iPad 3 Screen Replacement Guide

Required Steps for Screen Repair:

  • Begin by using a heat gun or hair dryer on a medium setting and warm the adhesive around the outside edges of the touch screen. This should take around 45-60 seconds to warm the adhesive.
  • Using an iPad opening tool, gently insert the edge into a corner of the tablet. Gently glide the tool along the edge, releasing the adhesive. You will need to reheat the screen several times to keep the adhesive warm while removing the touch screen.
  • This is a long process that should not be rushed. Take your time and work around all edges of the device until you can finally lift the digitizer. The digitizer flex cable will be located in the bottom left of the iPad as show in Orange in Figure 1. Be cautious of this and swing the digitizer to the left to avoid damaging the flex cable.

Breaking the glass on your iPad might not stop it from working, but can make it difficult and unsafe to use. Here’s a step-by-step guide to fixing a broken front panel on your iPad 2 or iPad 3.

Prior to joining TechRepublic in 2000, Bill was an IT manager, database administrator, and desktop support specialist in the social research and energy industries. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Louisville, where he has also lectured on computer crime and crime prevention.

If you crack the front panel on your iPad, you can either live with it, buy a new one, or fix it.

For those with an AppleCare+ or other warranty that covers accidental damage, the choice is obvious. Get the unit fixed or replaced. If your iPad isn’t under warranty, you don’t want to buy a new one, and you’re ready to tackle a challenging, but satisfying do-it-yourself fix, here’s a guide for replacing the front panel.

Before you begin
Before you tackle this fix, I encourage you to watch my video on what to know before trying to fix a smartphone or tablet . It will help you decide if you should tackle the repair yourself or take your iPad to a shop.

And lastly, understand that by following the instructions in this video, you do so at your own risk. Neither CNET nor any of its representatives can be held responsible for injury, damage, or loss of data.

Getting replacement parts and tools
Before you begin, you’ll need to get the necessary replacement parts and tools. For this fix, we’re just replacing the front panel–not the LCD. We’ll be reusing the Home button and camera bracket from the old panel, as they aren’t damaged.

You can buy replacement panels online for between $50 and $150. Just be sure that you buy the right one for your iPad. And depending on where you buy the panel, it may come with pre-cut adhesive strips. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to buy them or cut your own strips from double-sided tape.

As for tools, you’ll need a hair dryer or heat gun, a few thin metal blades, several plastic spudgers, guitar picks, or plastic case opening tools, and a Phillips #00 screwdriver. Again, you can pick these up online if you don’t have them.

Lastly, I’m using an iPad 2 as the guinea pig in this article. But the same basic steps can also be used to replace the front panel on the iPad 3.

1. Back up your data

Just in case anything goes wrong during the fix, you should back up all the iPad’s data using iCloud or iTunes.

2. Remove the broken panel

With your data safe, heat the panel’s edges with the hair dryer or heat gun. This loosens the adhesive that holds the panel to the iPad’s metal case. Heat a small area until you can easily insert a thin tool between the panel and case. Gently pry them apart. If the panel doesn’t easily come away from the case, keep heating the area. Also, take care not to insert the tool too far into the iPad as this can damage the LCD and other internal components.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screenBill Detwiler/CNET

Once you’ve created a small gap in one area, work your way around the edge–heating and prying as you go. You’ll need to leave spaceholders (like a plastic spudger or guitar pick) in the separated sections, to prevent the panel and case from sticking back together.

You’ll also need to be very careful when working to the right of the home button. The Wi-Fi antenna is attached to the panel here, and you’ll need to gently pry it loose without damaging it.

Then disconnect the LCD connector from the main board and set the display somewhere safe.

You can now disconnect the broken panel. First, carefully flip up the two locking levers on the digitizer cable connector. As you remove the ribbon cable from the connector, you’ll also need to gently peel it away from the main board’s metal shielding.

3. Remove the home button and camera plate

With the broken panel completely detached, you can remove the home button contact using the Phillips screwdriver. Then using the hair dryer again, heat and remove the bracket and button. Likewise, heat the metal camera plate and pry it loose with a thin blade.

4. Install the home button and camera plate on the new front panel

Using the pre-cut adhesive strips or double-sided tape, attach the camera plate to the new panel. Do the same for the home button and the button bracket. Then reattach the home button contact with the screwdriver.

At this point, we’re just testing the panel’s fit and functionality, so we’ve haven’t applied any of the adhesive strips. Turn the iPad on and verify everything works. If it does, turn the unit off, lift open the panel and apply the adhesive strips.

Before closing the panel for the last time, carefully inspect the LCD and inside of the panel for dust. If you see any, gently remove it using a microfiber cloth or puff of air. Avoid touching the inside of the panel’s viewing area or the LCD with your fingers or anything else that might damage these surfaces. Once you’re sure both surfaces are clean, fold the front panel back onto the metal case and press firmly, but gently along the edges. After removing the panel’s protective film (if it has one), your fix is complete.

This is a tough fix. But when done successfully, it can breathe new life into a broken iPad.

If you’ve cracked your iPad screen there are a number of things you can do to “patch it up”. These should only ever be seen as short term fixes – there is no substitute for a screen replacement.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Tape up the screen or apply a screen protector

Once you’ve cracked your iPad screen there are a few temporary fixes you can do to get you by. The quickest method is to simply patch the screen up with Sellotape – it doesn’t look great, but it should stop the cracks getting any worse and will stop you cutting your finger on any sharp edges. The second option is to apply a screen protector – you’ll find them cheap on eBay. Once again, it won’t look very attractive, but it will at least make it mostly usable for the short term.

Time to retire the old iPad?

