How to start a bmw

How to start a bmw

If the battery on the BMW 325i is discharged to the point that it can no longer generate sufficient power to start the car, you can use another car to jump-start the dead battery. Once the 325i is running, the alternator will recharge the battery. As long as the battery is not damaged, allowing the car to run for several minutes should be sufficient to recharge the battery.

Step 1

Position the car you will use to jump-start the dead battery close enough to the BMW 325i to allow the jumper cables to reach both batteries. Ensure that the two vehicles do not come in contact with each other.

Step 2

Turn off the engine of the support vehicle.

Step 3

Open both vehicles’ hoods.

Step 4

Lay out the jumper cables so the two clamps on each end of the jumper cables are not touching.

Step 5

Remove the cover of the BMW’s auxiliary jump-starting terminal. The terminal is located on the passenger side of the car, near the firewall. The cover is marked with a “+.”

Step 6

Connect one positive jumper cable clamp to the positive terminal on the support vehicle’s battery.

Step 7

Connect the other positive jumper cable clamp to the BMW’s auxiliary jump-starting terminal. If you cannot locate this terminal, attach the clamp to the positive terminal of the BMW’s discharged battery.

Step 8

Attach one negative clamp to a suitable ground point on the support vehicle. This can be any location that is connected to the vehicle’s frame. Most vehicle’s are equipped with a special jumper cable ground attachment point. If you can’t locate a suitable connection point, connect the negative clamp to the negative terminal of the support vehicle’s battery.

Step 9

Attach the other negative clamp to the grounding nut on the BMW. This is a special feature on the 325i. The nut is located close to the BMW’s auxiliary jump-starting terminal and is attached to the car’s body. If you can’t locate this nut, attach the negative jumper cable clamp directly to the negative terminal on the discharged battery.

Step 10

Start the support vehicle and let it run for several minutes. Lightly press the accelerator to increase the engine idle speed. This will speed the charging process.

Step 11

Start the BMW 325i. If the engine will still not start, wait several more minutes and try again.

Remove the jumper cables from the two batteries in the reverse order of how you attached them.

How to start a bmw

In this guide, you will learn how to jump-start a BMW vehicle with a dead battery.

It is important to follow the proper procedure when jump-starting a BMW.

A BMW is jump-started by connecting to the jump terminals in the engine bay.

Do not connect the jump box or jumper cables directly to the battery.

What you will need

  • 12V Jump Starter
    or
  • Jumper Cables – Requires a running car

Procedure

  1. Remove the metal blade from your BMW key fob.

Watch video on how to connect jumper cables to a BMW.

BMW Won’t Jump Start

If all you hear is a click, check the jump starter clamps are making good contact. Ensure the jump box is fully charged.

The battery in the car may be completely discharged. Keep the jumper cables connected for at least 15 minutes, then try again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to start a bmw

How to get into the trunk, if you have a dead battery

Many BMW owners ask how do I get into the trunk if the battery is dead.

Use the jump-starting terminal under the hood to power up your BMW, then unlock the trunk.

These instructions work on all BMW models, including 1-series, 2-series, 3-series, 5-series, 6-series, 7-series, X1, X5, X6.

BMW battery is dead, and the trunk won’t open.

BMW engineers have made it difficult to get access to the trunk when the battery is dead.

You don’t want and shouldn’t jump-start a BMW directly from the battery.

This is a common mistake many roadside assistance technicians make.

If you read on BMW forums, you will find hundreds of cases where control modules were damaged by improperly jump-starting a BMW this way. Costing car owners thousands of dollars in repair.

How to charge a dead BMW battery

Replacing the battery on a BMW is expensive because not only do you need a new battery, but it also needs to be registered.

The typical cost of a BMW battery replacement range is $400-$500.

Before you spend hundreds on a new battery, we recommended using a trickle battery charger to bring the battery back to life instead of jump-starting the car and letting the alternator charge the battery.

By trickle charging a dead BMW battery, you have a better chance of bringing the battery back to life. Otherwise, your BMW may no longer hold a proper charge.

It will take at least 24 hours to bring a completely dead battery back to life.

You are only providing 2 Amperes to the battery, which is a slow charge but ensures no damage is caused to the battery cells.

Don’t leave the keys in the ignition as your BMW charges.

BMW Battery keeps dying

If your BMW keeps on dying or is not holding a proper charge, it could be due to any of the following:

  • Battery Age / Old Battery
  • Corroded or Loose Battery Connections
  • Parasitic Current Drains in the electrical system.

This video shows you how to jump start a dead battery in your 2008 BMW X3. If you get into your X3, turn the key, and your car doesn’t start (you may hear nothing or a clicking sound from the engine bay), you have a dead battery and need a jump-start. Check to see if you left your headlights or an interior light on and turn the switch off. Assuming that you have a pair of jumper cables, a pair of safety glasses and a friend to give you a jumpstart, the video above will show you where to connect the cables (and in what order!) for your X3. Once you are finished reviving a dead car battery in your X3, make sure you drive it for at least 5 minutes before turning it off so your battery isn’t dead the next time.

So what’s up with the safety glasses? There is a small possibility of a battery exploding during the charging process if you don’t connect the cables properly (causing a spark) and there is a bunch of hydrogen gas around the battery (car batteries emit hydrogen gas when they discharge) – this is much more of an issue with cars that haven’t been driven for a long time than if you drive your X3 regularly and simply forgot to turn your lights off.

