If you're wondering how to lose breast fat specifically, it isn't possible to shrink your breasts alone. However, full-body weight loss from lifestyle changes like diet and exercise may also help you lose breast weight.
Video of the Day
Breasts contain glandular tissue — which makes up the lobes and ducts that produce milk — and fatty tissue that fills in the extra space, per the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). It's the fatty tissue that largely determines your breast size, and the amount of fat you carry in your breasts is different for everybody based on factors like your hormones, age and natural body weight fluctuations, according to the Mayo Clinic.
You can have healthy breasts at any size. But for some, larger breasts may put excess strain on your spine and back muscles, which can cause neck, back and shoulder pain, per the Mayo Clinic.
If shrinking your boobs is your goal, here's how to lose weight in your breasts.
Wondering how to lose boob fat specifically? While you can't target weight loss in your breasts alone, losing weight throughout your body may help.
And eating a balanced diet is a key part of any weight-loss endeavor, whether you're aiming to reduce boob fat or otherwise. Per the Mayo Clinic, your daily meals should include nutrients and foods such as:
On the flip side, limit foods such as:
like white bread and breakfast cereals
- Foods with added sugars like baked goods, soda and condiments
- Foods with trans or saturated fats like red meat, butter and certain cheeses
It's also important to create a daily calorie deficit to help you lose weight, according to the Mayo Clinic. Reducing your intake by 500 to 1,000 calories a day will typically help you lose weight — including breast fat — at the safe and sustainable pace of about 1 to 2 pounds per week.
Calorie intake should not fall below 1,200 per day for people assigned female at birth or 1,500 per day for people assigned male at birth, except under the supervision of a doctor, per Harvard Health Publishing. That's because eating too few calories can deprive you of essential nutrients.
It's also important to exercise regularly if you're trying to lose weight and shrink your breast size naturally. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend adults do 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (or 75 minutes of intense cardio) and at least two strength training sessions per week.
Aerobic exercise can contribute to your daily caloric deficit to help you lose weight throughout your body, including in your boobs. And that's not the only benefit of cardio — aerobics can also support heart health, brain health and better sleep for your overall wellbeing. Try cardio activities like:
And while your breasts don't contain muscle themselves, weight training can strengthen the pectoral muscle that lies behind your breasts and supports them, per the MSKCC. Dabble in different types of strength training, including:
Doing chest exercises like push-ups or presses won't make your boobs shrink, but it can contribute to full-body strength and overall weight loss, according to the American Council on Exercise.
Though it won't help you lose breast weight, binding your chest may help you visually reduce the size of your breasts if you have gender dysphoria, according to the Mayo Clinic. Per the Cleveland Clinic, you can flatten your chest with the following methods:
- Wearing several sports bras
- Layering clothing
- Using kinesiology tape
- Wearing a commercial chest binder
However, binding your breasts too tightly or with non-breathable fabric may discomfort, pain, acne or skin infection, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Bind safely with the following tips:
- Wear a binder made of breathable material
- Keep cool to avoid letting sweat collect under your binder
- Take time off from wearing your binder, like when you sleep or when you're at home
Talk to your doctor to determine the best binder for you, how often you should use it and how to avoid side effects.
4. Breast Reduction Surgery
Surgery is another way to reduce breast size if your breasts cause severe symptoms that interfere with your daily life, like pain or postural issues. If this is the case for you, talk to your doctor about a breast reduction surgery to decrease breast tissue, or other alternatives like over-the-counter pain relief or physical therapy.
A mammoplasty (the technical term for a breast reduction) removes excess fat and glandular tissue to shrink your breast size and relieve neck, shoulder or back pain, explains the American Society for Plastic Surgery.
But remember: Any surgery is invasive and carries risks, so be sure to cover any concerns in a thorough discussion with your doctor.

It is so important to note that the right underwear can give you the ability to add or reduce inches to areas of your body! Plus don’t forget that what you wear underneath your well-chosen clothes also makes a difference in how you feel!
For An Apple Shape
The Main aim for our Apple shaped ladies is to try to make the bust appear smaller but at the same time to visually add width to the hips to make your waistline more defined.
The main traits of your apple shaped body are
- Larger Bust
- Broader Shoulders
- Narrower Hips
- Less Defined Waist
The Right Type of Bra for the Apple Shape Woman
- Full cup bras or a good lifting Minimiser bra if you are especially big busted.
- Apple shapes should stay away from strapless bras, push-up bras and padded bras to avoid over-emphasising your bust and appearing too top heavy.
The Right Type of Shapewear for the Apple Shape Woman
As apple shaped ladies have narrower hips and a fuller stomach area, they are able to look great in curve friendly cuts of women's briefs, which can visually flatter the rounded tummy. French knickers with their detail and elegant design are one of the perfect choices for the apple shaped.
Today many women buy shapewear to enhance their assets and to also draw emphasis away from unwanted areas of their figures too. Wonder knickers, waist cinchers and control pants can be classed as tools of the trade when it comes to apple shaped ladies and will be ideal to create that flatter stomach.
For a Pear Shape
Underwear for pear shaped ladies should aim at visually increasing the breast size and also reducing the size of the hips and bottom.
Main Traits of a Pear Shape Figure
- Wider hips and thighs
- Narrower shoulders
- Wider bottom
- Smaller bust
The Right Type of Bra for the Pear Shape Woman
- Choose balconette bras, push-up bras and padded bras to enhance your bust.
- Creating a larger bust area with also create the look of having smaller hips, a more defined waist and balance your larger middle area. and of course draw attention upwards!
For the pear shaped women out there with larger breasts – just make sure they are lifted and supported with a correct fitting bra of a decent quality. There is nothing you can do worse for your boobs then buy an incorrect fitting, unsupportive cheap bra, especially if they are on the larger side!
Detail, pattern and design to the bra will also draw the eye and create that balanced look to your body.
The Right Type of Shapewear for the Pear Shaped Woman
Shapewear that minimizes your Hips and Bottom. Anything with side panels and extra support on your bottom and thighs.
The bikini briefs, a high cut brief or thongs will help your thighs and legs look slimmer. Women with large thighs and hips look much slimmer in a brief that is high cut on the sides and with a lower rise. They make your legs look longer and slimmer and your hips and thighs look more balanced with your shoulders.
