The latest generation of Microsoft Windows operating system, Windows 11, has several advanced features compared with the previous generations. Some of its new features include widgets, better virtual desktop support, and speedy multitasking, etc. Recording audio on Windows 11 for different online activities is something you may need, whether you are a gamer, freelancer, YouTuber, or digital worker. But how to record audio on Windows 11? Does this new OS provide users with any default options?
There are two ways to record audio on Windows 11, and you can use both the built-in tool or a third-party Windows 11 audio recorder to do that. This post will guide you to capture audio on Windows 11 step by step. Follow those tutorials to save the sounds you like.
How to Record Internal Audio on Windows 11 with Game Bar
Windows 11 allows users to record audio with the Xbox Game Bar application. This built-in program supports recording games and other digital activities on your Windows PC, including your voice note or different computer sounds.
Game Bar makes it easier for you to take control of your gaming activities while recording them. It has user-friendly features, and you can adjust the audio settings per your preferences. Moreover, it enables you to socialize with people of the same interest. All you need to do is join the Xbox community.
How to Record Internal Audio on Windows 11 with Game Bar:
- Step 1. To enable Game Bar, press Windows + G. Click “Capture” from the game bar preset.
- Step 2. If you want to include your verbal narration/voice note, click the “Mic” button in the “Capture” group. Or you can press Windows + Alt + M to turn the mic on and off.
- Step 3. Click the “Start Recording” icon in the “Capture” pane. Or press Windows + Alt + R to start/stop recording. The Xbox Game Bar will be minimized, and a “Capture Status” will show on the right edge of your PC screen.
- Step 4. Click the “Recording” button or press Windows + Alt + R to stop recording.
But this software also has a shortcoming. As it’s designed to capture the gameplay, Game Bar doesn’t support capturing only the audio. Although it has a versatile recording tool that enables you to capture internal audio and your own voice simultaneously, you have to record those sounds along with recording the screen.
For those who want to record a ringtone or record a song and use it as background music, Game Bar is relatively complex to use. You have to find a video editor that supports extracting audio from videos, such as EaseUS Video Editor, or you need to find a recorder with a more advanced audio recording tool, like EaseUS RecExperts.
If you want to know the detailed steps to extract audio from a video, this post is what you need.
How to Record Audio on Windows 11 with EaseUS RecExperts
Besides the disadvantage mentioned above, Xbox Game Bar sometimes may even affect the PC speed. You can get yourself a powerful third-party Windows 11 audio recorder, like EaseUS RecExperts, to avoid these issues. This way, you will never have to slow down your computer or get faulty recordings.
It is an ideal application for screen recording. It is lightweight, easy to use, and works fast. With this app, you will forget about problematic bugs your PC can face. When it comes to audio recording, this software enables you to capture internal audio and our voice from the microphone at the same time. Then, you can export those recordings in any audio format you like. In addition to that, the bitrate and sampling rate of the audio are all configurable.
As an all-in-one recorder, it also works well to capture the screen or record the webcam. And the built-in trimmer enables you to edit the audio or video recordings with ease.
- Lightweight audio recording software for Windows 11/10
- The best voice recorder Windows 11 users can’t miss
- Record a specific area or full screen
- Schedule recording to start and stop automatically
- Support more than 10 audio/video formats
- Add opening titles and closing credits
This recorder doesn’t require registration. Download it for free and capture the audio effortlessly.
Method of Recording Audio on Windows 11 PC:
Step 1. Launch EaseUS RecExperts, and there are four functions on the interface. Here you choose “Audio”.
Step 2. Select the sound source by clicking on the bottom left icon. It supports recording system sound, microphone voice, and both of them. The settings in “Options” helps you to adjust the volume.
Step 3. Hit “REC” button to start recording audio. To finish it, you just click on the red square icon to stop it.
Step 4. An audio player will pop up automatically. You can view the recorded audio or trim it with built-in tools.
