  • On the 13 inch macbook – can you pop off the keys individually and put them back on?
Similar to say how you would on a standard keyboard?

I wanted to know if anyone has done this? I thought I read in another post that you couldn’t do this on the Macbook without removing the entire case?

One of my kids spilled some soda on my keyboard and it is sticky. I wanted to know if I could just pop them off and clean it or if they don’t just pop off.

    Has anyone done this?

  • Yes you can pop them off, but be very careful while doing it. Don’t force anything.

I had the “M” key replaced on my MBP (it wasn’t attached properly, and kept coming off on one side) at the Genius Bar. The “genius” gave me an extra “M” key just in case it comes off again. He even showed me how to remove the keys.

    It’s quite simple to do.

  • Here’s what you do–

Use a spudger, and VERY CAREFULLY pry the key cap upwards. Underneath the key, there is a plastic scissor like mechanism that is held in by a small hooklike tab on one side, and a pair of pins on the other. Gently press against the plastic until you loosen one the pins. After that, the key can be easily removed. Once this is done, you will see that the mechanism is held onto the key cap by a set of snaps. Using the pointed end of your spudger you can separate it from the key cap.

After cleaning, open the scissor piece, and attach the HOOK SIDE FIRST, then guide the pins back into position until they pop back into place, and press the key cap straight back down until it snaps back into place.

These are very small and very delicate parts. Do not force anything, and be patient. I just got through cleaning my entire keyboard this way, and the entire procedure took about three hours. Good luck.

Keychain works as an all-encompassing passwords manager on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. It provides a safe place for your credit card information, Wi-Fi logins, and other sensitive data. So why would you want to disable it?

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Perhaps you want to share your Mac with a family member or a friend. With Keychain on, the person gets access to all your accounts. To avoid the issue, you can allow others to log in as guest users. But many prefer to disable Keychain, just to be on the safe side.

Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to completely disable Keychain on your Mac. But, there are some workarounds we’ve come up to help. In this article we’ll review a few methods to securing your passwords and taking control of the keychain.

    Managing Keychain on a Mac

There are several ways to disable Keychain on a Mac. Let’s look at some easy methods:

    How to Delete Keychains

To begin, we’ll show you the closest option to disabling Keychain on your Mac. For this method, we’ll start out by accessing the Utilities folder in your Mac’s Finder.

    1. Open the Utility folder and double-click on ‘Keychain Access.’

A drop-down window appears, asking you what to do with all your passwords. You can permanently delete them, keep them for later use, or cancel if you have second thoughts. This action doesn’t affect the passwords across other Apple devices.

    Use Safari

Launch Safari and go to the Preferences menu, Command + Comma on your keyboard.

Go to File and select “Delete Keychain login.” This action is like the mother of all Keychain switches since it deletes all the passwords, login data, and everything else you have stored in Keychain.

If you want to remove specific information, select Passwords, Secure Notes, or Keys under Category and hit the delete option.

    Disabling Keychain on an iPhone

It’s easy to purge your Mac from all saved passwords, login info, and other sensitive data. What if you want to do the same on your iPhone as well? The same method applies to iPads, but we’re using an iPhone for illustration purposes.

    Step 1

Launch the Settings app and tap the Apple ID menu to access more options. Then select iCloud.

    Step 2

Once inside the iCloud window, swipe down and tap on Keychain to access the toggle button.

Once again, hit the toggle button to disable the feature and you’re good to go. In some cases, you are required to provide an Apple ID password to confirm these actions.

Note: On an iPad, you’ll also be asked to keep or delete information from your iPhone.

Things You Should Know About Keychain Safety

Unlike some third-party solutions, Apple Keychain is a password management tool you can really trust and there are rarely any problems. To keep your data safe, Keychain utilizes a 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard, and you can also get two-factor authentication.

Plus Apple uses end-to-end encryption. This means that the information is protected by a unique device passcode and key, and you are the only person who knows them.

The Key to a Password-Free Mac

We all use a staggering number of passwords and other sensitive data. It’s almost impossible to keep all of it in your mind, and this is where Apple’s Keychain lends a helping hand.

However, there’s a chance that someone might abuse the info to peek into your accounts. Now you know how to prevent that, so you can lend your Mac to a friend without needing to worry.

You may have run into a problem where your MacBook’s built-in keyboard stopped working or you may want to use an USB-connected keyboard instead. Perhaps, you have children with curious fingers or a pet who steps on your laptop. In any of these instances, learning to disable your MacBook’s internal keyboard can be useful.

    Use a Shortcut Key

The first step to disable your keyboard using a shortcut key. Simply press Ctrl + F1 to disable your keyboard controls.

    Use Apple Script

To use apple script, open the Terminal app through the Applications/Utilities folder and disable your keyboard by inserting the following command:

If you want to enable your keyboard, insert the following command instead:

    Use Third Party Apps

A third way to easily disable your MacBook keyboard is to use third party apps. The main software available to disable your MacBook keyboard, like Karabiner, Keyboard Clean Tool, and Lockey.

    Karabiner

Karabiner is a free software that can customize your keyboard. This app can disable and enable your keyboard, but it can also change the key mappings and apply special functions to regular keys. There are several possible modifications that can be made that are all available upon download.

    To disable your keyboard:

    1. Download the Karabiner app and open the download file.
    2. Install Karabiner on your laptop and launch the app.
    3. Enter “disable” in the search box and click on the box that corresponds to the internal keyboard.

    Keyboard Clean Tool and Lockey

Keyboard Clean Tool is another free app that disables your keyboard with a mere click of a button. Additionally, Lockey allows you to disable both your mouse and keyboard to prevent any accidental key strokes or keyboard clicks.

    Conclusion

Disabling your MacBook Pro keyboard has several advantages. Whether you need simply need to replace your built-in keyboard, but do not want to trade in your still functional laptop, or if you just want to preserve the quality of your keyboard, the steps above can easily help you claim some control over your keyboard.

    What to Know

    • Lock a Windows keyboard fast by typing Win+L or CTRL+ALT+Delete.
    • MacBook users can just close the lid or use Control-Shift-Power to lock things up.
    • Third-party options also exist if you don’t care for the manufacturer’s approach.