For an Hour Glass Shape
The hourglass has the perfect body shape, embrace your curves but ensure you wear the correct sized underwear.
Main Traits of a Hourglass Shape Figure
- Bust and hips are nearly the same size
- Well defined waist
- Full Bust
- Shapely Legs
The Right Type of Bra for the Hour Glass Woman
The hourglass women may have a tendency to want to cover up their ample chest area as they feel they are too large at the top, some try to squeeze into bras with a smaller cup size as a hope to reduce the emphasis on the bust.
For ladies with a larger bust and would prefer to be minimised the ideal style of bra will be the full cup bra, half cup bra, or, if you are especially big busted the minimiser bra. The hourglass may also feel comfortable wearing the balconette bra and a plunge bra can be good only when wearing a low cut or V neck line. Never wear a plunge bra under a polo need or high neck line if you are fuller in the bust.
The hourglass may not have enough support wearing the strapless bra and triangle bras, the push-up bras and padded bras are also to be avoided as you simply do not need to emphasise your bust!
The Right Type of Shapewear for the Hour Glass Woman
Hourglass ladies have the perfect symmetry and should show off all of their assets and curves. we would simply suggest choosing a mid-thigh short that smooths out.

Sometimes bigger isn’t always better. In fact, every year, Dallas area women with naturally large breasts consult with Dr. Hopkins of J. Hopkins Plastic Surgery for a breast reduction surgery because, for them, large breasts just don’t suit their lifestyles. There are several reasons why women who are born with naturally large breasts consider having plastic surgery to reduce their size. Here are 5 of those top reasons.
1. Larger Breasts Can Give Some Dallas Women Unwanted Attention
If you’ve always been big busted, especially since puberty, then you likely know how the attention you receive because of your bustline can cause negative emotional feelings. Simply wanting people to look you straight in the eye, some people’s eyes move south, focusing on your chest size rather than making eye contact with you. This can be an embarrassing situation for some women, and make it impossible for them to wear the latest fashion styles because they are too revealing for their chest size.
2. The Larger Your Breasts, the More Likely You Are to Suffer from Back Pain
Women who naturally have large breasts are more likely to suffer from back pain due to the additional weight they carry on their chests. In fact, this is one of the leading reasons that Dallas women come to visit Dr. Hopkins for a breast reduction surgery. Desiring to be able to live pain-free, they see reducing the size of their breasts as the best option for them to alleviate the pain they live with constantly from carrying so much weight on their chests.
3. Large Breasts Can Sag and Look Unattractive in Clothing
You can’t defy gravity. And Dallas women who have large breasts know that the weight of their chest causes their breasts to sag down. Even the best-designed bra can only give you so much support. Many women with large breasts find themselves hiding in loose clothing because anything more form-fitting will reveal just how much their breasts sag.
4. Many Women With Large Breasts Suffer from Painful Bra Strap Indentations on Their Shoulders
When you have large breasts, a supportive bra is a must. But sometimes, the stress of holding up your breasts places too much pressure on your shoulders. Many women seek out Dr. Hopkins’ experience in breast reduction surgery because they have painful bra strap indentations on their shoulders, which are a result of their breasts being too heavy to be supported with even a bra designed for a larger bust.
5. Some Women with Large Breasts Experience Numbness and Tingling in Their Arms and Hands
If you experience numbness and tingling, you should always seek out the opinion of a neurologist to see if you have a neurological issue going on. But if that physician has cleared you and you still have unexplained numbness and tingling in your arms and fingers, it’s possible that your large chest size is the culprit. For some women, a breast reduction can alleviate this uncomfortable situation.

It is no wonder that women who choose breast reduction at my Idaho Falls and Jackson Hole practice are some of the most satisfied plastic surgery patients I see. The breast reduction procedure not only removes the excess weight of the breast but also performs a simultaneous breast lift. This lift moves the nipple and areola into a more youthful position as well as giving a significant improvement in the overall shape of the breast.

Breast Reduction Techniques
There are many different breast reduction techniques available to plastic surgeons and their patients today. As with any surgery, there will be scarring, but newer techniques attempt to minimize this. The standard breast reduction technique has been used for decades and results in a consistent breast shape. However, it leaves vertical and horizontal scars on the breast. Newer techniques or vertical breast reductions attempt to reduce the amount of the horizontal scar or eliminate it altogether. Other advanced procedures include laser-assisted breast reduction surgery popularized by one of my mentors, Dr. Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles.
Vectra ® 3-D
Visualize the results of your facial, body, or breast procedure before surgery. The VECTRA system combines your image with medical data to create a highly realistic 3-D simulation.
I believe it is imperative that each procedure is individually designed; integrating the patient’s wishes with the findings of their physical exam. Factors such as breast size, skin quality, elasticity, chest shape, nipple/areola diameter, and others determine which procedure is ideal for each patient. Together we will address which technique will result in the most proportional and aesthetically pleasing breasts. Many of my breast lift patients wish to combine their procedure with a breast reduction for a comprehensive breast enhancement. I thoroughly interview each patient to discover what concerns her most about her breasts during our consultation at Freeman Plastic Surgery. In this way, we can choose together which procedure will meet your expectations.
Despite the fact that many women dream of having large breasts, the owners of such a bust are often not happy with their magnificent forms. Excessively large breasts can be the cause of deterioration of posture, suffers from it and the spine, it is difficult to choose the right size underwear. This gives discomfort when walking, running or even becomes the cause of complexes in intimate relationships.
That’s why women want to throw off, in their opinion, an awfully uncomfortable dignity, and finally, to breathe a sigh of relief. And, of course, here it is not just about a large breast, but a very large breast that looks disproportionately with the size of the body. Is it possible to reduce the breasts at all and how can this be done?
Breast reduction with operation
Operation is a very serious thing and is only performed when the big breasts are a threat to health or cause serious moral suffering to a woman. Preliminary it is necessary to discuss all possible risks with a plastic surgeon and maybe he will tell you other ways of solving this problem. The plastic consists in removing excess fat and tissues from the breast, then the breast is given the right shape and the right volume. It is worth remembering that after such an operation, a rehabilitation period is required, during which the stitches will heal, and it will not be possible to exercise physical activities, lift heavy ones. The structure of the body in each woman is very different, as is the structure of the breast in all, and therefore the choice of surgery must be strictly individualized. There are several types of surgical breast reduction.
