How to replace the alternator of a 1998 isuzu trooper

Almost all of us have experienced the problem where either your 1998 Isuzu Trooper battery or alternator just conks out, and you can’t make out which one to replace. Its not easy finding out exactly which part of your 1998 Isuzu Trooper is giving you the trouble, but here are a few tips by which you can find out whether you have 1998 Isuzu Trooper battery problems or alternator problems.

Check Your Battery First

Start by checking your battery first. In cold weather, it’s very common to have a dead battery that just won’t start. Check the battery gauge on the dashboard to make out if the battery is sending a charge even when you have switched off the1998 Isuzu Trooper If there is a dim flickering light, then it means that something is using up power from the battery. You can then proceed to check the connections you commonly use, like the automatic window openers, windshield wipers and the brake lights. Switch them all off and try the battery again. Clean off any corrosion and check to see whether the battery will charge up again. Then check the battery voltage with a voltmeter. It should read close to 12.6 volts when the 1998 Isuzu Trooper is off. Then turn on the engine again and check the battery. If the voltmeter reads between 14-15 volts then the battery is normal. But if the battery reads over 15 volts or less than 13 volts, then there might be a problem with the voltage regulator, the wiring or the alternator. If the battery just wont keep a charge even when you have turned off all accessories, then it’s time to take a look at the other systems that work with the battery to run your 1998 Isuzu Trooper .

Check the Alternator

Test the alternator to make sure that it can start up the battery. If the battery is working properly and nothing is wrong with it, then it’s the alternator that will more likely cause a problem. A simple test to check the working of the alternator is by running your 1998 Isuzu Trooper ; and then unplugging the positive connection of the battery. If the 1998 Isuzu Trooper stops, then you most likely have a problem with the alternator. Another simple test is to check your interior lights. An alternator charges your battery when the 1998 Isuzu Trooper is running. If the interior and dashboard lights come on brightly but slowly start to fade, then it indicates a problem whit the alternator. It demonstrates that the alternator cannot keep a charge when the 1998 Isuzu Trooper is running. Another sign is that the 1998 Isuzu Trooper lights run brightly when you race your1998 Isuzu Trooper but when you slow it down, the lights start to lose power.

We also recommend that if you have a dead battery, get a jump start done and check the battery and alternator at the garage. Most garages will do this absolutely for free and it just takes about five minutes.

Related Questions and Answers

If you find yourself wondering, how much is an alternator for a 1998 Isuzu Trooper , here is a quick rundown of the costs. Replacing an alternator can be fairly expensive. The total cost will depend on the vehicle you are driving, as well as if you choose a brand new, or a rebuilt alternator. If you can do the work yourself, a rebuilt alternator can cost as little as $ 80 for older vehicles. An alternator for a newer vehicle can run $ 150 to $ 200. If you need a professional to install your new alternator, budget between $ 300 and $ 500, depending on your 1998 Isuzu Trooper . High end sports and luxury cars will cost even more. What are the Main Components of an Alternator?

The alternator helps maintain the voltage of the 1998 Isuzu Trooper battery. There are four main components of an alternator . The stator and rotor are belt-driven magnets encased in copper wiring. They create a magnetic field. The belt is driven by a pulley that connects to the engine. This spins the rotor and creates a magnetic field. The stator uses this to create voltage and electricity which flows to the diode. The diode assembly than converts the AC electricity to DC, which is used by the 1998 Isuzu Trooper battery. Finally, the voltage regulator acts as a surge protector for the alternator. Where Can I Find Second Hand Alternators for Sale?

Second hand alternators are pretty easy to find. Visit a local junkyard or parts recycler and they should have a wide selection of alternators. Another good source is the want ads of your local newspaper. Car parts are normally listed in the automotive section of the want ads. Craigslist is another good source of 1998 Isuzu Trooper parts. People parting out vehicles often sell the parts online and if you know what you’re looking for, bargains can be found. Auto parts stores often sell second hand or rebuilt 1998 Isuzu Trooper parts, including alternators. Doing a web search for used alternators will bring up a number of sites. It’s a good idea to check reviews of any sites before ordering, because there can be some shifty operators out there. What Do I Use for Checking a Car’s Alternator Output?