This article explains how to lock your computer keyboard when you’re not using it, including keyboard shortcuts and third-party apps.

How to Disable a Laptop Keyboard

The easiest way to disable your keyboard is by locking your computer or putting it in sleep mode. On Windows machines, there are several ways to do this.

    • Win+L
    • CTRL+ALT+Delete
    • Start button
    • Close the lid
    • Use a screen saver

The easiest method is the Win+L keyboard shortcut. Any typing that happens after you use this shortcut only serves to wake up the screen. The next easiest is pressing CTRL+ALT+Delete. This shortcut pulls up a menu with a Lock option, as well as sign out, switch account, and task manager.

To lock your computer and save battery life, click the Start button, then the Power symbol, and select Sleep. Press the physical power button to wake it up. You can also enter sleep mode by closing the laptop lid.

Finally, you can use a screen saver and set it up so that when it’s disabled, it brings up the sign-in screen. Open the Control Panel, type screen saver, select change screen saver. Select a screen saver if you’re not already using one, set how much time should elapse before it turns on, and tick the box next to On resume, display logon screen.

Of course, all of these methods require that use you a unique and strong password.

How to Lock a MacBook Keyboard

There are similar options for locking a MacBook. The simplest ones are:

    • Close the lid
    • Use Control-Shift-Power to lock your MacBook
    • Use Command-Option-Power to put your MacBook to sleep
    • Select Sleep option from Apple menu

As on Windows computers, Macs have convenient keyboard shortcuts. You can use the Control-Shift-Power keyboard combo to lock a MacBook or Command-Option-Power to put it MacBook to sleep. Another method is to click the Apple icon on the upper left corner of the screen, then sleep. Closing the lid also puts your MacBook to sleep.

    Lock a Keyboard Using a Third-Party Tool

There are several tools available that enable you to lock your keyboard without locking your machine or disabling the screen. On such option is called Keyboard Locker, which was compiled by How-To Geek staff from an AutoHotKey script. (AutoHotKey is a free scripting tool used for automating tasks in Windows.) After you install Keyboard Locker, you can use CTRL+ALT+L to disable your keyboard; type in the word unlock to re-enable it.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbookHaving your social media accounts impersonated is the last thing you want: your profile information is a goldmine for cyber criminals because it is exactly the kind of data that they are looking for to personalize their phishing scams. For this reason Keychain Access, a security feature of macOS built to streamline the workflow of Mac users, becomes a security threat on shared computers, and as such it is highly recommended that system administrators disable it.

The Role of Keychain Access on a Mac

Keychain Access is the built-in password manager for macOS. It stores passwords and account information, and retrieves it on demand. Keychain Access has a locked, encrypted container called “keychain” where the account names and passwords for apps, servers, and online accounts are stored. The function is also used to store any credit card numbers, bank account PINs, and secure notes that have been used online. Users can turn to Keychain Access to manage certificates issued by trusted organizations to validate websites, documents, or other web-based materials.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

AutoFill is turned on by default in Safari, so every time you visit a website you’ll see a prompt from Keychain Access to save the password to your keychain. If you happen to own multiple Apple devices, iCloud Keychain can be used to keep all your Safari website usernames and passwords, credit card information, and Wi-Fi network information up-to-date across all devices.

    Why Disable Keychain?

Removing the burden of remembering passwords is neat, but not always the best idea on shared Macs simply because other users with access to the same computer can ultimately log into your accounts without your permission.

As a result, it is recommended that users disable Keychain Access to avoid such uncomfortable situations and force users to either remember their own passwords or use a password manager to fill that gap.

In this scenario, a password manager is the best option because this way only the rightful user can access a specific account due to the security measures incorporated in this sort of service. The master password protects all saved passwords for that use and, in theory, that password is only known by the user who created it. Furthermore, password managers don’t lock the user into the Apple ecosystem as is the case with Keychain Access, but instead provide apps for all major platforms, which allows a greater freedom of platform choice.

    How to Disable Keychain

To prevent automatic storage of web-based account logins you can disable the AutoFill feature in Safari as a first step.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

    1. Launch Safari and press the Command + , keys to open the Preferences pane.
    2. Click on the AutoFill tab and uncheck “Using names and passwords”, “Credit cards”, “Using info from my contacts” and “Other forms”.

In Safari 11 Apple also gives you the option to prevent AutoFill in the Passwords tab.

    1. In Safari’s Preferences menu, click on the Passwords tab and authenticate with the user account password to view all saved usernames and passwords.
    2. Uncheck the “AutoFill user names and passwords”.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Repeat these steps with all your web browsers to prevent them from prompting with the option to save usernames and passwords.

    Firefox

    1. Click on the Firefox menu in the toolbar to launch Preferences.
    2. Uncheck the “Remember logins for sites” and “Use a master password”.

    Chrome

    1. Click on the Chrome menu in the toolbar and select Preferences.
    2. Click “Advanced” at the bottom screen.
    3. Under the “Passwords and forms” option, uncheck “Enable Autofill to fill out forms in a single click” and “Offer to save your web passwords”.

Remove All Saved Logins in Keychain Access

You can take a final step to prevent any accidental login by removing the existing “Login” keychain in Keychain Access.

    1. Launch the Keychain Access app.
    2. Select the “login” item located in the “Keychains” section.
    3. From the File menu, select “Delete Keychain ‘login’” or press the Command + Option + Delete keys.

If you’ve got a pet or small child, you know that an unguarded keyboard can spell disaster—or more likely, spell “dhjkhskauhkwuahjsdkja, mnsd”. We’ve got a tool for locking and unlocking your keyboard with a quick keyboard shortcut.

Keyboard Locker is a small program that handles this job well and takes up few system resources. It was originally a small AutoHotKey script written by an AutoHotKey forum-goer named Lexikos. We’ve spruced it up a bit and compiled it so that you don’t need to have AutoHotKey installed. If you do have AutoHotKey installed, we’ve included the original script in the download so that you can tweak it to your liking.

