Google Photos is one of the best photography apps in both the Play Store and the App Store. The most common reasons why people love the app is due to its offer of free unlimited storage for photos and videos. What most people do not know is that the extremely advanced AI-powered recognition capabilities of the app allows you to search for anything in Google Photos.

You can search for anything in Google Photos. You can ask Google Photos to search for an event that you have attended, pictures of a specific person in your photos, pictures of animals, pictures of things, and pictures of specific places. The app’s AI face-recognition capacity is powerful enough to identify and show pictures of your pets. By the end of this article, you should learn how to search for people, things, animals, and places in Google Photos.

Method 1: Search Using Android and iPhone

There are two ways to search for anything on Google Photos. You can use keywords or use Google Photos’ image-recognition feature.

Search Your Google Photos Using Keywords on Android and iPhone

You can use keywords to search for almost anything on Google Photos. The search can be specific and as long as you use generic keywords, there’s a high chance that Google Photos will return great results. Here’s how to search Google Photos using keywords:

1. Install the Goole Photos app. Depending on your device, you can install Google Photos from the App Store or get Android’s version of Google Photos. Both apps’ user interfaces are almost identical so you should not have issues following through with the steps in this article.

2. After installing the app, open Google Photos.

3. If this is the first time you use the app, you need to sign in to your Google account.

4. Enter a keyword that you want to search in the Search Box located at the top part of the screen. For tutorial purposes, let’s enter the keyword, “mall”.

5. Google Photos will show results of your photos with “malls” on it.

Tip: You can further trim down the results by being more specific. For this example, we’ve added a specific city on our initial keyword and Google Photos returned accurate results.

Search Your Google Photos For Photos of People

You can search for photos of people on your Google Photos by doing the following:

4. Tap on the Search Box located at the top part of the screen.

5. Google Photos will show results of your photos with “malls” on it.

6. The list of suggested searches shows a row with faces on them. Alternatively, you can tap on the See More button to see more photos of people on your phone.

7. Tap on a face to see more photos of that person.

Method 2: Search Using Computer

Like searching in Google Photos for mobile devices, there are also two ways to search for anything in Google Photos. You can use keywords or use Google Photos’ image-recognition feature.

Search Your Google Photos Using Keywords on Android and iPhone

You can search for photos of people on your Google Photos using your browser by doing the following:

1. From your PC or laptop, open your preferred web browser.

2. From the browser, log into your Google account.

3. After logging into your account, go to photos.google.com/search

4. Click on the Search box and enter the keyword that you want to search. For this example, let’s use the keyword, “cars”.

Use your phone’s screen saver feature to show off your favorite images saved to your Google Photos. Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge

If you have more images in your Google Photos app than you know what to do with, why not put your phone to work displaying them? With a few simple steps, you can use your Android phone’s screen saver feature to turn your phone screen into a digital picture frame while it charges.

This works especially well for phones with wireless charging (so you can see your photos with the phone propped up on a charger), but it will work with any kind of charging mode or if you connect your phone to a dock. It’s built right into the operating system, and it’s a neat, easy way to show off some of your favorite photos.

I used a Motorola Moto G Stylus (2022) for the steps below, but the process is very similar on a Samsung or Pixel phone. You’ll need to have the photos you want to display in a Google Photos album.

  • Go to Settings > Display.
  • Tap Advanced to reveal more menu options (if you need to) and select Screen saver.
  • Tap Current screen saver and choose the Google Photos app icon. This will take you back to the main screen saver menu page. From there, tap the gear icon next to Current screen saver.
  • From here, you can access some preferences, like turning the animated zoom effect on or off. To select which photos the screen saver will show, choose your Google account to bring up a list of your Google Photos albums. (You may also see a list of the albums you have on your device.) Place a checkmark next to the ones that you want to include.
  • Navigate back to the main screen saver menu page and tap When to start to choose when the screen saver will turn on — either while charging, docked, or both.
  • Navigate back to the main screen saver menu page, and tap Start now (or Preview) to see what it will look like.

How to search your google photos on android

Find the screen saver option on the display settings page. It may be nested under “Advanced” settings.

How to search your google photos on android

You can choose which albums to show and tweak a few display preferences.

You’re done! Here are a few additional pointers for your brand-new, no-additional-cost digital photo frame:

  • Obviously, vertically oriented photos will look best.
  • Choose photos in which the subject is centered, or else they might be cropped right out of the picture.
  • If you do have a lot of horizontally oriented photos, turning off the “photos fill screen” option will help, but your images will look quite small on your display.

The screen saver will always start with the first photo in the album and continue showing them in whatever order the album is sorted in. If that sounds a little too repetitive, you can create an auto-updating album. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start a new album in Google Photos. In the app, you’ll tap the Library tab at the bottom of the screen and select the plus sign for a new album. Or, choose an existing album by going to the same Library tab and selecting an album.
  • Give your new album a title, and under add photos tap Select people & pets. Pick the subjects you want to include in the album. Google will automatically identify them in new images uploaded to Google Photos and add them to your album.
  • If you’re using an existing album, tap on the three dots in the upper-right corner, select Options, and under Automatically add photos, tap the plus sign and select who you want to include. Check Also add existing photos if you want.
  • New images will appear at the beginning of the album, so they’ll be the first to display when your screen saver starts.

You can find photos quickly by searching for specific words, and you can even copy and paste text.

Katie is a Writer at CNET, covering all things how-to. When she’s not writing, she enjoys playing in golf scrambles, practicing yoga and spending time on the lake.

When you take screenshots on the daily, it’s easy for them to become buried under the other pictures you’ve taken and harder for you to find the image you’re looking for. Now, a new feature in Google Photos will let you search for pictures with text in them so you can quickly find what you’re looking for. You can even copy and paste the text when you find it.

The new tool makes it easier to find a recipe you saved, a funny meme you screenshotted or your bank account number. You can also use it to pinpoint a photo that you took of a Wi-Fi password, business card or phone number.

Google Lens powers this search feature. The company’s image-searching software is available in Google Photos for Android and iPhone ($899 at Amazon) . It’s still rolling out, however, so if you don’t see it yet, keep checking daily (and make sure the app is updated).

Here’s how to use the Google Photos search tool to find your photos.

You can copy and paste any text on the photo.

Screenshot by Katie Conner/CNET

1. Open the Google Photos app.

2. Tap on the search bar and type what you’re looking for. For example, if you took a screenshot in Yelp or Google Maps of a coffee shop you want to try, just type coffee or the name of the business.

3. Once Google has spotted the image for you, tap on it.

4. Tap the Google Lens button on the bottom of the screen. It’s a square with a dot in the center.

5. Google will highlight all of the text in the photo. Tap on the words you want to copy.

6. Select Copy text.

7. Now you can paste the text wherever you need, like in the messages app or in a browser.

Google today announced a number of changes ahead for its popular Google Photos app for mobile devices. With the update, the company plans to make it easier to organize, import and sort through your albums, as well as access shared content and screenshots, the company says. Some of the new features are designed to make the Google Photos app work better with on-device folders, while others are focused on sorting through larger libraries that have grown over the years and may have become unwieldy.

For example, the app’s Library tab is getting a redesign that will allow you to view your photos organized in a grid or list where you can now filter by type — including albums, shared albums, favorites or on-device folders — then sort them as you’d like. This design tweak will likely be welcomed by those who now have far too many galleries to keep track of, and need a way to narrow things down when hunting for photos.

