of resources.
  2. In some cases, faster printing times, as you may think otherwise.
  3. Comes in especially handy for bulk printing situations. Imagine the amount of paper you’re saving and actual psychical space because of a lesser quantity of actual papers.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

Printers that can scan pages of text or images and turn them into a pdf or other workable document format on your computer or mobile device are here to make our lives easier. But, efficiency doesn’t always come naturally. It’s helpful to know some tips on how to scan double-sided documents on your hp printer.

Does My HP Printer Scan Double-Sided Documents?

Most HP printers, especially the all-in-one units, are able to scan documents easily and even support double-sided scanning documents. However, not all do so automatically. Not every model is going to support scanning both sides automatically through the Automatic Document Feeder ADF feature.

The best way to scan double-sided documents on an HP printer is to first make sure the specific printer model is equipped to do so. Next, make sure the printer is set up properly by visiting HP online at support. To download any HP software or drivers, go to support.hp.com. You have the option of using a CD or downloading directly to your computer.

How To Scan Double-Sided Documents on HP Printers

Two basic methods for scanning any document include:

  1. Manually
  2. Using the ADF

When scanning a document, you can manually place it on the printer glass face down and then flip it to scan the other side. But, if you have a lot of double-sided pages to scan, the automatic features are going to be so much more efficient.

Scanning Using the Automatic Document Feeder ADF

If the document has several pages and your printer allows it, the most efficient way to scan both sides is to use the automatic document feeder, ADF.

Before using the app or computer software to scan two-sided pages, you will need to change the option in the HP scanning software to indicate you’re using the Automatic Document Feeder ADF. Otherwise, the software will assume you will be doing it manually using the flatbed glass on the printer. To do this:

  1. Under “Type” select “Document”
  2. In “Source” choose “Document Feeder”
  3. Select “Scan both sides of page”
  4. Hit “Continue”

There are several HP printers that have this option, but not every model comes equipped to do so. Check the manual, listed in the printer specs or the HP support pages to be sure your model is capable of double-sided scans.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Please know that even though some HP printers allow you to use the ADF to scan quickly, it is not completely hands-off. When the stack has finished scanning, you will need to manually reinsert the document to scan the second side.

Follow this 7-step process:

  1. Place the pages in the ADF input tray face up and the first page on top. Adjust the paper guides to center the stack of paper.
  2. Make sure the top of the page is pointing toward the document feeder.
  3. Put the scanner in Duplex mode by sliding the Duplex switch to the left. The switch is near the ADF on the left side.
  4. Open the HP Solution Center, and click Start – Programs – HP – HP Solution Center – Scan Document – Scan
  5. If you are using the app, select Print/Scan
  6. When the stack of pages has made it through the scanning process, do not flip but simply rotate the stack, 180 degrees and load them back into the ADF tray
  7. When the scan has finished, click Done.

Manually Scan

Of course, you can always manually scan the pages. If the document doesn’t contain too many pages, this may not be a bad option.

Using the HP Scanning Software App

The most efficient way to accomplish any document scanning task is to download and use the HP scanning software or app.

The best way to scan double-sided documents, especially those with several pages, is to either select the scanning option from the interactive menu panel on the printer or download and use the HP Smart app. Before you can download or use the software or app, you will need to set up a free HP user account.

If you prefer using a mobile device, select the HP Smart app in the Apple Store or from the Play Store. To easily operate your HP printer from a mobile device, download the HP Smart app from the Apple Store for iPhones and iPads, or the Play Store for Androids.

From the app, choose Print/Scan and select options. Make sure you select the Scan option and not the HP Easy Scan option if you want to scan double-sided pages.

Final Thoughts

To scan double-sided documents on your HP printer, first make sure your model is equipped to do so. Download the necessary HP software, drivers, or app, and walk through the process. Whether your printer handles scanning double-sided documents through the ADF or manually, be sure to follow these helpful tips for how to scan double-sided documents on an HP printer.

2. Click on the box below Presets or Orientation and choose “Paper Handling”.

How To Print Double Sided PDF

Portable Document Format or a PDF is a file format developed by Adobe Systems that is used to utilize computer documents independent of any software or hardware specific standards. A PDF file can be used in Windows, Mac, and Linux without having to meet special requirements. A PDF file embeds and encapsulates everything within a document upon rendering.

Graphics, charts, layout, text, format, fonts and all other data within a document is embed as is or seen on display. When the PDF is open by another user it formats and displays exactly as originally rendered. This is why it is one of the most widely used formats in desktop publishing, and office use. You can also save a PDF file as image or editable which makes it easy to make changes.

Printing Double Sided PDF requires minor setup adjustments verses if you were to simple print single sided normal PDF files. Printing Double Sided PDF will save you paper, money, but also help reduce decline in print quality.