    Download and Run Keyboard Locker

To get started, go ahead and download Keyboard Locker. Unzip the Keyboard Locker folder wherever you want to keep it on your hard drive. and open the Keyboard Locker folder. You’ll see a number of files inside. These include some icon files and a readme, but the important two files are “KeyboardLocker.exe” and “KeyboardLocker.ahk.”

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

If you do not have AutoHotKey installed, you’ll need to double-click “KeyboardLocker.exe” to run it. This file is an AutoHotKey script compiled to run as a standalone program, so that you don’t need AutoHotKey to use it.

If you already use AutoHotKey, you can use the “KeyboardLocker.ahk” file instead to run the script directly. The advantage of using the script version is that, if you’re familiar with AutoHotKey, you can edit the script yourself to change the shortcuts for locking and unlocking your keyboard.

When you launch Keyboard Locker, you’ll see a small keyboard icon appear in your notification area. The tool is now ready for use.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

To lock your keyboard, press Ctrl+Alt+L. The Keyboard Locker icon changes to indicate that the keyboard is locked.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Almost all keyboard input is now disabled, including function keys, Caps Lock, Num Lock, and most special keys on media keyboards. There are a few key combinations that will still work, such as Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Win+L, but those are extremely unlikely for a paw or tiny hand to hit by accident.

When you want re-enable keyboard input, simply type in the word “unlock.” The Keyboard icon changes back to normal again to show that the keyboard is unlocked.

Note: On on some PCs we’ve tested running Windows 10, when you unlock your keyboard while notifications are turned on, it sometimes can take several seconds after typing “unlock” for keyboard functionality to return. It will return, though.

How to Start Keyboard Locker when Windows Starts

It’s easy enough to run Keyboard Locker when you need it, but you can also have it run automatically when Windows starts by adding it to the Windows startup folder. Hit up our guide on how to add programs, files, and folders to system startup in Windows for the full instructions.

In short, though, just store your AutoHotKey folder wherever you want. Open the Run dialog by pressing Windows+R, type “shell:startup,” and then click “OK.”

Create a shortcut to the “KeyboardLocker.exe” or “KeyboardLocker.ahk” file—whichever you use—in the Windows startup folder. You can do this by dragging the file to the startup folder with your right mouse button and choosing “Create shortcut here” or by right-clicking anywhere in the startup folder and choosing New > Shortcut from the context menu. Once the shortcut is in place, Keyboard Locker will run automatically when you start Windows.

Many people need to remove a key to clean either the key itself or underneath the key. Cleaning under a key is often necessary when a drink spilled onto the keyboard, food crumbs are lodged under a key, or when it hasn’t been cleaned.

If you’re trying to remove a key from a laptop keyboard, see: How do I remove and replace a laptop key or keycap?

    How to remove a key

Before removing any of the keyboard keys, unplug the keyboard from the computer or turn off the computer.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

To remove a standard keyboard key, start by pressing down on the key in front of the key you want to remove. Insert a flat object below the key, such as a small flathead screwdriver or a car key, as shown in the picture. Once placed below the key, twist the flat object or push down until the key pops off. If you want to remove more than one key, repeat this process until all keys are removed.

We also suggest not removing the spacebar key unless absolutely necessary, because many keyboards use a retention spring that can be very difficult or impossible to put back into place.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Once the key is removed, you’ll notice the hair, dust, dirt, or food particles under the key if present, as shown in the picture. This substance can be removed with compressed air, a damp cloth, or cotton swabs.

If you’re removing the key because of a substance spill, clean and dry the bottom of the key, the keyboard, and the key shaft.

Once everything is clean, position the key back into the normal position by pressing down on the key until it snaps back into place.

Is it possible to completely disable the built-in keyboard on a MacBook? No input should be possible from that keyboard when I connect an external keyboard. This is sort of possible with the trackpad and the mouse, is there an option (or indeed a hack!) to do the same with the built-in hardware?

From Googling around, I found this page. It suggests that you unload a AppleUSBTCKeyboard.kext to disable keyboard:

This will prompt you for your password and then give some errors, but it does disable the built in keyboard (tested on my ML 10.8.2)

To re-enable the builtin keyboard, load the kext file again:

BTW, I noticed that this immediately prints all that was typed on the builtin keyboard, so be ready for this (in Terminal this should probably just output some text).

For newer versions on MacOS / alternative solution:

    List loaded kexts for keyboard

It’s going to output something like:

    com.apple.driver.AppleHIDKeyboard is loaded kext identifier.

If you want to plug-in Apple Magic Keyboard / some other Bluetooth keyboard, turn it off first. Then follow the instruction below.

I am running an SSIS package which will replace data for a few tables from FlatFiles to existing tables in a database.

My package will truncate the tables and then insert the new data. When I run my SSIS package, I get an exception because of the foreign keys.

Can I disable the constraints, run my import, then re-enable them?

You can now choose to sort by Trending, which boosts votes that have happened recently, helping to surface more up-to-date answers.

Trending is based off of the highest score sort and falls back to it if no posts are trending.

    To disable foreign key constraints:

However, you will not be able to truncate the tables, you will have to delete from them in the right order. If you need to truncate them, you need to drop the constraints entirely, and re-create them. This is simple to do if your foreign key constraints are all simple, single-column constraints, but definitely more complex if there are multiple columns involved.

Here is something you can try. In order to make this a part of your SSIS package you’ll need a place to store the FK definitions while the SSIS package runs (you won’t be able to do this all in one script). So in some utility database, create a table:

Then in your database, you can have a stored procedure that does this:

Now when your SSIS package is finished, it should call a different stored procedure, which does:

If you’re doing all of this just for the sake of being able to truncate instead of delete, I suggest just taking the hit and running a delete. If you use your MacBook as a desktop replacement, the trackpad can get tiresome to use, depending on your type of keyboard and how the MacBook sits on your desk. But for most people, the desire to use a mouse is due to trackpad malfunctions. In any scenario, the trackpad is convenient for when you’re on the road, but use it at home, and a mouse will soon prove its worth. You can set macOS 11 Big Sur to disable the MacBook trackpad when using a mouse automatically. Here’s how.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

You should only need to do this once as we configure Mac OS 11 to disable the trackpad every time it detects a mouse. Once set, the auto-adjustment works the same for both wired and wireless mice. This article also shows you how to reverse it, just in case you prefer working that way.