Another feature is designed to help Google Photos become your centralized photo storage location, if it’s not already. Below the album grid, Google Photos is adding a new “import photos” section alongside the buttons for the (newer) Locked Folder, utilities, archive and trash features. This import option will allow users to copy photos from rival services including iCloud, Facebook and Pixieset; digitize their photos, videos and film; back up from device folders; move photos into Google Photos from a camera; or scan photos using Google’s PhotoScan.

Not all these import options are new — PhotoScan, for instance, used to be under Utilities. And previously, users could set their app to back up the photos on their device. iOS users could even sync their Favorites from their iPhone’s photo gallery to Google Photos’ favorites. There was also a way to import to Google Photos from other services within Facebook and iCloud. But there wasn’t a dedicated destination inside the Google Photos app where you could find all the different ways to import photos.

Meanwhile, the app’s Sharing tab is also getting an update. It will now include sections for sharing photos with a partner, shared albums and conversations. This will make it easier to find, view and manage your various shared photos and videos, Google notes. This update will roll out today on Android and will come in the near future to users on iOS.

For Android users, Google Photos will also offer access to your screenshots saved on your device. Many Google Photos users don’t back up their device screenshots, in order to save on storage space, but still need to reference those photos at times. They’ll soon be able to tap on a new shortcut that appears at the top of their main photo grid to go directly to their screenshots, Google says.

Another Android-only feature will present users with contextual suggestions to copy text, crop or use Google Lens when viewing a screenshot. This follows the launch of Apple’s Live Text feature, which now allows users to copy and paste text from photos.

While Google Photos would often make suggestions of how to improve photos, its tips would be buried in the Utilities menu and wouldn’t be focused on screenshots, generally, beyond recommending their removal in the app’s clean-up suggestion to “clear the clutter.” But this feature acknowledges that users are saving screenshots because they actually want to do something with them, and don’t necessarily consider them all disposable. This particular feature is “coming soon” to Android, Google says. (It’s already live on iOS).

Except where noted otherwise, the new features will roll out gradually to Google Photos users on iOS and Android over the weeks ahead.

Google Photos is one of the world’s most popular photo storage and sharing services. Android phones tend to come with Google Photos pre-installed on the home screen and people often use it instead of the Android-native gallery app.

Still, you may want some photos saved on your actual device. Downloading photos and videos from Google Photos is entirely possible and rather straightforward. Here’s how to do it.

Download Photos on Android/iOS Devices

Here’s how to download photos from Google Photos on your Android/iOS phone or tablet. First of all, you need to make sure that the Google Photos app is installed on the device. If not, go to Google Play/App Store and download it. Once downloaded and installed, tap the app’s icon to use it. If you’re prompted to log in, use your Google credentials to do it.

Downloading photos and videos to the computer is a very common thing. You might want to edit the videos, backup the files, and so on. The approach here is somewhat different from mobile/tablet versions of the Google Photos app. In fact, you won’t even use the app but just the website.

How to search your google photos on android

Go to photos.google.com and select the photo that you want to save. Open it and then navigate to the upper-right corner of the screen, click the three-dot icon and select Download. This will save the photo(s) that you’ve selected to your computer.

Downloading Multiple Photos from Google Photos

Naturally, you can download more than one photo from Google Photos. To do this, simply select multiple photos, whatever device you’re using, navigate to the three-dot icon, click/tap it, and select Download. This will automatically download all the selected photos to your device.

How to search your google photos on android

Another way to select and download multiple photos is by selecting them by date. Above each series of photos that you took on a day, you have a date they were taken on. There should be a checkmark that you can select near that date. Selecting that checkmark will automatically check all the photos taken on that particular day. Click the three-dot icon and select Download to save all photos to your device.

This how-to guide will help you find out how to back up the photos on your phone using Google Photos or Dropbox.

With the ubiquity of high-quality smartphone cameras and instant messaging services, it is not uncommon for people to struggle with their smartphone storage getting too full because of images. If you are one of those people, this quick how-to guide will show you how you can back up your photos to a cloud storage service so that you can free up space on your phone.

Google Photos

Most Android phones come with Google’s Photos which is a photo-sharing and storage service that allows users to back up their pictures on Google drive seamlessly. If you don’t have the app already, it is available as a free download on the Google Play Store. Here is how you can back up all your photos using the app:

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Click on your profile image in the top right-hand corner.
  3. There will be button marked “Turn on backup” under a message which says “Backup is off” by default unless you have turned it on.
    Click on the button.
  4. You will be met by a dialog box, click the button that says “Turn on backup”
  5. Here, Google Photos will present you with two options: you can either backup the photos in their original quality which will consume more Drive space or you can choose to back them up with “Storage saver” mode which will save them with a slightly lower quality.
  6. Hit confirm.
  7. Google Photos will begin backing up your pictures to the cloud

Dropbox

If you want to back up the images on your phone, Google Photos is far from your only option. Dropbox is a file-hosting service that offers many of the same functionalities as Google Drive. But unlike Google, it only offers 2GB of storage space to users who are on the free plan. If you need more space than that, you are going to have to sign up for one of dropbox’s many plans.

Find visually similar photos on your mobile phone and iPad with Reverse Image Search by Google

or drag and drop

PNG, JPG, GIF up to 5MB

Upload an image from your Photo Library, iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or take a new picture with your phone’s camera and reverse search.

Everything you wanted to know about reverse photo search with Google Images

Google’s search by image feature is currently available for desktops and not your iPad or mobile phone. Thus, if a friend has sent you a forwarded image on WhatsApp or Facebook that you’d like to verify, you’ll have to first transfer the photograph to a desktop and then perform a reverse image search.

Too much work, right?

With Reverse Photos, you can perform reverse image searches on Android and iPhone in few easy steps. Just click the “Upload Image” button and choose an image from the photo gallery of your mobile phone. Next, click the “Show Matching Images” button and it will send your photo into Google’s image database and show visually similar photos.

How to do Reverse Image Search on your Mobile Phone

Google Reverse Image Search helps you quickly discover visually similar images from around the web. Upload a photograph from your desktop to Google Images and it will show you related images used on other websites and also different sizes of the same photo almost instantly.

What Is a Reverse Image Search used for?

Journalists can use the reverse search option to find the original source of an image or to know the approximate date when a picture was first published on the Internet. Photographers can use ‘search by image’ feature to know about other websites that are using their photographs without permission.

Propaganda campaigns are rampant during the Ukraine and Russian conflict. Open-source intelligence OSINT enthusiasts and practitioners on Twitter and Reddit are using reverse image search to verify the source and authenticity of viral photos as they may be used to spread disinformation.

Image Search & Privacy

Reverse Search is useful for verifying the source of photographs, WhatsApp images, screenshots and Internet memes. Tinder and Facebook users have usedSearch by Image to research profile pictures of their potential dates, travellers use it for finding location of photos while matrimonial sites use reverse search to detect fake uploads.

All your uploaded images are hosted anonymously on the Google Cloud and cannot be discovered by other users. All photos are automatically deleted from cloud storage within few hours of uploading.

