  2. Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Health Details, then tap Edit.
  4. Add your information, like height, weight, and age.

  6. You can also set up your Medical ID or register to be an organ donor from your profile.

Your Apple Watch uses your personal information to calculate how many calories you burn and more. You can choose to share this information with other apps and it’s kept up to date across all your devices.

The Health app, loaded onto all iPhones with iOS 8 and sitting prominently on the home screen, is clearly ambitious, but at the moment the majority of it’s intended abilities remain inactive or useless (at least without additional third party sensors, which don’t seem to exist yet). But for those with a new iPhone, the Health app can be useful right now, because it has the ability to track your steps like a pedometer, as well as flights of stairs climbed, and your walking / running distance.

To track some of your activity, you’ll need to enable the functions and then add them to your Health app dashboard. This is all done through the Health app itself, but again, it requires a newer iPhone, as older models do not have a motion tracking chip used to function as a pedometer, or the ability to detect elevation.

For best results with this Health app feature, you’ll need an newer model iPhone, anything newer than iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus is ideal, though iPhone 5S also has a motion coprocessor. Third party devices can also work, but we’re focusing on iPhone here.

  1. Open Health app and go to the “Health Data” tab
  2. Tap on “Fitness” and enable the three currently functional sections:
    • Select “Walking + Running Distance” and flip the switch for “Show On Dashboard” to the ON position

    • Go to “Flights Climbed” and flip the same “Show On Dashboard” to ON

The steps feature is quite accurate as long as you have the iPhone with you – whether it’s in your pocket, in hand, or a pack seems to work and register as expected, and the mileage walking + running distance indicator is also apparently accurate enough from testing experience. The Flights Climbed function works well too, and is fairly interesting in that it uses the new air pressure sensor built into iPhones to detect even minor changes in altitude. Separately, if you take a moment to poke around in Health app, it will demonstrate how ambitious Apple is with the app, either on future intentions of what various iOS devices will be able to do, or what they expect to surface from third parties. With the potential ability to track a huge variety of health and fitness statistics, from body measurements, to fitness, nutrition, sleep, vitals, lab results, and much more, the future looks pretty interesting, though at the moment Health app feels very half-baked due to it’s limited functionality and the apparently missing data input sources.

If you don’t want to use Health app and have no intention on tracking your fitness or activity levels, you’re left to basically ignore the app. Much like other default apps, you can not delete the Health app from the iPhone, though you could choose to hide it either by stuffing it within a folder or using Restrictions to make the icon disappear from the home screen.

Finally, it’s well worth mentioning that using these Health tracking features have showed no notable impact on battery performance, which is great news for those concerned about battery life in iOS 8. Of course, the iPhone 6 Plus has great battery life to begin with, so even if a tiny effect was there, it would likely be minimal and go unnoticed, and reports suggest the same for iPhone 6.

Once you’ve tapped on your device, you’ll see all of the health activity that you device has tracked: Walking + Running Distance, Flights Climbed, Steps, and Headphone Audio Levels. Tap on any of them to view your data, which is broken up by date and time. Even if you walked to the bathroom with your phone, it will appear in this list. If you tap on any of your recorded data, you’ll get more details about your activity, such as start time, end time, source, device, and more.

Deleting Recorded Data

Viewing your data is important, but it’s also crucial to be able to remove any data that you don’t need. For example, if someone else has your phone, and climbs some stairs or goes for a long walk, the data collected isn’t useful to you, so you can easily delete it.

In the All Recorded Data page, for whatever activity, tap on “Edit” in the top-right, then on red circle next to the data you want to delete, and finally on the word “Delete.” The data will be removed from your device and will no longer exist in the Health app.

You can also tap on “Delete All” in the top-right after tapping on “Edit” if you want to remove all of the data for that activity.

Removing Old or Unused Devices

As mentioned in the first section, a list of all your Apple devices will appear in your Health settings. If you have a ton of devices, it’s best to clear the devices you no longer use or own from your settings. In the Data Access & Devices page, tap on the device you want to remove. Then simply tap on “Delete All Data from. ” and “Delete” to remove the device from your Health settings.

I’m not sure, as I don’t connect it to twitter or facebook as I don’t want people to see how many miles I’ve welled a day. I already tweet too much by my self alone with out any external apps. lol!