Disable MacBook Trackpad when Using a Mouse

Until something better comes along, a mouse is the best way to control any computer over the long term. Spend a few hours on your MacBook, and the trackpad can become very tiresome to use. Most of the time, a good Apple mouse is comfortable for more extended periods.

To disable the MacBook trackpad when using a mouse, follow the steps below.

    1. Select the “Apple logo” (Main Menu) in the top left and then click on “System Preferences.”
How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook
    2. Select “Accessibility.”

    3. Click on the “Pointer Control” menu item on the left.

    4. Check the box next to “Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present.”

Now, when you connect a mouse to your MacBook, macOS 11 will automatically disable the trackpad until you remove the mouse. Why this setting isn’t under mouse or trackpad remains unknown, but the procedures required still get the job done.

    Reverse the MacBook Trackpad

Ever since ‘Natural Scrolling’ got introduced in the days of ‘Mountain Lion,’ Mac users have had to reverse the trackpad. Some use both Apple and Windows. Leaving Natural Scrolling enabled means that you have to switch the OS in your brain and scroll in a different direction. Apple-only users may not have an issue, but IT techs and frequent users do.

Fortunately, you can reverse the Mac setting, so it works a little more like Windows and Linux. Here’s how to do it.

    1. Select the “Apple logo” (Main Menu) in the top left and then “System Preferences.”
How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook
    2. Click on “Trackpad.”

    3. Select the “Scroll & Zoom” tab, then uncheck the box next to “Scroll direction: Natural” at the top of the window.
How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Now, when you scroll down on the trackpad, the screen scrolls up. Scroll up on the pad, and the screen scrolls down. Instead of sliding up and down based on the page’s position, you’re sliding the page based on the scroll bar. In other words, you move the screen based on the scroll slider, not the page position. This reversal reflects Windows and Linux movements to help reduce confusion between operating systems. Scroll up; the slider moves up. Scroll down; the slider moves down.

    Enable Mouse Keys

Another macOS feature is called Mouse Keys. The ability to move your cursor with the number pad or keyboard without using the trackpad. This feature is a great backup option if you’re unable to use your trackpad.

    1. Select the “Apple logo” (Main Menu) in the top left and then “System Preferences.”

    2. Select “Accessability.”
    3. Click on “Pointer Control.”
    4. Click on the “Alternate Control Metods” tab, then click the box at the top labeled “Enable Mouse Keys.”
    5. Optional: You can click the “Options” button next to “Enable Mouse Keys” to manage the feature and customize it to meet your needs.
    6. Optional: When completing “Step 5” above, your keyboard may or may not work for text. To quickly turn the function off, press “Option + Command + F5” on the keyboard. You’ll get a screen where you can unclick “Mouse Keys.”

If you need to disable the MacBook trackpad, you now know what to do. Got any other trackpad tips or tricks we should know?

If you find yourself regularly clicking on your Mac computer’s trackpad by accident, with the cursor jumping out of place and windows randomly closing, then you will be happy to know that you can disable the trackpad to avoid these frustrating instances.

And if you use a mouse, there’s really no reason to leave the trackpad on, especially if you use an external keyboard.

Here’s how to turn your trackpad off in both cases.

How to disable the trackpad on your Mac computer

    1. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner and select System Preferences.

    2. Select Accessibility — not the Trackpad option.

    3. Now click on the Mouse & Trackpad option on the left menu. If you have a mouse or wireless trackpad connected, simply check the box on the bottom to disable your trackpad.

    4. If you don’t have a mouse connected, but want to disable the trackpad anyway, check the box to “Enable Mouse Keys” and then click Options. Then check the box to “Ignore built-in trackpad when Mouse Keys is on” and hit OK.

Mouse Keys is a function that lets certain numbers and letters on your keyboard — and the numeric keypad — control the movement of your cursor. If you also check the box to “Press the Option key five times to toggle Mouse Keys” you’ll be able to turn your trackpad on and off by tapping the Option key five times in a row.

I am on a mission to become proficient with keyboard shortcuts, and I keep cheating by accident and using my trackpad. I want to be rigorous in my attempt to learn, so how do you toggle the trackpad on and off?

I found information on how to turn it off if you use a mouse, but that defeats the purpose of what I am trying to do.

In the spirit of learning keyboard shortcuts, if anyone knows how to set a keyboard shortcut to toggle the trackpad, that would be optimal.

To turn off the track pad you’ll need to attach a mouse or wireless trackpad but you don’t need to use it.

To turn off the trackpad when a mouse is connected:

From the  Apple menu go to System Preferences

Select Mouse and Trackpad on the left

Select “Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present”

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Actually, it is possible to disable the trackpad without needing to connect a mouse or wireless trackpad by using the Mouse Keys feature, but this will block your ability to enter text while it’s on. Mouse Keys allows you to use certain keyboard keys to control the movement of the cursor. While this answers your question, it won’t allow you to do what you need.

This can be accessed in System Preferences / Accessibility / Pointer Control (or Mouse & Trackpad on older OSs) / Alternate Control Methods, and then check Enable Mouse Keys after you’ve enabled the 2 checkboxes in the Options window:

    • Press the Option key five times to toggle Mouse Keys
    • Ignore built-in trackpad when Mouse Keys is on

The first setting will allow this key command to turn the feature on/off so you can quickly access the trackpad again when needed.

Do you want to know how to disable the keyboard on your laptop?

That’s great because I have all of the answers for you here.

If you have stumbled onto this page thinking, “why would I want to disable my laptop keyboard?” then I have an interesting story for you.

A friend of mine used to work in a busy office. He used to go out of the office a lot for meetings, so he decided to use a laptop instead of a desktop.

Unfortunately, there were people in the office who didn’t like my friend. So one day when he went to get some lunch, these “geniuses” decided to play a dirty trick on him. Unfortunately, it was a trick that had severe consequences.

They used his laptop to access several “unsavory” websites. Then one of these people spoke to his boss and told her that they had walked past his desk and noticed some very inappropriate material on his laptop.