It happens to all of us. One day you decide to go for a ride to your local grocery store or a simple spin around the town after some time of not using your BMW (shame on you), and you realize that your central locking doesn’t work, and you can’t even get in the car.

What do you do?

Here I put a simple guide on how to open your BMW 318i and any other series BMW and jump-start it from another car. This will work as well if you have a portable Jump-starter.

So let’s get into it!

How to unlock a BMW with a dead battery

The first thing you need to know is that you won’t be able to unlock your car by pressing buttons on your remote control key fob if the battery is dead. So you have to unlock your BMW with the manual key that is included within your key fob.

To get your key out just pull apart your key fob. Heres some pictures to illustrate this.

And then put your key into your car’s door lock and unlock it

Now as you are in the car, you still won’t be able to open your car’s boot to get to your battery, as it uses battery energy to unlock the boot. But from there you can open the trunk and jump start car.

In case you haven’t jump-started BMW or any other vehicle with the battery locked in the boot from the front, I’ll show you how to do it here.

Frist open the trunk of your BMW 318i.

Once you are under the hoot, locate the positive terminal of your battery under the trunk. It is originally covered with the RED plastic cover that has ‘+’ sign on it. And on the BMW 318i – series it is at the back of the engine and on the left-hand side once you are facing your car from the front.

Once you located your positive battery connection under the hoot, now you can start jump-start procedure.

P.S. you don’t need to connect your negative cable directly to your dead battery negative terminal. You can connect it anywhere on to bare metal under the hoot as I’ll show you next.

Jump-starting your BMW 318i

Get the donor’s car in the front of your BMW’s. That will be the easiest way to jump-start your car.

How to start a bmw

Start with connecting the positive lead of your jump-cables to the donor’s battery positive connection.

Then connect same positive lead of the cable to your dead BMW battery positive connection under the hoot

Then grab your negative ‘-‘ cable and connect it to donor’s negative ‘-‘ connection

And get the same negative cable connected to your BMW’s metal corpus under the hoot so it would have a good ground connection

How to start a bmw

BMW ‘+’ and ‘-‘ connected

When you have your cables attached to both batteries, now you can start your donor car and charge your dead battery for 2 minutes or so. So your BMW would start for sure.

You may want to hold donors engine revs at 2000 RPM or little higher so the dead battery would charge a bit faster.

How to start a bmw

While jump-starting your car both, your BMW, as well as the donor’s car, should be with HAND BRAKES PULLED UP and in PARK gear if it’s AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION and in NEUTRAL if it is MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

If you think that your battery might be on its way, then you might consider getting yourself a portable Jump-starter so that you won’t get stranded in the middle of your journey. It is always a good idea to have one in your car. Don’t keep it in your boot as you won’t be able to open boot if your battery dead.

Here I have a review of two popular Jump-starters that you might be interested.

How to start a bmw

If you are attempting to run errands or head into the office and your vehicle won’t start, you likely need a jump-start, car battery service, or something similar. In most cases, a jump-start is all that is necessary. If you are unsure of how to properly jump-start a car, the service experts at Pacific BMW would be glad to walk you through the process with this handy guide. We want to help you avoid needing to call a jump-start car service. If you realize that it may be time for a new battery, our parts department can help with that, too.

The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

Before you can begin, locate a set of jumper cables. You will also need the assistance of another vehicle. Another option is to call a jump-start car service like AAA. If you have the jumper cables and you have found another driver willing to help, follow the steps listed below:

  1. The vehicle with the functioning battery should be parked facing the vehicle with the dead battery. Make sure that the vehicle is turned off. Engage the parking brake on both vehicles.
  2. Open both hoods to find the batteries. In some cases, there may be a plastic hood covering the battery terminals.
  3. Identify the positive and negative terminals. Ensure the terminals are clean and that there is no corrosion.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoil the battery cable and hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  6. On the working battery, connect the black clamp to the negative post.
  7. The last clamp should be attached to an unpainted metal surface on the car’s frame.
  8. Check that the cables are secure before starting the engine of the vehicle with the good battery. You can then start the car with the dead battery.
  9. Once the process of jump-starting the vehicle with the dead battery is complete, you can remove the jumper cables carefully but be sure to do so in the reverse order that they were placed on. Shut off the car that assisted in the jump-start.
  10. Keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes. This helps to prevent the battery from dying again. It is a good idea to take a look at the owner’s manual for your vehicle. The manufacturer may have other recommendations to follow.

Troubleshooting Tips

What happens if your car won’t jump-start? It could be a sign that the battery needs to be replaced. It may also indicate a more significant issue with the vehicle. There are a few ways you can try to troubleshoot the problem before having your vehicle evaluated by a professional.

  1. If you attempt to start the car, but all that happens is a clicking sound, it could be a sign that the starter is not working correctly. If this is the case, bring it to the Pacific BMW service center, and one of our technicians can replace the starter.
  2. If there is a problem with the ignition switch, battery, starter, or a fuse, you may notice that the electrical systems of the car turn on, but the engine won’t turn over. It is also best to have your car looked at by a professional.
  3. To make sure the battery has time to fully recharge, the vehicle needs to stay running for the proper amount of time after getting the jump.