Recording audio in Windows 11 is not an issue. You can do it with the built-in Game Bar app, which enables you to record screens with voiceovers or other sounds. But this app can affect your Windows in negative ways, like slowing down the speed. And you have to find a video editor to extract audio from the video.
However, EaseUS RecExperts is an intuitive screen recorder with easy-to-use tools that will help you record audio on Windows 11 without any hassle. It is not only lightweight but also quick in working. It enables you to record audio and edit it. Download and have a try.

You don’t have to hold up a microphone to your computer’s speakers to record its audio. Even if you don’t have a Stereo Mix option on your PC, you can easily record the sound coming from any Windows PC.
You can record the sound coming from your PC in numerous ways, and we’re going to show you the three best we’ve found. The first two options use only software, and the third relies on an old trick that connects your computer’s audio output to its audio input with an audio cable.
Option 1: Stereo Mix
Stereo Mix is sometimes called “What U Hear.” It’s a special recording option that your sound drivers might provide. If it is included with your drivers, you can select Stereo Mix (instead of a microphone or audio line-in input), and then force any application to record the same sound that your computer is outputting from its speakers or headphones.
On modern versions of Windows, Stereo Mix is generally disabled by default—even if your sound drivers support it. Follow our instructions to enable the Stereo Mix audio source on Windows. After enabling Stereo Mix, you can use any audio-recording program, and just select “Stereo Mix” as the input device instead of the usual “line-in” or “microphone” option.
On some devices, you may not have this option at all. There may be a way to enable it with different audio drivers, but not every piece of sound hardware supports Stereo Mix. It’s unfortunately become less and less common.
Option 2: Audacity’s WASAPI Loopback
Don’t have a Stereo Mix option? No problem. Audacity has a useful feature that can record the audio coming out of your computer—even without Stereo Mix. In fact, Audacity’s feature may be even better than Stereo Mix, assuming you’re willing to use Audacity to record the audio. This method takes advantage of a feature that Microsoft added in Windows Vista named the Windows Audio Session API (WASAPI). The feature also functions in Windows 7, 8, and 10, and helps make up for the lack of a Stereo Mix option on modern Windows PCs.
In Audacity, choose the “Windows WASAPI” audio host, and then choose an appropriate loopback device, such as “Speakers (loopback)” or “Headphones (loopback).”
Click the Record button to start recording the audio in Audacity, and then click Stop when you’re done. Because you’re using Audacity, you can easily trim and edit the sound file when you’re done.
Update: If this doesn’t work, you may also need to select the correct number of recording channels to match your device using the dropdown box to the right of device selection box. For example, If you have a 7.1 channel headset, select “8.”
Audacity’s tutorial website explains why this feature is actually better than Stereo Mix:
“WASAPI loopback has an advantage over stereo mix or similar inputs provided by the soundcard that the capture is entirely digital (rather than converting to analog for playback, then back to digital when Audacity receives it). System sounds playing through the device selected for WASAPI loopback are still captured, however.”
In other words, your recorded sound file will be higher-quality when using Audacity’s WASAPI loopback option.
Option 3: An Audio Cable
If neither of the first two options suit your needs, there’s always the low-tech solution—although it’s a bit of a hack. Just get an audio cable with a male 3.5mm connector on both ends. Plug one end into the line-out (or headphone) jack on your PC, and the other end into the line-in (or microphone) jack. You’ll stop hearing the sound your computer produces, but you can use any audio-recording program to record the “line in” or “microphone” input. To actually hear the sound, you could get a splitter, and then output the audio to headphones or speakers at the same time you direct it back into your computer.
Sure, this is inconvenient and silly compared to to the first two software-only options we talked about. But, if you desperately need to capture the audio coming out of your computer in an application that isn’t Audacity and you don’t have Stereo Mix, the cable trick allows you to do this.

Screen recording with audio is a general need that you might sometimes need to make a video tutorial because the video will be more intuitive to show the operations. You might also need to record a clip of the online video so you don’t need to find a way to download the whole of it. There are more needs, such as to record gameplay, record an important online meeting, etc.