When my friend returned from lunch, his boss fired him immediately. He did not have the opportunity to explain how it happened. A check of the timings on the logs would have shown that someone else accessed these websites while he was at lunch.

Reasons why you should Disable your Laptop Keyboard

This is a pretty extreme story, but it made me think about the reasons why disabling my laptop keyboard is a good idea:

    • Stop people accessing your laptop in your absence – yes you can use a password but passwords are often easy to crack.
    • Cleaning your laptop keyboard – it is difficult to clean the keyboard of a switched on laptop without pressing down on certain keys and having something crazy happen.
    • Stop your pets from creating mayhem – I have a cat that loves walking on my laptop keyword and even sitting on it. I guess she likes the warmth of the laptop.
    • You want to use an external keyboard – you may have a reason to use an external keyboard with your laptop so disabling the internal keyboard is a good idea. A classic situation is spilling coffee or some sticky beverage onto your keyboard and then finding it doesn’t work anymore.

How You Can Simply Disable Your Laptop Keyboard

OK, so now I’ve convinced you that disabling your laptop keyboard is a good idea let’s see what you need to do:

    Windows Laptops

There are a few ways that you can disable a laptop keyboard on a Windows-based machine. I will explain 2 slightly different ways that you can do this fairly easily. I’ve tried all of these methods on laptops that have Windows 7, 8, and 10, and they all work.

    Remove your Laptop Keyboard

Notice that I said “remove” here and not just disable. This is because you might want to use this method if you have trashed your internal keyboard by spilling something on it and just want to use an external USB keyboard instead.

    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Select Control Panel from the menu
    3. Double click on Device Manager to open it
    1. Right click on My Computer
    2. Click on Manage
    3. Click on Device Manager
    4. Find your keyboard in the list. You should see a list item called Keyboards
    5. Right click on the keyboard device and select Properties from the menu
    6. Click on the Driver Tab
    7. Click the button that says either Disable or Disable Device
    8. Restart your laptop

    No Disable Option

You may find that you do not have an option to disable your keyboard driver in the device manager. Laptops vary, and some will have this option and others won’t. You can use a trick where you install an incompatible driver to disable your keyboard.

    This is the process:

    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Select Control Panel from the menu
    3. Double click on Device Manager to open it
    4. Find your keyboard in the list. You should see a list item called Keyboards
    5. Right click on the keyboard device and select Properties from the menu
    6. Click on the Driver Tab
    7. Click the button that says Update Driver
    8. Don’t let your computer access the Internet for a driver. You want to use existing drivers on your laptop.
    9. Find drivers that are incompatible with your keyboard
    10. Select an incompatible driver
    11. Restart your laptop and you should find your keyboard disabled.

If you just try to uninstall your keyboard driver Windows will find it again when it restarts, so this is not an effective strategy. Instead, if you want to enable your keyboard again, just go through the same process, select the right driver, and restart.

    Disabling a Macbook Internal Keyboard

OK, I get it. Not all of you use Windows laptops and some of you have a Macbook. You may want to disable your internal keyboard for one of the reasons that I stated in the introduction. So I have some solutions for you to do this.

    Use a Keyboard Shortcut

One of the great things about the Macbook is that you can actually temporarily disable the internal keyboard with a nifty keyboard shortcut. It is so simple:

Press the F1 and Ctrl key together and you’ll disable the controls for your keyboard.

Using an Apple Script for Keyboard Disabling

Now please understand that I have not tested this method. Some Macbook users say that this works well and others say that it doesn’t work at all. This solution may not work with all Mac OS versions. If you want to give it a try, then do this:

For disabling the internal keyboard, run this script:

    sudo kextunload
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBTCKeyboard.kext/

If you want to reinstall your internal keyboard:

    sudo kextload
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBTCKeyboard.kext/

Applications to Disable Macbook Internal Keyboard

You can find some third party apps to disable the internal keyboard for your Macbook. The most popular ones are:

The Keyboard Cleaner app is for cleaning your keyboard without having to turn it off. It will disable all keyboard input and will black out your screen. The Karabiner app is pretty popular in the Mac user community and you need to install it first.

    Conclusion

So whether you have a Windows laptop or a Macbook, you now know how to disable the internal keyboard. It’s a bit trickier with a Windows laptop, as you have to go into the device manager and play around with your keyboard drivers.

It can be essential for you to disable your laptop keyboard to keep prying eyes and fingers away. However, going through the keyboard disabling sequence on a Windows laptop just to clean it can be overkill so just turn your laptop off.

If you don’t want a bystander to read what’s on your Mac’s screen or just want to temporarily shut off the display—for instance, to save battery—you can take advantage of several built-in macOS features.

As it turns out, macOS makes your life easier by providing a dedicated keyboard shortcut to quickly turn off Mac’s display without having to define a screen saver or use dedicated third-party applications.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

How to quickly turn off your Mac’s screen

It doesn’t get any easier than this. At any time, press Shift + Control + Eject, or Shift + Control + Power on newer Mac models. Pressing the shortcut will instantly fade to black both the built-in display and any external screens connected to this Mac and shut off their backlighting. If your Mac just locks and shows the password screen, press the Esc key or click Cancel to turn off the screen.

As mentioned, this is a great way to save battery on Mac notebooks without having to set up a blank screen saver, prevent a bystander from seeing what’s on your screen, and other use cases.

Besides the above key combinations, you can also press Control + Command + Q and then hit the Esc button to lock and turn off your Mac’s screen.

If you have a MacBook with Touch ID, pressing Control + Power or Option + Power or Command + Power or Fn + Power keys also seem to lock the Mac, and then you can press Esc or click Cancel to turn off the screen.

Requiring macOS password after display sleep

As a precaution, you may want to make some customizations so that macOS requires your Mac user account’s password after the screen goes blank. Doing that will prevent others from using your computer if you, say, press the key combination to hide what’s on your computer’s screen or leave the machine unattended for a short period of time.

First, launch System Preferences on your Mac and then hit the Security & Privacy preference pane. Now click the lock icon and type in your macOS administrator password to unlock the settings.