Checking a 1998 Isuzu Trooper alternator output is fairly simple, if you have the correct tools. A digital voltmeter is required. These can be purchased at an auto parts store. They usually cost between $ 25 and $ 40. This procedure is easier if you have two people. One will hook up the voltmeter and the other will start the 1998 Isuzu Trooper at the right time. A voltmeter hooks up to the1998 Isuzu Trooper s battery, just like jumper cables. Once the 1998 Isuzu Trooper is started and is being revved, you should see an output reading on the voltmeter between 13.5 and 14.4 volts. If the reading is significantly above or below this number, you should have have the 1998 Isuzu Trooper checked out by a professional.

How to Tell if Your Alternator Has Gone Bad

A dead alternator can cause all kinds of headaches, but how can you tell if your alternator is going out before it is too late? When you try to start your 1998 Isuzu Trooper and you hear a clicking sound, that signals your 1998 Isuzu Trooper is dead you are left with several options as to why.

Usually, the problem falls into one of two categories: a dead 1998 Isuzu Trooper battery or a loose battery connection. If the battery is dead, it does not mean this is the only problem you now face. Other causes for a 1998 Isuzu Trooper failing to start are a bad starter or relay. If the starter is good, the last likely culprit is a bad alternator. If the alternator is bad, the battery will most likely be dead as well. So what symptoms can alert you ahead of time that your alternator is going bad?

To know which symptoms indicate you may have a bad alternator, you should first understand what an alternator’s function is. An alternator’s job is to generate an electrical charge to recharge your battery as your 1998 Isuzu Trooper depletes the electrical charge the battery carries. Without recharging, eventually all of the electrical systems inside the vehicle will stop working. Alternators fail for a variety of reasons, but driving for long periods of time in hot weather is often the culprit.

Another problem is a bad diode inside of the alternator. Diodes are essential to the charging process, and if they begin to fail, the alternator will quickly go bad. So what can you do to determine if your alternator is going bad before it is completely dead?

Car Battery or Alternator? Learn How to Tell The Difference.

Two of the easiest methods to determine if your alternator is dying are the headlight test and the battery test. The headlight test is quick and easy, and should be performed outdoors to ensure that you don’t have a carbon monoxide buildup inside your garage. To perform the headlight test, start your 1998 Isuzu Trooper and turn on your headlights. With the vehicle in park, press on the accelerator while a second person observes the headlights. If the headlights flicker, dim or get brighter when the accelerator is pressed down, your alternator may be bad. No change in headlight brightness indicates that your alternator is likely fine.

A battery test is easy to perform and can be done at home. First, open the hood and start the1998 Isuzu Trooper While the engine is running, remove the negative cable from the battery. If the vehicle stalls or dies, the alternator is likely bad. This happens because the alternator is not generating enough electricity to keep the engine running on its own. If the 1998 Isuzu Trooper continues to the run, the problem may lie with the battery.

Unfortunately, there is only one way to know for certain if your alternator is bad, and that is to have it tested. Most service stations can test an alternator, but they will charge you for the labor. Many auto parts stores will test alternators, starters and batteries for free, though you will have to remove the alternator to have it tested at an auto parts store. Once connected to a terminal, an alternator should test between 12 and 13.5 volts. Any number less than this means the alternator is probably bad, while a higher number indicates that the alternator is overcharging the battery.

I need a little help diagnosing a 1998 Isuzu Trooper.

Here are the symptoms.

When I first received the Trooper the battery was dead. Replaced with a brand new one. The new one was not being charged as indicated by the dash lights and volt gauge at 11 volts.

I removed the alternator and it tested bad. Took it to a local reputable re builder and had it rebuilt. Installed the rebuilt alternator and all of the dash lights are gone. I let the truck sit and idle in my shop for about an hour and had no issue assumed truck was fixed.

As soon as putting a load on the system it fails to charge. Head lights, and heater fans and radio kill the battery.

Removed the rebuilt alternator had it bench tested. It bench tested to 14.1 Volts and passed the bench test.

Volt meter shows only 12.6 coming from the alternator no more no less in essence when on the truck the alternator. Which explains why it will run the truck with no load but dies when headlights, fans and radio are run.

Cables are good and have been replaced. Only popped fuse I found was a radio fuse. There are no alternator charging relays on the truck that I can find (this truck does not have the mysterious blue charging relay).