This article teaches two significant ways to record computer screen with audio in Windows 10. One is to use the free inbuilt Windows 10 screen recorder. Another is to record screen with a more professional screen recording software for Windows 10.
Method 1: Record Screen with the Free Built-in Windows 10 Screen Recorder
You might have been using Windows 10 for quite a long time but haven’t known there’s a hidden feature that Windows 10 comes with a screen recording function. You can activate it by pressing Win + G . This function is built into Xbox. It is designed primarily for recording Xbox gameplay but it can also be used to record browser video or capture the activities on the applications.
How to record your screen with the Win10 inbuilt recorder?
Step 1: Press Windows key + G key simultaneously to open the recorder.
Step 2: In the Xbox game bar panel, you can adjust the volume for the microphone sound and system sound. After that, click on the recording button as highlighted to start recording your work.
Step 3: The Win10 recorder is recording the screen. You can click the “Stop recording” button when you are going to end the recording process. You’ll find your recorded videos under the “Videos” folder in a subfolder called “Captures“.
The superiority and inferiority of this free inbuilt screen recording software are quite obvious. The biggest advantage is that it can record “after the fact”. Just imagine you have experienced the best hit in your game playing history but you didn’t turn on the recorder beforehand? You can use the inbuilt recorder to record most recent 30 seconds of gameplay on Windows 10.
However, the shortcoming of this free inbuilt screen recorder is deadly. It doesn’t allow you to record the desktop and the file explorer. In addition to this, you can’t switch to record the activities on different applications.
For example, when you are recording the operation on the Chrome browser, and you switch to another software interface, the recording will automatically stop. That means it is almost impossible to record a video tutorial with the inbuilt Windows 10 recorder.
Don’t worry and keep reading. We will show a more professional way to capture all the screen activities on Windows 10 along with Audio.
Method 2: Capture Screen with VideoSolo Screen Recorder
To record anything that happens on the screen, it is necessary to find a more extensive screen recording software. VideoSolo Screen Recorder is a professional tool that perfectly works on Windows 10/8/7. It can record all the screen activities with system audio and microphone audio, whether it is the operation on desktop, file explorer, or other applications.
With the free version of VideoSolo Screen Recorder, you can record for 3 minutes. However, to record as long as you wish, you need to either buy the Pro version or restart the recording for every 3 minutes. Later you might need to combine them using any video editors.
There are many output formats for you to choose, such as MP4, WMV, MOV, F4V, AVI, TS, GIF. After recording, VideoSolo Screen Recorder enables you to preview and do a simple clip for the video. You can download the free trial to try.

Step 3: Customize the Preferences before Start
VideoSolo Screen Recorder offers rich customizations. Click on the “Settings” icon on the program interface and it will bring you to the “Preferences” window. Here you can set your own hotkeys in the “Hotkeys” column, or customize many output settings in the “Output” column.

Windows 7’s Sound Recorder creates WAV sound file while the Voice Recorder of Windows 10 only records W4A format. Then how to record WAV or MP3-formated audio on Windows 10?
Handheld audio recorders are convenient for collecting voice on the move, such as class lecture, interview and private evidence (collection). While speaking of common audio recording requirements on Windows 10, a handy voice and sound recorder is just enough. As a part of screen capture, computer audio capture is usually taken by users to maintain some online streaming music, lecture, (voice) call, conference, webinar material or create file by themselves for voice memo, narration, podcast, interview, or other events.

Audio recording is simple in Windows 10. All you need is a microphone and software to capture the input.
You don’t have to spend money on a sound recording program, however. Good paid programs exist, of course, but you can do well with free offerings. That’s especially so if you plan to do very little in the way of editing.
Not all sound recording programs have the same level of features, so we’ve highlighted two that suit both basic and more advanced needs. You’re covered if straightforward is what you want, and also if you require greater control over inputs and edits. And both picks cost absolutely nothing to use.