Next, click the General tab, tick the box next to “Require password after sleep or screen saver begins,” and then click the pop-up menu and choose an option: Immediately, 5 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, or 8 hours.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

My Mac is set to ask the password 5 seconds after it goes to sleep or the screen saver kicks in. If I accidentally press the keystroke, this lets me quickly resume using the machine without needing to enter the password.

The shorter the password lock, the better

Having macOS require the password a few seconds or minutes after the screen goes to sleep versus 15 minutes or more will drastically shorten the window of opportunity for any possible foul play while your computer is unattended.

In my case, five seconds is an ideal setting. If I shut off my Mac’s screen by intentionally pressing the keystroke, I can press any key within the next five seconds to wake the display from sleep and continue using my Mac immediately.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

But after five seconds have passed, macOS requires me to type in my administrator password to continue using the computer. The best thing about this handy keyboard shortcut is that it doesn’t put your Mac to sleep or log out the current user.

While the display is shut off, the machine continues to function normally as if nothing happened. You’ll still receive emails and notifications and running task won’t pause. I’ve actually completely disabled my screen saver: using this shortcut in conjunction with the password timeout setting described above lets me save power when needed while increasing my privacy—without degrading my user experience.

As commenters have pointed out, you can set up Hot Corners to put the display to sleep rather than start your screen saver, which can be quite useful as well.

We have been asked literally multiple times to explain how to disable a key on the keyboard in the Windows operating system. Why anyone would want to do this is something of a mystery, but for those who want to disable a key on the keyboard in Windows 11, Windows 10, or Windows 7, here is the perfect solution.

There is a provision in Group Policy to turn on or off some popular keys such as the Windows logo key, but other keys on the keyboard can’t be disabled using Group Policy.

While one can manually edit Windows Registry to disable a key, most users prefer to get things done without touching the Registry.

For all those looking for a simple solution to get one or more keys on the keyboard on a PC running Windows 11 or earlier versions, you can use a free tool called Simple Disable Key.

Does your Mac slow to a crawl thanks to apps that spring to life upon startup? Here’s how to disable and manage startup items to stop them in their tracks.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

When your Mac boots up, are you bombarded with a series of programs you didn’t open and don’t regularly use? Startup apps are convenient, but too many can eat up precious memory and slow down your computer. The good news is that you can fight back.

    Disable Startup Apps

The simplest way to disable an app from launching on startup is from the Dock. Right-click on the app and hover over Options in the menu. Apps that are set to open automatically will have a check mark next to Open at Login. Click that option to uncheck it and disable it from opening.

Instead of hunting for each app, though, you can do it all from one place. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items for a list of apps set to launch on startup. To remove a specific app, highlight it and click the minus button under the list.

If you prefer, certain apps can be set to launch at startup without necessarily popping up onto the screen. This ensures the program won’t get in your way but will be ready to use when it’s needed. Just tick the Hide box next to each app listed.

Don’t want to wait but aren’t ready to disable everything yet? You can temporarily disable startup apps. Enter your login information as you normally would, but hold down the Shift key on the keyboard before submitting your credentials. Continue holding until the Dock appears, and the startup apps won’t load that time.

    Remove Launch Daemons and Agents

If you still have certain programs opening when you boot up your Mac, it’s likely due to launch daemons and agents hidden within your libraries. These files are hidden in places you won’t normally look and tell the computer to launch programs independently of regular startup items. They can even be used for nefarious purposes.

You can find them in a number of places. Open your disk drive in Finder—it’s usually named Macintosh HD by default—then open Library and look for folders named LaunchAgents and LaunchDeamons. They may also be separately stored within your computer’s hidden files. Open Finder, click Go, and hold down the the Option key. Select the Library folder that appears and again look for LaunchAgents and LaunchDeamons folders.

Within these folders are .plist files that may be connected to a certain program or service. If you see a file name that matches a program you know continues to launch on startup, you can freely delete it. This will stop the program from telling macOS it needs to be launched. You may also find files matching programs that are no longer installed; these can also be removed.

    Recommended by Our Editors

However, we don’t recommend deleting every .plist file you find en masse. If you don’t know what something is for, search its name online before proceeding. There are also LaunchAgents and LaunchDeamons folders within your Mac’s System folder that you should not mess with because your computer needs them to function properly.

If this all sounds too complicated, don’t worry. Utility programs like CleanMyMac X (Opens in a new window) , MacKeeper (Opens in a new window) , and Nektony’s App Cleaner & Uninstaller (Opens in a new window) can help identify daemons and agents and manage their removal.

    Delay Startup

If you like startup apps but want to avoid having them all open at once, there are tools that will help you delay them at launch. Programs like Delay Start (Opens in a new window) and DelayedLauncher (Opens in a new window) let you set a timer for specific apps to control when they start up. Lingon X (Opens in a new window) can help you open specific apps on a schedule.

Is there a way to temporarily disable public key authentication when ssh’ing, and use password authentication instead?

I currently want to access remote server, but I’m using another laptop, not mine.

    Browsing that link, I found that the command ssh -o PreferredAuthentications=keyboard-interactive -o PubkeyAuthentication=no host1.example.org doesn’t work everywhere. And yes, it doesn’t work for me. I’m using: OpenSSH_5.9p1 Debian-5ubuntu1, OpenSSL 1.0.1 14 Mar 2012

Edit: I also tried to type ssh -o PreferredAuthentications=password -o PubkeyAuthentication=no but still have “Permission denied (publickey)”.

So, is there a specific configuration to do in the remote server, for that command to work? Or, when that command will work as expected?

    Thanks a lot for advices.

This sounds like a configuration issue on the server side.

If the server allows both public key and password authentication then even if you try to connect without a private key file present on the client, it should prompt you for a password.

If you are getting the error message “Permission denied (publickey)” then it sounds like password authentication is not supported on your server.

Without seeing the /etc/sshd_config file, it is difficult to know but my guess would be that you need to make sure the following line exists:

Restart the ssh server, and when you connect from the client you should be prompted for a password if there is no private key present, or if the private key doesn’t match the public key on the server.

