You’ve likely heard of (and perhaps even using) WhatsApp, a popular messaging app that allows you to you easily communicate with people. It’s a free app that works in a similar way to Instant Messenger. You can chat with friends, clients, business partners – and even create ‘groups’ so you can message multiple people at once. All you need is a mobile device or tablet with an internet connection and you’re golden!
With mobile tech, we have so many tools readily available at our fingertips to connect with people all over the world.
Even though you may use WhatsApp all the time, you may not be aware that you can create something called a WhatsApp Broadcast. And before we begin, this does not have to be a message sent to all of your contacts that starts of with, “If you don’t pass this on it will bring you 7 years bad luck” ?
WhatsApp Broadcasts are lists of recipients you can send regular (broadcast) messages to. While this may seem similar to a WhatsApp Group, the major difference is that people cannot see other people in the same Broadcast List (making it far more private and secure).
With 1 billion people around the world using the messenger app every day, with 55 Billion messages sent daily, there is a huge demographic that can be marketed to. Utilising the platform now, especially with WhatsApp Business on its way (we’ll report more on this when it lands), is a fantastic idea for any school marketing team.
It is time to incorporate WhatsApp, as another far-reaching platform, into your own marketing strategies; making great use of this 1-1 communication to create a more personalised user experience.
How can we use WhatsApp Broadcast in schools?
It is highly likely that this messaging tool is used by parents, so why not utilise this and create a list of the pupils’ parents – sorted perhaps by year group – and send important updates to everyone at once? This can be anything from reminders about homework; unexpected closures or snow days; upcoming events like school fetes or concerts, and where you can buy tickets; school news filtered by year group and relevance; and many, many other things. Whatever you decide to broadcast, you are always ensuring that the communication between school and parents is seamless, and delivered quickly and effectively.
Since broadcast messages act a bit like a BCC (blind carbon copy) on an email, you can safely choose which group of contacts to send a message to and not worry about other members of that group seeing someone else’s contact information. These details are not shared.
FYI: Only contacts that have your phone number in their address book will receive your message, so it may be worth including that in your newsletter to ensure no-one misses out!
Using WhatsApp Broadcast for pupils
You can help keep pupils on track and/or informed using WhatsApp Broadcast in a similar way. Create Broadcast Lists for each year group, or sporting team, or extra-curricular club, or any other area that could benefit from this.
Upcoming exam information? Perfect, send out info as a WhatsApp Broadcast!
Latest school sports team result just come in? Get it sent out to pupils!
Your boarding houses are arranging a water balloon fight in the next 30 mins? Sounds like a job for WhatsApp Broadcast – no needs to miss out!
Technology has an important part to play in schools, and we see the #FutureSchool as a reality that is already happening. We should never be scared to try new things – we just have to consider always the value behind it. Technology is an incredible tool in aiding and promoting a child’s development, and right now this is how children communicate and retain the most information. Perhaps then, it is time to meet them halfway and communicate in an easy and more efficient way?
This option can be particularly helpful for A-level students who may need a bit more prompting in regards to research/motivation, resources and videos can be shared alongside additional support is there to better understand a given subject.

Check here the step-by-step guide for the users to create a broadcast list on WhatsApp.
How to create a broadcast list on WhatsApp: Android
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Then tap on More options on the right corner.
- Now tap on New broadcast.
- Search for or select the contacts you want to add.
- Finally, tap on the checkmark.
Following these steps will help you create a new broadcast list. When you send a message to the broadcast list, it’ll be sent to all recipients in the list who have your number saved in their phones’ address book. Recipients will receive the message as a normal message.
Note: Only contacts who have added you to their phone’s address book will receive your broadcast message. If your contact is not receiving your broadcast messages, check to make sure they’ve added you to their address book. Broadcast Lists are a one-to-many communication. If you want your recipients to participate in a group conversation, you should create a group chat instead.
Let’s say you want to send out a message to all of your friends. Normally, you’d have to put all of the recipients into one giant group thread to do this. But when people started responding to your message, everyone in the group would get a notification, so your friends would probably be annoyed that you started the group thread in the first place. Luckily, if you’re using WhatsApp, this isn’t an issue.
WhatsApp’s Broadcast feature lets you send messages out to multiple people without having to create a group chat in the first place. It’s somewhat similar to using your email’s BCC, and it’s available for both Android and iOS, so everyone can try it. We’ve outlined the process below, so if you want to know more about this nifty feature, just keep on reading.