Editor’s note: This article was updated to include a video of the process.
Recording in Voice Recorder is dead simple.
This dead-easy-to-use sound recording program comes included with Windows 10, so you can jump into it straightaway. To begin, tap the Windows key (or click on the Start button), type voice or recorder to bring up Voice Recorder as a search result, and hit enter.
Starting a recording is as simple as clicking on the large blue microphone icon in the left-hand part of the window. The screen will change to show buttons for stopping, pausing, and marking specific moments within the recording, as well as a counter that shows how long you’ve been recording. When you’re done, click on the blue stop button in the middle of the screen.
In the main window, you’ll see a list of recorded clips. You can also select files for playback, trimming, and renaming. If you’re having trouble recording through your microphone, or through the correct microphone, go into Win10’s Sound settings (Windows key, then type sound settings.) Under Input, verify that the microphone in use is set as the active device.
Files recorded in Voice Recorder are immediately accessible as .m4a files, which most modern devices can play through their default apps.
Audacity might lack a sleek, modern look, but it has plenty of features to make up for its plain user interface.
Audacity may not look like much, but this well-known free audio recording program’s sophistication lies in its feature set.
To record, simply open Audacity after installation and hit the red recording button. Audacity makes the most important basic controls obvious and available in this main window: You can start, stop, and pause recordings as needed, easily change which microphone you’re using as an input device, and switch up the output device for listening to playback. Basic editing tools are available here on this screen too.
Audacity’s real benefit is its ability to accommodate more complicated recording setups, like multiple tracks and/or multiple input devices, as well as more intricate edits and adjustments. (Example: Increasing input levels because the mic’s output isn’t strong enough.) Learning the ins and outs of Audacity can take some time, but that time invested will make it easier to get the most out of your recordings.
You can also export your clips in a wide variety of common file types, which is beneficial to even basic users. Be aware that unlike Voice Recorder, Audacity doesn’t immediately save recordings as playable audio files. Instead, it saves whatever you’ve recorded as a project file, and you must export via File > Export to an audio format like .mp3 or .wav for other devices or programs to be able to play back the file.
For more detailed information on how to dive into Audacity’s wealth of features, check out our Audacity primer.
For higher-quality recordings, keep these tips in mind:
- Record in a spot free of background noise and echo. As odd as it sounds, the inside of a closet full of clothes works remarkably well.
- Stay closer to your mic—moving too far away from it can cause the recording to sound hollow.
- Hardware does play a role in sound quality, so if you have some spare cash, upgrading to one of our best USB microphone picks from a laptop, webcam, or headset mic will let your voice shine.
Apart from downloading audio tracks or extracting sounds from other video or audio sources, recording is also a professional recommended solution to save audio files for playback on your computer. Whether you’re a YouTuber, a streamer, a gamer, or a professional, you’ve probably needed to record system audio in Windows at some point. We will show you how to record Windows system audio as you hear it by utilizing the “Stereo Mix” feature, which is a hidden audio mix option in form of a virtual media device most people don´t know about.
In just five simple steps, you can record audio within Windows just as it comes out of your speakers. Windows 10 does this by looping back the output audio signal into this “Stereo Mix” virtual audio device which then can be set as input device in any application.
All you need to record Windows system audio recording is a Realtek sound card and a recording software. The former is included in most computers on the mainboard in form of a chipset provided by Realtek. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow in order to enable Stereo Mix and record system audio in Windows 10.
How to activate Stereo Mix in Windows 10
Time needed: 1 minute.
Open “Input devices” in Windows 10 settings
The fastest way to see available “Input devices” in Windows 10 is by searching and opening “Manage sound devices”.
Enable Stereo Mix in “Managed sound devices”
In “Manage sound devices” you will find a disabled “Stereo Mix” entry in “Input devices”. Just click on “Stereo Mix” to show the “Enable”-button. Then you can enable “Stereo Mix” with a simple click.