If your iPad is really old, then perhaps it’s time for a new one? Some older iPad’s run really slowly by modern standards and the cost to replace the screen can be prohibitive. If however you don’t want to go to the effort of migrating your iCloud account, replacing the broken screen could make life easy.

Get your iPad repaired

Getting your cracked iPad screen repaired is often the most cost-effective option. If there’s nothing else wrong with the iPad then why would you do anything else? Moving from one iPad to another is time consuming and setting up apps and re-entering passwords is a nuisance.

Cracked iPad screen repair options and costs

Warranty repair: $0

All new iPads are covered by Apple’s one-year warranty, which offers free repairs for covered defects. However, cracked screens are usually caused by accidental damage, which is not covered by Apple’s warranty.

If you think your iPad screen was cracked due to a manufacturing defect, you can see if Apple will fix it for free. Be prepared to make your case (it could be difficult to prove you didn’t drop it or step on it).

If Apple won’t cover your cracked iPad screen, you’ll need to pay to have it replaced.

Phone Insurance: Worth it or waste of money?

AppleCare+ repair: $49

If you have AppleCare+, you can get your cracked iPad screen replaced for a reduced cost: $49 for all iPad models. Note that AppleCare+ only covers two incidents of accidental damage and it only lasts for 24 months after your original iPad purchase.

You need to buy AppleCare+ at the time of purchase for $129. In addition, Apple might send a replacement instead of your original iPad.

Carrier insurance: $29 to $200

For new iPads, Verizon Total Mobile Protection costs $12 per month and has a $29 deductible for unlimited cracked screen repairs.

Verizon Phone Insurance: What it covers, what it doesn’t

AT&T’s Mobile Protection Pack costs $11.99 per month and has a $49 deductible for cracked iPad screens. Sprint Complete costs $13 per month for tablets and has a $200 deductible for covered iPad models.

T-Mobile Protection 360 costs $12 to $15 per month, depending on your iPad model, and the deductible is $49. The plan comes with AppleCare, so Apple will service any claims made over the first 24 months of your coverage; after that, T-Mobile’s partners will service your iPad.

T-Mobile Phone Insurance: What it covers, what it doesn’t

Note that you may get a replacement iPad rather than your original device when you file a carrier insurance claim.

Professional iPad repair: $79 to $649

Professional iPad screen repair costs vary significantly depending on the model and parts. Apple and its authorized repair centers use OEM parts, so they tend to charge more than independent repair shops that use cheaper aftermarket versions.

For example, Apple charges $299 to replace an iPad Air 2 screen, but you’d pay $249 at iResQ and $199 at My Broken Phone. However, Apple charges just $499 to repair an iPad Pro 11-inch screen versus $549 at iResQ, so it’s worth comparing prices before you pick a repair shop.

In general, the older the iPad, the cheaper the screen replacement cost. Reference the table above to get a range of what pro repair centers charge for iPad screen repair.

Online Phone Repair: How it works & what it costs

DIY iPad repair: $15 to $350

If you have the skills, you can repair your own iPad with parts from sites like Repairs Universe, FixEZ and DirectFix. You can even find step-by-step instructions on sites like iFixit and YouTube.

Repair toolkits cost anywhere between $5 and $50 or more, depending on the quality and number of tools, but you can get by with one of the cheaper sets.

Want to Fix It Yourself? Here’s where & how to learn phone repair

If you decide to go the DIY route, note that it’s much easier to replace the entire LCD/digitizer assembly than to replace the glass alone (even though the glass is slightly cheaper). Of course, you still run the risk of damaging your iPad, plus you could void any warranties and insurance policies.

With that said, expect to pay roughly half the professional repair cost. Reference the table above for detailed price estimates.

We have a few Apple products here in Casa de Dorobek. And well, we’ve sadly broken most of them at some point or another. Andy has now fixed 5 screens for us with this how to fix a broken iPhone screen tutorial on C.R.A.F.T. Sadly, Andy recently dropped his iPad and shattered that screen too. He figured it was time to learn a new trick and he embarked on the journey to DIY his shattered iPad screen for only $27. We did a quick google search, and found that it could cost up to $200 to have your iPad screen repaired, yikes! So, I’m here to tell you that you can fix your iPad screen yourself and save lots of bacon!

Note: This iPad screen tutorial is for the 2nd generation iPad.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

  • iPad screen kit (most of these come with the tool kit seen below) TIP: The iPads look similar from version to version, but be sure and order the screen that is specific to your iPad model. Also, when purchasing your screen, you want to make sure it comes with the adhesive pre-installed. The kit should cost between $25-$30 bucks. Here is the kit Andy bought to fix his iPad screen.
  • hairdryer
  • kitchen towel (or work mat)
  • vacuum to suck up glass

Another thing that is helpful to understand before attempting this iPad fix is that there are 3 layers to an iPad. The layers are:

  • Glass (he says digitizer in the video)
  • The LCD screen. This is what actually displays the picture.
  • The computer parts and the frame of the iPad

Here they are in picture form:

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

1. First, heat the edge of the iPad with a hairdryer because you need to loosen the glue that holds the glass to the frame of the iPad.

2. Start removing the glass from the iPad with the blue guitar pick looking tool. Andy also used the mini flat head screw driver to do this step. Depending on the severity of your break, this could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours. Make sure that you remove every piece of glass. Be gentle. Note: The Wi-Fi antenna is also adhered to the body and needs to stay with the body when the glass is separated. Watch the video below at 2:50 to see how to separate the Wi-Fi antenna from the glass.