To open and print your PDF file you will require Adobe Reader, a free software from Adobe that is used to work PDF files. Simply open your PDF file using Adobe Reader.

Once your PDF file is set to print, click File from the top menu and select Print. The Print dialog box should appear. In the Printer filed select the printer that you wish to use.

If your printer supports Duplex Printing, click on the Properties button next to the printer you selected to use. Next select the Printing Shortcuts tab and choose Two-Sided Duplex Printing. On the right hand side you will now see a list of drop down menus.

Click on Print on both sides and choose Manual. Click OK and click on Print. If your printer has a duplex feature it will print odd number pages first. To figure out which side your printer prints on first, you can run a simple test by writing a letter on top of blank sheet of paper.

After your printer has printed the odd pages first using the duplex feature, keep the pages in order and insert them back through the feeder with the printed and the opposite side of the page facing up if your printer prints face down. Next continue to print the even pages to finish your double sided printing.

If your printer does not have a Two-Sided Duplex Printing feature, check the Reverse pages under More Options. In the Subset field select Odd pages only. Click OK to print the odd pages first. Once the odd pages are printed, reload them with printed side facing up if your printer prints face down or facing down if your printer prints face up.

From the File menu select Print again. Check the Reverse pages box and under Subset select Even pages only. Press OK to complete your double sided PDF printing.

Double-sided printing gives you the option to format documents into a paper-saving and readable version to use or share with others. This style of printing can help you complete files in a professional way for readers. Learning how to accomplish this through Microsoft Word makes it easier to print this kind of document to meet your personal and professional needs. In this article, we provide instructions for printing double-sided documents in Word on both a Mac and a PC, with tips for using this feature.

What is double-sided printing in Microsoft Word?

Double-sided printing is a formatting technique used to reduce the number of printed pages needed to print a full document or selections from a file. Double-sided printing also allows you to read text on the front and back of one page. Many printers support automatic printing, and the device itself flips the pages to print on both sides. Some machines require users to manually turn over the pages and reinsert them into the device to complete a double-sided printing.

Benefits of printing double-sided in Word

Printing a Word document double-sided is helpful for saving time and resources. Printing a double-sided document saves paper by printing fewer pages, often finishing in the same time or quicker than single-sided pages. It also allows users to print documents for publication in both personal and professional settings. For example, you can create and format a booklet in Word and use double-sided printing to complete the project before adding a binding.

How to print double-sided in Word for a PC

Follow these steps to print a double-sided document in Microsoft Word on a PC:

    1. Open the file you want to print

Choose the document you plan to print from your saved files. Open the file and check to make sure the formatting is consistent and correct before you print. Save any unfinished work or updates.

    2. Navigate to print settings

To open print settings, select the “File” tab in the top left corner of your document. This opens a drop-down box with a range of options. Choose the “Print” tab from the list. You can find the tab about halfway down the list of items.

    3. Change the print settings

Once you open the “Print” menu, the top tab under settings is automatically set to “Print All Pages.” If you need to print only a selection of pages double-sided, this is the first setting to adjust. Enter the range of pages you want to print by typing the first page number followed by a dash, then the last page number. If you want to print multiple page ranges, you can adjust this setting each time.

Next, find the tab below that reads “Print One-Sided.” Word defaults to this setting. To select double-sided printing, click on the arrow to open the drop-down box. You can now choose from three options of double-sided printing:

Flip pages on long edge: This is a typical double-sided setting for documents that print content like a book.

Flip pages on short edge: This setting is typically only used for specific manuscript formatting when binding items at the top of the page.

Manually print on both sides: Use this setting to manually turn pages over before resuming if your printer doesn’t support automatic double-sided printing.

    4. Print the document

You’re now ready to print the document, unless you want to make any other changes to the print settings, such as collating the pages or adjusting the orientation. Check to make sure the correct double-sided print setting is selected. Finally, click the “Print” tab at the top of the menu.

How to print double-sided in Word for a Mac

Follow these steps to print a double-sided document in Microsoft Word on a Mac:

    1. Open the print menu

Open the document you want to print. Check for correct formatting and content and save any updates. Under the “File” menu, choose “Print.”

    2. Select double-sided print settings

Once you’re in the “Print” menu, select the “Copies and Pages” tab. Next, choose “Layout” from the drop-down menu. Word gives you two options for double-sided printing on a Mac:

Short-edge binding: This type of formatting prints in a style helpful for flip-books with binding at the top of a page.

Long-edge binding: Most double-sided printing uses this format because it reads like a book with binding in the center.