A more secure alternative to this of course would be to copy your private key to the laptop which you are using, or in-fact generate a new private key to be used on that laptop and add the public key to .ssh/authorized_keys

For many people who spend a lot of time on their computer, it’s a valuable and precious item which they can’t do without. That’s why it can be a little bit worrying when toddlers or young children get close to your computer, especially when you’re not 100% sure what they’re going to do when they’re near it. Most of them will be quite fascinated and want to play with the keyboard or move the mouse around.

Children and pets are quite good at touching your computer when you don’t really want them to, and when they do, it could cause something untoward to happen. One of the simplest ways of stopping that from happening is to lock down the machine so when a key or mouse button is pressed, nothing happens and your system is safe. Or if you want to play a video on the screen it can’t be interrupted.

Here’s a selection of different ways you can lock the keyboard and mouse from user interaction. These tools are also useful if you want to clean your keyboard and mouse without unplugging them from a computer that is currently being used.

    1. KeyFreeze

KeyFreeze is a very simple tool to use. All you have to do is install it and press the large “Lock Keyboard & Mouse” button. You will then receive a 5 second countdown timer. After the time runs down the window will fade out and then your keyboard and mouse will be locked.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

As it says in the dialog window, to get back to a usable keyboard and mouse simply press the standard Ctrl+Alt+Del combination and then press Escape or click the Cancel button to return to the desktop. KeyFreeze has no options to configure and the only button you can press is to turn the lock on again.

Although it requires installation, the KeyFreeze program itself is only an 85KB executable. It can be found inside a subfolder in “C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0” if you want to make a portable version. The .NET Framework 3.5 needs to be installed for Windows 10 users.

    2. BlueLife KeyFreeze

This tool is different from the one above and is created by utility maker Sordum. It is completely portable and has some useful options to lock the keyboard, the mouse, disable mouse movement, and hide the mouse pointer. Any of the options can be used with each other and are accessible from the main user interface, right click the tray icon > Options to get there.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

The default hotkey for locking and unlocking is Ctrl+Alt+F although this can be changed to another Ctrl+Alt combination if you wish. In addition, unlocking can also be achieved by using Ctrl+Alt+Del which takes you directly to the Windows lock screen. That option can be turned off if you don’t want it.

You can also set up an auto lock when the system has been idle for a period of minutes, quickly lock by double left clicking the tray icon, or right click the tray icon and choose to lock the mouse, the keyboard, or both at once.

    3. Kid Key Lock

This utility can partially or completely disable mouse button and keyboard key functions to lock down things to your liking. For instance, you can lock only system key combinations, lock all keys except characters, space and enter, or everything on the keyboard. For the mouse, you can lock individual buttons, double clicks, and the scroll wheel.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

By default, the middle mouse button, right mouse button, and system key combinations are locked. Open the settings window to change it or add the left mouse button and more keyboard keys (slide the slider to the right). If you’re going to completely lock keyboard and mouse actions and make the program silent (by turning off the password reminder), make sure you know the passwords to show the setup screen or quit the program.

Locks can also be changed via the tray icon context menu. Kid Key Lock has portable or installer versions available.

    4. Toddler Keys

Toddler Keys is quite a feature rich locking program. Not only can it lock the keyboard and restrict mouse usage but it can also stop CD-ROM trays from opening and disable the Power button (Windows XP only). Locking both keyboard and mouse together will show a black screen that cannot be escaped from until the passphrase is typed.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

Another interesting feature is you can add pictures and audio files via a media manager and every time a key is pressed during a lockdown, a new picture will be displayed and sound will be played. Useful to keep toddlers occupied without affecting Windows.

Individual functions can be toggled on or off via the tray icon context menu, and double clicking the icon will enable the lock. To exit the locked screen, just type the word “quit” which can be changed to something else in the Options window. An autolocking timer can be set up to activate after a certain period of inactivity.

Use macOS Recovery to reinstall the Mac operating system.

    Start up from macOS Recovery

First make sure that your Mac has a connection to the internet. Then determine whether you’re using a Mac with Apple silicon and follow the appropriate steps:

    Apple silicon

Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Click the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.

    Intel processor

Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R until you see an Apple logo or other image.

If you’re asked to select a user you know the password for, select the user, click Next, then enter their administrator password.

    Reinstall macOS

Reinstalling macOS does not remove data from your Mac. To begin installation, select Reinstall macOS from the utilities window in macOS Recovery, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

    Follow these guidelines during installation:

    • If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password you use to log in to your Mac.
    • If the installer doesn’t see your disk, or it says that it can’t install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.
    • If the installer offers you the choice between installing on Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD – Data, choose Macintosh HD.
    • Allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen might be empty for minutes at a time.

After installation is complete, your Mac might restart to a setup assistant. If you’re selling, trading in, or giving away your Mac, press Command-Q to quit the assistant without completing setup. Then click Shut Down. When the new owner starts up the Mac, they can use their own information to complete setup.

    Other macOS installation options

When you install macOS from Recovery, you get the current version of the most recently installed macOS, with some exceptions:

    • On an Intel-based Mac, you can use Shift-Option-Command-R during startup to be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. Or you can use Option-Command-R during startup to be offered either the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac, or in some cases the macOS that came with your Mac or the closest version still available.
    • If the Mac logic board was just replaced, you might be offered only the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.
    • If you just erased your entire startup disk, you might be offered only the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

You can also use these methods to install macOS, if the macOS is compatible with your Mac:

    • Use the App Store to download and install the latest macOS or an earlier macOS.
    • Use a USB flash drive or other secondary volume to create a bootable installer.

Mac OS X includes an easy-to-use firewall that can prevent potentially harmful incoming connections from other computers. To turn it on or off:

Mac OS X 10.6 and later

      • Click Enable stealth mode to have your computer ignore pings and similar software that attempts to discover your computer.
      • Use the plus and minus buttons to add and remove applications from the firewall. When added, you can either allow or block traffic to them.

Click OK to save your settings.

    Mac OS X 10.5

    1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. . When the System Preferences window appears, from the View menu, select Security .
    2. Click the Firewall tab.
    3. If the orange padlock icon in the lower left side of the window is closed, click it, and then authenticate with your Mac’s administrator username and password. This will allow you to make changes.