New Google Photos feature is said to function based on AI

  • New button on Google Photos said to use filters for searching images
  • ‘More like this’ button will list photos from different times and places
  • Google Photos users can select age, location, and more as filters

Google Photos is reportedly getting a new feature that allows users to find similar images on the platform. The newly added ‘More like this’ button in Google Photos is said to let users search for similar images in the gallery from different periods and locations. The latest button is reportedly has been placed between ‘Add to album’ and ‘Move to Archive’ icons on the app. Recently, Google added a ‘Memories’ feature to the Web version of Google Photos. With this, when users log in to Google Photos from a computer, they can see Memories at the top of their gallery with photos and recent highlights.

The new ‘More like this’ button on Google Photos was first spotted by Russian Telegram channel Google News, as reported by Android Police. With the latest feature, users can easily find a particular photo, says the report. If the feature is enabled on your Google Photos, tapping the ‘More like this’ button from the three-dot menu at the top right of a photo on Google Photos will start scanning the image. Then it will look for a similar set of images saved in your Google Photos library. The feature is said to make use of Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) machinery to scan similar photos.

As per the report, Google Photos will also offer search for matching photos using filters. Users can select age, location, or what’s in the picture as filters. Additionally, the new feature is said to offer many sorting options like locations including parks, schools, cars, food, animals, and more to narrow down the search.

As mentioned, Memories on Google Photos for Web started rolling out in October. It will display a curated selection of slideshows taken from both old and recent images of the user. Additionally, users can choose to hide photos of certain people or time periods from showing up in Memories.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could see photos on a map to remember where you were when taking a picture? You can do just that in the Google Photos mobile app.

Google Photos is one of the best ways to store your images, with free unlimited storage at high quality. But wouldn’t it be great if you could see them on a map and remember where you went on your holidays? The good news is that you can now do that in the Google Photos mobile app.

Photos on Location

I don’t know about you, but I personally tend to take most of my photos when I’m on vacation or visiting a new place. There’s just something about visiting somewhere I haven’t been before and feeling the need to capture those feelings. There’s also the idea of sharing those images online just a little bit later, to make your friends jealous.

If the above is all true, you will inevitably find yourself wanting to find that specific picture from your Gran Canaria vacation eventually. But if that “eventually” happens to be two years later, that might prove to be more complicated than initially thought.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could see your pictures on a map and explore them that way? Maybe even see where you captured the largest amount of images? Luckily, the Google Photos team seems to have thought the same way. Therefore, you can now see your images in a cool map view. Let’s see how.

Before we proceed, it is important to mention that the feature is available in the latest version of the app. As long as you are up-to-date, you should have it available.

Also, the screenshots below are taken in the Android version of the app. The iOS one isn’t very different, though.

Google Photos on the Map

While you would normally think that new features would make their way to the app’s main screen, they don’t. Therefore, once you’ve started it, tap Search at the bottom of the screen.

How to search your google photos on android

This will take you to a screen where you have a whole lot of image searching options. Using the same technology as Google Lens, Photos can tell exactly what’s in the images. That allows it to create collections based on that information. You will find images of things like Palaces, Parks, Churches and many other things, depending on what you like to capture.

However, that’s not what we’re here for. If you look towards the top side of the screen. Under the Search bar, you will notice a Places section.

If you tap View all, a list of places you’ve visited and taken pictures in will be shown, with access to the images in question.

Tap Explore map in that section.

How to search your google photos on android

This is where things become very interesting. You will get a map, complete with heat areas, showing where you took more pictures. Tap any of those areas; pictures taken in that location will be shown to you at the bottom of the screen.

How to search your google photos on android

For the purpose of this example, I’ve shown pictures taken in the UK. However, you can zoom in and out as much as you want and the map and marked areas will adjust. The feature can even be used as a form of travel diary, but you might be better off using Google Location History for that purpose.

How to search your google photos on android

The new feature is quite easy to use, making Google Photos an even more functional tool.

All you need to do is search on Google for keywords such as [my photos] or [my photos sunset] to bring up matching photos. You can even search for your friend’s photos such as [danny’s photos sunset] or [matt’s photos of food].

Note, Google explains that they use “computer vision and machine learning to help recognize more general concepts in your photos such as sunsets, food and flowers.” So this appears like it will get better over time, as it is used more and more by searchers.

Here is an example of Danny Sullivan’s sunset photos:

How to search your google photos on android

There’s an annoying thing that happens if you use Google Photos on non-Pixel phones. You have to give the app permission to delete photos every single time you do it. Thankfully, you can put a stop to this.

Why Does This Happen?

Android 11 introduced a major revamp to how apps can access your device’s storage. Previously, the storage permission gave apps access to basically all of your files. The new feature—called “Scoped Storage”—divides up what apps can access.

Scoped Storage divides files into two buckets: “Media” (images, audio, and videos) and “Downloads” (PDFs, documents, etc). You’re not giving an app all-or-nothing access to all your files anymore.

Apps get permission to access only the types of files relevant to them. However, gallery apps that aren’t pre-installed have to constantly ask for your permission to modify files. That’s why this problem is only present in Google Photos on non-Pixel devices.

How to Give Google Photos Permission to Delete Photos

With Android 11, you needed to run some commands in ADB to fix this annoying issue. Thankfully, it’s much easier to do with Android 12 devices. We’ll be demonstrating on a Samsung Galaxy phone, but it works on other Android devices as well.

First, swipe down once or twice—depending on your device—and tap the gear icon to open the Settings.

It’s as simple as that. Next time you want to delete a photo with Google Photos it will simply do it without asking permission first. This also applies to photo edits that appear “out of sync.” Hopefully, this makes using one of Google’s best apps a little better.

How to search your google photos on android

Google offers two different apps you can use to upload and share photos: Google Drive and Google Photos. That seems like one too many—at least, it did to me. But after looking into it, it turns out these services are pretty different.

Google Drive is a file storage service. You can manually upload photos and videos to it, sort them using folders, and share those folders. There are no photography-specific features, and everything you upload counts against your Google storage limits.

Google Photos is a photo and video syncing and backup service. You can sync photos and videos from your phone and/or computer, view them in a timeline organized by date, sort them into albums, and even search the photos themselves. You can also do some basic photo editing. Compressed photos and videos don’t count against your Google storage limits, but uncompressed ones do.

Those are the basics, but there’s a bit more to it than that. So let’s take a closer look at the difference between Google Photos and Google Drive.

Looking for a cloud storage service? Check out our list of the best free cloud storage and file syncing apps.

Google Drive can store photos, but that’s about it

Google Drive is a cloud storage service, meaning you can upload any kind of file to it. That includes photos and videos. You can upload any photo, or even a folder full of photos, to Google Drive using the Upload button, or by simply dragging the files to your Google Drive window.

Photos look like any other file in your Google Drive: you can organize them in folders and share those folders, as usual. Open any photo in Google Drive, and you’ll see a few options—but not many.

You can open images in third-party apps and edit them there, but there’s no built-in way to edit images. There are sharing and commenting features, however, meaning you can do some collaboration. It’s a great way to quickly share folders full of photos with coworkers or anyone else you know who uses Google Drive.

Google Drive integrates with Zapier, which means you can do things like automatically save photo attachments you receive in Gmail to Google Drive or get new Slack notifications whenever someone adds a photo to your Google Drive. Learn more about how Zapier works.