    3. Print the document

Ensure you’ve made all the necessary changes to the print settings. Check the formatting by previewing the document as needed. Finally, select the “Print” button to print your document.

    4. Manually print double-sided if necessary

If your Mac doesn’t support automatic double-sided printing, you may not see the previous options for short or long-edge binding. You can still print double-sided if you select “Copies and Pages,” followed by “Microsoft Word” under the “Print” menu. Next, select “Odd Pages Only” and print the document. Once these pages are complete, follow the same process, but instead choose “Even Pages Only.” After printing using both of these options, you have a completed double-sided manuscript to use.

Tips for double-sided printing in Word

Here are some ideas to help you maximize your use of double-sided printing for Word documents:

Check your printer. Some printers don’t support automatic double-sided printing options. If you need to print a long document, it may be helpful to find another printer or be prepared to manually switch the page sides before you start the printing setup.

Test it first. It’s a good idea to print a test page to check the double-sided formatting before printing the entire document. This ensures you selected the correct settings and won’t need to reprint the file and waste paper.

Consider page numbers. Before you print, determine if you want to insert page numbers to help you navigate the document. You can find options for including page numbers under the “Insert” tab on the far right side of the Word document under the “Page Numbers” tab.

Print selected pages. You can still print double-sided on a select number of pages. This saves paper and allows you to focus on a specific part of a document.

Use a commercial printer. If you’re trying to print double-sided at work, you may need to use a commercial printer. If it doesn’t already print double-sided, try navigating to the ribbon function to choose printing options.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

If the document contains pages with different original sizes, page breaks may occur.

Printing on both sides of paper sheet is sometimes necessary but it should always be a habit because it is good for our environment. By saving paper, we save trees and in turn we protect our environment. However sometimes, especially when duplex printer is not available, people wonder how to print on both sides of paper. Lets have a look at the solution of this problem.

Printing on Both Sides Without Duplex Printer (e.g. Canon LBP 2900B)

Canon LBP 2900B printer is not a duplex printer so it can not flip the paper on it’s own. In case you have printer that is not capable of automatically flipping the paper, in most of the printer models you’re given the option of printing on both the sides; but you’ll have to do manual flipping.

The best way to print on both the sides is to first print the odd numbered pages of your document. Once this is done, you take the printed papers, flip the stack and again insert it in the paper tray. Now you give command to print even numbered pages. Here are the steps in this process:

    • Go to File menu and then select Print.
    • Print dialog box will come up. In this box select Odd pages from Print dropdown option.
    • Click OK to print all the pages in document that have odd numbers.
    • Once printing of odd numbered pages is done, flip the stack of printed pages and put them back in tray.
    • Again open Print dialog box, and this time select Even pages for printing.
    • Click OK to commence printing of even page.

    Print” src=”https://techwelkin.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/print-dialog-box.jpg” width=”490″ height=”402″ srcset=”https://techwelkin.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/print-dialog-box.jpg 490w, https://techwelkin.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/print-dialog-box-300×246.jpg 300w” sizes=”(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px” /> Print dialog box which comes up when you select File > Print

IMPORTANT TIP: When you are manually flipping paper for printing on the other side, you should not forget to rotate it before putting it back into the paper tray. Rotation means the top edge of the paper should become the bottom edge –but the orientation of the paper should not change (i.e. if you’re printing in portrait layout –let it be so, don’t change it to landscape and vice versa)

Some non-duplex printers also give you an option of printing both sides in sequence (i.e. without issuing two separate commands for even and odd pages). But for this you’ll have to flip each page individually. It would be like: print first page on one side, flip it over, print on the other side, print second page on one side, flip it over… so on and so forth. If you’re printing a 50 page document –it will be a very tedious job. The better way out is to use one-command-for-even and one-command-for-odd pages.

But if you really want to use this one command (but tedious) method –and if your printer supports this feature –you will find an option for it in Printer Properties dialog box.

ANOTHER TIP: How to create in MS-Word (and therefore print) some pages in landscape and some pages in portrait layout.

Now let’s also cover how dual side printing it done using duplex printers.

Nowadays a large number of printer models do have duplex ability. This means that the printer is capable of automatically flipping the paper and print on both sides of it. You can select option for duplex printing from the Print dialog box (this box comes up when you press CTRL + P or select Print from File menu)

How to know if you have a duplex printer

There is not straightforward way to know whether your printer supports duplex printing. This is because different printer manufacturers use different settings for various models. So, you’ll need to do a tiny bit of look around to know about your printer’s capability.

First of all check your printer’s body –you may find a label indicating the duplex capability of the printer.

If you have not already put it in dustbin, you should check the user manual of your printer. Keeping user manuals of electronic devices is always a good idea –you never know when you may need to consulting them.

