While diaries are largely associated with teenage hopes and dreams, they are, in fact, a perfect place for people of all ages to keep personal reflections. As our world becomes more technologically advanced, people have moved from writing by hand to typing, whether it be on computers or on their phones and tablets. It is time our diaries have moved from small notebooks on our bedside tables to accessible, intimate members of the online community. By creating a digital diary, you can bring your words into the 21st century with convenience, accessibility and security.

So, what exactly is a digital diary?

A digital diary is a place where you can record personal events and experiences online. Rather than keeping a traditional diary or notebook to express your thoughts and feelings, you can create a diary and make it available anywhere and everywhere, as long as you have access to the internet.

The lock and key you once had on your teenage diary to keep out the unwanted eyes of your siblings and parents have now been replaced by a login and password. Digital diaries offer the mobility you need and the privacy you want.

You might have heard that keeping a journal is a great way to record your thoughts and understand your emotions. Typical journaling involves only writing—but for those who are more visually inclined, an art journal is a great alternative.

What is an art journal?

An art journal is a visual diary; it combines elements of writing, drawing, painting, collage, and even printmaking to express yourself. This includes your everyday life, as well as your bigger hopes, dreams, and fears. A single page will often fuse words and illustrations to offer a look at what’s going on inside your head.

The focus on self-expression is where an art journal differs from a sketchbook. In a sketchbook, it can have elements of art journaling, particularly when it comes to drawing or painting. But a sketchbook doesn’t have to include imagery that corresponds to your inner thoughts.

Why keep an art journal?

If you are someone who journals, you already understand the benefits of getting your thoughts on paper. Doing so offers a way to de-stress and to sort through complicated emotions. As a result, you gain self-awareness and feel empowered.

Above all, art journaling is a way to practice self care. It encourages you to take a little time for yourself—even if it’s just for 15 minutes a day. When you look back at what you’ve written, drawn, or stamped, you can gain valuable insight into the challenges in your life.

The point of art journaling is not to make every page a masterpiece. You’re simply supposed to enjoy the act of creating something without worrying about who is going to see it—or if it even looks good. Remember, it’s just for you!

How to Start an Art Journal

Art journaling is completely customizable depending on your skills and interests. Many people choose to use mixed media and adorn their pages with drawing and painting materials. The most important thing when beginning your art journal, however, is selecting the right book.

There are many considerations when it comes to picking your journal. Size is one. If you enjoy making large drawings, for instance, then a bigger book might be best. Art journals look great when you fill the page, so whatever the size you choose, make sure it complements the way you like to work. Another characteristic to think about is the type of pages that are in the book. Since it’s a good chance you’ll be using mixed media, select a journal whose paper can handle both drawing and painting—and lots of it.

These supplies are a great for art journaling:

  • Watercolor paints or watercolor pencils
  • Acrylic paint
  • Colored pencils
  • A variety of pens, from fine-tipped to thick brushes
  • White ink
  • Glue sticks (for collage)
  • Old magazines, newspaper, or other interesting papers

What Are Cooking Diaries?

A cooking diary is a blank or guided journal where you can write about your adventures in the kitchen. If you’re a professional chef, you may use one daily to record everything from the dishes you made that day to developments in your professional career. A cooking diary can be used whatever way you want it to be. Ultimately, it will be a record that celebrates all the hard work and creativity that goes into the art of creating great food. The diary should make your life easier and add an extra sense of fun to the time you spend in the kitchen.

9 Ways to Use Your Cooking Diary

Whether you decide to pack your cooking journal with lots of different things or have a single focus for the entire book, your cooking diary is a tool to use in the kitchen. When you write in your diary, think of how useful the content will be in a week or even years down the line. Here are nine ways you may want to use your cooking journal:

Work on Your Own Recipes

Anyone who strives to create their own recipes know that failures happen more often than successes, but they can be part of the fun. It is even a point of pride for some chefs to point out the dozens or even hundreds of attempts they made at perfecting a recipe. You may use your cooking diary to chronicle the original recipe and the date it was created, then also record every change you make. Once you have a recipe exactly like you want it to be, you may want to go through the journal to see where you could have simplified things and came to your conclusions for the perfect dish sooner and apply those lessons to your next experiments.

Save Recipes You Want to Try

A cooking journal is also an ideal place to keep recipes that look appealing to you. Go through old magazines and used cookbooks from thrift stores to look for promising recipes, then cut and paste them into your journal. Use the recipes as inspiration or try them exactly as they were written, then also make notes in your journal about your impressions once you make and taste them.