Google Photos is built around your photo collection

Google Photos is all about organizing a massive photo collection. Install the Google Photos app on your phone, and every image you take will be uploaded to the Google cloud. There’s also the Backup and Sync app, which automatically backs up photos from your computer and even any camera you attach to it.

You can browse your photos at photos.google.com or on the Google Photos app on your phone. Images are sorted by date, meaning you can scroll through the years.

You can also sort photos into albums, if you want, and share those albums with other Google Photos users.

One Google Photos feature I really love is the AI-driven search. You can type pretty much anything and get accurate results. Here’s what happens when I search stairs .

There’s also facial recognition, for humans and dogs alike. You can use this to search for holiday pictures of your favorite dog.

Or your favorite dog wearing hats.

Or maybe you want to see photos of your favorite dog during a particular season.

Google Photos also offers some very basic photo editing: you can apply filters, adjust levels, rotate, and crop your images.

It’s not going to replace Photoshop, granted, but it’s great for quick touches on your personal photo collection.

And that’s what Google Photos is for: organizing your personal photo collection without a lot of effort on your part. It’s easy to upload your photos, browse them, and search for the exact photo you’re thinking of. It solves the problem of ever-growing, impossible-to-organize photo collections.

Google Photos offers free (compressed) storage

Your Google account probably has a storage limit—you can check your current usage here. This is worth doing when considering Google Photos, because photos and videos uploaded to Google Drive count against your Google storage limits. Google Photos offers free storage, as long as you’re willing to compress your files.

Google Photos offers two upload options: Original quality and High quality. Media uploaded using the Original quality option count against your Google storage, same as any other file. Images and videos uploaded to Google Photos using the High quality option don’t count—they’re free. The catch: images are compressed to 15 megapixels and videos are compressed to 1080p. That’s not terrible quality: you won’t notice the resolution change on your phone, and Google claims you can print High quality photos up to 24×16 inches. But you might notice the difference on a large 4K TV or if you try to print the image on a poster, so keep that in mind.

How to move photos from Google Drive to Google Photos

Want to move some folders from Google Drive over to Google Photos? The simplest thing is to download the images, then upload them to Google Photos.

Step 1: Select the files you want to transfer in Google Drive, click the three dots in the top menu bar, then click Download.

The files will be bundled in a ZIP folder, which you can open on your computer.

Step 2: Open Google Photos, and drag the folder there. Your photos will automatically upload.

Step 3. Be sure to delete the files from Google Drive when you’re done or they’ll be taking up space in both services.

How to move photos from Google Photos to Google Drive

Again, the simplest thing is to download the photos from Google Photos and manually upload them to Google Drive.

Step 1: Select the photos you want to download, click the three dots in the top-right toolbar, then click Download.

The images will download in a ZIP folder, which you can open on your computer.

Step 2: Head to Google Drive and create a folder for the images (assuming you want a dedicated folder).

Step 3: Drag the photos from your computer to the Google Drive window.

Step 4: Delete the photos from Google Photos, assuming you don’t want them in both places.

Should I use Google Photos or Google Drive?

Not sure which app to use? Both work great, but in my opinion, they have specific uses:

Google Drive is for quickly sharing a folder of photos, particularly in a work context.

Google Photos is for backing up and searching a growing photo collection, and it’s probably most useful for personal use.

There are exceptions, of course—there always are—but that’s a good start.

If you use Google apps for everything, you’ll save a lot of time by automating them. Here are some ways to power up your Google apps with automation.

How to search your google photos on android

It’s almost here. On Tuesday, June 1—the day after Memorial Day—all your new Google Photos uploads will count against Google’s Data Cap. That excludes Pixel owners, but the rest of us only have a few days left. As we mentioned earlier, if you have photos that you’d like to add to Google Photos without it counting against the storage limit, now is the time to act.

Why would you want to do this? Because you get a free backup of your photos in print quality (assuming they were in the first place), and having all your pictures stashed in Google’s cloud makes it easier to share photos with others.

Here’s how to upload all your pictures to Google Photos before the new data cap hits.

Upload from your Android phone

Back up & sync options in Google Photos.

Many people have this enabled already, but in case you haven’t, the easiest way to get any pictures off your phone is to enable Backup & Sync.

Start by opening Google Photos on your phone, and then tap your profile icon in the upper right corner.

Next, select Settings > Back up & sync, then and make sure that the slider for Back up & sync is enabled as pictured here.

Next, look at the section on the same screen entitled Upload size and make sure it says High quality (slightly reduced quality). If it does you’re good to go.

If it doesn’t, tap the menu item, and then select High quality from the options on the next screen. That’s it!

Upload from a PC

If you have a bunch of photos that you want to upload to Google Photos from your PC, doing so is also a fairly easy process. First, open your browser of choice and head to Google Photos on the web at photos.google.com. If you’re not signed in to your account then you’ll need to do so.

Now, it’s just a simple case of clicking the upload icon (the upward facing arrow above a horizontal bracket) in the upper right corner of the Google Photos web app. Then select Computer from the menu that appears.

The problem here is that you can only upload photos from a single folder at a time. If you only have one folder’s worth of images that’s easy enough. If you have multiple folders with hundreds of photos it’ll be a serious pain, but fear not—we have a remedy for that in the next section.

To continue with a simple one folder solution, select the folder you want to upload images from, then hold down CTRL on your keyboard while selecting all the photos you want to move to Google’s servers. (If you want all of the photos, you can just press CTRL + A to select everything in the folder.) Now click Open.

Next, Google will ask if you want to store them in Original or High quality. Select the latter, since High quality images don’t count against your Google storage cap (until June 1). Press Continue.

After the photos are uploaded you can add them to an album or just leave them as loose photos in your collection. You may also need to check the metadata for each photo you’ve just upload to make sure that details such as the date are correct. That way, they will be collected together if you ever search by year. You can also add a location to your images for similar search capabilities. One thing you can’t do, however, is change the file name once it’s uploaded.

If you only have a few photos that you want to add you can also just drag and drop them right into the web app.

Backup & sync

For major upload jobs with hundreds of photos, you’ll need Google’s Backup & sync desktop utility. Once it’s installed, open the app, click Get started, and sign in to your Google account.

Now select Back up photos and videos and select Next. Then you’ll get to the crucial page where you can select folders to upload. By default, Google Photos wants to upload your entire pictures folder, and note that the High quality option is selected by default.

Be sure to pick High quality to stay under the cap.

If that suits you then just click Start and you’re off to the races. Otherwise, click Choose Folder in that top box to select more locations for your photos. You can only select one folder at a time, but they will all get uploaded once you’re done.

After that, Google’s Backup and Sync service will upload all your selected photos in High quality. How long it takes depends on the number of photos you have and the speed of your Internet connection, of course. If you’re uploading a lot of pictures to squeeze them in before Google’s data cap hits, it’s probably a good idea to let your PC run overnight. Once the upload is done, however, you can keep these photos in Google’s cloud without impacting your storage cap that comes into effect on June 1.

‘Twas a few weeks before the New Year and all through the land,

people were looking back at the time that had spanned.

They looked at photos and videos that they hold dear,

from this week, last month and year after year.

With Google Photos, built just for you,

your memories can come back to life anew.

So here is a list of five ways to look back,

from your home screen, a smart display — or all in the app.