If none of this works, you should explore the Printer Properties dialog box. For this, press CTRL + P to pop up the Print dialog box and then click on Properties button. Another dialog box will appear on screen. Go through various tabs of this box and see if you can find an option pointing to duplex capability. Usually duplex printers have an option to turn on and off the ability to print on both the sides. If such an option is present in any of the above-mentioned tabs –you’ll know whether your printer can automatically print on both sides of the paper.

In the Brother printer driver, the option for 2-sided/Duplex print is typically located:

    – Windows: On the Basic tab under 2-sided/Booklet or Duplex/Booklet . This location may vary based on your model machine.

    – Macintosh: Choose “Layout” from the application dropdown list, and then select Two-Sided .

If you’re unable to find these option in your driver, then you’re likely using a generic printer driver.

Many of the features of your Brother machine’s printer are only available if you’re using the Brother Original printer driver (Windows) or the Brother CUPS printer driver (Macintosh). It’s easy to install a generic or third-party driver and miss out on your machine’s full functionality. To determine the type of driver that you’ve installed do the following:

    2. Right-click on the Brother machine and left-click on Printing preferences .

    3. Verify that the driver has an Advanced tab or Support button.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

    – If the driver has the Advanced tab or Support button, then the Brother Original Driver has been fully installed. Click OK to close the dialog box.

    – If the driver is missing these options, or looks like the screenshot below, then the Brother Original driver has not been installed. Click OK to close the dialog box, and go to step 4 below.

Generic Built-in Driver (Does not support all features)

    4. You’re using a bu ilt-in or generic printer driver. It does not have the full capabilities of the Brother Original driver, may be missing options supported by the Brother machine, and may print slower.

To uninstall the generic driver and install the Brother Original Driver, do the following:

    a. Right-click on the Brother printer driver and left-click on Delete or Remove Device (depending on your operating system) .

    b. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the driver.

    c. Reinstall the Brother Original Driver, which can be downloaded from https://support.brother.com. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to add the Brother Original printer driver.

How to print double sided documents on any printerNot all models are compatible with all listed operating systems. To determine your model’s supported operating systems, view the machine’s specifications on our website www.brother-usa.com .

1 . From the Apple Menu or in the Dock, select System Preferences.

2 . Under ” Hardware” click the Printers & Scanners icon (May be Print & Scan or Print & Fax depending on your operating system.)

    3. Click on the Brother printer in the list.

    4. Make sure that the “Kind” listed is a Brother CUPS driver.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

    – If the driver listed is the Brother CUPS driver, then the Brother Original Driver has been fully installed.

    – If the driver states AirPrint, BrScript, or does not specify CUPS, then t he Brother Original driver has not been installed. Go to step 5 below.

    5. You’re using a bu ilt-in or generic printer driver. It does not have the full capabilities of the Brother CUPS driver, may be missing options supported by the Brother machine, and may print slower.

To delete the generic driver, highlight it and click – (minus). Click here for instructions on how to install the Brother CUPS driver.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

On Monday we noticed that all of our multi page print jobs began printing double sided. (This was not happening the previous week).

This is system wide and not isolated to one printer, it is great for Picking Tickets but not great for printing checks 🙂

During the troubleshooting process we have verified all print settings on printers.

Rebooted the “Windows 2012 R2 Print Server” (all print jobs other than X3 are behaving as expected)

This seems to have all of our support channels stumped, so I am reaching out to see if anyone in the community has had a similar issue.

    Thanks in Advance – Shane

Here are the instructions from KB 54344 (also includes changing the paper size):

    1. Setup Destinations, Destinations, Select Printer, Printer management comes up.

    2. Select Properties, and select the default size of the paper to legal, set Source if applicable, and Duplex.

    3. Set Printer destination to new printer.

    4. In Crystal designer, setup Paper Size to Legal, and modify page header to legal size

    5. Print will print duplex and legal.

Note: I’ll add additional wording so that two-sided and double- sided come up in the search.

We had something similar happen after updating printer drivers. Once printer properties on the print server were changed, X3 printed as expected without any change to X3 Destinations. In a few cases, we also had to adjust client settings on their printer properties.

    interocitor,
    Thank You for the reply!
    You are exactly correct.
I have no clue why it would choose to override the settings in X3 and windows in favor of what ever printer happens to be default but it does.

    Best Duplex Printer For Home

Duplex printers are best for saving paper and time. These duplex printers can print on both sides of the page at once, which means that they use less paper than single-sided printing does. This article discusses the best duplex printer for the home. We have researched the best wireless printer with two side printing in the budget range of under US$100-$200. Most of These are wireless all-in-one printers with two-side printing. Also, these are low-budget in one printer for your home.