3. Continue removing glass from the screen and body. Andy used the green tool seen below and the mini flat head screw driver. Like I said above, depending on the severity of the break this can take up to 2 hours… Andy spent a good hour and half removing glass. He also used a vacuum cleaner to suck up tiny shards that he could not pick up with his hand.

4. After you remove all of the glass (or digitizer as he calls it in the video) you will need to remove the LCD screen by un screwing 4 screws on the corner of the iPad. Watch 3:25 in the video below for more deets on this part. Here is one of the screws and you can also the 3 layers of the iPad in this pic:

5. Use green tool to disconnect the video connector and disconnect the LCD screen. Watch at 3:37 in the video for more info on this part.

6. Open both digitizer latches carefully with the mini screwdriver. This will completely separate the glass (or digitizer) from the iPad frame.

7. At this point, make sure that there is no remaining glass on the iPad frame. You can try flipping the frame upside down to get remaining shards out.
How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

8. The hard work is over! Now it’s time to attach the new glass! Repeat steps 4,5,6, in reverse order! A few tips:

  • Make sure you don’t have any fingerprints on the LCD screen or the inside of the new glass. These will be impossible to remove once you reassemble your iPad.
  • Also, once you reconnect the LCD screen, turn on the iPad to make sure that the screen is connected properly.

If your smartphone doesn’t have a protective case, scratches and cracks on the screen are inevitable. There’s no shortage of screen repair shops, but knowing how to fix (or at least deal with) a cracked phone screen yourself could save you a few hundred dollars.

Instructions in this article apply broadly to smartphones made by various manufacturers.

Causes of Cracked Phone Screens

No matter how careful you are, you can accidentally damage your phone’s screen in many ways:

  • Dropping it on a hard surface.
  • Sitting on your phone when it’s in your back pocket.
  • Bumping into things while your phone is in your pocket or purse.

If your phone is leaking liquid, it could be from the battery. Stop using your phone right away and put it in a plastic bag until you can get it professionally fixed.

How to Fix a Cracked Screen on a Smartphone

You may have several options for repairing your cracked screen depending on the severity of the damage:

Use packing tape. Cut out a small piece of packing tape and place it over the cracks. If the damage is along the phone’s side, use an X-Acto knife to trim the tape.

Use super glue. Cyanoacrylate glue, better known as super glue, can seal small cracks. Use as little as possible, and carefully wipe up excess glue with a cotton swab or cloth.

If the touchscreen still works, you can replace the glass yourself for about $10-$20. The tools required will depend on your type of phone.

Ask the manufacturer to fix it. If your phone is still under warranty, the manufacturer may replace your device for free. Even if the warranty has expired, the manufacturer may fix it for a price. Most manufacturer warranties don’t cover accidental damages, but you can purchase secondary warranties that do.

Ask your mobile carrier to fix it. Your mobile provider may offer phone repair services at a discount to customers. Call customer support or visit a local store for help.

Take it to a repair shop. Depending on your device’s model, screen replacement can run about $50-$200. If the touchscreen functionality is damaged, there will be an extra charge.

Trade-in your phone. If you’re due for an upgrade, you might as well trade-in your broken device and use the money you get to buy a new one. Websites like uSell and Glyde will buy your broken phone for about half the price you paid for it. There are also sites specifically for selling used iPhones.

One of the most common issues with an iPhone or Android is having a broken or cracked phone screen. The screen can be damaged in numerous ways, but the most common are impacts from being dropped or struck. But what is more important is whether the screen that covers the LCD or the LCD itself has been damaged. There is a significant difference between a broken LCD screen and having a cracked phone screen. Understanding that process may come down to whether to repair, fix a cracked screen or replace a broken phone screen that not working is the right answer.

Does a Cracked Screen Affect Your Phone?

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

The answer is yes and no. You probably know someone that has had a cracked screen on their phone for a long time with no detriment to its performance. However, if the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), digitizer, or flex cable has been damaged, then it will affect your phone will display and react to your touch commands.

Is It Safe To Use Your Phone With A Cracked Screen?

A cracked screen will affect how you view your phone compared to an unbroken screen. There will be small points under the cracked area that may not be well seen. But as long as the LCD portion is unharmed, then it will not affect the performance of your phone in terms of what it can display.

However, since the screen is part of the digitizer, it is possible that your swipes and presses may not have the same effect as before. You may have to put more pressure on the screen to get it to respond. Or in some cases, it may not respond at all if the flex cable has been damaged or compromised.

How Do You Know if Your LCD Screen is Broken?

Broken LCD: However, if your phone is suffering from a broken LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen, that is a different matter. The symptoms of the LCD itself being damaged are as follows.

  • Black spots
  • Discolored areas
  • Screen failing to light up

If you are seeing any of these three symptoms, then it is most likely your phone has a broken LCD screen and it will need to be repaired. To repair or fix the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is more expensive compared to replacing a cracked phone screen, but it can be done if you visit the dealer or repair shop.

What To Do if Your Phone Screen is Broken?

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

The best way to remedy a cracked phone screen is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Adding a 9H hardness screen protector and shockproof phone case combined with carrying your iPhone or Samsung in a place where it cannot be bent, sat upon, or dropped will minimize the potential for damage.

The more steps you can take to prevent your smartphone from becoming damaged, the less likely you will have to deal with a cracked or broken phone screen. We also recommend the best ways to recover data from a broken android screen.

But no amount of preventative measures can guarantee that your smartphone will never be damaged. If you discover a crack on the phone screen or any damage to your phone, the first thing you should do is a functional check. Take a few seconds to test out the touch commands such as presses and swipes.

Observe the display for any signs of damage to the LCD. Once you know the type of damage that is present, you can take the proper steps to have it corrected.