How to Record Windows System Audio using Stereo Mix in Audacity
Time needed: 2 minutes.
With “Stereo Mix” enabled, you are now ready to record audio in Windows exactly as it comes out of your speakers. You can now open your favorite recording program and select “Stereo Mix” instead of your microphone as the recording source.
A good and freely available pc recording software you can use example is Audacity. With Audacity, you can record audio in Windows easily, and the program allows “Stereo Mix” to be used as the recording device.
Setting “Stereo Mix” as input device in Audacity
Click on the “Microphone” pane and choose “Stereo Mix”. Now you are ready to record system audio in Windows 10 using Audacity.
Stereo Mix is missing – What can I do?
In some cases, your audio chipset drivers aren’t helping you record audio using “Stereo Mix”. There is a chance that you open the “Recording Devices” pane and “Stereo Mix” will be missing.
To fix this problem, you can try to update your audio chipset driver. With sound chipsets from Realtek, it should usually work. In other instances, however, it’s because the newest Windows drivers for your chipset don’t support this feature.
In order to fix this, you should try downloading and installing drivers from older Windows versions for your audio chipset. As always, before doing so make sure you create a backup of your system.

Capture the sounds you want with ease
Want to convert some of those old cassette tapes to digital MP3s? Want to use voice dictation software? Want to record some audio from a website that streams music? Want to use your PC as a makeshift karaoke machine? Getting Windows to record all those sounds isn’t always so easy or straightforward.
Windows allow more than one audio device, a “feature” that usually makes troubleshooting audio problems needlessly complicated. This is particularly true when recording sound, given that Windows can only record from one source at a time.
A single audio device may have two or three audio inputs: an analog (mono) microphone input, an analog stereo “Line-In” or auxiliary input, and sometimes a digital S/PDIF input. Also, special devices, like voice dictation headsets and TV tuner cards, have their own inputs.
Sound Inputs in Windows
All the inputs for all your audio devices are listed in Control Panel ➝ Sound ➝ Recording tab.
To choose the default audio source, highlight the device you want to use and click Set Default. Most applications will automatically use the default device to record sound, but some (particularly voice-dictation software) require that you choose a source separately in the application itself. If you speak to your mic, the mic level should rise real time:
If you select the microphone and click on Properties, you’ll be able to adjust quite a few settings. On the General tab, you get some basic information about the device and you can choose to disable it here if you like. The more interesting feature is on the Listen tab.
This is a cool feature whereby you can play the sound that is being recorded by your microphone directly to your speakers. So as you talk into the microphone, the sound will be played in real time to your speakers. Obviously, this will work much better if you are using headphones, so that the sound from the speakers doesn’t feed back into the microphone.
Check the Listen to this device box and select the device you want to play the audio back through. By default, it’s set to your default playback device, which will normally be your headphones or speakers. If you have multiple playback devices, you can choose from the dropdown list. Click the Apply button and any sound picked up by your mic should play through your speakers in real time.
On the Levels tab, you can adjust the sensitivity of the microphone depending on your needs. On the Advanced tab, you can change the default format for the audio. By default, it’s set to 1 channel, 16 bit and 44100 Hz, which is CD quality. There are many other options, including DVD quality, which you can use if you have a high-quality microphone.
If you go back to the Recording tab, select Microphone and click on Configure, the Speech Recognition dialog will appear. Here you can setup voice control for Windows, train the computer to understand your voice better and setup your microphone properly for speech recognition.
Lastly, back on the Recording tab, you may notice an option called Stereo Mix. If you don’t have this option, it means your sound card doesn’t support the feature.
So what does it do? Basically, it lets you record any sound that is playing on your computer. For example, if you are watching a YouTube video on your computer, how would you record the audio? You could try to place a microphone next to your speakers, but that’s not an ideal way to record that audio. Stereo Mix will let you open a sound recording program on your computer, choose Stereo Mix as the input and it’ll record whatever sound comes out of your computer.