    Finding the right printer

With the rise of home and office printing, printer manufacturers have responded by offering a wide range of models. You can select from inkjet printers for fast colour pictures or black-and-white documents. Laser ones that produce sharp text while being less susceptible to fading over time due to an aging paper content; even wireless alternatives if you’re always on your feet!

With so many options available in today’s market, the type of printer you need for your business is dependent on several factors, including what it will be used to print and how much room there is in the office.

A central issue when determining which kind may well have something to do with whether or not they are wirelessly capable, so check these before purchasing! If all else fails, you can always go old school by using traditional offset printing equipment instead.

The best printers are right here! You want to make sure you get the most bang for your buck when it comes down to printing, so we’ve put together this list of top-rated models. Whether you need an all-in-one that does scans and copies or something more specific like photo printer/scanners that can produce high-quality prints at fast speeds in both black & white as well colour lab-style images. Thanks to our best printer guide, you’ll never have trouble finding your dream machine again.

How have we chosen these printers?

Printers have been around for a long time, so it’s not surprising that printers from five years ago will be the same as those currently on shelves. Printing resolutions, connectivity, or features haven’t changed much over this period; our printing tests show as such too.

We time the first page out. To measure the quality of a printer, we have printed from every machine. We test each printer we source for testing to make sure they live up to their advertised speed and quality. These tests include text in different fonts and sizes with images mixed throughout it all for color contrast and sharpness displays an array of photos.

We also take overall cost into account, comparing printer functionality and design quality. The score is calculated based on these parameters too. And I hope you like our list of Best Duplex Printer For Home.

I want to print a mini book, of about 8 pages, one one sheet. It should be something along the lines of this, which I have tried. But this is not double sided, so when you are done, you see blank sides in between each page. I have a double sided printer and figure there must be a way to do this so each page is printed front and back. Any templates or instructions?

I’ve done this a lot to print out drafts. I have 2 methods but prefer the 2nd:

In word, Layout > Page Setup (small icon bottom right of ribbon box) > Margins > Pages section > Book fold. Then when I print I’ll use landscape and select “print on both sides”.

In word, save as pdf, then print > booklet (print on both sides selected).

I have an epson printer and both of these methods work okay. If the double sided print still doesn’t print, and the “print preview” looks good, it might be a printer settings problem. The links online will be how to print a booklet (or book fold) in word. However double sided printer problems will depend on the make of the printer.

Alternatively, when I want to print an 8 page booklet on 1 sheet I print double sided on a4 with the text in a6 and use a guillotine. That way each page takes up a quarter of the a4 and the booklet can be formed by cutting the a4 in half portrait. If printing pdf I would use “Multiple”, pages per sheet, 2×2, page order horizontal and check print on both sides. If printing from word I would use the dropdown 4 pages per sheet at the bottom of the print dialogue.

If you are lucky enough to have access to adobe indesign, there is also a file>print booklet 2-up perfect bound option that works like a charm.

uniFLOW printers, or “Uniprintstations”, are multifunction devices/printers (MFDs) that can be accessed in the libraries and student computer areas of all University of Otago campuses. These printers can:

    • Double-sided print and copy
    • Copy and scan in both colour and black and white
    • Print colour and black and white in one document (this will be charged accordingly)
    • Receive print jobs from University-owned student computers or from your own computer or device

You can use the Options button on the printer touchscreen to change the following settings:

    • Color Mode: swap between colour and black & white
    • Copy count: number of copies
    • Duplex: double-sided printing on long or short edge (see below)
    • Page Range: e.g. print only pages 4 to 9

    Printing double-sided/duplex

The best way to print double-sided is to send your print job from the computer as a normal, single-sided job, then change it at the printer.

    On the printer touchscreen:

    1. Select the job you wish to print double-sided.
    2. Press Options.
    3. Under the Duplex option choose Long Edge (for portrait documents) or Short Edge (for landscape documents).
    4. Press Print + Delete.

    Copying

You can use the uniFLOW printer as a photocopier to copy documents:

    4. Click on the green Start button for the printer to scan and then print your documents.
    5. Click the Log out link at the bottom of the screen to log out, and remove your copies and originals when you are finished.

Change any settings by using the options on the screen or by tapping the Options button.

If your page is not A4 the printer will ask you to select a page size. Choose A4 and OK, then press the Start button again.

    Scanning

You can also scan documents on a uniFLOW printer:

There is no cost for scanning.

    Faxing

You can’t send a fax from a uniFLOW printer, but if you need to send a fax you can use the University’s fax service:

It is very annoying to manually change page sides whan you want to print on both sides.