- With particularly large breast sizes, is often used to dissect the breast with nipple transfer. This is a very complex operation and it is performed quite rarely, but still it is sometimes the only solution to the problem. It consists in removing the volume of the breast, and the nipples are transferred to the new place of the formed breast. But with this type of intervention, there is a risk that the nipples will not survive in the new place, and then another operation will be required. After this operation, the sensitivity of the nipples is lost and there is no question of the possibility of breastfeeding.
- If you want to preserve the sensitivity of the chest, you can resort to the vertical incision of the chest .With this type of operation, the least risks and this is one of the most frequent types of intervention.
- The T-shaped breast incision is also used, in which larger volumes of tissue can be removed.
- If a woman wants to reduce the breast a little, she can choose such a method as liposuction .Of all the methods, this is the safest and relatively inexpensive way to operate.
- When carrying out operations with the breast, it should be noted that the intervention can not be carried out with diabetes, cancer, venereal diseases, poor blood clotting and breastfeeding.
Any operation is a great stress for the body, which is accompanied by risks. It is better to think a hundred times, weigh the pros and cons and always consult with relatives, perhaps, your problem is even decided. After such an intervention, inflammation of the mammary glands, their asymmetry, a decrease in the sensitivity of the breast or vice versa, its tenderness is possible. Remain after such an operation and scars, which are rather difficult to clean. But if you are still firmly set on such an operation, then seriously approach the choice of a surgeon, 90% of the outcome of the operation depends on his professionalism.
It should be remembered that surgery is not the only way to reduce breasts, and you can try other methods.
Breast reduction diet
When we lose weight, we are one of the first to lose weight in the chest, so try to just sit on a diet, perhaps the cause of a large breast in your overweight. But excessive fasting is also not needed, everything should happen gradually, otherwise your diet will be accompanied by sagging and flabbiness of the skin. Consult with a dietitian, or choose yourself a diet where you simply exclude all fried, flour and harmful. Any diet should be accompanied by physical exercises, massage and the use of creams for the elasticity of the skin of the body.
Compresses and contrast shower
These methods do not give any guarantee that your breasts will decrease as if by magic. But still some women claim that they were helped by these methods. Compresses are an old method for breast reduction. For him, you need 50 grams of crushed poppy heads, fill them with a liter of water and boil over medium heat for 15-20 minutes. Then strain the mixture and apply compresses on the chest, moistened with gauze or a thin rag in the broth. For a stronger result from compresses, it is best to use them every day in the morning and in the evening.
Contrast shower perfectly tightens the chest, the skin on the chest becomes more elastic, smooth and supple, increases blood circulation in the chest .And even if the breast does not diminish in size, it will externally improve exactly. With a contrasting soul, lightly rub the breast with a washcloth in a circle. By the way, many do not know that the left breast should be massaged clockwise, and the right breast against the hour.

To tighten and visually reduce the breasts can special adjusting underwear. Such a bra is able to hide up to 1-2 breast sizes. Special bras include bras with round cups, as well as underwear, closely adjacent to the chest on both sides. Corrective underwear evenly distributes the load and avoids stoop because of the large size of the breast.
Physical stress for breast reduction
This method is often very effective and in some cases produces such an effect that it is not possible to resort to other methods. Such types of exercises as aerobics, aqua aerobics, running, various push-ups and exercises with dumbbells, as well as exercises on the muscles for breasts, which are available in any fitness club, are suitable here.
It is not necessary to have an ideal breast and body to please yourself and others, it is rather a psychological problem. But if you are striving for excellence and do not want to stop at anything, then this is very commendable and you will always succeed!
More than any other type of breast enhancement, breast reduction procedures can be as much a medical necessity as an elective cosmetic surgery, because excessively large breasts can result in both physical pain and psychological scarring. Insurance companies recognize this and that’s why some will pay for a breast reduction.
Also known as reduction mammaplasty, women in the New Orleans area opt for breast reduction for a variety of important physical reasons – chronic neck and back pain, worsening posture, rash under the breasts, pain caused by bra straps, and difficulty breathing. Then, there’s the psychological impact – the inappropriate staring and insensitive comments. Individually, any one of these reasons would be worth discussing with Dr. Cooper the benefits of breast reduction. Taken together, excessively large breasts can simply be unbearable.
Vectra 3D Imaging
Dr. Michele Cooper is now offering Vectra® 3D Imaging, an innovative system that lets you visualize the actual weight of each of your breasts, to better argue the extent of your needed reduction for insurance cases. It also allows us to better assess how much tissue you may want removed, for operative planning. The Vectra can show you where your scars will be located, unfortunately, the imaging doesn’t actually reduce the size of your breasts, for visualization.
During your initial consultation in our Mandeville office, you can talk with Dr. Cooper about the changes you hope to achieve, and she will work with you to determine the approaches to best accomplish your cosmetic surgery goals. Dr. Cooper likes to schedule an entire hour to meet each new patient. This provides a friendly, unhurried atmosphere for her to provide you with all the information you will need to make educated decisions about plastic surgery, specifically breast reduction.
Hear what some of our happiest patients say about their experience.
Dr. Cooper will ask you about the precise changes you desire, discuss incision size and location, resultant scars, as well as the risks and benefits associated with breast reduction. Additionally, breastfeeding is often not possible or recommended post procedure, so if this is very important to you, this would be the one reason to wait until you are finished having children to have the procedure performed. With this information, you and Dr. Cooper will be able to determine the procedural strategies that will best meet your expectations.
Two weeks prior to your breast reduction, you will meet with Dr. Cooper’s staff, to discuss all pre- and post-operative instructions, and to confirm the procedural plans previously discussed. A mammogram is required prior to a breast reduction on all patients 35 or older and this will be ordered by Dr. Cooper and should be covered by your insurance.