Upon doing so, you’ll be taken to either your list of “Contacts” (Android), or “Broadcast Lists” (iOS). Hit “New List” on the bottom if you’re on an iPhone if you’re starting a new broadcast.
Inside the contact list, select which people you want to include in your broadcast by simply tapping on their names to add them. Once you’ve sent your broadcast message, each recipient will see the message as if it were a direct message from you. In other words, the message will come through in your one-on-one thread with each of the recipients. When they respond, it will come through this same individual thread that only you and that person can see, so everyone else you broadcasted to doesn’t have to hear all of the crosstalk.

A broadcast refers to sending a signal or message from a single source to multiple destinations at an instant of time.
For WhatsApp broadcast, when a WhatsApp user sends a message to its multiple recipients in one click this is called a WhatsApp broadcast message. No recipients will be able to see the other recipients of the broadcast.
Either you use the WhatsApp messaging App or WhatsApp Business App, you can initiate a WhatsApp broadcast just by clicking on the three dots on the upper right three-dots menu on the main ‘CHATS’ window.
It’s very easy to build a WhatsApp broadcast list on WhatsApp Business App to send the desired messages to your audience. But as the folks say ‘Greate Power Comes With Some Sacrifices’, there are some limitations to this type of broadcast on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is the new age method of easy and quick communication. WhatsApp is being used in hundreds of countries and by speakers of thousands of languages. The mobile app is easy to use and provides a host of useful features like Last Seen, use on PC, chat emoticons, read receipts etc. One such feature is WhatsApp Broadcast. This feature allows you to send a WhatsApp message to all your contacts.
I have been getting such messages on WhatsApp which seem to be one-made-for-all types. I knew that there must be a broadcast or bulk message feature in WhatsApp but I never bothered myself to look for it —well, after all, even without such explorations we waste a lot of time on WhatsApp anyway!
But yesterday when someone in office asked me if it was possible to send a WhatsApp message to multiple contacts, I decided to look into the matter. And I didn’t need to look too deep! WhatsApp Broadcast is very intuitive feature. Let’s learn how it works.
With WhatsApp, you can send message to all or multiple contacts in one go.
OK, first of all, let me clarify, that you can not send a WhatsApp message to all in one go. There is a limitation on WhatsApp Broadcast, it allows broadcast only to those people who have your phone number saved in their phonebook. This has been done to ensure that this feature is not used for spamming.
In order to send a WhatsApp message to multiple contacts, take the following steps:
- Open WhatsApp
- Tap the Menu Button to open the main menu
- Select New Broadcast
- Tap on the plus sign (+) to select contacts whom you want to send the bulk message
- Tap on Done
- Tap on Create
Now WhatsApp will open the message screen with all the selected contacts added as the recipients. Type the message and send it. Easy!
This broadcast list will be saved like any other chat conversation. You can open this list and send more messages in future.
Here is a YouTube video that demonstrate the above steps:
If you need to remove or add contacts in an already created broadcast list, you can do so.
- Open the broadcast list
- Tap on Menu Button
- Select Broadcast list info
- To remove a recipient from the list, tap and hold on their name. You will be given to Remove participant from broadcast list
- Tap on Add recipient… button in order to add more contacts in the list
Yes, it’s a good question. If you have used groups on WhatsApp, you may ask how WhatsApp Broadcast is different from WhatsApp Group! Well, the difference lies in anonymity. In WhatsApp Group, all the members know who are the other members of the group. Therefore, every group members know who all would receive a group message.
On the other hand, recipient list in WhatsApp Broadcast remains private. Recipients don’t come to know who else has received the message. Each list member receives your message as though it was sent only to him.
In email analogy, WhatsApp Group is like using CC (carbon copy) option. Whereas, WhatsApp Broadcast is like using BCC (blind carbon copy).
Go on! Open your WhatsApp and send your first broadcast message to all your friends! Should you have any question in this regard, please feel free to ask me through comments section. I will be happy to try and assist you. Thank you for using TechWelkin!
MEP allows you to associate a blacklist with a broadcast. When the message is sent, the blacklist is checked for any phone number that should not receive the message. Before creating your SMS broadcast, you should first determine whether or not a blacklist is going to be used. If so, you must first ensure that the blacklist is created and that it is associated with a virtual gateway account. See
for information about virtual gateway accounts and how to create one. for the steps to create a blacklist and associate it with a virtual gateway account.
To create and send an SMS broadcast:
Click the Broadcasts tab.
The Broadcasts home page appears, showing a history of broadcasts associated with your account. Click an existing broadcast to view and download results.

The lower half lets you select the end users to which you are broadcasting. Under this is an Advanced Settings section, which contains additional settings you may wish to use. The page will look similar to this:
On the top half of this page:
- By default, the Broadcast name field is populated with SMS Broadcast. You can optionally change the name, which is not visible to end users. This can help you find it at a later date if needed. If you do not specify a name, a default name is used.