On Windows XP and Vista that have Plug and Play Print Driver Package HP drivers installed, there is an easy to find option (Two-sided Printing) under Print > Preferences > Printing Shortcuts tab.

Unfortunately, on Windows 7 the only driver available is the one coming with Windows 7 but there is no such tab and the closest option to it, is to print duplex manually.

But you don’t need to search for additional HP printer drivers, Windows 7 already has support for both side printing, it only needs to be turned on!

So here are the steps to fix this:

    1) Click on Start
    2) Click on “Devices and Printers”
    3) Right click on the printer listed there
    4) Click on “Printer Properties” (not “Properties”)
    5) Select “Device Settings” tab
    6) On the “Installable Options” there is an option named “Duplex Unit (for 2-sided Printing)”, select “Installed” from the drop down menu
    7) Press OK

That’s it! Now you can print automatically on both side without anoying manually page changing by selecting: Print > Preferences > Finishing tab > Print on Both Sides

How to print double sided documents on any printer

Each file and document, and the programs used to open them, are different. Therefore, we are only able to give a basic overview of the steps in printing. These steps are a general guideline and may not apply to the document or file you are trying to print. That being said, many programs have adopted a standard method of printing.

Before proceeding, make sure your printer is turned on, and is installed and configured correctly. See: How to set up and install a computer printer.

Steps on printing a document, picture, or another file

Before trying the steps below, consider using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + P on a PC or Command + P on an Apple computer.

    1. Open the document or file you want to print. The document could be opened in a word processor like Microsoft Word or a text file could be opened in a text editor like Notepad.
    2. Near the top of the program window, look for a print icon that should resemble any of the below icons. As seen in the picture below, each of the icons resembles a printer with a piece of paper.
    1. Open the document or file you want to print.
    2. In the top portion of the program window or browser you’re using, open the file menu by clicking File and then Print from the drop-down menu.

Once either of the above options is done, a Print properties window appears and allows you to specify additional printing options (e.g., number of copies). Once you’ve selected the options, click Ok or Print to start the printing process.

Printing selected text or picture from an Internet web page

For printer-friendly pages like Computer Hope, all navigation menus and other non-important sections are automatically removed when you print a page. If the web page is not printer-friendly or you only want to print a section of a page or picture, follow the steps below.

To print only sections of text or images, it may be easier to copy the text or picture, and paste it into a document. Once all information is gathered into a single document, you can print it out. See: How to copy text and images from a web page.

    Print a selection of text

All browsers support the ability to print selected text. Highlight the text you want to print on the page and press Ctrl + P on a PC or Command + P on an Apple computer to open the print options. In the print options window, select “Selection only” or “Selection” from the available options.

You may need to click More settings or Advanced options before seeing the selection option.

Print only a picture from a web page

To only print a picture contained on a web page, we recommend opening the picture by itself. To do this, right-click the image and select “Open image in a new tab” or “Open image.” Once the image is displayed by itself, press Ctrl + P on a PC or Command + P on an Apple computer to start the print process. You can try these steps now on the image below.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

When I print, it’s saving to a file and not printing

A computer is capable of having multiple printers installed on a computer. Some printers can act as a save to file or PDF function, which saves anything printed to a file instead of a printer. If you’ve installed any program with these capabilities, your default printer may have been changed. If you want to print, make sure you are selecting the correct printer before starting to print. You can also change the default printer so that the correct printer is selected each time you print.

I cannot print because other print jobs are waiting to print

If the printer is not turned on, online, or ready, all print jobs are sent to a print queue and wait until the printer is ready. Once the printer is ready, all available jobs should resume. If the jobs do not resume, either the printer is not ready, or there is another problem. You can test for a problem by either restarting the print job canceling all other print jobs and then trying again.

If you are trying to print to a network printer, you cannot print unless the printer is online. If the printer is turned off, not connected to the network, or there is another network related issue, the printer is shown as offline.

If you are still unable to print

Some programs (often only older ones) may also use the keyboard’s print screen or prt scrn key to print. If your program does not work with the previous steps, try pressing this key to print the document or file.

Finally, if you can locate the print option, but it’s grayed out, or you receive an error, it’s likely you have problems with the printer or its drivers.

In some rare situations, a program may not have a print option. If so, you try copying and pasting the information you want to print into a document in another program, and print it that way. For help with copying and pasting, see: How to copy and paste text in a document or another program.

You can print documents by using either a local printer or a network-connected device. This article provides an overview of how documents are printed.

    Printing overview

The application provides integrated services and client applications that make it easy to generate, store, and distribute documents that support business activity. You can print documents by using either a local printer or a network-connected device. In addition, you can export pages and reports directly from the client, as PDF files or Microsoft Office documents. Finally, the distributed workload lets you print business documents directly from a mobile device by using network resources. Although printing requirements might vary, all industries typically must create hard copies of business documents by using the application. Printing documents on network devices from hosted applications presents a unique set of challenges. Here are some examples:

    • Print drivers might not be available on the user’s device.
    • The user’s device might not be connected to the corporate network.