A cracked phone screen will need a replacement along with the flex cable for the digitizer. These are fairly common items and with a little instruction along with the right tools, many people can do the replacement themselves if you so desire.

How To Fix A Cracked LCD Screen On Phone?

A cracked LCD on phone scrren display is another matter as the replacement will be more expensive. In this case, you will probably want to talk to the dealer to fix the cracked screen or take it to the repair store. They can put back the LCD screen replacement and get your phone back in order, although you will want a free estimate first.

A cracked phone screen can be annoying, but a broken LCD screen needs to be fixed quickly before the damage can spread. Knowing what to do and where to go can help you when facing a broken screen for your iPhone or Android.

What Is An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Screen On The Phone?

The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is the most common type of display used for mobile phones and tablets. This is because LCDs consume relatively little power and can be easily seen. The display itself consists of many tiny pixels that are made up of a molecule layer set between two electrodes that are transparent along with two filters that are polarized.

When an image is being shown on the LCD, the pixel will turn a particular color as directed by the electrodes and filters. With each pixel lighting up based on the information it receives, it reveals the image bit by bit to create a smooth display.

There are different types of LCD displays. Some are low in terms of cost, power consumption, and quality such as the STN. Conversely, higher-quality displays such as the TFT offer better imagery but at a higher price and power consumption. Chances are the Liquid Crystal Display screen you are using is transflective in nature. That means it is both transmissive to provide solid image quality and reflective under bright conditions.

If your screen is damaged, particularly the LCD, then the damage might be interfering with the display. Keep in mind that the digitizer may also have been damaged, so it is important to know the difference.

What Is A Touch Screen Digitizer?

The digitizer is not a Liquid Crystal Display, although it is used with LCDs. Instead, it is the device that converts the analog signals your device receives and converts them to digital ones. The glass piece that is attached to the Liquid Crystal Display is the digitizer which also allows you to use the device as a touch screen. When you swipe or press, it converts that information into actions so you can view new pages, press buttons, see more information, and the like.

The glass screen is the digitizer itself which is connected to your phone through a flex cable. For those who are purchasing a replacement glass, getting the flex cable should be part of your purchase. Of course, what you do will depend in large part on the type and extent of the damage to your phone.

Vegetable oil is good for more than sautéing and deep-frying veggies. It can also temporarily help hide a small crack in your phone.

Rub a dab of oil into the scratch, and remember you’ll need to replace it after a little time since it will rub off.

It’s important to note that this trick works only for small cracks. If your phone screen is shattered, vegetable oil is only going to make the situation worse.

Instead, it may be time to start googling “cell phone screen repair near me”.

Replacing a cracked LCD screen in an otherwise fully functional laptop is great for the environment (and for your wallet).

As we mentioned before, LaptopScreen.com has prevented over 170 thousand tonnes (374,785,846 pounds) of CO2 emissions by providing affordable LCD replacement to its customers who otherwise may have replaced their laptops instead; and this number continues to grow every day.

We are happy to enable our customers to act in an environmentally friendly way and at the same time we also try to reduce our own carbon foot print by using recycled packaging materials, providing paperless billing and shipping documentation and recycling our old electronics in a responsible manner.

But can one go even further and fix a cracked LCD panel?

We had our graphics department draw up a diagram of the anatomy of a Liquid Crystal Display (this does not apply to AMOLED displays that are used in smaller devices):

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Click on the image to expand it

LCD screen consists of a back-light assembly, LCD matrix and may include additional layers in front to add a glossy effect or to diffuse reflections and can also include a touchscreen layer overtop.

Only several years ago replacing a CCFL bulb was in some cases an acceptable way to save money to fix a 5 year old dim LCD, but with the mass adoption of LED back-lit displays and a gradual phase-out of the traditional CCFL bulbs, a modern LED back-light almost never fails.

This brings us to the most commonly broken part of a laptop screen – the LCD Matrix. At the core of the LCD Matrix there are two glass substrates that form a sealed vessel for the solution of liquid crystals which form the image. Each pixel is chemically printed on each of the two glass planes, and each LCD pixel has three transistors in it called sub-pixels which turn transparent (reorient themselves sort of like window blinds) when an electrical current is applied. The light passes from the back-light though the sub-pixel onto a color filter showing one of the three basic colors: Red, Green or Blue. By mixing the intensity and combination of these basic colors each pixel is able to display up to 16.5 million colors individually.

But what happens when the screen is cracked?

The liquid crystal containment vessel is broken, and those black splotches of ink that characterize a physically damaged LCD begin spreading through the cracks and leaking outside of the glass substates.

Unfortunately, even if the glass was to be superglued back together and the liquid crystal solution refilled, the thousands of transistors along the crack have been irreparably severed (1080p display has 2,073,600 pixels and 6,220,800 sub-pixel transistors) – stitching those together is akin to neural surgery. Because there are just so many little connections required to enable an LCD panel to work at all, it is also why there are virtually no fake or counterfeit laptop screens. A leading edge technological facility with cleanrooms and industrial filtration systems is required to create a modern working LCD.

Currently some touchscreens can be replaced separately from the LCD module – but even those are slowly becoming thinner and more sophisticated – some LCD modules already include the touch-screen in its construction – and in those cases the touchscreens can only be replaced together with the LCD.

Replacing an LCD is still a much better alternative to replacing your laptop. Not only is it better for the environment, but you also retain all your files and settings; you get to keep the device that you are used to; and with so many videos posted by our happy customers replacing their screens on their own for the first time in their lives – it is also fair to note that fixing your own stuff can be just as rewarding and exciting as shopping for a new device!

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Today, 40Tech is pleased to present a guest post from Donal James.

