    Hi,
If I change the aspect ratio, it automatically goes back to 4:3 and records in 4:3. What’s the solution?

Great guide. I don’t know VLC can record computer screen. In my mind, it’s just a good video player. Thanks for sharing your experience. I used to create screencast with Acethinker online screen recorder, free and works like a charm. Share it here as an alternative to VLC player.

    any updates on version 3.0.3?
I tried about what you say but I still get lagging and no sound.
I changed capture mode to desktop, and put put the f/s to 10 or 20, still lags.
    Any tips?

Don’t use vlc for screenrecording. save yourself the trouble.

Is vlc-3.0.8 broken with the feature of recording both desktop video and microphone audio concurrently. I have watched and followed the instructions of about 20 distinct videos and written instructions and once I am done with my recordings… I have either desktop video, or I have desktop audio, but never both in the same mp4 file as a result of using VLC.

Under Capture Device with DirectShow selected I have only Default and None as my choices for both Video Device Name and Audio Device Name. I have no way of selecting Screen capture record (video device) or Virtual audio capture (audio device).
I can record my desktop but that gets me no audio. Only one time have I gotten VLC to actually open the URL I have copied into the “source” field. When I have it all ready to go and select Stream the orange status indicator moves very quickly across the screen, recording nothing and I have a 1-byte file by the name I have entered as destination.
    Any thoughts?

Following the instructione results in a video-only file with no audio.
I’m using version 3.0.9.2 on Debian Linux.

I know my hardware works because I can record sound with Audacity.
So I would say the version of vlc I’m using is badly broken. Don’t they test this stuff before releasing it?

This technology streamlines data packets. VLC record stream is a brilliant solution for those who want to save stream to file. The second approach is much easier, right-clicking the video screen and the record button will appear.

  • Hit Record to start and during the process you can pause and end recording anytime you want.
  • The operation of “Saving” is rather opaque. When you end recording, the footage is in fact automatically stored to one of your local file.
  • VLC record stream is a good measure allowing users to record certain part of their chosen videos. Users start and end recording at wherever they want. However, it costs time waiting in front of a screen until the results come out. For users who want to obtain instant stream videos, downloading stream is a more direct and convenient approach for them.

  • Search the video’s local address. If you are Mac users, click “Window” > “Media Information” on your VLC interface. If you are Windows users, select “Tools” > “Codec Information”. Find the “Location” bar at the bottom, and copy the URL.
  • Open your browser, paste the URL to a blank browser tab and click Enter. Then your video will appear again in another form.
  • Right-click the video, and click “Save Video As”. Then a system window will jump out letting you to choose a destination file to store your video. Name your footage and click “Save” to finish the workflow.
  • Another Way to Record Stream (With RecMaster)

You can playback your footages in the Recording List pointed by a red arrow below.

Step 4. Arrange your process by operations on floating bar. You can add annotations by dint of clicking the brush circled in the picture blow. (FYI, RecMaster’s Mac version is not able to add any annotations)

Step 5. Stop recording and jump to editing interface which RecMaster allows you to do simple clipping.
Step 6. After all the workflow, click Merge and Export button to save your footages to local folder.

    Ideal scenes to use RecMaster:

    3. Want to record a presentation video and upload it like a streaming video? Also, this requirement is properly solved with RecMaster’s colorful annotation tools.

    Ending

This passage is a VLC record screen guide for capturing streaming videos. VLC record stream is a good means to record screen and save streaming sources to local folders. It shares high-degree of availability and it’s totally free, convenient to operate. However, VLC is not a professional recorder in that it fails to provide necessary features of a normal screen recorder, the features include editing function, annotation function etc.

The worst part of VLC record stream is that users adopting this measure will fail to record nonadjacent fragments of streaming videos. It lacks flexibility in recording while RecMaster performs well in this respect. Download RecMaster and it will not be a letdown to you.

hello there, i have tried this method..but sound is still not recorded in the screen recorded video…neither mic sound nor the computer itsef (i.e spotify or youtube sound) . what should i do? does anybody experiencing the same problem?

Hi, the VLC screen recording cuts off midway through my recording session. How do i ensure that the file saved at the end is the full length?

    Hi
    Greetings
Thanks for the tips. However I’m not technical and want to know if I can VLC Screen capture an online video or a BBCiPlayer program as opposed to record/download given the DRM issue and time-restricted BBC downloads. Do I launch the video first and then set about the VLC capture sequences. Also we would need to minimise the VLC screen/interface but when you are setting the Screen Capture procedures how do you minimise when there is no link or sign to do so.
Your help and advice will be much appreciated. Thanks a lot
    Kind regards
    Hassam

VLC can capture anything playing on the screen but the frame rate and audio can be an issue. If I were to capture anything, I would run the capture sequence on VLC first and then, play the on-screen content. VLC will minimize automatically after you start the recording. The minimize button will also still be there to help you with the same feature.

hii there, in my screen recorded video, there is no audio. i mean neither the mic’s audio getting recorded nor the pc’s itself(i.e spotify and youtube) what should i do or what am i doing wrong

I don’t understand: it seems that everything works fine but then I can’t manage to open the recording file (I used the deafult settings). Does anybody has the same problem?