By using a dedicated host and following a few easy steps, system administrators can configure deployments so that users can print directly from business applications on network devices.

    Application printing scenarios

The following table describes the three primary printing scenarios.

    Scenario Goal Solution
    1. Printing what you see Print what is currently shown in the browser. A “print-friendly” version of the webpage is generated for the browser.
    2. Interactive printing Print a precision document on a locally connected device. You can export a PDF version of the report and download it to the browser.
    3. Printing on a network device Send a precision document to a domain printer device. A precision document is sent to a client application that runs on a server that is hosted in the customer’s domain.

Because the solution varies, depending on the scenario, applications provide built-in services and tooling to help users accomplish their goals:

    • Scenario 1 is supported by the browser’s rendering of the HTML5 client.
    • Scenario 2 uses client applications and Microsoft 365 services.
    • Scenario 3 requires support from client applications and from services that are hosted in Microsoft Azure.

In addition to the platform that is deployed to the Azure subscription, Finance and Operations applications provide customers with an integrated, first-party Azure application that helps them more easily use domain-hosted devices to print documents.

    Service overview

While documents that are produced by the hosted applications are waiting to be printed on a network-connected device, they are stored in Azure blob storage. The Install the Document Routing Agent to enable network printing uses Azure authentication to establish a secure channel to the Azure services.

    Execution sequence

    1. The report is generated by Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and stored in Azure blob storage. Attached printer settings are stored together with the document.
    2. The Document Routing Agent queries the Azure Service Bus queue for active jobs.
    3. The document is downloaded by the Document Routing Agent and spooled to the network printer.

The client-based solution lets customers manage the scale of their printing needs. Customers who have heavy-volume printing workloads can install many Document Routing Agents to increase the number of concurrent printing operations. Alternatively, some customers require very few installations of the Document Routing Agent to handle their anticipated printing needs.

    Service components for network printing

The following diagram shows the basic components that help support network printing operations.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

Note that a single printer can be registered with multiple Document Routing Agents. To resolve the printer preferences, the hosted service uses the network path that uniquely identifies every network printer. As a result, even when a printer is registered by multiple clients, it appears as a single selection in the list of printers available in applications.

When you are working on a Word document and want to print it on paper, you can simply click “Print” from the Microsoft Word ribbon menu. But what if you are working on multiple word documents and want to print all the files at once?

Microsoft Word makes it very easy to print multiple documents from Windows explorer menu. Surprisingly, you don’t need to open all the documents but can print them all at once. This is perfect when you have a large number of documents to consider and want a quick way to print documents in bulk.

Print Multiple Word Documents From Right Click Context Menu

    Follow these simple steps:

    1. First adjust your printers settings by printing a sample document and see whether the margins and layout are all correct. Do not ignore this step because if the print settings are not at par with your requirements, all the ink and paper will be wasted.

    2. Move all the documents to a single folder and open that folder.

    3. If the files are consecutive, hold down the shift key and select the first and last file. This will select all the files in the order you want them to print. If you want to print selected files only, hold down Ctrl key and select the files you want to print.

For example: Let’s say you have 10 documents with file names 1.doc, 2.doc and so on. If you want to print all the documents serially, hold down the Shift key and select 1.doc and 10.doc ( i.e the first and last file in the series of documents that are going to be printed).

Instead, if you want to print only 5.doc and 9.doc, hold down the Control keyon your keyboard and follow the next steps.

How to print double sided documents on any printer

    4. Right click and select “Print” from right click context menu. Windows will now print all the documents one by one in the order you have selected them using the default print settings.

Tip: Don’t try to print multiple documents when any of the document is open in Microsoft Word. First close all the documents and then use the above trick.

The above technique works with any office document, not just word. This is quite handy when you have a large number of documents to print and you don’t want to open each document and manually print them one by one.

Save Or Print Word Documents Into A PDF File

In some situations, you may want to print the word document as a PDF and not on paper. Let’s say you are working on a report and want to send the final copy to a client for verification purpose.

It makes perfect sense to first send a PDF copy of the Word document to the client, see his response, make corrections to the original document if it is asked for and then print the hard copy of the report on paper.

Microsoft Word makes it very easy to print a word document as PDF. In case you are unaware of the “Print as PDF” feature, here are the steps which needs to be followed:

    1. Go to Microsoft Download Center website and download the “Save as PDF or XPS’ office Add-in.

The “Save as PDF” add-in for Microsoft Office 2007 allows you to export and save Word documents as PDF, there is no need to use expensive PDF editing software programs like Adobe Acrobat, Foxit Reader and so on.