Breast reduction is performed at an outpatient facility. The procedure itself could take from 1.5 to 3 hours. A family member or friend will need to drive you home and provide assistance during the first 24 to 48 hours. You and your caregiver will both be provided with Dr. Cooper’s cell phone number for any concerns or questions.
Most women go many years contemplating breast reduction only to wonder later why they waited so long. Don’t wait another day, because breast reduction isn’t just breast enhancement – it’s life enhancement.
Come see why so many women on the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans, Mandeville and Slidell trust Dr. Cooper to achieve their most beautifully enhanced selves. To request your breast reduction consultation, contact Dr. Cooper today.

Using sophisticated techniques and proven technologies, Dr. Berardi is able to produce beautiful, natural-looking results. Read through the paragraphs below to learn more about breast reduction in Phoenix / Scottsdale, Arizona.
Are You a Breast Reduction Candidate?
Women who are uncomfortable with the large size of their breasts may pursue breast reduction surgery in Phoenix / Scottsdale. While breast reduction can be performed at any age, it is important that your breasts are fully developed prior to undergoing treatment. This will ensure long-lasting, satisfactory results. It is also important that you are at a stable weight, or do not plan to lose a significant amount of weight after surgery, as this too may affect the final results of treatment. Finally, it is important that you have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the surgery. During a Scottsdale breast reduction consultation, Dr. Berardi will evaluate your candidacy for the procedure and address any questions or concerns you may have.
The Breast Reduction Procedure in Scottsdale and Phoenix
Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of excess tissue and skin from the breasts. This procedure reduces the volume of the breasts, reshapes the breast and lifts the breast. Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is typically an outpatient procedure. Dr. Berardi can perform the surgery using one of three incision types. The decision will be based on your cosmetic goals, his recommendations and the degree of reduction needed. The incision will either be made around the areola alone, around the areola and extending down to the breast folds, or as an anchor incision which encircles the areola and extends down and around the breast fold. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Berardi will remove excess tissue and skin, as well as move the nipple to a higher location on the breast. The final result is breasts that are natural-looking and in proportion with the rest of your body.
Breast reduction recovery varies from patient to patient, based on the degree of changes made to the breasts. Dr. Berardi will place you into a compressive bandage that will provide you support and ensure breast swelling is controlled. You should expect to experience soreness and swelling in the days after surgery. Dr. Berardi will prescribe antibiotics and pain medication to help ensure a safe and comfortable recovery period. Any heavy lifting or strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided until Dr. Berardi releases you to do so. You will be able to return to work typically in one week.
Once the recovery period is over, patients who undergo breast reduction surgery will find that their quality of life is greatly enhanced. In addition to feeling more comfortable on a daily basis, breast reduction patients are able to participate in a more active lifestyle, have a larger selection of clothing options, and feel more comfortable in their own skin.
Breast reductions involve far more than simply making the breast smaller. Dr. Sailon views breast reduction surgery as a way to not only make the breasts lighter, but also to recontour the breasts to make them visually pleasing. He always seeks to approach concerns regarding your breasts with sensitivity and compassion.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A BREAST REDUCTION?
Back, neck or shoulder pain
Pain or grooving in the bra strap area
Difficulty finding bras that fit well
Rashes or skin infections in the lower breast fold
Trouble with exercise or sports
Embarrassment or self-image concerns
If any of the above describe symptoms you are having from large breasts, you may be a candidate for a breast reduction.
What are the benefits of a breast reduction?
The primary goal of a breast reduction is to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. Dr. Sailon sees this as a chance to do more and approaches this surgery with your body shape in mind. The youthful perkiness can be restored by lifting the breast. The nipple position is usually brought upwards to a more aesthetically pleasing position. If desired, the size of the areola can be reduced.
All of these factors can have a profound impact on your self-esteem. Many who undergo surgery report feeling a dramatic change immediately after surgery. Posture can improve. Back, neck or shoulder pain may be relieved. Self-confidence can be boosted from better harmony between breast and body.
When should I do a breast reduction?
Determining the right time in your life for a breast reduction hinges on many considerations that Dr. Sailon will review with you carefully. Your weight should be stable to ensure that your breast shape does not change after surgery. Gaining or losing a large amount of weight can impact your results.
Child-bearing should also be considered if you are planning to breastfeed since breast reductions can impact the amount of breast milk produced.
Am I too young for a reduction mammaplasty ?
It is common for young women to seek a breast reduction. Although there is no specific age cut off, a number of factors must be considered. Prior to surgery, weight and breast size should be stable for at least one year. Growth should be completed as well. Teenagers and their parents do need to be aware of the potential effects of surgery on future lactation. There are rare exceptions to the above where there is uncontrolled growth of the breasts from an early age (known as benign virginal hypertrophy).
Will insurance cover my breast reduction?
The answer depends much on your insurance carrier. Our office will do everything possible to get your breast reduction covered by insurance if it is medically necessary. Providing documentation from other health care providers (doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors) can be beneficial. Most insurance carriers will require a minimum amount of weight be removed based on your height and weight.
Breast Reduction – Reduction Mammoplasty in Paramus at Art Plastic Surgery
The presence of excess breast tissue can cause a great deal of physical and emotional discomfort. Women with very large breasts usually suffer from chronic back pain and skin irritation below their bra straps. They often feel self-conscious, struggle to find clothing that fits properly, and may avoid certain activities. Men dealing with gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) also often feel self-conscious and may avoid certain activities, like exercise and going shirtless at the pool. Breast reduction surgery (known as reduction mammoplasty) permanently decreases the size of the breasts, creating improved mental and physical well-being for patients.

About Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed to remove skin, fat, and glandular tissue from the breasts in order to uniformly reduce their size. This operation can also improve the shape and symmetry of female breasts and make the areolas smaller, if desired. Women notice that after having a breast reduction, their breasts look rounder and perkier; premature sagging is eliminated.
Board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. John T. Cozzone, Dr. Luis A. Zapiach, and Dr. Pedro Vieira are experienced in performing several different types of reduction mammoplasty. The mammoplasty methods described below create different degrees of reduction, from a subtle decrease in breast size to a substantial modification of both breast size and shape.