An iPad without a functioning digitizer screen is pretty much worthless. Unfortunately the screen is a fragile component that is easily damaged. Even a fall of a few feet is usually enough to shatter the delicate glass.

Damaged or broken digitizer screens are one of the most common problems encountered by iPad users. According to warranty company SquareTrade, ten percent of iPad 2 owners reported damaging their iPads within the first 12 months of ownership, with the number increasing to 20% within the first two years of ownership. Many times when the touch screen becomes cracked or broken, the LCD screen beneath is unharmed. If that’s the case, you don’t need a new iPad – you just need to replace the digitizer screen.

There are several options when it comes to dealing with a broken digitizer screen:

Buy a new iPad

iPads aren’t cheap. And there really isn’t anything wrong with the one you’ve got, except that the screen is damaged. If you can afford this option fine, if not – read on!

Take your damaged iPad back to Apple

This is probably the easiest way to handle the problem – return the iPad to the Apple Store for a replacement. However, there seems to be no consistent policy from Apple in the case of a broken digitizer screen. According to Apple warranty information posted on their site, the following types of damage are not covered by their warranty: Damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, liquid contact, fire, earthquake or other external cause; and defects caused by normal wear and tear or otherwise due to the normal aging of the Apple Product.

However, if you drop in on a few of the iPad forums you’ll see several different stories from posters about how Apple actually handles this issue, ranging from replacing the broken iPad with a new one for free, no questions asked, to charging several hundred dollars for a new screen. One poster even said they were told they had to buy a new iPad! The most common recommendation seemed to be: if you don’t like what they tell you at one Apple store, take it to another Apple store! (Editor’s note: when I had a non-screen related issue with my iPad, and took it to the Apple store, they did make a record of what was done, so I’m not sure whether shopping around would work or not).

Take your iPad to a third party repair shop

If you don’t want to deal with Apple, you can take your iPad to a third party repair shop. Since broken digitizer screens are a fairly common problem, you shouldn’t have any difficulty in locating a repair shop that can provide the service you need. There are local brick and mortar shops as well as online repair sites that can fix you screen good as new. A short online search will turn up the names of several repair shops that specialize in repairing broken digitizer screens.

Before you turn over your precious iPad to a complete stranger, do a little research. For instance, is the shop an Apple Authorized Service Provider? Even if your iPad isn’t under warranty, this is a good sign that the people working on your iPad know what they’re doing. Get an estimate before work begins. Also, prices for this service can vary greatly, especially when it comes to shipping costs. If you’re looking to save a little money on the bill, a local drop off shop may be your best choice.

Do it yourself

Many people don’t know it, but you can replace a digitizer screen yourself. There are many companies sell OEM replacement digitizer screens; you can usually get one for under a hundred dollars.

If you’re looking to save money this is the way to go. Replacing a damaged digitizer screen is a fairly straight forward DIY project requiring only a few simple tools and about forty five minutes to complete. Disconnecting the old screen and connecting the new one takes about ten seconds; most of the forty five minutes will be spent opening and resealing the iPad, which is the most difficult part of the procedure. Of course, if you screw up, you’ve got no one to blame but yourself.

Conclusion

It doesn’t matter how the digitizer screen became damaged; the important thing is getting it fixed, right? Whether you have a damaged screen or just lie awake nights trembling at the thought, isn’t it good to know you have several options available when it comes to dealing with this tragedy? Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. You’ll have to decide which one is right for you. But the result will be the same: your iPad will be good as new!

Are you debating on taking your iPad to a repair store? Have you been thinking about getting a replacement instead? Picking what to do with a broken iPad can be tricky.

In less than a decade, Apple already sold more than 360 million iPads. Due to the high demand, getting your iPad replaced at an official store isn’t much of a hassle.

But should you replace the whole device or simply get it repaired? Which option benefits you the most and which one is more affordable?

Below is our quick guide on whether you should opt for iPad repair or replacement.

1. Check Your iPad Warranty Before Anything Else

Before you get your iPad repaired by a third party, check your warranties first. You may not remember that you got an AppleCare+ warranty for your iPad when you bought it. You can go to Apple’s Warranty Status page online to check.

Having an AppleCare warranty can save you money on getting repairs for your tablet. AppleCare+ is an extended warranty for Apple devices. Apple could also send temporary devices for you to use while they are fixing your iPad.

If your warranty isn’t expired yet, great! Take advantage of it. If it has, you may need to look for other options.

2. Consider the Costs of Repair vs Replacement

If you’re on a budget, your focus will be on which of the two will save you more money. Even if you aren’t on a budget, you should still consider this. Is the price of a replacement going to be worth it?

Depending on how damaged your device is, it could be. If the damage is something as common as a broken screen, the repair fee could be cheaper. If you need an iPad battery replacement, it may be more expensive.

Note that if you keep coming back for repairs, it could be cheaper in the long run to get a replacement. Repair centers may ask for less than Apple does but if they don’t do the job right, you end up going back for more. You might also look for other better repair stores but your money still gets spent on more repairs.

There is also the choice of Apple repair services or third-party repair services. Third-party repair services charge cheaper than Apple does.

On top of that, if your iPad’s warranty is over, the Apple repair fees grow.

When you get your iPad repaired out of its warranty, you could spend as much as $649. The lowest cost for repairs by Apple outside of warranty is $199. Apple’s out-of-warranty fees differ by iPad generations or iPad model.

Buying a new iPad has the perks of getting a brand-new model. One way to balance out your spending from getting a new one is selling your old, damaged device. It’ll sell for less but you somehow gain some money back, at least.

Take note: sometimes a new device doesn’t always mean a better device.