Is this for real? I am really amazed! I was not even aware that VLC has other functions rather than playing movies or video. Usually, I am trying Screen Grabber Pro as my go to computer screen recorder. But because of this awesome suggestion. Let me definitely try this one. Thanks!

27 thoughts to “Record Online Radio Streams as MP3 Using VLC Media Player”

I have the same problem to save download and save a broadcast stream. I carefully went through the 10 steps, but the mp3 file (it is created in the target folder) contains 0 bytes. The stream will not even play in VLC. I can only play (but not save) it in Firefox with the source site open. Earlier versions (prior to 3) had a problem playing and saving youtube files, but an updated youtube.luac file for VLC version 2 fixed the problem. The update is included in version 3 and up. However, the stream I am trying to save is not youtube. The stream name that appears in the Firefox address box does not have any file-type for extension. My VLC version is 3.0.11. Thanks for any help.

The problem may be because of security issues of today and the site address displayed in the browser window is not recognized by VLC. For instance an internet radio site address may look like this: https://www.internet-radio.com/servers/tools/playlistgenerator/?u=http://178.32.62.163:8185/listen.pls?sid=1&t=.pls. However if you paste only the http part of this address (http://178.32.62.163:8185/listen.pls) into VLC, it would both play or stream depending on what you want to do.
    Hope this helps.

Doesn’t work. MP3 file created is completely blank.

I would like to record a stereo mix (basically what I hear through the speakers connected to my sound card) from VLC. However, I haven’t been able to figure out exactly how to do this.

Under the “video4linux” capture device, I see the following audio devices:

However, selecting either of those results in VLC trying to use my webcam (not what I want at all) in addition to the selected audio device.

What do I need to do?

I don’t know about VLC, but you should be able to record in audacity . You’ll need to install the pavucontrol package, and set Audacity’s recording device to the loopback device in the sound preferences, and the application you’re trying to record from, to the loopback device for its output. You’ll also need to record the audio into a stereo track in Audacity. This is of course an internal loopback system, and the audio won’t be output to the speakers as well.

yes you can use VLC. i just figured out exactly how. first off make sure your stereo mix is enabled (within your system’s sound settings). Then, in VLC, go to media, then open capture device. select none for video, then select stereo mix for sound. then press play and make sure to mute the sound on VLC or else you will have a reverbish loop with the original sound plus VLC playing the same sound with a delay. then simply press record to begin recording.

If you head over to WonTube, you can save music videos to your desktop. Then you can extract the audio from the video files so you don’t need to playback the videos. All that’s required is the freeware VLC Media Player, which you can add to most Windows platforms from this VideoLAN page. That software includes streaming options with which you can extract an MP3, or other audio format, from a video.

First, open the VLC window; and then click Media > Convert/Save. That will open the window shown in the snapshot below. Press Add and then select a video to extract the audio from.

How to record audio with vlc

Click the small arrow beside the Convert/Save button at bottom of window to expand a menu with extra options on it. Select Stream from that menu to open the Stream Output window. Then press the Next button to open the Destination Setup.

Choose a path to save it to, enter a title for your extracted audio file in the text box and press the Save button. That file title will then be included in the Filename text box with a .ps extension. Replace the .ps with a .mp3 extension as below.

How to record audio with vlc

Press the Next button to open the Transcoding Options in the snapshot below. Click the Profile drop-down menu from which you can select a variety of file format options. Select Audio – MP3 from that menu, and then click the Next button again.

I needed to record a CBC radio piece today. For most cases, it appears the easiest route is to use streamtuner and streamripper, however there is something about my particular computer or CBC’s streaming style that made it difficult for me. Since it took a couple of hours to figure it all out, I figured I’d better save it for future reference. So here is a vlc only method which works, but with more clicks and it’s is easier to select a combination of options that don’t work than do. This is the combination which finally worked for me:

    • start VLC
    • File > Open Network Stream
    • for HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS: http://www.cbc.ca/listen/streams/r1_whitehorse_32.html
    • check ’steam/save’, select ‘Settings’, then ‘Outputs’:
    • check ‘Play Locally’
    • check ‘File’, set filename as you wish
    • Encapsulation method: ‘Raw’
    • check ‘Audio codec’, and select ‘mpga’ from the list, bitrate as you like (96kb is okay for this particular stream)

It’s the audio codec part which tripped me up the most, even though I was saving mp3 selecting mp3 as a code yields a 0 byte file.

For command line use, copy the source and destination urls from the dialogs created above, however it is necessary to change the syntax somewhat. Namely the :sout option needs to be single quoted.