Tracking your walking couldn’t be easier. The most popular way to track your walking is through a tracking app on your smartphone. They can record your distance, the amount of steps taken and even your elevation whilst walking. You can also use a pedometer or wrist fitness band, which tracks your steps and most will work out the distance walked as well.

Don’t worry if you don’t want to use a walking app or pedometer, jotting down your miles on paper will work just fine if you prefer.

Smart Phone Apps

You can use apps such as MapMyWalk, OS Maps or Strava to track your walking activity on your smartphone. Download an app, turn your GPS on and get walking. It will do the recording for you.

Using a Pedometer

Some pedometer brands like Fitbit will provide step counts and distance walked on the pedometer but they also give you lots more stats on their smartphone/tablet apps.

If your pedometer doesn’t show you the distance you’ve walked, it is handy to know that the average person takes between 2,000 and 2,500 walking steps per mile. Roughly, the taller you are the fewer steps you’ll take.

If you find that your pedometer is showing you’ve gone further than you have, you may have to adjust the settings as your stride length isn’t correct on it. If you have a Fitbit, you can go to their online section for additional help.

How do you know how far you have walked? There are several ways to measure your walking distance, more so than ever before thanks to mobile apps, GPS, and computer mapping. The best one to use will depend on whether you are walking outdoors or indoors as well as your budget and the information you’re collecting such as distance, pace, calories burned, and so on.

Measuring walking distance can be helpful for a number of reasons. You might be training for an event or race, following a workout or training plan that requires specific distances, or you simply want to log your distance and pace and compare your progress over time. Learn about the pros and cons of different technologies that can measure walking distance to determine which one is right for you.

Mobile Phone GPS Apps

In the ancient past (as in, just a few years ago) you needed a special GPS unit to measure walking distance via satellite technology. But now GPS is built into your smartphone and is used by walking apps that can track your speed and distance, such as MapMyWalk.

Mobile Apps Pros

These apps couldn't be more convenient since it's likely you'll bring your phone along with you on your walk. Besides knowing how far you've walked, you can also see the route you've taken, which can help you navigate back to where you started.

Many smart pedometers and fitness bands, such as Fitbit, are linked to apps that have an exercise-tracking function that will use the phone’s GPS to map and measure your walk. In addition to measuring total distance, you often can review your route on a map, and some apps allow you to save and use the same route again.

Mobile Apps Cons

The accuracy of GPS distance measurement depends on several factors. Phone GPS measurements tend to be off by as much as 10%. This is because your phone must have frequent communication with multiple GPS satellites.

If your phone doesn't have a clear view of the sky, it won't be locking position with as many satellites. If your phone loses contact with one or more satellites, you can see a sudden jump in distance. If you look at your route as plotted on a map, you can see this "GPS jitter" and the errors it introduces.

If you are walking in an area with many tall buildings, in a deep valley, or next to a hill, you may see more GPS inaccuracy and loss of signal. Plus, GPS is often lost and doesn’t work well indoors. It won’t measure your distance on the treadmill because your position isn’t changing.

For better distance accuracy, you can walk the same route several times and compare the distance each time.

GPS Watches

More and more smartwatches and fitness bands are incorporating GPS for distance and speed readings, such as the Apple Watch and the Fitbit Sense and Versa. These allow you to leave your smartphone behind during your walking workout and still get GPS speed and distance measurements.

Garmin, TomTom, and others make GPS watches for runners and cyclists that also work for walkers. These often display both your speed and distance and may link with heart rate monitor straps or have LED pulse detection built-in.

GPS Watch Pros

These are easy to wear, provide a lot of data and information. They may be more convenient for checking on the fly compared to your mobile phone app.

GPS Watch Cons

GPS smartwatches are generally expensive and are also subject to GPS failures, which means they may not always provide the most accurate measure of your walking distance.

GPS watches have the same drawbacks as your mobile phone GPS for losing contact with the satellites and not working indoors.

Online Maps

Using MapMyWalk online, you can create and measure a walking route. The website allows you to draw the routes and get a distance reading. MapMyWalk has both street view and a satellite view. You can zoom in on portions of the route that use a sidewalk or path that isn't along a street. With a premium subscription, you can print out maps and directions and export them to your phone app to use while walking.

Other online map services include Mapometer, a map-based route planner that calculates the distance and elevation of your walks, tracks your progress, and monitors the calories you burn.