1. With the Google Photos Memories widget on Android and iOS, you can see your Memories right on your phone’s home screen, so you can relive moments as you use your phone throughout the day. And this week we’re rolling out a new People & Pets widget on Android: Pick your closest friends, family and four-legged furballs and get photos of them on your homescreen. Tap on the widget, and it’ll take you into the Photos app to view more photos and videos.

2. We’re also rolling out an update to Cinematic photos, which were first launched a year ago. These fun creations use machine learning to produce a video of the moment in 3D, so you can experience your photos in a more vivid way. Now we’re improving Cinematic photos to make them come to life in a new way. Machine learning fills in parts of the background behind the subject, allowing the virtual camera to move more freely as it finds the best framing to bring attention to your subject — sort of like a movie director for your photos.

3. The Memories carousel at the top of your photo grid makes it really easy to jump in and reminisce right when you open the app, but you can also see more Memories in chronological context as you scroll through your grid with best of month, trip and event Memories. With event Memories — which began rolling out last week — you can look back on moments like New Year’s Eve, Halloween, birthdays, graduations and more. Because everyone has their own special traditions and preferences, you can rename or remove these Memories from your photo grid.

4. In addition to viewing your Memories in the Google Photos app on your phone or tablet, you can also enjoy them on your Nest Hub. Just head to the “Your day” tab and let the good times roll.

5. And while the holidays and approaching new year can be a nostalgic time, we know not all memories are worth revisiting. As a reminder, you can always use the existing Google Photos controls to hide photos of certain people, pets or time periods so you can relive the moments you want to.

Google Photos is testing a new feature that should make finding images and videos easier. While searching for images of a specific person within Google Photos, users will be able to refine the search by choosing whether to show results including: favorites, videos, selfies, collages, animations, movies, creations, screenshots, archived, and motion photos.

As Android Police reports, the new Google filtering feature seems to be in testing, as it is not possible to see the filtering option from any device. The filters also appear to not be specific to a particular version of Google Photos, suggesting that it may be being tested on the server-side with some accounts.

As Android Police points out, you could always filter search results when performing a search of a person on Google Photos by typing out the query within the Google Photos search box. For example: “Selfies of David Garcia” would present the same results as searching for “David Garcia” and then filtering out selfies.

I am new to Android. I have been using Windows Phone for the last seven years, and while I love it, it’s dead. Needlessto say I am very used to how the Photos app on WP works. To me it was very logical: all the photos in the Pictures folder could be viewed from the app by going to the folders tab.

With Google Photos, I can’t seem to view anything that was not taken by the camera. I can’t add the old Pictures folder to Google Photos (I am using the microSD card from my Windows Phone in the Android phone). I even moved some of the folders with pictures into the DCIM folder, but they still do not show up.

I also turned off syncing with the Google Photos cloud service because I have the phone uploading everything to OneDrive.

So how do I get the app to display all the photos I have on the microSD?

Welcome to Android Central! The main Google Photos feed will show you all photos in the local Camera folder as well as any photo that was backed up/synced to your Google Photos in the cloud. Other photos in other folders won’t show up if they’re not synced to your Google Photos cloud. To do that, open the Photos app, tap Menu>Device Folders, and look for the folder that has the images you want to sync/backup to Google Photos in the cloud. Tap the cloud icon at the lower right of that folder, and those items will then sync to your Google Photos cloud, and therefore show up in the main feed.

The Google Photos app is understandably not everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you’re used to the traditional AOSP basic gallery app format. If you want to try a 3rd party gallery, give Focus a try. It’s from a well-known and trusted ROM developer, so you don’t have to worry about any sneaky hidden stuff like ads or unwanted features (which many 3rd party gallery apps throw in there).

How to re-enable quick access to Google Photos in Google Drive

How to re-enable quick access to Google Photos in Google Drive

If you’ve noticed the Google Photos link missing from Drive, Jack Wallen shows you how easy it is to get it back.

Head over to your Google Drive account. See anything missing? You should. Recently, Google removed the quick access button to Google Photos from Drive. For some this isn’t a problem. For those that consider themselves power users, it could add an extra step into your workflow. If that quick access to Google Photos was something you used daily, as did I, you’re probably wishing to get it back.

Fret not, intrepid Google Drive users, getting that quick access to Google Photos is possible. With this back into place, you won’t have to constantly be heading over to photos.google.com to work with images on your Google cloud.

Now, before you do this, I want to point out something. The access you gain to Google Photos from within Google Drive does not nearly give you the same power offered within photos.google.com. From within Google Drive, you can view, download, delete, share, tag, and rename your photos, and not much else. Within the actual Google Photos site, you can do all of that, plus use the Assistant, create albums, and do minor edits to images such as rotate, add filters, and crop.

Of course, for users like myself, the options offered in Google Photos aren’t enough to pull me away from my regular editing tools (such as The GIMP). To that end, I only need quick access to my photos, hence the need to restore the link into Google Drive.

How is that done? Let me show you.

Restoring the link

Believe it or not, restoring the Google Photos link is quite easy. Open Google Drive, click on the gear icon, and click Settings (Figure A).

Figure A

From within the Settings window, check the box for Create a Google Photos folder (Figure B). Once you’ve taken care of that, click DONE.

Figure B

With this finished, head back to Google Drive and you should see the quick access link to Google Photos back in your left navigation (Figure C).

Figure C

Congratulations, you no longer have to fret that Google took away the Photos link from Drive. Although not a deal breaker, for me having this link makes my work flow quite a bit easier. When you constantly go between Docs and Photos, it just makes sense to have that quick access link.

  • Google reverse image search allows you to search with an image rather than written keywords.
  • When you reverse image search, Google finds websites, images, and information related to your photo.
  • You can conduct a Google reverse image search on iPhone or Android with the Chrome mobile app, or on any computer.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Google Images is a great place to search for pictures and photos by typing in relevant keywords. But you can also search Google using an image — called a reverse image search — to find out more information about a specific photo or graphic.

Quick tip: Though Google Images is free and easy to use, you can also try other reverse image search tools with more advanced capabilities, like TinEye.

Here’s why you might want to use it and how to Google reverse image search on a desktop web browser or the Google Chrome mobile app on your iPhone or Android.

What is a reverse image search?

When you do a reverse image search on Google, you place a photo, or a link to a photo, in the search bar instead of a text query. Google then finds websites featuring your image as well as related images.

Google Images also detects the subject of your photo and brings up other websites related to your image topic.

When to use Google reverse image search

It’s most helpful to search with an image on Google in the following cases:

  • Find information about a photo. A reverse image search could bring up a website that includes a person’s name or information about a product.
  • Uncover plagiarism. A reverse image search will bring up similar images. This can reveal whether an image was copied from someone else’s work.
  • Find other similar images. If you want to find other photos connected to a specific image, a reverse search will also populate related pictures.

Google reverse image search on iPhone or Android

First, you’ll need to download the Google Chrome mobile app to do a reverse image search on your mobile device.

Then, you can reverse image search on iPhone or Android using a photo from the internet or a photo from your camera roll. Here’s how to do it.

To reverse search using an image from the internet

1. Open images.google.com on the Chrome app on your iPhone or Android.

2. Describe the image you want to search. For example, you could type “tuxedo cat.”

3. Tap the search icon. Chrome will give you images that match your search terms.

4. Select an image from the search results by tapping it to enlarge it. Hold your finger on the image until a menu pops up.