Liposuction removes fat from the breasts through a thin surgical tube called a cannula. Because breasts contain fatty tissue, this minimally invasive technique can make them visibly smaller without creating noticeable scars; liposuction requires just one keyhole incision per breast. However, this technique cannot be used to remove excess skin or reposition the nipples. It’s therefore usually used to treat enlarged male breasts or to reduce female breasts by one cup size or less. To learn more about gynecomastia surgery, visit our page on male breast reduction.
The vertical technique is the most common method of breast reduction for women. During a vertical reduction, an incision is made around each areola and down the front of each breast, in a pattern resembling a lollipop. These incisions allow Dr. Cozzone, Dr. Zapiach, and Dr. Vieira to raise and reshape the areola while removing excess skin. Fatty tissue and glandular tissue are also removed during this procedure.
The inverted T breast reduction method is like the lollipop technique, with the addition of another incision within the crease under each breast. This anchor-shaped incision pattern allows our surgeons to dramatically reshape the patient’s breasts, greatly reducing their size when needed.
At Art Plastic Surgery, your comfort is our priority. Dr. Cozzone, Dr. Zapiach, and Dr. Vieira take the time to carefully review each patient’s needs during their consultation. Breast Reduction FAQ
The length of the recovery period following breast reduction surgery varies depending on the surgical method that was used. Liposuction-only breast reductions usually require about one week of rest, but you can expect to spend ten to fourteen days resting after having a vertical or anchor lift. After two weeks, you’ll be able to return to work, and symptoms of swelling and bruising will subside. However, you’ll still need to avoid vigorous exercise and heavy lifting for another two to four weeks.
Our doctors will provide you with a supportive bra designed to help you heal and stay comfortable after your operation. You’ll need to wear this bra for about one month after having breast reduction surgery. You’ll also be given prescription pain medication to help you stay completely comfortable during recovery.
The ideal breast reduction candidate is an adult who is in good health, doesn’t smoke, and is close to his or her ideal weight. Having breast reduction surgery can affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed, so you may want to wait until after you’ve had children to pursue this procedure. Alternately, you can communicate your wishes to our surgeons, and they’ll do their best to customize your procedure to preserve your ability to breastfeed.
In some cases, breast reduction surgery is covered by medical insurance. If your breasts are causing severe physical discomfort or your breast enlargement is caused by a medical condition (like macromastia), you have a greater chance of securing insurance coverage. When you visit our practice for a consultation, Dr. Cozzone, Dr. Zapiach, and Dr. Vieira will help you figure out the extent of the coverage offered by your policy. Even if your insurance doesn’t cover reduction mammoplasty, we can help you finance your procedure through a reputable third party like CareCredit. It’s our goal to make this life-changing procedure affordable to all our patients.
Breast reduction surgery usually creates one visible scar below the areola. The rest of the scar tissue produced by this procedure will either be disguised by the lighter ring of tissue that naturally surrounds the areola or hidden within the creases under each breast. If you feel your scars are too visible even a year after your procedure, you can return to Art Plastic Surgery for scar revision treatment. Dr. Cozzone, Dr. Zapiach, and Dr. Vieira use a mix of injectable compounds and laser skin resurfacing to flatten and fade raised scars.
You can sweat your way to a stronger, more proportional chest.
Definitions of masculinity and standards of what a man should look like might be more fluid concepts today than at any point in recent memory, but there are still plenty of conventions that make anyone who considers themselves to be a man squeamish if they can’t conform to the expected standard. These qualities can make some guys see themselves as a square peg attempting to fit into a round hole. Chief among these standards is that a man should look a certain way, with the ideal physique consisting of broad shoulders and a tapered torso, with plenty of muscle mass to go around. Big arms and visible abs are a must—along with a perfectly-shaped barrel chest.
But while some departures from this standard are still widely considered within the spectrum of normal masculinity—think large bellies, love handles, or the middle-ground of the “skinny fat” or “dad bod”—there’s one particular physical characteristic that causes men to feel shame. The “big chest” convention has its limits; when guys have large pecs that are bigger than the norm, they’re no longer lauded. They’re considered to have “man-boobs,” (or moobs for short), and find themselves the subject of derision from other men and sometimes women, too.
Man-boobs are stigmatized everywhere from locker rooms to dating apps, and guys worry about being perceived as too effeminate or grossly unhealthy. Fear of this stigma can push men to take sometimes drastic measures to change or mask their chests, with some refusing to remove their shirts in any public setting, slouching, or even gaining weight, while others go as far as seeking surgical procedures to change their body’s shape.
But really, the condition, known as gynemastia, is much more common than you might expect; up to 30 percent of men will be affected at some point in their lives, often during periods of life when the body undergoes hormonal changes, like puberty or between the ages of 50 to 69.
But this isn’t a one-size fits all condition. There are several factors to consider for guys with ‘man boobs’ in determining the cause of the enlargement. Some men might just carry excess fat in their breasts, so exercise can help to reduce the area down to a more proportional size. Thankfully, the fatty lumps aren’t necessarily dangerous (belly fat in the gut is what you should really worry about), but the condition could be caused by changes in hormone levels from a variety of natural or synthetic factors. Clinical gynecomastia is a hormonal imbalance or elevated levels of estrogen and lowered levels of testosterone. This could come naturally, or might be caused by medications, street drugs, or steroids.
Still, it’s usually not a serious problem and may go away on its own. However, if you think you have gynecomastia and it continues to persist or cause you discomfort, you should visit a doctor to find out if medication or surgery will help.
To get rid of their prominent breasts, men are increasingly opting for a surgical solution. Male breast reduction procedures rose by 32 percent from 2000 to 2017 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and in 2019 was the fourth most common cosmetic surgery procedure for men.
For those who are dealing with excess fat stored in the chest, picking a more targeted workout plan might help. Using a routine that works to build muscle while burning fat can be a key path to success. Picking exercises that work your whole body to kickstart your metabolism will help along with hammering the chest, so get ready to work hard and fast.