3. Consider Your Time

How soon do you need your iPad? If it’s the device you work with, you’re going to want it fixed and back to you ASAP. Getting a replacement can take weeks, including the shipping.

The fastest iPad repair can take up to 20 minutes or less in a repair store. That kind of time often goes on minimal repairs. Why bother waiting for days and weeks when you can wait minutes for your repairs?

Screen damage is one of the most common iPad problems out there. It’s not surprising that many repair centers have experts in replacing or repairing broken screens. Since they’re already used to screen repairs, chances are they’re faster in doing the job, too.

There is also the matter of transferring all your data from your iCloud to your phone when you get a replacement. The installment of your apps can take a while. Having your iPad repaired is a simpler solution where your data will stay untouched.

If you cannot survive too long without a working iPad, your next best choice is to buy a new one. If losing a few days off of work will cost you more money in the long run, it’s smarter to buy a new iPad. Getting a new one will cost you less time.

Do note that you still need to do the data and app transfer via iCloud or Apple play store.

4. Feeling Sentimental? Go for iPad Repair

Are you looking to get your iPad fixed because it’s not charging? In cases where damage is extensive, some people may recommend getting a replacement instead. Or, they might give suggestions to buy a new one.

Sometimes, it’s not the price of a new iPad that keeps you from getting one. It could be that it already has sentimental value to you. It may hold memories or it’s simply easier to use and more familiar to you.

If you don’t want to let go of your iPad, your only choice is getting it repaired. Yet, Apple repair can be expensive, as we stated above. Despite your device’s sentimental value, it can’t be worth all that money.

One option is to look for a store that does iPad repairs. Note that having a third party with no Apple authorization open your iPad could void chances of Apple replacement. If you didn’t have plans on having Apple repair your device anyway, get on looking for a repair store.

Not everyone feels an attachment to their devices. Some people find it easier to part with their iPads. If you are part of the others that have sentiments over your device, make sure to take good care of it.

How to Repair a Broken Screen on a Tablet or Phone

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Breaking the screen on your mobile device doesn’t have to mean a brand new, expensive bit of kit. It’s actually quite easy, and cheap, to replace the glass once you get the hang of it. A tablet touchscreen can cost about US$50 if you perform the work.

I’ve replaced a few touchscreens on my roughly handled devices and found that tablet and phone construction both rely on the same basic concepts.

This is how to approach it.

First, get familiar with the makeup of your device. The construction is loosely the same across devices and generally includes a back cover, motherboard-containing frame, LCD-containing chassis, LCD, front frame or bezel, and the touch-sensitive glass sandwich — which is called a digitizer.

Tools that you’ll need include miscellaneous small screwdrivers, a heat gun, scissors, double-sided adhesive tape, canned air, work gloves and two dinner-table bowls to keep screws from getting lost.

Replacement digitizers can be obtained from auction sites like eBay.

The Teardown

Step 1: Remove the device’s back cover and pull the main battery.

Step 2: Loosen any stuck-on cabling that is now exposed, like the camera cable, for example. Then remove cables if the clasps are exposed. These cables simply slide out of any exposed sockets after clasps are released.

Tip: The tape-style cables are often held onto the frame and parts by adhesive, so tug gently to release.

Step 3: Unscrew the Phillips or Torx screws that hold the motherboard-containing back frame to the LCD-containing chassis and place the screws in a bowl for safe-keeping.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Tip: There can be lots of screws here — my Toshiba tablet has 14.

Step 4: Separate the back frame from the chassis by gently and carefully pulling the two apart.

Tip: Perform a visual check for any hidden, unremoved screws if you detect resistance. Look for any hidden cables that connect the glass to the LCD-containing chassis and remove if necessary.

Step 5: Remove any further cable assemblies that have become exposed by the separation of parts.

Tip: Maintain visual cues as to which cable to reattach where. For example, place them on the work surface face-up in the order of removal.

Step 6: Remove the LCD-containing chassis from the front frame or bezel and glass assembly by unscrewing a second batch of screws.

Store the second set of screws in a second bowl. Remove any further parts such as the camera.

Tip: Don’t touch the LCD face.

Step 7: Separate the existing, damaged glass from the bezel or front frame by waving the heat gun over the adhesive join and pulling apart. Wear gloves here because you will further break the glass.

Tip: Be patient while the heat gun loosens the adhesive and be careful not to break the bezel or front frame while removing the glass — you will need the bezel intact.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Replacing the Screen

Step 1: Attach fresh two-sided tape to areas of the bezel that have lost their stickiness. Use the existing adhesive where possible. Don’t allow tape to overlap the visual part of the glass.

Step 2: Look for any foam padding or seals and reattach.

Step 3: Thread the digitizer cable and remount the new digitizer glass to the bezel by firmly pressing it into place. Then remove any dust from the LCD and glass with canned air.

Tip: Do not touch the inside of the glass — you won’t be able to get rid of the fingerprints after assembly.

Finally, Reassemble

Reattach any parts, like the camera. Then reassemble chassis, frame and so on, in order.

You may have to assemble and disassemble a couple of times because the two sets of screws use similar holes. It’s easy to insert the initial set of screws into the wrong holes. You’ll only know you’ve done that when the second set won’t fit because you’ve already used the hole.

Tip: Look for solid connections when attaching cables. Ensure that the clasps are open first. Usually the up position is open.

In general, firm snaps indicate a good assembly. Always reapply any existing metallic tape. Count the screws. If you have any left over, backtrack.

Why Do Screens Break So Easily?

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

Ah, the perennial question: Why is this $1,000 device so prone to damage in the first place?

It all boils down to a difficult-to-reach compromise between consumer desires and engineering reality. In other words, we want phones with maxed out displays that also feature an elegant design. However, those slim edges and nearly bezel-less screens have to make some concessions in the durability department.