5. Choose “Search Google for This Image” in the pop-up menu to find similar images and related pages.

6. The search results will default to images only. Tap the categories above your search to see all sites, videos, or news related to your search term.

To reverse search using an image from your files:

1. Open images.google.com on the Chrome app.

2. Tap the icon of three horizontal dots in the bottom-right corner.

3. In the pop-up menu, scroll down and select “Request Desktop Site.”

4. Now the Google Images page will look as it does on a desktop browser. In the Google search bar, tap the camera icon.

5. Select “Upload an image” and tap “Choose File.” Alternatively, you can choose to “Paste image URL.”

6. In the “Choose File” drop-down, you can select “Photo Library,” “Take Photo or Video,” or “Browse.” Select “Photo Library” to choose an image from your camera roll.

7. Select an image from your camera roll and tap “Choose” in the bottom-right corner.

8. You’ll then be taken to a page containing similar images or information about the image.

Google reverse image search on a computer

You can do a more robust Google reverse image search on your computer by uploading a file from your computer or searching for an image you find on the web. Google Images works with Chrome, Firefox, and Safari browsers.

To reverse search using an image from your files

1. Open images.google.com in a web browser — it doesn’t have to be in Chrome.

2. Click the camera icon to start a reverse image search.

3. Select the “Upload an image” tab, then select “Choose File” to browse your files and pick an image to search. Or drag and drop an image file into the browser window.

4. Find an image from your files, click it, then select “Open.”

5. You’ll then be taken to a page containing similar images or information about the image.

To reverse search using an image from the internet

1. Find the image you want in Google and right-click on it.

2. Choose “Copy image address” in the pop-up.

3. Open images.google.com in a web browser.

4. Click the camera icon to start a reverse image search.

5. Select the “Paste image URL” tab and paste the URL.

6. Click on the “Search by image” button, and you’ll be taken to a page of results related to your image.

It’s also possible to Google reverse image search on your computer in two more ways.

You can use the “Upload an image” tab to drag and drop an image into the search box. Or, on the Google Images search results page, right-click on an image and choose “Search Google for image.” This will open a new tab with the search results.

You may already know how to do it on a computer, but it turns out that it’s easy to do on your Android phone as well.

Here’s how to do it.

2. Tap and hold the image until a pop-up menu appears.

3. Tap “Search Google for this image.”

4. After a moment, you’ll see the search results for this image.

How to reverse image search on Android, if the image is already on your phone

1. Start the Chrome app and go to images.google.com.

2. Tap the three dots at the top right of the screen in the menu and tap “Desktop site.”

3. After the desktop version of the page loads, you’ll see the search box now has an icon of a camera in it. Tap that button.

4. In the Search by image box, tap “Upload an image” and then tap “Choose File.” Find the file on your phone and upload it.

After a moment, you’ll see the search results for this image.

    Q. On Android, how do I add caption information to individual pictures I have stored online in a Google Photos album? The text edit tool in the Google Photos Help guide seems to just add a caption on the whole album.

    A. You can add a personal caption to individual images in the Google Photos album by tapping the thumbnail of each picture to open it to the full-screen view. When the picture expands, tap the Info button at the bottom; the icon looks like an “i” in a small circle.

When you are on the picture’s Info screen, you should see an “Add a description” line at the top. Tap it to type in your caption information. Tap the Back button when you’re done.

You — and others looking at the album online — can see the caption by going to the Info screen, but the information is not embedded in the image file and does not travel along if you share a copy of the picture by email. But you will not see the “Add a description” field on photos that are stored locally on your Android device and have not been uploaded to a Google Photos album.

A photo’s Info screen also displays other details about the file, like the time and place it was taken, where it is stored locally and the exposure, lens and camera type used to take it. If you have the location services feature enabled on your device, you’ll see the geographic coordinates and a map showing where the picture was taken.

You can add descriptions to pictures in an online album the same way using a web browser — just select an image and hit the Info button. The captions you add will appear in small type at the bottom of the photo as you click through a desktop slide show.

After shipping a redesign of Google Photos and adding a neat new Map View feature for exploring photos, Google has made another change to manage the volume of photos and videos the app is handling during the Social Distancing Era.

According to a post in its support forum, Google has turned off backup and sync on device folders for social media and messaging apps in the Android version of the app. So by default, it won’t sync media from Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and essentially any other folder outside of your regular camera. Here’s how to flip it and reverse.

    Step 1: Open Google Photos

While Google Photos has a fine desktop site, you’ll need to adjust the settings in the mobile app. So, go ahead and open it.

    • Play Store Link: Google Photos (free)

By now, you should have the version 5 update that gives Google Photos a new logo and user interface. However, we’ve found that the facelift does not necessarily arrive immediately upon update, even if you have the new logo. Either way, you’ll start on the Photos tab.

    Step 2: Locate Device Folders

In the new interface, tap on Library in the bottom navigation bar. You’ll see Device Folders in the middle. You can scroll left to right to locate a specific folder or tap “View All” to see the folders in a grid.

With the old setup, tap on the hamburger icon in the top left to access the menu. Then, tap on “Device Folders.”

How to search your google photos on android

    Step 3: Select a Folder

With the new change, you’ll find that many of the folders that you had previously designated for backup are now not. The change impacts messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik, but we’ve seen that some social media apps, like Instagram and Snapchat, are impacted as well.

Folders that are not backed up to Google Photos are designated with a broken cloud icon in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail, while folders with backup permission have no icon. Tap on a non-backed up folder.

Step 4: Toggle Backup & Sync

Once you’re in the folder, you’ll see a slider at the top for backup and sync. Tap it to restore backup permissions. Go back and repeat for other folders.

If you don’t want to upload everything from the selected folder, leave the slider alone and proceed to the next step.

Step 5: Backup Individual Photos or Video (Optional)

If you don’t want to backup everything from these disabled apps, select the photos you do want to backup, then tap the three dots icon in the top right corner and select “Back up now.”

Or, you can open individual files, then swipe up to find the “Back up now” option.

    Alternate Method: App Settings

There’s another way that takes a few more taps, but might be quicker when dealing with a large volume of apps and/or folders.

From any screen in the app, tap your profile photo, then “Photos settings.” In Settings, select “Back up & sync.”

How to search your google photos on android How to search your google photos on android

On the next page, tap “Back up device folders.” Here, you’ll find a list of all of your folders, with sliders next to them. If they are blue, they are backed up. Tap the grey ones to turn on sync.

This is likely a short-term issue due to COVID-19, particularly as many are returning to remote work environments due to spikes in positive tests. Nonetheless, if you collect a lot of media from apps on your smartphone and want them stored in the cloud, you’ll want to check to see if your favorite apps are impacted. • 2. You might like

It’s nice to have the option of keeping private and personal photos away from your general photo library, and now you can, even if you don’t own a Pixel phone.

Google Photos is a handy app if you’re looking to back up a few of your photos and earlier in the year it introduced this Locked Folder feature just for Pixel phones.

Thankfully, the company has now moved on and started rolling out this feature to more Android devices. An iOS version will be arriving later in the year.

Judging from our screenshots though, it seems that the company has kept its promise in terms of Android. This was taken using a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, and as you can see you now have the option of setting up a Locked Folder, so you can keep personal photos away from prying eyes.