Choose the SMS Account through which you wish to send the messages. Depending on your account, you may also be able to change the message originator.

- CSV — character encoding can be windows-1252 or ASCII, but not UTF-8

- You can spread the broadcast over a period of time. This is an especially useful feature if you are sending a call-to-action message that will direct end users to your business or call center.
- If your message is time-sensitive, you can set an expiry date after which delayed messages are no longer delivered.
If your broadcast message includes variables, then you may wish to preview the messages before they are sent. Previewing lets you see the exact message text that will appear for each of your end users. For some users, previewing may be mandatory. Previewing is available for SMS broadcasts only.
To preview messages, select the Preview the broadcast before sending check box before sending or scheduling the broadcast.
The Broadcast Preview pop-up will appear once you click Preview and Send or Preview and Schedule. From here you can scroll through each message, or search for specific phone numbers to check.
The Broadcast is only sent (or scheduled) once you have clicked Send or Schedule at the bottom of this pop-up.
Note: The Broadcast Preview pop-up box will also tell you if any of the recipients are in a blacklist (in which case, the message will not be sent to them). This message only appears if the broadcast is sent through a virtual SMS account with a configured blacklist.

Why is WhatsApp broadcast list not showing? Here is everything you need to understand why are broadcast messages not delivered to many people and how to fix it.
WhatsApp is amongst the most used app in India when it comes to chatting and connecting with friends and loved ones through online messages. This free social media messenger app is not only used to chat with friends and family but it also allows its users to upload stories, videos, share multimedia, Apk files, documents, voice notes, video call and more. The lockdown in India has led to an increase in the number of people using smartphones, apps and more especially to chat and share information. As people have a lot of alone time they try creating incredible content and share it with their friends on groups and broadcast messages. However, recently many people are asking questions on why is WhatsApp broadcast list not showing. If you are facing the same problem and you are unable to send texts to people on your broadcast list, here is all you need.
Why is WhatsApp broadcast list not showing?
It is amongst the major problems faced by many individuals after they have updated their WhatsApp or bought a new smartphone device. WhatsApp does not allow recipients of a WhatsApp broadcast channel to receive messages if the sender's number is not saved by the individual. This means only contacts who have saved the sender's or the host of the broadcast channel's number to their phone's address book will receive the shared broadcast message. If one of the recipients is not receiving broadcast messages, make sure they have added your number to their address book.
Broadcast Lists are one-to-many communication mode where only a single person can text many people at once where the other person can only text to the sender. The problems such as "WhatsApp broadcast message not delivered," "WhatsApp broadcast list not showing," and more occur only if the user has not saved the number of the person sending them a broadcast message. Once the number is saved, the user is automatically subscribed to receive broadcast messages from the sender.
A WhatsApp Broadcast Message is similar to a blind carbon copy (BCC) in email. You can use it on occasions that don’t exactly warrant a group and don’t require communication within a WhatsApp group. The message will reach all recipients as if you had sent it to them individually, thus concealing the identities of the other contacts involved. We explain how to send a broadcast message on WhatsApp.
How to broadcast a Message on WhatsApp
Broadcast Messages on WhatsApp are great for informing a large group of colleagues of important business news, or announcing that you are moving to a select group of friends that will reply with their availability. Or perhaps you are advertising your new services to existing clients via WhatsApp, which would be rather awkward in a group conversation.
So instead of copying and pasting the same text over and over, you can write it once and broadcast a message on WhatsApp to a predefined “WhatsApp Broadcast List”.
Requirements for WhatsApp Broadcast Messages
All of the contacts involved need to be using WhatsApp, of course. But it is just as important that they are in possession of your phone number and that it is stored in their address book (or “Contacts” app). This is for the sole reason of protecting WhatsApp users from spam, otherwise advertisers could just bombard you with messages all day.
How to create a Broadcast List on WhatsApp
Open “WhatsApp” and tap the “Chats” tab and go to “Broadcast Lists” in the top left corner of the screen. Tap “New List” to create a new Broadcast List.
Add new contacts to the list by either typing the first couple of letters of their name, or scrolling through the contact list and placing a check mark next to a certain contact. Finally tap “Create” and you are done. WhatsApp will take you to a regular chat screen. Send a Broadcast Message to try out your newly created list.

How to view, edit and delete WhatsApp Broadcast Lists

To edit an existing Broadcast List, tap the blue “i” symbol next to it. You can then add a name to your list or add and remove recipients. Tap the “Edit list…” button to edit the membership status of contacts on your list.