But regardless of the design specifics, it’s really about elastic energy, according to Red Zombie, a Clearfield, Utah-based repairs and accessories shop.

“When you drop your phone, elastic energy stored in the phone’s glass is converted into surface energy, which is why your glass cracks,” the company notes in a September 2018 blog post. “[W]hen you drop your phone, the force of impact will overcome the surface compression, resulting in small stresses that could lead to the shattering of your screen.”

To combat this reality, manufacturers like Apple and Samsung are constantly experimenting with tougher kinds of glass to absorb the impact. Red Zombie says most companies mix zinc into aluminum to create a strong base for the body of the phone.

What to Do Right Away

Broken screens come in various levels of severity—from light scratches, to spiderweb-like patterns, to entirely missing chunks of glass—and you could be dealing with anything from a completely shattered display and a broken phone, to a simple cosmetic issue.

First, you should assess the damage, which means getting your phone on a solid surface and under a good light, not just giving it a quick once-over before stuffing it back in your pocket. With a little bit of stress testing and careful prodding you should be able to work out whether the screen is about to fall off or fail completely. In a lot of cases it will stay in place, cracks and all, so you can at least keep tweeting, as long as the screen is still visible and functioning.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

If the phone is seriously damaged, back up your data as quickly as you can, making sure all of your photos, videos, and important files are saved somewhere else just in case it dies completely and you can’t get the phone working again. If it’s already stopped functioning, then a professional repair is probably your best bet.

Here are the solutions, in ascending order of professionalism.

Option #1: Packing Tape

The name of the game here is, “hold out until I’m eligible for an upgrade.” If you want to keep using the cracked phone, and don’t want to risk losing glass or slicing up your fingers, cover the screen with a layer of packing tape. Line everything up carefully and trim it with an X-Acto knife and it may look almost like a real screen protector.

Just like the iPad mini 4 and iPad air 2, the brand new iPad Pro does have the fingerprint scanner to make your life easier. However, accidents do happen. When the screen cracked, in order to keep the function of the Touch ID, you have to take out the original one and then transfer it to the new screen. While for iPad Pro, the structure of the home button is different from other Apple devices. Want to know the differences? Let’s take a closer look at it.

Tools Needed:
  • Heat Gun
  • Tweezers

Step 2. Peel off the black adhesive tape covering the home button flex cable connector.

PROFESSIONAL SCREEN REPAIRS

Glass replacement requires the careful removal of the cracked glass on your LCD screen. A stable heat source and hands with surgical precision allows the glass to slowly peeled off. Alkali-aluminosilicate glass aka Gorilla Glass is used to replace the old one to ensure that the integrity of the phone is maintained.

At BreakFixNow, we let you choose between 3 options available to suit your iphone screen repair needs.

OPTION 1: HOW WE DO IT

The glass only replacement which is the removal of the old cracked glass and using side adhesive we fit the new glass over the LCD. The downside of this procedure is that the sensitivity of the touchpanel will be now reduced and the colour contrast will be lighter than before. This procedure is only recommended for customers who are on a tight budget or waiting to change a new phone. Also the cheapest method.

OPTION 2: GLASS SCREEN REPLACEMENT DETAILS

The second option that BreakFixNow offers would be to replace the glass with commercial grade optical adhesive which all original screens are fitted with to give it a spanking new look. This option is slightly more expensive but the effects are astounding. Samsung only does entire LCD replacement and you can see their prices here.

OPTION 3: LCD SCREEN REPLACEMENT

Updated : There are various types of Grades of LCD in the market and we prefer using those OEM grades from manufacturers such as Foxxcon or LG which provide us with at least 3 Months warranty. Some repair places offer china lcd at very attractively cheap prices and are distinctive by having no warranty at all. These though cheap have high failure rates so we would advise you on avoiding such places.

LCD Failure: If you mobile device has a cracked screen but you are unsure if the LCD is working, bring it down for a diagnostic or send us a picture via whatsapp to 97292739. Our humble repair shop also does additional business support services such as data recovery for a low fee.

iPad Touch Screen Repair

We perform touch screen replacements for many of our customers. Generally, when dropped, the glass will smash leaving the iPad Digitizer shattered into pieces. Sometimes the touch screen will continue to function, but sometimes you won’t be so lucky. Thankfully this problem is easily fixed by replacing the digitiser screen, however if your picture no longer works then you may require a LCD replacement.

iPad LCD Replacement

A broken LCD is no problem for a Phone Ninja Technician. Most common symptoms include no display, a white screen, lines in the screen, dullness, or dead pixels. Sadly, if you have smashed the glass screen and have any of the symptoms listed above, then you may need to the replace the whole screen.

iPad Water Damage & Other Repairs

Water damage can be minimized by acting quickly. Firstly, turn off the device, dry it with a towel, and bring the gadget into us, and make sure you don’t charge it! Additional services we provide include battery replacements, not turning on issues, button problems, camera problems, and of course much, much more.

Apple’s Tablet Technical Specifications

Despite popular belief, Apple actually entered the tablet market in 1993 with the Newton MessagePad 100. A handful of successors followed before the line was discontinued in 1998. On April 3rd, 2010 they decided to try again, incorporating the tablet with the familiar iPhone interface. Despite being labelled as an oversized iPhone by many, Apple’s tablet sold 15 million units even before it’s successors launch.

Little over a year later the iPad 2 surfaced delivering more of the same, but with a dual-core Apple A5 processor, a 33% slimmer profile, a 10-hour battery life, and weighing in at 15% lighter on the scales. Apple later introduced the iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPad Pro series.