The Locked Folder also won’t appear anywhere in your Photos grid or in your search, so you shouldn’t have to worry about anyone accidentally stumbling across the album itself.

How to search your google photos on android

If you’re interested in setting up your own Locked Folder on your Android, you can check out how just below. Keep in mind, Google is claiming that Apple users will be able to use this feature too, it’s just not available at the time of writing this article.

Scan faces, search for words and more

With Google behind their very own Google Photos app, you have access to a number of powerful photo search tools that many people aren’t aware of. Let’s take a look at what tools are available.

From searching text in photos to searching by face and location, Google Photos does an excellent job at gathering information from your photos so that you can find them through search.

How to search your google photos on android

Once you know how to use Google Photos’ search tools, it will be very easy to find any photo saved to the cloud so long as you have a tiny bit of information about what you’re looking for.

Basic Search Tools in Google Photos

Let’s first look at the main search tools that Google Photos provides. Firstly, if you take a photo from your phone and upload it, the photo will have its location data tied to it, which means it is very easy to search for a location and have photos from that location show up.

How to search your google photos on android

You can search for countries, cities, and even specific places of business found on Google Maps. If you want to find photos from a specific day out, this can be the best way to do it. If you upload photos without location tags, you can also edit it to add the location manually.

How to search your google photos on android

If you start to upload more photos with the same person, they will appear in a bubble when you tap or click on the search bar. As you take more photos with more people, you’ll be able to find photos that they’re in by tapping their face. You can also assign names to faces so that you can just search for their name and Google Photos will return relevant results.

You can also search specific photo types. For example, type selfie to bring up results of any photos taken from your front facing camera that include your face. You can also type screenshot to see any screenshots you’ve taken of your phone.

Another feature built into Google Photos is the ability to search by time. Simply typing a date will return results of photos on that date. If you know the general time a photo was taken, but not the specific date, you can search by month and even by season. For example, typing “May 2018” will return results of all photos taken during the month of May, 2018.

How to search your google photos on android

Google also has date based sorting, which allows you to scroll through a timeline to find photos. You can quickly see what time your photos were uploaded on the left side. Finally, you can also search by file type. If you regularly upload files via your PC, this can be a useful way to sort by different types of file, for example, .png, .gif, and .jpeg.

If you still can’t find a specific photo after considering location, faces, date, or photo type, you can also use Google’s AI powered search tools. I’ll explain more about this below.

Advanced AI Based Search Features in Google Photos

Google Photos can also gather a lot of information about the photos you save and upload to help with your search. Google Photos is constantly learning more over time, so the functionality explained below is only going to get better.

How to search your google photos on android

Essentially, Google’s goal is for you to be able to search anything and have relevant photos appear. As an example, searching for a specific food, like pizza, will return photos of pizza.

Google Photos is very smart at distinguishing what details are in a photo. Typing ‘car’ will return results of cars. Typing beach will return photos of beaches. You can even search colors and return results that feature that specific color.

How to search your google photos on android

Taking it further, if you have pictures of screenshots, signs, or documents, you can even search for specific words within the photo and Google Photos will be able to find it. This doesn’t always work. For example, if the text is too distorted or shown at an angle. In most cases, it works perfectly, and it is expected that functionality like this one will become more powerful over time.

How to search your google photos on android

You can take all of these search features and combine them for even more specific results. For example, if you visited a country and want to find something specific, typing the country, followed by an object, color, or person, can return relevant results.

If you have thousands of photos and need to find something specific, combining search parameters can be the easiest way to find a photo.

    Summary

Now that you know about these search tools, you’ll be able to hunt down any old photos easily. All you need is the smallest piece of information about a photo and Google Photos will show it in search results.

Sometimes, Google Photos may not pick up on specific details, so if you’re trying to find a photo, try different methods of search until Google Photos finally finds a matching parameter.

If you have any questions about Google Photos or how to use it to its best potential, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

How to search your google photos on android

In recent years, Google Photos has evolved like no other. It has everything a user could possibly need from a photo storage app which is why it has become a preferred gallery alternative for many. But what happens when some of your photos go missing? If you’ve been scratching your head while looking for photos from the last vacation, this guide is for you. Today, we’ll be sharing a few troubleshooting tips that’ll help you fix Google Photos not showing all photos issues on both Android and iPhone. So, let’s start.

    1. Check Internet Connection

Since Google Photos requires a working internet connection in order to download media from the cloud, you’ll need to start by checking the internet on your phone. For that, you can try running a quick speed test on your Android or iPhone.

If the internet seems fine, move on to other solutions on this list.

    2. Enable Backup and Sync

Next, you’ll need to verify that you’ve allowed the Google Photos app to backup and sync data. The feature allows the app to automatically sync photos and videos with your account and make them available across all the devices.

    1. Launch the Google Photos app on your phone. Tap on your profile picture in the top right corner and select Photo settings.

How to search your google photos on android

    2. Go to Back up and Sync and make sure it is enabled.

How to search your google photos on android

Once enabled, restart the app and see if you can find all your photos.

    3. Check Relevant App Permission

Another reason why Google Photos might not show you all your photos is if it doesn’t have all the necessary permissions. Here’s how to allow them.

    Android

    1. Open up the Settings app on your phone. Go to Apps and notifications > Photos.

How to search your google photos on android

    2. On the app info page, tap on Permissions. Make sure that the app is allowed with every permission it needs.

How to search your google photos on android

    1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to tap on Google Photos.

    2. Now allow all the permissions by enabling their respective toggles.

How to search your google photos on android

After that, restart the app to see if your missing photos are back.

    4. Check Other Folders

Google Photos app is designed to offer suggestion cards that let you archive or delete unimportant photos with a single tap. Apart from this, it also has a locked folder feature where you can store your private photos. So, if you can’t find your missing photos here, chances are, your missing photos are somewhere in those folders.

In the Photos app, switch to the Library tab and go through the Archive and Bin folder to see if you can find your missing photos here.

How to search your google photos on android

Likewise, to access the locked folder, Go to Library > Utilities > Locked Folder.

How to search your google photos on android

If your missing Google Photos images aren’t here, continue with this troubleshooting guide.

    5. Clear App Cache (Android)

Clearing cache is a tried and tested solution for any app on Android that struggles to function properly. And Google Photos is no exception to this rule.

    1. Launch the Settings app and navigate to Apps and notifications > Photos.

    2. Go to Storage and cache and then tap on the Clear cache button.

How to search your google photos on android

Restart the Photos app and see if it loads your missing photos now.

    6. Reinstall the App

It’s possible that the data associated with the app has become inaccessible or corrupted. So, if clearing the cache doesn’t make any difference, then you can try uninstalling the app and installing the Google Photos app again.

    7. Try Web Version

If you still can’t seem to locate your missing photos despite your best efforts, then you can try checking the web version. To do so, open up your preferred web browser on your PC and navigate to Google Photos. Go through all the folders and see if you can find your missing photos here.

If you still can’t find all your photos, then it’s likely that those photos aren’t backed up yet or have been deleted.

    Get Them Back

Being able to seamlessly access and share your photos and videos from different devices brings a lot of comfort to the table. We hope that the above solutions have helped you fix Google Photos not showing all photos issues for good.

    How does Google Photos work?