Disabling the hotkey functionality of the Windows key in Microsoft Windows 10 is not difficult, and there are several possible methods users can employ to change that particular key’s behavior. The two methods explained in this article offer the more straightforward of solutions, saving the more involved methods for later.

This how-to tutorial explains how to disable Windows key hotkey functionality by editing the Windows Registry file and by changing settings using the Group Policy Editor.

How to disable the Windows key on your keyboard

First, let me state for the record that the absolute best way to disable the Windows key while gaming is by purchasing and using a gaming keyboard with a built-in disable function. Gaming keyboards often have a simple toggle that will turn the Windows key off and on at will. It is by far the simplest solution.

However, if that is not possible at the moment, we will have to edit the Windows Registry file, which requires the standard disclaimer.

Disclaimer: Editing the Windows Registry file is a serious undertaking. A corrupted Windows Registry file could render your computer inoperable, requiring a reinstallation of the Windows 10 operating system and potential loss of data. Back up the Windows 10 Registry file and create a valid restore point before you proceed.

To start, type “regedit” into the desktop search box and select Registry Editor in the results. Once the Windows Registry file is open, navigate to this key:

Click on the Explorer key, as shown in Figure A.

Click OK and then close regedit. The change will become effective after you restart your PC. To turn Windows key functionality back on, change the Data Value to zero or delete the NoWinKeys entry.

How to disable the Windows key using Group Policy Editor

The methodology is similar for the Group Policy Editor if you are using Windows 10 Pro. Type “group policy editor” into the desktop search box and select the appropriate entry in the results. Navigate to this folder:

    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer

Click on the File Explorer entry, as shown in Figure D. Scroll down the list of configuration settings displayed in the right-hand window until you find the entry “Turn off Windows Key hotkeys.”

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

If you’re on the move with a laptop, you may not need to use the Internet. Perhaps you’re doing some work on a word processor, or you’re so far away from a WiFi point that you’re not able to get on the Internet at all! If you find yourself not using your WiFi connection, it’s a good idea to turn your adapter off to save battery. Luckily, Windows 10 comes with a few ways to disable the WiFi. In fact, there are even ways to have it turn back on again after a set amount of time.

    Using a Pre-Set Keyboard Command

If you’re using a laptop, there’s a good chance you can enable and disable the WiFi from the keyboard alone. Typically, this involves holding down the Function (“Fn”) key and pressing another key with a WiFi symbol on it. Sometimes there will be an independent key or button on the unit itself that toggles the WiFi. This feature will vary depending on the model of laptop you’re using. Check your manuals and documentation online to see if your laptop has this functionality.

If your laptop does have this – great! When you’re on the move, simply press this key combination and the WiFi will shut off. When you’re back home and want to access the WiFi, press it again to re-enable it.

By clicking these icons, we can disable the WiFi in different ways. We can click the WiFi button to turn it off, or we can click the “flight mode” button and disable WiFi that way instead.

Disable WiFi or Enable Flight Mode?

So if both of these features do virtually the same thing with WiFi, why are there two options? More importantly, which one should you pick?

To figure out which option is best for you, it’s important to realise that flight mode will shut off all wireless communications to the computer. This does include the WiFi; however, it also includes other wireless communication capabilities such as Bluetooth. If you’re currently using other wireless communications (such as a Bluetooth mouse), disable only the WiFi. If you want to disable all communications entirely, you can use flight mode.

    Auto-Enable

If you choose to disable WiFi instead of using flight mode, you’ll see that Windows 10 offers to automatically turn the WiFi back on after a set amount of time. If you like, set a timer for the WiFi connection so you can get back online as soon as you’re home.

How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook

MacOS includes a recovery partition that allows you to easily erase all data on your Mac and reinstall your OS without an installation disc. In this article we will show you how to reinstall Mac OS without disc.

To reinstall your Mac’s OS without an installation disc you need to firstly make sure that you keep your Mac turned on during the whole procedure, and that your Mac is connected to the internet. Also, it is advised to make a time machine back up of your computer if possible before following the procedure.

    • Turn your Mac on, while holding the CMD + R keys down
    • Select “Disk Utility” and click on Continue.
    • Select the startup disk and go to the Erase Tab.
    • Select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled), give a name to your disk and click on Erase.
    • Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
    • Re-install MacOSX: click on “Reinstall Mac OS X” > “Continue“.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Your computer should then install the latest version of OS that it can install. For some older Macs this won’t necessarily be the latest OS, such as MacOS Monterey, but instead MacOS Catalina, for example.

To prevent a user from accidentally or deliberately changing, moving, or deleting important data, you can lock cells and protect them. Locking cells takes two steps: adding the Lock formatting to the cells, and then turning on protection of the sheet.

    To lock cells

Select the cells that you want to lock.

On the Format menu, click Cells, or press How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook+ 1.

Click the Protection tab, and then make sure that the Locked check box is selected.

Note: By default, all cells have the Locked formatting unless you previously turned it off.

If any cells should be unlocked, select them. Press How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook+ 1. Then click to clear the Locked check box so that it isn’t selected.

On the Review tab, click Protect Sheet or Protect Workbook. Type a password for the sheet or workbook, and then retype the password under Verify.

Note: The password is optional. If you do not supply a password, any user can unprotect the sheet and change what was protected. If you do enter a password, make sure that you choose a password that is easy to remember, or write it down and keep it in a safe place. If you lose the password, you can’t access the protected parts on the sheet.

If you don’t want people to select locked cells, click to clear the Select locked cells check box.

If you want people to be able to select and fill out unlocked cells, click to select Select unlocked cells.

Before you click OK to finish, you might want people to do other things to the locked cells, like select them or format them. If so, under Allow users of this sheet to, choose the elements that you want people to be able to select or change.

    To unlock cells

You may need to temporarily turn off protection so that you can unlock cells. On the Review tab, click Unprotect Sheet or Unprotect Workbook. Then type the password.

Select the cells that you want to unlock.

Press How to temporarily remove a key from a macbook+ 1. Then click to clear the Locked check box so that it is not selected.

If there are other cells that still need to be locked, on the Review tab, click Protect Sheet or Protect Workbook. Then type a password for the sheet, and verify it by typing it again.