If you use the default Sound Recorder or Voice Recorder (Windows 10) apps, they will automatically record from Stereo Mix as long as you disable the microphone first. If you’re using a program like Audacity, just change the sound input to Stereo Mix. Using this input, you can record music playing on your computer, audio from a video playing on your computer, or any other sound from your PC.
Hopefully, this gives you a good overview of the different audio inputs in Windows and how you can use them to record the audio you need. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment. Enjoy!

Screen recording is helpful for a number of things, from creating a tutorial to grabbing a clip to post on Twitter to share with friends. On Windows 10, you can capture a video of your screen by using the built-in Xbox Game Bar.
How to record your screen on an iPhone
How to record your screen on a Mac
The Xbox Game Bar was designed to record clips of video games, but it’s useful for any type of video capture. In order to use it, your laptop’s video card must support one of three encoders (an encoder translates video input into a compatible digital format): Intel Quick Sync H.264, Nvidia NVENC, or AMD VCE encoders.
If you want to check which video card your laptop has, open the Device Manager (by searching for “device manager” in your taskbar), and then click on “Display adapters.” Or you can simply try a test recording; if your laptop’s specifications don’t allow screen recording, you’ll get a message saying so.
If that happens, try to update the drivers for your video card. If your drivers haven’t been updated in a while, that might fix the problem. If that doesn’t work, there is a variety of Windows apps available (such as SnagIt) that can capture video for you.
Meanwhile, assuming that you have a computer that is capable of using Game Bar, here’s how you do it.
Game Bar is automatically installed in Windows 10. (If, for some reason, you can’t find it, you can download it here.) However, if you haven’t used it yet, it might be worth checking to make sure it’s working — especially before you try to record an important video. Press Windows + G on your keyboard. This should open up the Game Bar. If it doesn’t, here’s how to enable it:
- Go to the Start Menu
- Click on the cog icon to open Settings
- Click on “Gaming”
- Make sure the switch at the top labeled “Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game bar” is toggled to On
- This page also has keyboard shortcuts for Game Bar commands like opening the Game Bar, taking a screenshot and starting and stopping a screen recording. You can come up with your own shortcuts for these commands and enter them here if you wish.
Record your screen
Now you’re ready to record your screen. Keep in mind that Game Bar only records one application window at a time, usually the last window you clicked into, and you can’t switch to recording another window after you start recording. In addition, it won’t let you record your whole screen, so you can’t record your Desktop or File Explorer or a few other apps, such as Maps. The best thing to do is experiment ahead of time if possible.
Here’s how to record your screen:
- Open up the application window you want to record. It may help to close or minimize other windows to avoid accidentally recording the wrong one. Also, make sure any audio you don’t want in the recording is off, even if it’s from a different app or window — even though the screen recorder only records one window at a time, it will still record all of the audio playing across applications on the device.
- Press the Windows key + G to open up Xbox Game Bar
- You can click on the microphone button to enable external audio recording so you can add commentary or do a voiceover. (You’ll still record internal audio either way.)
- There is a number of other options that you can play with before you start recording. For example, using the “System sounds” section of the Audio window, you can lower the audio or mute any sounds from specific apps that happen to be open. When you have a moment, take some time to experiment.
- When you’re ready, click on the Record button (the one with a dot in it) to start recording.
- Alternatively, if you know that all of your options are set the way you want them, you can simply press Windows + Alt + R to start recording without going into the Game Bar.
- Either way, you’ll get a small pop-up bar with a timer and two recording controls. Click on the microphone button to switch your external mic on and off (your internal mic will still be on).
- When you’re done, click on the stop button in the recording bar or press Windows + Alt + R to stop recording
- Once you finish recording, a notification will pop up on the right side of your screen, saying “Game clip recorded.” You can click on that to open the “Captures” folder in File Explorer.
- Alternatively, you can find your recording through File Explorer. Go to “This PC” >“Videos” > “Captures.”