If you haven’t paid attention to the prompts Google Photos displays when you install it on a new device, or haven’t checked the app’s settings, you may have even missed this distinction between quality options for your uploads.

So, with this in mind, we decided to test just how high quality the “High quality” setting is, and what happens when you upload really big files and RAW images on Google Photos.

First thing’s first, let’s see what Google has to say about both quality settings:

    High quality:
*these are the new terms active from June 1st, 2021

What happens to smaller images (under 16 MP)?

As you can see, the photo itself has not been reduced in size, but the file size has been crunched down from over 16 MB, all the way down to almost a megabyte! And seemingly at no cost at all! It’s almost like magic, but it just comes down to Google’s clever image compression algorithms. The source file was as large as it was, because the shot was taken using Samsung’s “Selective Focus” feature, which is ideal for close-ups such as this one. Google Photos was able to reduce the file’s size so much, because a large portion of the image is out of focus, which allows for a lot more compression to be done in the areas that are lacking in detail.

How to search your google photos on android

How to search your google photos on android

It just boggles the mind how the file size of the image can be reduced so much without any noticeable loss of detail, even when examining parts of it up close.

How to search your google photos on android

How to search your google photos on android

Let’s give it another try, again from the S8:

Interestingly, in this particular case, although the photo was the same resolution as before, Google Photos decided to not only reduce the size of the file, but scale down the image as well. After the compression, we are left with an image with a resolution of 2268 x 3024, which is roughly equivalent to 7 MP, down from the original 12 MP. Ouch . It doesn’t look bad or anything, but this seemingly per-photo type of compression may not be to the liking of some people out there ( I can vouch for this ). We tried running this particular image through Google Photos twice and the results were identical both times.

What happens to images larger than 16 MP?

This time around, the photo was scaled down to 16MP, but as far as compression goes, the size of the file was not reduced as drastically as before. Apart from the image itself becoming smaller after in the end, it exhibits no discernible loss of detail due to compression.

Let’s see what happens to another shot from P10’s capable monochrome camera:

Same story, photo was resized to fit 16 MP limit, still looks good. However, when dealing with larger than 16 MP images, Google Photos seemingly also changes their aspect ratio ever so slightly. For example, the photo above was originally shot in a standard aspect ratio of 4:3 (or 1.33:1), but after the compression, we ended up with an image that’s slightly wider and has a non-standard aspect ratio. It is barely noticeable, but it’s something that happens.

    What happens to RAW photos?

But let’s consider one more scenario that may concern some of you out there – what happens to RAW files when you use the “High quality” setting?

While the image size limitations are still in force when dealing with RAW images, even if they are smaller than 16 MP, they’ll still get compressed and converted to regular JPEGs, meaning that all that sensor image data goes down the drain. If your phone is capable of it, or if you shoot RAW on your dedicated camera, we’d advise against relying on the “High quality” setting for storing your photos.

Is Google Photos free? Is free good enough?

Bottom line is, if you’re short on space and are mainly storing photos that you took with your phone, you are mostly A-OK to use the “High quality” setting. You will never, ever , examine any of your photos so up close as to tell the difference between the original and compressed versions. However, as we saw in one of the examples, Google Photos sometimes scales down even images that fit within the limitations of the “High quality” tier. Although it did this to only one of the images, it’s still something to keep in mind.

Further, since most smartphone cameras have 12 MP or 16 MP sensors, the limitations of Google’s free unlimited storage do not seem all that imposing. However, if you own a smartphone with a 20+ MP sensor, or are using the platform to store images from your dedicated camera, you may want to think twice before relying on “High quality,” and opt for “Original” instead. This applies full force if you’re storing RAW image files.

During the years of Google Photos, new search features has been introduced to easily locate the photos. As per tipster Jane Wong, Google is currently working to upgrade its search tools.

For now, the users can check the library for unique items such as images of pets, vehicles, people, locations, and many more. Google photos will use AI and categorize them so that it will be easy for people to locate them whenever they want without any effort. One can search several items in the search bar like images captured in Toronto, but the results will get complicated as long as the searched item is complex. This latest Google Photos feature would greatly enhance the app’s search functions.

Wong posted a screenshot on Twitter that displays the latest search feature of Google photos and how it works. This feature will allow users to search for several filters in one go. By applying multiple filters at the same time, it will much easier to find the searched photo.

The new app feature is likely still in development, but it appears to be nearing completion, so it can be expected that it will be included in a potential Google Photos update.

Google Photos has always been number one app when it comes to photo management. Google Photos include archives, map search, memories, and album. All these features allow users to compile photos according to their own choice. The photo management app also enable users to create collages, GIFs, and movies for the sake of memories. It is compatible with Android devices and provides limitless cloud storage for images and videos, but this might upgrade and new changes will be made. iOS users can also avail this app, all they need is a Google account to sign in and get the app.

The team behind Google Photos is working hard to launch a couple of new features for the users. Recently, a number of features has been introduced into the app including Video editor. The image editor feature is also updated for enhanced functionality. Changes were seen on the tablet version of the app as well. No other photos managing app can surpass the top rated Google photo app.

Search giant Google is in the process of rolling out a huge makeover for its famed cloud storage app ‘Google Photos’. The update is focused on bringing useful functions front and center, to be easily accessible. One such function is the Map view, which is now accessible right from the Google Photos app itself.

However, if you are having problems with the new Map view feature of Google Photos, this article is for you.

    • What is Map view in Google Photos
    • Why can’t I see the interactive map on my Google Photos app
    • Why are some photos appearing on the map but not others?
    • Why are some photos in wrong locations?
    • How to enable Geo tagging for photos

What is Map view in Google Photos

How to search your google photos on android

Map view is a new function introduced in the redesign of the Google Photos app. The new feature groups your images that have the same Geo tag and adds them to an interactive map. You can zip around the world to view your photos from different locations.

The new map view feature is an update to an already existing feature that Google Photos had, that could list your images by their location. Now you can view the photos and the places they were taken in at the same time!

Why can’t I see the interactive map on my Google Photos app

Google has just announced the major update, and it seems to be rolling out in phases. According to their press release, the update will be rolling out in the coming week. So hopefully we should see it soon. Unless you have the latest update of the Google Photos app installed, you won’t have the interactive map feature yet.

So keep an eye out on your App Store for an update to the app. If you don’t have the app, you can simply download it using the link below.

Download Google Photos: Android | iOS

Why are some photos appearing on the map but not others?

Google Photos uses the Geo tag that is attached to your photos when they are taken. If you do not allow your photos to add a location to their metadata (either from your camera or Google Photos), then Google has no idea where they could have been taken.

Any photos that have a Geo tag location will show up on the interactive map.

Why are some photos in wrong locations?

If you did not have Geo tagging enabled, Google might try to estimate where the photo was taken. There are different ways this could happen; check-ins, upload location, location from other Google apps. If this is the case, Google Photos may pin your photo to a wrong location on the map.

Check to make sure that you have Location History enabled on your Google account.

How to enable Geo tagging for photos

The easiest way to make sure your Photos contain location data is from your camera app. The setting will vary from phone to phone, but you should be able to find it quite easily.

To enable location tagging, launch your camera app, and go to Settings. Under settings search for ‘Geo tags’, ‘Location tags’, ‘GPS tag’, etc. Toggle this setting on.