Here is the same in a bash script, you should only need to edit the INSTREAM and OUTFILE lines to use elsewhere

    #!/bin/sh NOW=$(date +%F_%k-%M) INSTREAM=http://www.cbc.ca/listen/streams/r1_. ehorse_32.html OUTFILE=/home/shared/Audio/Radio/cbc-north_$NOW.mp3 echo … echo …Recording CBC North internet radio to echo $OUTFILE echo …expect a 5 second delay before hearing anything echo …and a few “access_mms” errors prior to that. echo … /usr/bin/vlc $INSTREAM ‘:sout=#transcode:duplicate>’

    2013-Jan-16\

Thanks for writing up the howto on the use of headless vlc to capture streaming audio.\ \ It took a little experimentation to make it work on my hardware (an arm-based pogoplug v4). I don’t know if the changes are due to newer versions of vlc or pertain more to how it was built for the pacman database that arch linux uses (the os that’s running on my pp4). Either way, I thought I’d send what I did your way in case you were interested in updating/adding to the howto.\

    #!/bin/sh NOW=$(date +%F_%k-%M) INSTREAM=http://www.wwoz.org/listen/lo OUTFILE=/home/user1/wwoz_$NOW. mp3 echo echo recording WWOZ echo cvlc $INSTREAM –sout “#transcode:std” \

I wound up using cvlc as opposed to vlc so that it wouldn’t complain about dbus access (lack of X11 really). There’s something I have yet to sort on the output file side as libmp3lame complains “[libmp3lame @ 0xb3e80] channel_layout not specified”. It does record, but what the exact parameters it writes the file with I haven’t yet looked into.\ \ Regards,\ John\ \ \

How to record audio with vlc

VLC allows you to record video from up to 4 different sources: the videos that are played in the software, the desktop of your PC and what happens on it, your computer’s webcam, if you have any, or the signal from your TV. We explain how you can record video for all these cases.

Record videos which are being played in VLC

You can directly record a video which is being played. It can be useful if the signal arrives via streaming or if you want to capture images from a DVD, to give a couple of examples. To do this, click on the View option in the upper toolbar to open the option menu and click on Advanced Controls.

As you can see, new control buttons appear on the interface. One of them contains a red circle, similar to those found in videotapes and cassette players. To start and end the recording, you just have to click on the button while the video or audio is playing.

Button to start recording video in VLC

You can stop the recording whenever you want by pressing the same button with the red circle. The resulting files can be found in the Videos folder that Windows has configured on your hard drive.

    Record your PC desktop

The player offers the possibility to capture what happens on the screen of your PC, it can be useful to create video tutorials or to capture images that are played by any means on the screen. Open the software and in the top menu go to Media > Open Capture Device.

VideoLAN (VLC) is one super-mighty media player. It plays everything and anything you throw at it, chomping bytes and codecs like mad. Not only that, VLC can do a whole lot more. It is not just a tool for watching videos and listening to music. This feisty player can also perform quite a bit of media manipulation, in a good sort of way. It can record, stream and transcode your files. Today, we will do just that.

I want to show you how you can play network streams and transcode them to files, both video and audio. I want to show you how you can record playback, saving you the hassle of cutting, cropping and extracting audio from your files. And I’ll teach you about several other cool features that make VLC the king ofВ digital entertainment.

    Streaming

There are several ways you can utilize streams. First, you can play online radio stations directly from VLC by going to Media > Open Network Stream. Next, you input the URL of the desired online content, either audio or video or both.

If you want to listen, that’s all you need to do. But then, you might also want to stream the content to local storage. In that case, click on the little drop-down arrow and expand the menu currently reading Play. Choose Stream instead.

A new window will show, where you can configure the stream output. The gray box explaining what you’re about to do is quite ugly, but forget that. What you need is a source of some kind, in our case a Web link. Then, click Next.

Now, you need to configure the destination. We will save the stream to a local file in MP4 format. Several pre-configured profiles exist, saving you time trying to figure out what kind of encoding you may want.

Click Stream to start. While the radio plays and records, you can check the local directory to see your file grow.В You can test in another player, if you really want to be sure. Now, the choice of the output file is important. For example, I recorded a short stream from play.cz as an MP4 file, but there’s no video. This means we might have to transcode the recorded file again to get only the audio stream, or make the correct choice of the transcoding profile before streaming.

    Recording

Recording is even simpler. To be able to record, you first need to enable Advanced Controls. This option is available in the View sub-menu. Once you activate the controls, a second command toolbar will appear in the main interface.

Now, you can simply press the Record button and anything playing in VLC will be recorded and saved locally. Videos will be saved under Videos or My Videos in your home directory or user folder, depending on your operating system. Likewise, audio files will go under Music or My Music, respectively.

And here’s that short recording in Kaffeine, which shows there’s 14 seconds of playback left. No manipulation was needed, just press once on the red button to record and once more to stop. Like old VHS.

    Some more reading

I have tons more articles on media manipulation. They should all benefit you in some way, but here’s a sampling of some jolly good tutorials. Of course, you’re most welcome to check the entire section and explore everything.

    Conclusion

VideoLANВ is a truly magnificent product, the Swiss Army Knife, the Jack o’ All Trades, the Chuck Norris of the digital media format. And today, you’ve just learned how to stream and record audio and video. Quite simple, if you know where to look.

Streaming is a very powerful feature. It lets you easily transcode your files, as well as capture online radio and video, webcasts, podcasts, and other types of casts. You can also directly record anything that is being played inside VLC if you do not feel like dabbling with some of the more complicated options. Well, I guess that would be all.