The ridiculous profit made from replacing cracked smartphone screens

The ridiculous profit made from replacing cracked smartphone screens

Find out how Apple and other smartphone companies make massive profits on little screens.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

HP did it with printers and ink. Gillette did it with razors and blades. And now, Apple and other smartphone manufacturers are doing it with replacement screens.

While not nearly as lucrative, and obviously not intentional, Apple, Samsung, and others are making bank replacing cracked smartphone screens. As of late 2014, Americans spent $23.5 billion replacing broken smartphones, according to SquareTrade data. The cost of replacement phones is increasing too, with SquareTrade estimating the cost of replacements hit $4.8 from 2013 to 2014.

Sometimes, it feels like my family is responsible for most of that sum.

But based on the reactions to a Facebook post, it seems that we’re all feeding the smartphone profit machine, and long after we fork out the cash to buy our iPhones or Android devices in the first place.

iCrack, iPay

Over the past few years, I’ve visited the Apple Store or third-party repair providers to fix what my children have broken… over and over again. (I admit that I cracked my screen once, so I’m also part of the problem.)

At $129 for each repair (without AppleCare), or even more if Apple deems that the underlying touchscreen or other internal systems have been damaged, I estimate that I’ve spent well over $2,500 fixing cracked iPhone screens.

This equates to a tidy profit of approximately $2,300 for Apple, based on estimates of the cost of materials. Not too shabby. Who wouldn’t want 90%-plus profit margins?

This is one reason third-party repair companies have entered the market. As one friend told me, “It’s best to avoid the Apple Store for repairs. Other folks do it for a fraction of the price.” The problem, however, is that those same “others” void my Apple warranty when they crack open the screen (pun intended).

So, I’m somewhat bound to Apple being expensive when I first buy the phone, and then when I pay to have its screens replaced again… and again… and again.

The cost of an iFix

For those wondering how I arrived at the profit margin estimate, it’s admittedly a bit of guesswork. Aside from straight glass screen replacements, Apple didn’t tell me exactly what it had to replace (except when it had to completely replace the unit, which has happened a few times).

But looking at a teardown analysis, the cost of replacing the parts is trivial for Apple, especially if the company uses refurbished phones, as one commentator notes.

How to replace a broken ipad 3 screen

While the cost of the glass isn’t broken out in this teardown analysis, informed estimates put the cost at roughly $10. (You can buy replacement glass online for $10.95.)

Of course, Apple isn’t morally obligated (or even wise) to sell replacement glass at cost, but it’s clear that the company makes a lot of profit on selling $129 replacement screens, which can be done in under five minutes. (Sure, Apple runs a bunch of tests to ensure the integrity of the system, but not $119 worth of tests.)

Other smartphone manufacturers, like Samsung, are the same.

There is some room for hope. According to SquareTrade tests, Apple’s newer, larger phones are less susceptible to breaking (though this hasn’t stopped my wife and I from proving that these phones still crack without too much encouragement).

This isn’t Apple’s or Samsung’s or anyone else’s fault but mine. As my sister told me, “My son’s lame feature phone never breaks.” So, I’m creating an opportunity for rampant screen cracking simply by purchasing iPhones for kids who are less than super-careful.

Regardless of whose fault, it sure is expensive, and I wouldn’t mind getting a bit of a break on the cost of replacing a very cheap piece of glass.

Front Top Outer Glass Lens Screen Replacement

Disclaimer: These instructions come straight from the manufacturer. Repair at your own risk. Digital Supply USA is not responsible for any broken items. Digital Supply USA is simply a parts supplier there for doesn’t answer technical questions.

Step 1- Front Glass

  • Cut a piece of packaging tape the size of the screen and stick it on top of the glass screen. This will help you remove the broken pieces of glass later. (this is especially helpful if your screen has a lot of cracks)
  • If your screen still has the outer screen protector on it then you may not need to use the tape.
  • Use the plastic opening tool to pry open the back and front cases.
  • Hold a hair dryer or heat gun about 3 inches from your phone. Heat the front glass lens for about 3 to 7 minutes (depending on how hot it is) to loosen the adhesive that holds the glass to the digitizer. The glass lens should be just too hot to touch. Don’t heat it hotter than this as you can damage the LCD digitizer.
  • **you may not need to use heat if your screen is so cracked that you can see the digitizer below it and can peel the pieces of glasses off of the LCD digitizer.
  • Using the guitar pick or plastic pry tool very carefully start separating the glass piece or pieces if it has been shattered from the digitizer.
  • When you are separating the glass start at the top outer borders and work your way in towards the center and bottom.
  • You may need to heat the glass multiple times to keep it hot as you do this.
  • Be extra careful when you get to the bottom because the menu buttons are glued to the glass.
  • Be careful not to damage the cables. Separate the screen from the top to the bottom to the point where you can see the menu/home button cables.
  • Remove the speaker mesh cover from your old phone as you will need to transfer it to your new glass lens.
  • Carefully remove the rest of the glass pieces and adhesive from the digitizer.
  • You can use Alcohol, Windex or WD40 to help get the rest of the remaining adhesive off of the digitizer. Be careful not to use too much though.
  • Make sure the glass lens and digitizer is smudge free. ( you can do this by using a lent free cloth)
  • Cut a small piece of the adhesive tape and use it to keep the buttons in place.
  • It is important to make sure the buttons line up exactly
  • Put pieces of the adhesive tape on the 4 corners of the digitizer (top and bottom)
  • If the new glass lens has a protective plastic film then remove it now. (be careful not to smudge the glass)
  • Adhere the new glass lens to the digitizer. (most people find it easiest to start at the top and slowly work your way down.