You should also make sure that all of your training focus doesn’t go into your chest. Over-emphasizing what you perceive as your problem area might only cause new ones. To help create more symmetry, think about what’s behind you. “If you want a bigger chest, do back exercises,” says Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. “Doing only pushups and bench presses will lead your chest muscle fibers to tighten, pulling your shoulders forward (especially if you have a desk job). Offset that with rows; stronger back muscles will pull your shoulders back, allowing your chest fibers to broaden out visually. “

The Man Boob Eliminator Workout
Firm up your chest and shed your man boobs with these supersets.
DO THIS: Beginning with exercise 1A, do as many reps as you can in 30 seconds. Then rest for 30 seconds.
Next, do exercise 1B, completing as many reps as you can in 30 seconds, and then rest for 30 seconds. That’s 1 round. Complete 4 rounds of superset 1, then rest 2 minutes before moving on to superset 2 for 4 rounds.
Add these supersets to your workout routine 2 or 3 times a week.
1A. Inverted Row
Set up a barbell in a squat rack or find a bar at a height where you can hold it from underneath with your body almost parallel with the ground. Make sure to squeeze your glutes and engage your core, as if you were holding a plank, so that this becomes a full-body exercise. Squeeze your shoulder blades, then pull yourself up to the bar (imagine that you are pulling the bar down to your chest to help engage your back).
This basic exercise can help to shape your chest more than you might expect—but you might be missing out on some benefits if you’re not in the proper position. Like the inverted row, you should do your best to keep your plank position strong, with engaged glutes and core. For more great chest engagement, make sure that your hands aren’t too wide apart and your elbows don’t flare when you lower to the floor. Once you can push through 15 to 20 perfect reps, begin experiment with variations and half-rep schemes.
2A. Goblet Squat
Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell at chest height. Keep your chest and core engaged to keep the weight from tipping your torso forward—squeezing the back will also help with this. Take your time to lower down, keeping your knees wide apart. Press up from the ground to raise back up top.
The key here is that this is not a squat with a front raise. Instead, focus on your hip hinge and extension. Bend your knees slightly, bring the weight back through your legs, then stand up and squeeze your glutes powerfully to drive the weight up.
Some women suffer from having developed very large breasts from an early age. Often this runs in the family but sometimes significant breast enlargement can also occur following pregnancies. Women with large breasts can suffer from a range of debilitating physical symptoms such as back pain, neck and shoulder pain, a feeling of heaviness in the breasts, indentation marks on the skin of the shoulder region where bra straps have dug in, restriction in physical exercise, infections and rashes occurring under both breasts, as well as pschycosocial symptoms arising from an unnatural disproportion between breast size and the rest of the body habitus leading to low self esteem, embarrassment in relationships, difficulty finding clothes to fit, lack of confidence to play sport.
A breast reduction is an operation performed to reduce the size of one or both breasts. It is performed under a general anaesthetic and the operation takes 3-4 hours and requires a hospital stay of 2-3 days. There are different technical ways the operation can be carried out depending on a number of individual factors, and this determines the extent and location of the resultant scars on the breast. Broadly speaking, in all breast reduction operations, cuts are made on the under surface of the breast and excess skin and breast tissue is excised together with a reduction in the diameter of the areola (the pink/brown part of the nipple complex). The nipple is moved to a higher, more youthful position and the wounds are stitched with dissolving sutures, and covered with light dressings. The resultant scars are shaped like an inverted “T” shape and include a circular scar around the new nipple/areolar complex, a vertical scar passing from the nipple to underneath the breast, which joins a long curved scar passing in the breast fold. In some individuals, it is possible to perform the surgery without the scar in the breast fold, leaving only a circular scar around the nipple and a vertical scar.
This is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures and has high patient satisfaction and low complication rate.
It may seem counterintuitive in this age of breast augmentation being the country’s most popular cosmetic surgery, but having naturally large breasts can be a burden — both physically and emotionally. They can cause back and neck problems, even nerve damage. They can affect a woman’s posture. They can keep her from participating in many sports or forms of exercise. And they attract unwanted attention in seemingly every social situation.

What Is Breast Reduction?
Women with very large pendulous breasts may experience varied medical problems including back and neck pain. Also, the weight of large breasts can cause the bra straps to dig into the shoulders leaving groove markings. Large breasts get in the way of physical activities such as running, making exercise and weight loss very difficult if not impossible. Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes fat, glandular tissue, and excessive skin, resulting in smaller, lighter and firmer breasts that are better-shaped in proportion to the rest of the body.
Before And After Breast Reduction With Dr. Rhee
Benefits Of Breast Reduction Surgery
For a woman who has been burdened her entire life with overly large breasts, reducing their size to be proportional can really be freeing. Gone is the constant back and neck pain. Gone is the feeling that it’s hard to stand up straight because of the weight pulling you forward. Suddenly it’s fun to buy clothes, rather than an exercise in searching for cover-up options. It’s great to enter a party, restaurant or bar, or even a meeting and not feel as if eyes focus on your large breasts.
After breast reduction, Dr. Rhee’s patients start taking exercise classes they’ve always avoided. Impact sports such as running or playing tennis are an option now. Patients often find themselves reengaging in social situations they’ve not even realized they were avoiding.
Plus, patients love the look of their reduced breasts. Sagging skin is removed and the breasts are lifted to a higher position on the chest. With severe sagging, nipples may even have pointed downward, but now they sit high on the chest. The reduced breasts are firm and don’t have the flattened, sagging appearance that was so depressing
After this procedure, most patients find a whole new level of self-confidence and develop an entirely new body image

How Do I Prepare For Breast Reduction Surgery?
Your physical preparations are the same as for any surgery: stop taking anti-inflammatory medications, stop taking most supplements, and stop taking any blood thinning medication. We also require that patients stop smoking at least six weeks prior to and after surgery, however, the risks of smoking are still present even if the patient quits.
Preparation really needs to position for your recovery. You’ll need to get your recovery area ready, as you’ll need to take probably at least one week off work. You won’t be able to lift much, either, so plan on someone helping you around the house for the first week. Fill your pain medication prescription beforehand and plan to need to lay low for a week or so. Have Netflix or a couple of good books ready.
Choosing Your Cup Size
This procedure is meant to make you happy with your new breasts, not be the picture Dr. Rhee has in mind. With every surgery, she treats each case as unique. The goal is to meet the goals and expectations of the patient. You will choose the size of your breasts.