    2. After the program has been installed, open the document in Microsoft Word and you will see a new ‘Print as PDF’ option, as shown below:

    3. Export the doc or docx file as PDF and you are done.

Combine Multiple Word Documents Into A PDF File And Print Them In Bulk

Another good idea to print multiple files or office documents would be to combine all of them into a single document and print the newly created document from the first page to the last. The advantage is that this technique works on all operating systems e.g Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 and you need not worry about whether a specific page of a specific file will be printed or not.

Here are the steps that needs to be followed:

    1. First create a backup of all the documents, in case you want to revert the changes later.

    2. Open the first document in the list and move the cursor to the end of the document. You will be adding the content of the second document at the end of the first document, hence the cursor needs to be positioned right at the place where the content of the first document finishes.

    3. In case you want to insert a document somewhere in the middle of the already opened document, you have to position the cursor at the desired location.

    4. Once you are done with the position, switch to the “Insert” tab and select “Insert text from file”.

    6. Similarly, add up text and content from all the documents into the currently opened document using the ‘Insert text from file” option. The only catch is that Microsof Word wont preserve the formatting of individual documents, so you will need to adjust the formatting at the end.

    7. When you are done adding all the documents to the final copy, there are two options

    • Either, print all the content using the simple “Print” option in word. This will print all the subpages which you have imported from other documents earlier on.
    • Export the final copy as a PDF file, preview it and then print using the default “Print’ option in Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF reading software you’re using the browse PDF files).

These are just a couple of ways to manage the print jobs of multiple documents in one go. You may also want to check out Google Docs cloud print feature which allows you to send print jobs to your cloud connected printer directly from a mobile device. This is especially useful, when you’re travelling and want to print a whole bunch of documents stored in your Google Docs account.

A slightly complicated procedure would be to sync Google Docs documents with Microsoft office and use Google’s cloud print feature to print multiple documents from anywhere, any computer.

Microsoft Word has quite clever options for printing selected pages or document sections in any order you want.

    Print pages

Word has options to print page combinations other than the default ‘Print All Pages’.

    Print Current Page

Use the Print pane preview to scroll to the page you want and choose ‘Print Current Page’.

    Custom Print

Custom Print using the Pages: box below the pull-down list. Type in exactly what you want to print.

You can mention page numbers or page sections in the text box to print only specific pages.

Almost any range of pages can be printed with commas separating the pages requested and hyphens indicating a range of pages to print:

    • 3-7 will print pages from 3 to 7 inclusive
    • 1,3,5,7 will print only pages 1, 3, 5 and 7 of the document.
    • 3, 7-11, 13 prints page 3, then 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 plus page 13.

Print from page n to end

You don’t have to know the exact ending page number, any number higher than the total pages in the document will make all the pages until the end print out. Or you can just put a dash with nothing either before or afterwards. For example, in a 73 page document a page range of 50- will print all the pages from 50 to the end or 50-99 will also work.

Print from page one to page n

    Similarly to printing to end:
-50 will print from the start to page 50.

Of course, 1-50 will do the same thing.

    Print in any order

Custom Print lets you print in any order, just enter the pages the order you want them to come out.

    • 7-3 will print pages from 7 then 6 down to page 3, in that order
    • 5,3,7,1 will print only those pages and in that order.

Print the same page more than once

Enter the same page number more than once and Word will print the page again.

    • 1,1,3 will print page 1 twice than page 3.
    • 1,1,1- will print page 1 twice then the entire document. Useful if you need multiple copies of the first/cover page.

    Print Odd or Even

    There are specific options to

    • Print only Odd pages
    • Print only Even pages

How to print double sided documents on any printer

Handy if you want to manually print double-sided. Print the Odd pages, flip the pages and feed back into the printer for Print Even Pages. Some printer software has options to do this automatically (ie print odd pages, pause with a message to flip/feed the paper, then print even pages)

    Print sections

You can print whole sections of a document if you have inserted section breaks.

Being able to print by sections means you can print from the start until a certain section without knowing the exact page number (which could vary) s1-s5 will print the first five sections.

Section breaks could match up with chapters so chapter 1 is also section 1 in Word.

    • s7 will print only section 7
    • s5-s7 will print from section 5 to section 7 inclusive
    • p4s5-p7s5 prints section 5 pages 4 to 7 inclusive
    • p4s5-p8s6 prints from section 5 page 4 to section 6 page 8

If your document has sections breaks which match the organization of the document (eg sections = chapters) this can be an effective way to print parts of a document without knowing the page numbers.