Breast reduction can be difficult for patients to visualize, however. The patient has been used to such large pendulous breasts that it can be hard to settle on a new, smaller size. Dr. Rhee can help with this decision if you would like. She can help you visualize what your smaller breasts will look like with the aid of simulation software.
Breast Reduction Procedure With Dr. Rhee
There are two typical incision types. The method used by Dr. Rhee will depend on the extent of sagging skin that needs to be addressed.
Traditional incision breast reduction
In this method, Dr. Rhee creates an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, runs down to the breast crease, and follows the breast crease a few inches in each direction. This incision is normally used for women with extremely large breasts, as it allows the most tissue removal.
Vertical incision breast reduction
Also known as the Lejour or Wise method, this incision doesn’t add the two horizontal extensions along the breast crease. Instead, the incision is more like a lollipop, circling the areola and running straight down to the breast crease. This is used for women with moderately large breasts and creates a smaller scar than the traditional method. Actual tissue can be removed in a keyhole shape and then the two sides can be brought together to form the single vertical line. This is the method preferred by Dr. Rhee, if possible, due to the lesser visible scarring.
In both cases, fat, excess glandular tissue, and skin are removed. The nipples and areolae are usually relocated to a higher position, as well. The areolae will likely be made smaller.

The Anatomy of the Female Breast
A breast reduction surgery can alleviate neck pain, shoulder pain, and back pain, remove limitations on physical activity, and improve the breast aesthetic. Many candidates combine a Breast Reduction with a breast lift or breast augmentation with Implants to create the ideal breast shape, size, and volume.
What cosmetic concerns does a breast reduction procedure treat?
Who is the ideal candidate for abreast reduction procedure?

A quick search online will highlight many natural remedies that promise dramatic results. However, these methods are not proven, can be a huge waste of money, and will leave you disappointed. If you’re wondering how to reduce your cup size from a D to B (or any smaller size), breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is the most effective long-term solution.
Your guide on how to reduce cup size from D to B
It’s important to note that each surgery is unique to the individual, so it is crucial that you talk through your options and unique situation with a trusted surgeon to ensure you have realistic expectations.
When to consider a breast reduction?
There’s no denying that large breasts can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Large breasted women (and men) can struggle to find supportive bras, swimwear, and clothing that suits their busty silhouette. If this sounds like you, then a breast reduction might be the answer, and is a proven way to help alleviate chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain, as well as any chafing issues related to larger breasts.
Not only will a breast reduction help remove physical symptoms and make bra shopping a breeze, but it can also improve posture, boost your self-confidence and help you achieve a more youthful, comfortable, and proportionate silhouette.
Reduction mammoplasty can genuinely be a life-changing procedure, helping finalize your weight loss journey, reclaim your body after having children, or simply make you feel more comfortable in your skin. With smaller breasts, you can relieve physical symptoms, sleep better and go about your day-to-day work and exercise without the hassle of an excessive bust.
What is involved in breast reduction surgery?
During a breast reduction, your surgeon will carefully remove excess tissue, fat, and skin to contour the breast to your preferred size and shape.
When performed at Burbank Plastic Surgery, your initial consultations will involve the use of Vectra 3D technology to help visualize and plan the potential outcome of your reduction mammoplasty. During this consultation, your doctor will also determine which surgical technique best suits your situation.
Option 1 – Vertical or Lollipop Approach
This option is ideal for those after a more moderate reduction and involves an incision around the areola and down the breast, similar to the shape of a lollipop.
Option 2 – Inverted T or Anchor Approach
If you are seeking a more excessive reduction, your surgeon will likely use the inverted T approach as it allows for the maximum degree of tissue removal and reshaping as the incision goes around the areola, down the breast, and underneath the breast fold.
After surgery, you will generally be able to return to work after ten days and resume exercise after six weeks. Initial recovery time is around one month; however, results will continue to improve over a year.
How small can you go with a breast reduction?
As mentioned above, every surgery is unique, and the level of reduction will be impacted by several factors, including:
● Body type and shape
● Amount of volume there is to lose
● Blood supply to the nipple
The ultimate goal is to ensure your new breast size compliments the contours and proportions of your body, while also providing a suitable reduction so that you can be rid of pain and discomfort. While your surgeon cannot promise an exact cup size, it is definitely possible to go from a D to a B cup with a breast reduction.

We often hear about such procedures as breast augmentation and breast lift, but can you imagine that one of the most popular plastic surgeries among women is breast reduction – reduction mammoplasty.
Large breasts visually change body proportions and make its owner look fatter. But this is not the only problem, that girls and women with big breasts face.
In this article, we will figure out, who needs reduction mammoplasty, how the surgical intervention is going on and will see some tips from the French plastic surgeon Jean Louis Durand for those who are about to reduce their breasts.
Big breasts are big problems.
Nowadays many women are of the opinion that men like only big boobs. The owners of small breast sizes are worried about this fact very much. But can you imagine that women with big breasts are not always happy with their “treasures” as they constantly face the following problems:
- Shopping for lingerie. It is almost impossible to find bras, which would be both cute and would keep the breast supported.
- Difficulties in choosing clothes. Very often the upper and lower parts of the body have different sizes.
- Discomfort during running.
- Back constantly hurts
- Stooped posture
- Sleep problems. Those who have large breasts have already forgotten what is to sleep on the stomach.
- Early breast ptosis.
Who needs breast reduction surgery?
In fact, the surgery can be performed from the very moment the woman starts feeling uncomfortable about her breasts. And the more problems the boobs cause, the higher the need for surgical intervention is.
Before performing the surgery plastic surgeons do not take into account breast volume alone, they also consider the growth and weight of the patient. After all, plump girls’ boobs can self-reduce after losing weight. Medical indications for reduction mammoplasty is when there should be removed 300 grams or more from each breast.
It is best to resort to breast reduction at an early age, as the stitch marks will be almost invisible, and the breasts will not have time to do significant harm to the patient’s health. In France, girls undergo such surgery at the age of 16. However, many women resort to it at a later age – after breastfeeding or during menopause.
How breast reduction surgery is performed
The reduction mammoplasty is performed under general anesthesia; its duration is about an hour. A plastic surgeon removes from each breast excess fat and skin and replaces the nipple in order to make the result look as natural as possible. Accordingly, the stitch is T-shaped. Many ladies want to avoid this stitch and therefore they are looking for any “top” surgeons who use innovative, mini-invasive methods. Do not make such a mistake! The replacement of the nipple is a compulsory procedure for the ideal and long-term result. In theory, the breasts can be lifted or reduced with fewer stitches, but the result of such a surgery will be short-lived. Do not worry about stitches. After all, the proper postoperative care, giving up smoking and the professional hands of the surgeon will make the stitch marks almost invisible some time later.
Tips from the French plastic surgeon for those who are going to reduce their breasts
- Do not resort to mini-invasive surgery and beware of the innovative surgical techniques. The use of innovative techniques means that they are not accepted by the surgical community. The best surgery techniques are immediately adopted by doctors. Many patients often come to me after being operated on with such innovative methods.
- 6 months later, resort to micro-pigmentation to get rid of stitch marks.
- Give up smoking before the surgery and do not smoke until the wound is completely healed.
- Regularly use special French creams for healing, because they reduce and smooth the stitch marks.
- If possible be operated on not only by a good surgeon but also in a good clinic, since the result of surgery is affected by the professionalism of the surgeon, the professionalism of the anesthesiologist, medical equipment and the sterility of the operating room
Is the reduction mammoplasty painful?
No, reduction mammoplasty is not a deep surgical intervention, so the organs are not affected. For example, during augmentation mammoplasty, the breast implant can be inserted under the muscle, which can cause some postoperative pain. In case of reduction mammoplasty, only the skin and the part of the breasts are affected. Anyway, you will be offered a painkiller after the surgery.
How will my breasts look like after the surgery? What about stitch marks?
If the surgery is successfully performed, your breasts will be cute and even ideal. During the surgical intervention, the excess skin is removed, the breast shape is changed and the nipples are replaced. The visibility of stitch marks depends on the level of professionalism of the surgeon, but it also depends on your individual characteristics and your lifestyle. Anyway, today there are a lot of creams and techniques that get rid of scars, so you shouldn’t worry about it.
What is the price for reduction mammoplasty in France?
You may be surprised, but the price for such surgery is much cheaper than in the USA and in most European countries. However, the conditions and the level of security is high enough, due to the tightened legislation of France and the absence of corruption and negligence. On average, reduction mammoplasty in France costs 4-5 thousand euros.
Breast reduction is a good option for you if
- You are physically healthy
- You have realistic expectations
- You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large
- Your breasts limit your physical activity
- You experience back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
- You have regular indentations from bra straps that support heavy, pendulous breasts
- You have skin irritation beneath the breast crease
- Your breasts hang low and have stretched skin
- Your nipples rest below the breast crease when your breasts are unsupported
- You have enlarged areolas caused by stretched skin
We use the advanced imaging system, VECTRA 3D. Using this system, a three dimensional photograph of the patient is taken prior to surgery. Then, using VECTRA’s software simulation tools, 3D representations of the postoperative result are created. This allows the patient the opportunity to preview various surgical options, and decide on the procedure that best suits her personal goals.
The process only takes a few minutes, and you will be able to see how you will look after your Breast augmentation. During your initial consultation, you will review the results and can even request alternative simulations to be sure you are comfortable with the recommended surgical plan
Using preoperative 3D simulation, the hesitation many patients experience before deciding to undergo plastic surgery and the concern about the outcome of their procedure, can be relieved. Now, you can accurately visualize the results of your procedure before making your final decision.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery if:
- You feel your breast size is causing pain, discomfort, or interferes with your daily life in other ways.

Is Breast Reduction Covered by Insurance?
If you’re having breast reduction surgery to relieve physical problems like back or neck pain, the procedure may be considered medically necessary by your insurance provider. However, each insurance company often has different requirements to meet prior to authorizating a breast reduction.
We will contact your insurance company to determine your eligibility and request approval for insurance coverage. The process to get approval usually takes about a month.
To help make surgery affordable for you, we also offer many payment and financing options.
What You Can Expect at Your Consultation
Your appointment will last from 30 minutes to one hour. During this time, we will fully assess you and your needs and answer questions that you have.
Breast Reduction is undertaken in large breasted women for whom the weight and size of their breasts causes significant discomfort.
Common problems resulting from large breasts include painful neck, back and shoulders, indentation from bra straps, rashes and fungal infections under the breast in warm weather, along with difficulties in fitting bras and clothing, inability to exercise comfortably, and social discomfort. For these reasons women who make the decision to undergo breast reduction find that the procedure can make a huge difference to their life.
What is involved in the Surgery?
The surgery involves removing breast tissue to reduce the overall size and weight of the breast, and repositioning the nipple further up on the breast to give a more natural and youthful appearance. Whilst there are visible scars left on the breast skin, many women feel the scars settle well and are worth the benefits that the breast reduction has provided them. The scars are placed around the pigmented areola, and vertically downward from here to the fold under the breast, whilst another is placed in that fold. The long- term appearance of the scars depends very much on a woman’s individual biology but if you are considering this surgery Dr O’Mahony can show you some examples of post operative results to help you visualize the likely scars.
Breast reduction is undertaken under general anaesthetic in hospital, with one overnight stay. The recovery would usually necessitate 2-3 weeks off work.
Who is suitable for Surgery?
Large breasted women who are in good health and who suffer with problems such as those described above may be suitable candidates for surgery. Dr O’Mahony will not undertake Breast Reduction Surgery on smokers, or obese patients, as the risk of complications is too high to proceed safely. She would encourage women to be as close as possible to an optimum weight before surgery, however Dr O’Mahony does understand that large heavy breasts can severely limit the ability of ladies to exercise comfortably and effectively, which can limit their ability to lose weight.
Will my Health Fund recognise this procedure?
Breast Reduction is considered a medically necessary procedure, rather than entirely cosmetic and therefore Medicare and Health Funds will cover some of the costs of surgery, although few will rebate the entire cost of surgery. Dr O’Mahony’s office can send you a detailed quote after your consultation if you wish to consider surgery.
